Meet the New RRPC Officers

Hi, Roadrunners! As your new vice president, I would like to thank those who voted for me. When you’re the only option, it's easy. I have been on the board for multiple years and have a good knowledge of what it takes to fulfill the job. I will work closely with Les to assist with the multitude of chores that go on behind the scene. It is impossible to know how much work is needed to keep the club on an even keel. We appreciate all the club members who step forward to assist with the long list of projects. As it's been said, no one can do it all. It requires all members getting in-volved and we appreciate all of your efforts. Enough of me. Stay safe out there & enjoy the BEST prospecting club in America. George

Vice President George Knecht Treasurer Pam Hasey

I was born in Pasadena, California on July 6th. I grew up in Temple City, attended San Gabriel High School, and married in 1975. I have 3 children and 6 grandchildren. I was divorced in 1983 and met Kevin in1992. We moved to Oregon in 1995 and got married in 1996. Kevin got tired of all the rain, so we decided to move where it never rains, and we moved to Arizona in 2017.

We belonged to a gold club in Portland where I was a board member off and on and the treasurer for 4 years until we left the state. We stayed in Mesa when we first moved here, but after a couple of months we bought our home in Surprise. We joined RRPC in June, shortly thereafter we became Cookie Monsters, and I was just elected as your treasurer! I look forward to working with the new board and officers as well as meeting more of the members of this wonderful club. See you out on the claims!

Pam

RRPC SPRING PICNIC POTLUCK FUN EVENT SATURDAY APRIL 18, 2020

Gather up the kids, pack a Spring picnic (Pot Luck) of your favorite foods (remember Wet Wipes), and head to Wolf Creek (Betty Claims, Map 6). PS: A little pre-planning will help your picnic adventure turn out AWESOME.

When was the last time you practiced up on your BB panning skills? How about pan tossing? Are

you RUSTY? Well, those are just a few of the events that will happen. More events to be announced at the picnic.

Remember: You bring your own weather to the picnic and we will provide the fun and entertainment

to make it a GREAT EVENT. You also have a STRONG chance of taking home GOLD, but don’t tell every-one, lol. There is no reason to leave with an empty stomach or leaving without making a new FRIEND. By the way, there are 3 types of FRIENDS in Life: Friends for a reason, Friends for a season, and Friends for a LIFETIME. So, come on out and find that special Lifetime Friend.

I must remind everyone that ID Badges are a must and please sign in upon arrival. At that time you

will be given a ticket for a chance to win a nugget at the end of the event. Also, just like the last several years, there will be directional signs to help you on your way! Please refer to Map 6 to help you get started. It would be great if you plan on staying the night, as many others plan on staying…. and if it’s not restricted, you will see a camp fire at night! We’ll see you there!

Come sit on a blanket, by the clear stream, Feel the warm country breeze, just like a dream, Watch the pines as they bow oh so near. Take a walk along a dirt road and feel the warmth of the Sun, Watch the children as they play and run. Come have a spring picnic, with those who are there, See how happy they are when you show up there! See you in April!! The Fire of 1900 A disastrous fire on the night of July 14, 1900 changed the face of downtown Prescott. Starting in a room in the Scopel Hotel on the southwest corner of Goodwin and Montezuma Streets, the fire quickly hopped across Goodwin Street and proceeded to consume all of the buildings on "Whiskey Row" leveling the entire block. Though some of the Plaza buildings were built of brick, many were wood, and the destruction was nearly complete. The fire burned almost everything in its path to Granite Creek and Willis Street, a total of over 80 businesses. Prescott had suffered fires before, but this was by far the worst. The pluck and courage of its merchants and residents was evident, however, as they pitched in to rebuild, this time of more substantial means: brick, concrete, and stone. Within three days construction was underway. Undaunted merchants were open and do-ing a brisk business in tents, corrugated metal buildings, and hastily constructed sheds on the courthouse lawn. Of the buildings standing at the time of the fire, only a few remain: The Prescott National Bank and the Bank of Prescott (both under construction in 1900), the Knights of Pythias Building on South Cortez Street, and the City Jail and Fire Station on West Goodwin Street.

