Editor’s Note:Hey guys! We’re up with a new issue with a new style for BISSKIT this month. Hope you like it and enjoy this issue. Please contact the editors or the teachers Ms.Laing & Ms.Mercer for any queries.

Cheers :)

The important thing in science is not

so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways

of thinking about them.

Science is the great antidote

to the poison of enthusiasm and superstition.

Equipped with his

five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure Science.

Science is built up of facts, as a

house is built of stones; but an accumulation of facts is no more a science

than a heap of stones is a house.

Science

does not know its debt to imagination.

Research is what I'm doing

when I don't know what I'm doing.

Science is simply common sense at its best.

Heyyy guyss! As BISSKIT’s March issue is all about science, the teacher interview

was held with the one and only

! CovingtonHere are the scientific answers what you always wondered about!

1)Wisdom teeth - what are they and why do some people never get them?

Ans. It’s called a wisdom tooth as most people get them as teenagers, when you start to mature. You learn from the pain. The reason why we are not all getting them is because of EVOLUTION. In ancient times, people used to have more teeth than what we do now. As time passed, some of those teeth became useless. While the teeth retrogressed the size of chin bone reduced as well. BUT! This process is still going on. As the speed of retrogression of teeth and chin size are not matching, some people get the tooth and some don’t. The person who has enough space for another tooth gets it, but it all depends on genetic things.

2)Why do some people (Indians and Arabic people) have longer eyelashes?

Ans. It’s all because of evolution. As the people who are living in the area where they always exposed to sand, dust and wind, naturally their eyelashes grow longer to protect their eyes.

3)Is it true that vegetarians have broader teeth and non-vegetarians have sharper teeth?

Ans. It mostly can be found in animals, not often in humans. It’s because as herbivores or vegetar ians chew vegetable more than carnivorous, they tend to have sharper teeth to

easily break down the wall of cellulose. People do not have that much ability to digest the cellulose in our stomach, so teeth should firstly break them down. Carnivorous animals and human meat eaters tend to have blunter teeth as meat can be easily digested in their stomach.

4)How can we let our hair grow faster?

Ans. Hair tends to grow faster when it is exposed to moisture. That’s why boys’ hair grows faster than girls’, because they run around more than girls. So, wash your hair more often to make it grow faster!

5)What is attraction?

Ans. Falling in love is part of brain releases chemicals called endorphins. The feeling is similar to found in drugs such as heroin. It’s a similar reason why people are so addicted to drugs and keep falling in love. When a person falls in love, the brain shuts down the front part of brain, which controls our ‘thinking’ part, so the person does not listen to other people’s advice but only concentrates on his or her emotion. However, if the certain time passes, the brain functions back to normal, then most couples break up. Some don’t. That’s what it called ‘long term love’, because the brain and the people continue with similar but not intense feeling.

Fitness Myths

BUSTED! Fitness Myth 1: Exercise Can Fix All Your Health Problems Truth: Exercising can not ENTIRELY fix all health problems, but regular physical activities is a good way to help prevent heart diseases, asthma and diabetes, keeping in mind to visit your doctor when needed. Consistent exercise has a positive impact on people's health.

Fitness Myth 2: If You Stop Exercising, Your Muscles Will Turn to FatTruth: If all you do is eat, eat, eat and eat with no exercise, the muscles will waste away as they are not in use. BUT it can NOT turn into fat; because fats and muscles are really two different types of tissues. So, not exercising will lead to more fat and less muscle.

Fitness Myth 3: If You Exercise, You Can Eat AnythingTruth: ONLY if you have rich nutritious diet then you can afford to exercise less and still get away with it (preferable you exercise a fair amount). Yet on the other hand, if you have poor nutrition and no exercise, you will soon have to start working out if you don’t want to be chubby.

Fitness Myth 4: If You Don't Work Out Hard and Often, Exercise Is A Waste Of TimeTruth: Every little thing counts and does not go to waste. Research has shown that even moderate exercise, such as walking and gardening a few times a week, can have tremendous benefits. So sit back and relax, I mean don’t worry – your hard work isn’t going to go to waste.

Fitness Myth 5: The More Exercise The BetterTruth: You don’t want to train like a machine all the time, do you now? For a healthy life there should be a balance between work – this case exercise, rest and a good diet. Many people give in to this myth, but really, if you don’t have a balance it can have consequences such as illnesses or weakness.

Teen Ache: T’s Advice ColumnFor your daily troubles in and out of school

If you have any questions you would like aswered, submit them to BISSKIT editors Zainab Samad and Vasudha Mukherjee or to the

teachers, Ms.Mercer and Ms.Laing. They will be handled by trained professionals with great care. your queries will be in good hands.

The first and most obvious step to being in the most unhealthy state that you can be in is to never exercise. Working out, especially forms of exercise that gets your heart going, will only burn fat and calories. This will not only give you a trimmer silhouette, but will also de-congest your blood vessels by getting rid of all that delicious fat that you’ve collected in your blood stream through the years. Avoid it at all costs.

Which brings us to rule number two: eating right. If you want to be unhealthy, you need a balanced diet of foods high in fat and foods high in sugar. Substitute vegetables in your meal with things like chips and salad croutons. Drink a lot of processed fruit juice instead of pop; recent studies have shown that soda most likely does not deplete the bones of calcium if consumed in moderation, and in fact usually has lower sugar content than your average bottle of coke. So just pig out! Or, conversely, don’t eat at all. It’ll make you look skinny, but it will also deplete your body of vital nutrients and things it needs to function. Whichever way is easier for you.

Don’t sleep. If you do, your body will be able to perform necessary functions like replenishing and restoring the function of organs, etc. Also, sleep will help rest you mentally, and no one who’s pursuing an unhealthy lifestyle wants to be mentally stable and alert. So party (or work, whatever) all night! And all day! And during that time in between! If you feel drowsy just down a few coffees or Red Bulls. Sleep is only for health junkies.

Follow a high-risk lifestyle. You know, do all those things that adults and the rules tell you not to. Who cares if its against the law? TV and movies make them look so fun and cool because they are! Sure you might end up with some addictions, some diseases, decreased organ function, internal bleeding, maybe a tumor here or there, or a shiny new metal lung… But that’s what we’re aiming for here, right?

BISS Fashion Policetakes on the science teachers

=P

What's the theme for this month's issue? You've probably guessed it-SCIENCE! So, this time we'll talk about science fashion. The first thought that comes to mind when thinking about science and fashion, are those ever so stylish lab coats. We all have probably worn one this year, either in for conducting scientific experiments, or if we've accidentally violated that ever so annoying dress code.

The thing is, lab coats aren't so bad. They protect our clothes from substances so they stay clean. Because of lab coats, we don't have to wear our ratty old sweatshirts on days we have science classes. Lab coats let us be stylish, despite the risk of soiling our nice clothing. So, next time you're hating the fact that you're wearing a lab coat, remember-they aren't so bad really. Don't be embarrassed if you're forced to wear one, if you wear it with a smile-you can pull any outfit off. Here are some of our teachers modeling the coats out for us. They don't look that bad, do they?
