“This day shall be to you one of remembrance: you shall celebrate it

as a festival to the Eternal throughout the ages; you shall celebrate

it is an institution for all time.”

Preparing our hearts and ridding ourselves of chametz

ץ מ דיקת ח ב

In preparation for this seder, the Torah commands us to remove chametz, leavened breads,

from our houses. Our rabbis remind us that matzah is made of the same grain as chametz.

What is it that makes the same thing either holy or profane? It is what we do with it, how

we treat it, how we perceive it.

As we have searched and cleaned out our homes, we also now search our hearts.

What emotional chametz has accumulated over the past year?

What has made us ignore our good inclinations?

What has turned us from the paths our hearts want to follow?

Lighting the Festival Candles

Page 3: BJBE Congregational Seder 2019 Congregatio… · Chazeret-another sign of spring, the term relates to the Hebrew word “to return.” On Passover, we become conscious of our opportunity

2

As we light the candles and welcome the glow of Passover into our homes, we pray that all those suffering around the world find light in the darkness.

We pray that our experience tonight helps us to ignite the spark of justice within each of us.

We pray that we have the strength to carry forth this light into the world, creating a beautiful and bold flame that inspires others to work by our sides to pursue freedom and justice for all people.

your mitzvot and commands us to kindle the lights of this festival day.

Blessing Each Other

In ancient times, one of the priest’s primary duties was to bless the people with this three-

fold “Priestly Benediction.” Today, this blessing is used by all: Parents bless children,

friends and partners bless one another, leader and teachers bless communities.

Symbols in the Seder

The Haggadah is full of symbolic imagery that connects us to the Passover story.

1. Z’roa- a roasted shank bone which is the symbol of the Pesach offering hearkening back

to the time of the Temple, where sacrifices played a central role in Jewish ritual.

2. Karpas- a vegetable, usually parsley, which represents spring or the seasonal rebirth of

the earth. Just as the earth begins anew, karpas, reminds us that we too can begin anew.

3. Charoset- a mixture of chopped apples, nuts, and wine, which symbolizes the bricks and

mortar of slavery.

4. Beitzah- the egg, which is a symbol of birth and renewal.

5. Maror- bitter herbs, usually horseradish, symbolizing the bitterness of slavery.

6. Chazeret- another sign of spring, the term relates to the Hebrew word “to return.” On

Passover, we become conscious of our opportunity to return to our full potential.

The Orange

Since the 1980s, people have chosen to include on their seder plate, an orange, as a symbol

of inclusion of the LGBTQ community and others who are marginalized within the Jewish

community. Each orange segment has a few seeds that have to be spit out—a gesture

repudiating the homophobia still found in the world today. [The Ma’yan Passover Haggadah]

Elijah’s Cup

Page 5: BJBE Congregational Seder 2019 Congregatio… · Chazeret-another sign of spring, the term relates to the Hebrew word “to return.” On Passover, we become conscious of our opportunity

4

We place a cup on the table for the prophet Elijah. Jewish tradition teaches that Elijah will

herald a time of hope and peace. We invite him to our seder in hopes that we might merit

that world.

Miriam’s Cup

According to Rabbinic tradition, Miriam had a special skill for locating fresh water, which

preserved spirits and lives. “Miriam’s Well” accompanied our people on our forty-year

journey through the wilderness. We place a cup for Miriam, which we will fill with water to

symbolize Miriam’s miraculous well. [adapted from The Open Door: A Passover Haggadah, 2002]

Urchatz / Handwashing חץ ור

The Exodus begins in water. Moses is delivered from the birth waters of his mother’s womb

to the waters of the Nile. Those waters carry him to safety. The Israelites’ tears flow into

the Sea of Reeds. The sea parts and they cross to safety.

As a desert people, our ancestors never took water for granted. Sarah greeted strangers at

her tent with water. Rebecca offered water to travelers and their animals. On our journey

through the desert, we were sustained with water from Miriam’s miraculous well.

Water is birth and life and sustenance. Water is deliverance. Water is a metaphor for Torah;

it quenches our spiritual thirst.

Our hands can be vehicles for creation or destruction. We cleanse our hands and dedicate them to working for good in the world.

(Wash hands with no blessing)

My strength with the song of God will be my salvation.

Karpas / Greens פס כר

What do the karpas greens represent?

We dip these greens in the salt water which parted when our ancestors fled to freedom. We

dip these greens in the salt water of tears which flow from all narrow places of oppression.

If we dwell on only our past and pain, we will wither and die. Instead we touch the water

with greens of spring so that we free ourselves from the bitterness of the past and have the

chance to begin anew and celebrate a future brimming with hope.

We dip these greens into salt water to remind us that the tears stop.

Even after pain, spring comes.