Granite Creek American History in Arizona is quite recent, although the history of the Native American, Spanish, and Mexican occupation periods are much older. Encampments of Native Americans were drawn to the creeks, which offered a fairly reliable source of fresh water, and the Anglo settlers followed suit. The first known Anglo-Americans to camp in the vicinity of Prescott were the Walker and Weaver parties in 1863. The Walker Party camped on the banks of Granite Creek in what is now downtown Prescott. Granite Creek quickly became a magnet for explorers, miners and settlers, and later, farmers. Activities and develop-ment along Granite Creek included panning for minerals, particularly gold; picnicking; the location of the first store and school in Prescott and a conglomeration of shanties and lean-tos; saloons; and Chinese and Mexican settlements. Later, substantial residences along with warehouses, a gas plant, bottling works, and farms were developed. Among the drinking establishments was the Quartz Rock Saloon, owned by a nose-less military deserter. It sported a plank bar with two bottles of whiskey and one cup. The sight of water purportedly make the patrons sick, so the business was moved to South Montezuma Street. Local legend is that saloon patrons kept falling into Granite Creek, thus diminishing a booming business. As a result, many of the saloons moved to "Whiskey Row”, which was safer because of its further distance from the creek. In addition to supporting human uses, Granite Creek gives life to many species of trees, shrubs, and grass-es. Approximately 75 percent of our local wildlife are dependent upon Granite Creek and its tributaries. Over the last 150 years, Granite Creek has seen many changes. The broad "gallery" of cottonwood and willow trees seen here was once up to a 1/4 mile in width, and it stretched from what is now downtown Prescott all the way to the Granite Dells, 5 miles to the northeast. The Granite Creek channel has been straightened, mined, filled, and built upon over time, resulting in a substantial loss of riparian habitat. In the 1990s, local organizations were formed to preserve and restore what riparian (streamside) habitat was left. Since then, riparian habitat has been protected at West Granite Creek Park, Watson Woods Riparian Preserve, Watson & Willow Lakes, and the Yavapai-Prescott Tribal Lands.

How to Become a Steward of the Land This is one of the easiest ways to win a gold nugget at the monthly meetings!

Our January Steward of the Land nugget winner was Terry Wilson. Let’s start with the basic rules.

1. Be sure to notify the office at [email protected] when you are collect trash, destroy fire rings, or fill in holes.

2. Let’s start with trash collection: -Fill up a yard bag or the equivalent with trash which can mean anything from cans and bottles to

large pieces of metal or furniture. -Take a picture of your trash, with you or another family member in it, and send it to the office

with your name, member number, and the claim on which you found it. This will put you in the drawing.

3. Next let’s look at the endless holes that are on most claims. -Take a picture of the hole before you do anything to reclaim it. -Fill in the hole(s) and take another picture, preferably with you in the picture. -Send it to the office at the above email with your name, member number, and claim.

4. Finally, there are the fire rings. -Take a picture of the fire ring before you do anything to reclaim the area. -Then throw the fire ring rocks at least three feet away so it will not look like there has ever been

a fire ring in that location before. -Take an after picture, with you in it, include your name, the name of the claim, and your mem-

ber number and send that to the office at the above email. This is all it takes to get in the monthly drawings! Terry Wilson

What’s Wrong with this Picture???

This picture was taken by the editor on one of our claims. There are two major errors that were made by prospec-tors. Can you see and name them? Look elsewhere in the newsletter for the an-swers.

Enclosed with this newsletter is the an-nual Dredge Survey. The information pro-vided will be used to complete the yearly claims report required by the Army Corps of Engineers by the end of March. And, the club will use the information to make in-formed decisions concerning our claims. Please take the time to complete the sur-vey. It will greatly help the club. Just re-view the detailed instructions at the top of the survey form. Please indicate your best estimate of hours worked and cubic yards dredged. In estimating the amount of mate-rial moved, please refer to the photo below as to what one cubic yard looks like:

The survey will be in the February and March newsletters, and can be filled out and returned electronically, printed out and mailed to the office, or brought to the Feb-ruary or March meetings. Blank survey forms will be available at the meetings. Our deadline in receiving the information on the surveys is the March 19th general meeting. Mailed-in forms must be received at the club office by March 18th.
