Q: Is it true that this year’s Biometric screening for spouses and employees will include a nicotine urine screen? Will this year’s insurance premiums be based on BMI?
A: Two tests plus participation in a Health Risk Assessment (HRA) will determine 2015 health insurance premium discount eligibility for all associates and spouses. We will screen for nicotine by blood draw in the Allen Hospital Lab, and we will measure Body Mass Index (BMI) by checking height and weight during biometric testing. If your BMI is more than 35, the discount won’t apply. However, if you lose 5 percent of your body weight during 2015, starting with your enroll-ment weight, you will receive the dis-count and be refunded the discount for prior months. Also, if you quit using tobacco, the same applies. Twelve registered nurses from Allen Hospital and Allen College provided first aid for participants at the Thunder in the Valley II airshow held August 23-24 at the Waterloo Airport. Des Moines University loaned its well-equipped, air-conditioned mobile medical van to Allen College for the event. According to Allen College chancellor Dr. Jerry Durham, the Allen nurses treated about 35 air show participants for sprains, minor abrasions, and heat related illness. Only one person required transport to the hospital for further treatment. Pictured above are Allen nurses Phyllis Ste�en, Ryan Parsons, and Mary Bierman. Other Allen nurse volunteers included Dr. Ruselle DeBonis, Denise Lundberg, Angela Vincent, Leslie Michael, Kimberly Porterfield, Becky Dumler, Kristine Rottink, and Amy Gehrke.
Allen Nurses Brave the Heat
Q: A recent booklet sent out by Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield had an article showing how many health care millions are spent due to obesity, smoking, and alcohol abuse. By far, more money is spent on alcohol abuse. Allen is now screening employ-ees for obesity and smoking status for our insurance. What is being done to screen employees for alcohol abuse?
A: Several things. Alcohol screen-ing is more complex than measuring nicotine use or BMI. Urine tests for alcohol must be performed promptly, and blood studies are often negative within just a few hours of intake. Also, the law requires UnityPoint Health to treat alcohol di�erently than drugs. However, Allen has a policy and program in place to help maintain a drug-and-alcohol-free workplace. It includes pre-employment testing,immediate testing for reasonable suspicion of use on the job, Health Risk Assessment screening and EAP support. A: Steve Cusher is the Safety and Security Manager for UnityPoint –Allen Hospital. He has worked at Allen for 10 years. Steve manages the environmental safety program, emer-gency preparedness, and the Security Department. He grew up in Waterloo and lives in Independence with his wife and three children. Community Outreach ActivitiesAllen is a non-profit organization, and we strive to not only improve the health of the people and com-munities we serve, but to make it a better place to live. Volunteering is a fun way to give back to the commu-nity where we live and work. We’ll be organizing group volunteer activities, helping with the American Heart Association events and developing fun activities for the Cedar Valley United Way Campaign.