Yachatz / Breaking the Middle Matzah יחץ

Page 9: BJBE Congregational Seder 2019 Congregatio… · Chazeret-another sign of spring, the term relates to the Hebrew word “to return.” On Passover, we become conscious of our opportunity

8

Tonight we remind ourselves that it is our sacred task to make whole that which is broken,

to unite pieces that have been separated. While we celebrate our individuality, we must go

beyond our personal boundaries. It is our responsibility as individuals to help unite the

pieces of our community. Only when we break the silence and join together in a strong

voice, can our community be whole, and can we realize our greatest potential as a people.

Of the three matzot, two remain whole to symbolize the abundance of freedom. One must

be broken to recall the deprivation of slavery. It is meant to shake us from our sense of

complacency. Matzah is the bread of poverty and persecution.

Maggid / The Telling of the Story מגיד

The maggid is the heart of the Haggadah. The word maggid comes from the same Hebrew

root as the word Haggadah. The root means to tell. This section of the Haggadah contains

the story of the Exodus. The story is not a neat narrative with a beginning, middle, and end.

Rather, a compilation of questions, rituals, biblical passages, and tales from different

moments in Jewish history, the maggid’s structure invites us to use our own creativity in

retelling and re-experiencing the Exodus.

The Four Children

At Passover each year, we read the story of our ancestors’ pursuit of liberation from oppression. When confronting this history, how do we answer our children when they ask us how to pursue justice in our time?

What does the activist child ask? “The Torah tells me, ‘Justice, justice you shall pursue,’ but how can I pursue justice?” Empower her always to seek pathways to advocate for the vulnerable. As Proverbs teaches, “Speak up for the mute, for the rights of the unfortunate. Speak up, judge righteously, champion the poor and the needy.”

What does the skeptical child ask? “How can I solve problems of such enormity?” Encourage him by explaining that he need not solve the problems, he must only do what he is capable of doing. As we read in Pirkei Avot—The Ethics of Our Ancestors, “It is not your responsibility to complete the work, but neither are you free to desist from it.”

What does the indifferent child say? “It’s not my responsibility.” Persuade her that responsibility cannot be shirked. As Rabbi Abraham Joshua Heschel writes, “The opposite of good is not evil; the opposite of good is indifference. In a free society where terrible wrongs exist, some are guilty, but all are responsible.” And the uninformed child who does not know how to ask … Prompt him to see himself as an inheritor of our people’s legacy. As it says in Deuteronomy, “You must befriend the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt.” At this season of liberation, let us work toward the liberation of all people. Let us respond to our children’s questions with action and justice.

11

He went down to Egypt with meager numbers and sojourned there, but there he became a

great and very populous nation.

~Deuteronomy 26:5

The phrase “My father was a wandering Aramean” teaches us the essence of the Jewish

experience: a rootless people who have fled persecution time and time again.

As we recite these words, we acknowledge that we have stood in the shoes of the refugee.

Today, as we celebrate our freedom, we commit ourselves to continuing to stand with

contemporary refugees…

Chorus

When Miriam stood upon the shores and gazed across the sea

The wonder of this miracle she soon came to believe.

And we would pass to freedom and march to the promised land!

Rabban Gamliel used to say:

“Whoever does not consider well the meaning of these three things on Passover has not

fulfilled the obligation (of observing the Seder):

pesach, matzah, and maror.”

(Mishnah, Pesahim 10:5)

Pesach (point to the shankbone)

The shankbone reminds us not only of the sacrifice in ancient times, but also that freedom

often requires personal sacrifice.

Matzah (point to the matzah)

15

Why do we eat matzah tonight? Our Torah teaches, “And they baked unleavened cakes of

dough that they had taken out of Egypt, since they had been driven out of Egypt and could

not delay” ~ Exodus 12:39. Matzah is the bread of wandering, the bridge between our

sojourn in the land of enslavement and the land of freedom.

Maror (point to the maror)

Maror is eaten, they said, because the Egyptians embittered the lives of our people, as it is

written:

“With hard labor at mortar and brick and in all sorts of work in the field, with all the tasks

ruthlessly imposed upon them.” ~Exodus 1:14

Hillel Sandwich

The original korech or “Hillel Sandwich” combined the three basic symbols of Pesach into

one sandwich: pesach, maror, matzah. After the Temple was destroyed and the Pascal lamb

was no longer used, another piece of matzah was substituted. When we recognize that the

Pascal lamb and the matzah are both symbols of redemption, it is easy to understand the

substitution. ~ David Teutsch, “A Night of Questions”

Charoset is symbolic of mortar, and reminds us of our ancestors’ backbreaking labor, yet its

sweetness reminds us of the sweet miracle of our deliverance from bondage. Life is a

mixture of the bitter and the sweet. When we take some of the bitter herbs of slavery and

mix them with the sweet charoset of deliverance, we taste life!

