IntroductionIt is undeniable that modern technology has affected our lives for better or for worse. The use of technology, from simple machines to state-of-the-art gizmos, is very crucial for us to survive our daily living. The foundation of technology began 2.5 million years ago, when pre-historic humans made use of stones as equipment for hunting and survival. However, the overwhelming evolution did not start until the commencement of 18th century, also known as Industrial Revolution. It was the time when agrarian, rural societies in Europe and America became industrial and urban. The said era also paved way to the advancement of communication led by the invention of the telegraph. The start of 21st century opened many ideas for the tremendous development of gadgets. This is the period where individual devices from the past are packaged in one gadget. It can be perceived that aside from communication, people can use contemporary devices for education, work and leisure. Cellphones and tablets these days almost have little discrepancy in their functions. As we become increasingly more reliant and absorbed in technology, it is no surprise that todays children have become avid users as well.Laptops and tablets are being developed for children as young as five. Smartphones are now in the hands of children as young as ten. Technology has opened up a world of great prospects that come with great risks. Technology plays an important role in human life but may as well cause devastation of personal communication. The ever-increasing progress in the development of technology modifies the principal need of humans. A human can live without food for a month, without water for a week, without sleep for four to five days, and without internet for a couple of hours.

Statement of the ProblemThis study sought to determine the different uses of technology among college students studying in the University of Santo Tomas (UST).

Specifically, this study sought to answer the following questions:1. What are the students major purposes for using these gadgets?2. How does this purpose helped them academically?3. Overall,is there a difference on students way of using gadgets based on their college?

Significance of the StudySpecifically, this study was very useful to the following: This research will identify how the expansion of technology influences the usage of gadgets of college students in the University of Santo Tomas. This study will also be beneficial for readers to identify the variation of usage of technology in teens, particularly to college students. This study is all about the comparison of usage of modern gadgets by college students in UST. This research will also show how modern gadgets affect the activities of the said group and its benefits and downsides Moreover, this research will provide recommendations on how to evaluate the performance of college students in accordance to their usage of the modern gadgets.HypothesesThe following are the hypotheses of the study:1. College students purpose of using gadgets is independent of their academic standing.1. College students are using gadgets for communication in relation to social and academic purposes.1. College students course is not associated with the way of using gadgets.Scope and Limitation (Inclusion/Exclusion Criteria)This research is only limited to the college students enrolled in the second semester for the school year 2014-2015 in University of Santo Tomas in Sampaloc, Manila. Forty people out of the forty thousand student population from all batches of the colleges were chosen through fish bowl method Eight males and females from the Faculty of Engineering, College of Commerce and Business Administration,College of Science,College of Tourism and Hospitality Management and AMV-College of Accountancy were given the survey. The study looked upon the aspect of the variation of usage of technology in college students as well as its influence on the said population.