Let Us Say Grace

Friends,

Let us say grace.

Or shall we ask for grace?

God,

Help us to be comforted by the faith that we are not alone,

And the understanding that there is meaning and purpose to our lives.

Help us to understand the desert journey.

Though we wander in an apparent wilderness,

The silence resounds with messages of comfort.

Guide us, O God of Miriam, show us the way.

So much of life is the steep climb up a mountain

That rumbles and shakes with Your presence, O God.

Teach us not to be afraid to climb enormous heights,

Though it takes our breath away

Because it leads to truth and helps us befriend life’s mysteries.

Friends,

Shall we say grace?

Or shall we acknowledge that we live in grace

When we know that we are loved and chosen

For unique and wondrous things,

That we are called to greatness by our passion.

God, help me find my passion,

My mission.

Help me hear the melody of the silence.

And see the possibility in the vastness.

I know that the ground beneath my feet is holy

I know that it is,

Friends let us say grace.

Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with joyful song. Then they said among the nations: "God has done great things for them." Yes, God is doing great things for us, and we are joyful. Restore our fortunes, O God, as streams revive the desert. Then those who have sown in tears shall reap in joy. Those who go forth weeping, carrying bags of seeds, shall come home with shouts of joy, bearing their sheaves. (Leader)

“We still have a long, long way to go before

we reach the promised land of freedom.

Yes, we have left the dusty soils of Egypt,

and we have crossed a Red Sea that had for

years been hardened by long and piercing

winter of massive resistance, but before we

reach the majestic shores of the promised

land, there will still be gigantic mountains

of opposition ahead and prodigious hilltops

of injustice.

Let us be dissatisfied until the tragic walls that separate the outer city of wealth and the

comfort from the inner city of poverty and despair shall be crushed by the battering rams

of the forces of justice.

Let us be dissatisfied until those who live on the outskirts of hope are brought into the

metropolis of daily security.

25

Let us be dissatisfied until slums are cast into the junk heaps of history, and every family

will live in a decent sanitary home.

Let us be dissatisfied until the dark yesterdays of segregated schools will be transformed

into bright tomorrows of quality integrated education.

Let us be dissatisfied until integration is not seen as a problem but as an opportunity to

participate in the beauty of diversity.

Let us be dissatisfied until men and women...will be judged on the basis of the content of

their character, not on the basis of the color of their skin.

Let us be dissatisfied until from every city hall, justice will roll down like waters, and

righteousness like a mighty stream.

Let us be dissatisfied until the day when nobody will shout, "White Power!" when nobody

will shout, "Black Power!" but everybody will talk about God's power and human power.”

Well me and and my people goin' to the Red Sea,

With Pharaoh's best army comin' after me.

I took my staff, stuck it in the stand,

And all of God's people walked on dry land.

CHORUS

Now Pharaoh's army was a-comin' too,

So whattaya think that God did do?

Had me take my staff and clear my throat,

And all of Pharaoh's army did the dead man's float.

CHORUS

Well that's the story of the stubborn goat.

Pharaoh should've know that chariots don't float.

The lesson is simple, it's easy to find,

When God says, "GO!" you had better mind!

♬ The Ballad of the Four Sons to the tune of Clementine

presented by Hanah Bluver

Ben Aronin, first published in his community haggadah, 1954

Adapted by Rabbi Jason Fenster

Said the father to the children, "At the Seder you will dine,

You will eat your fill of matzah, you will drink four cups of wine."

Now this father had two daughters, plus two sons that equals four,

One was wise, and one was wicked, one was simple and a bore.

And the fourth was sweet and winsome, she was young and she was small,

Page 32: BJBE Congregational Seder 2019 Congregatio… · Chazeret-another sign of spring, the term relates to the Hebrew word “to return.” On Passover, we become conscious of our opportunity

31

While her siblings asked the questions, she could scarcely speak at all.

Said the wise one to her father, "Would you please explain the laws?

Of the customs of the Seder, will you please explain the cause?"

And the father proudly answered, "As our fathers ate in speed,

Ate the Pascal lamb 'ere midnight, and from slavery were freed"

”So we follow their example, and 'ere midnight must complete,

All the Seder, and we should not, after twelve remain to eat."

Then did sneer the son so wicked, "What does all this mean to you?"

And the father's voice was bitter, as his grief and anger grew.

”If yourself you don't consider, as a son of Israel

Then for you this has no meaning, you could be a slave as well!"

“Then the simple son said softly, "What is this?" and quietly

The good father told his offspring, "We were freed from slavery."

But the youngest one was silent, for she could not speak at all,

Her bright eyes were bright with wonder, as her father told her all.

Now, dear people, heed the lesson, and remember evermore,

What the father told his children, told his kids who numbered four!
