Dear Brothers and Sisters of Our Lady of Mount Carmel,  Happy Holy Week! It begins today! Thanks for being with us to recall the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Our Church has been remembering that event for 2,000 years. Your presence today helps us sustain these major moments of our faith for another year. Please know you are welcome at every Holy Week celebration. The details are in the panel next to this letter.

In addition to everything we do in Church, the Christian community of Tenafly also comes together on Good Friday to re-enact the journey of Jesus to Calvary. Five Christian churches pray together and then walk together from church to church carrying a cross. Last year on Good Friday, my first among you, I did not know what to make of this ritual. Now I know and now I walk even more enthusiastically.

We live in a country and in a community where we are allowed to do these things in public. Please join in this prayerful event as well. Or at the very least, if you are driving by on the afternoon of Good Friday, know that we are blessed to walk the way of Calvary and that we do so humbly and gratefully.

We carry on! We carry on! A few have asked, “What do I mean by that?” This: We keep our faith alive each time we come together, each time we pray together, and each time we walk together.

Happy Holy Week!

Sincerely yours in Christ and Our Lady of Mount Carmel,

fr. Dan [email protected]

The Parish Staff of Our Lady of Mount Carmel welcomes you as we worship together

this Palm Sunday and wishes each of you a blessed Holy Week.

Matthew 21:1-11 When Jesus and the disciples drew near Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them, “Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find an ass tethered, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them here to me. And if anyone should say anything to you, reply, ‘The master has need of them.’ Then he will send them at once.” This happened so that what had been spoken through the prophet might be fulfilled: Say to daughter Zion, “Behold, your king comes to you, meek and riding on an ass, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.” The disciples went and did as Jesus had ordered them. They brought the ass and the colt and laid their cloaks over them, and he sat upon them. The very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and strewed them on the road. The crowds preceding him and those following kept crying out and saying: “Hosanna to the Son of David; blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord; hosanna in the highest.” And when he entered Jerusalem the whole city was shaken and asked, “Who is this?” And the crowds replied, “This is Jesus the prophet, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

“He Gave Himself Up ‘for Me’

Jesus gave himself up to death voluntarily in order to reciprocate the love of God the Father, in perfect union with his will, to demonstrate his love for us. On the cross Jesus ‘loved me and gave himself for me’ (Galatians 2:20). Each one of us can say: ‘He loved me and gave himself for me.’ Each one can say this ‘for me.’” Source: Pope Francis Speaks to Our Hearts: Words of Challenge and Hope. HOLY  WEEK

PASCHAL TRIDUUM

The Easter Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday, also known as Maundy Thursday. It reaches its high point at the Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday and ends with the Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. The Triduum is the summit of the Liturgical Year commemorating Christ’s Paschal Mystery – Jesus’ passion, death and resurrection.

GOOD FRIDAY April 14th

Ecumenical Walk 1 PM

Passion of the Lord & Holy Communion 7:30 PM

“Good Friday is the day on which Catholics commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The events of Good Friday are commemorated in the Stations of the Cross, a 14-step devotion often performed by Catholics during Lent and especially on Good Friday.”

Source: www.catholic.org

Join us for this year’s Ecumenical Walk beginning at 1 PM at Church of the Atonement located at 97 Highwood Avenue (corner of Engle Street), Tenafly and proceeding through Tenafly with stops at selected churches for scripture readings and prayers. The Ecumenical Walk ends at Trinity Lutheran Church (430 Knickerbocker Road) at approximately 3 PM. Completing the walk is not necessary to participate.

FAST & ABSTINENCE

GOOD FRIDAY is a day of both Fast and Abstinence. If possible, the fast on Good Friday is continued until the Easter Vigil (Holy Saturday night) as the “paschal fast” to honor the suffering and death of the Lord Jesus, and to prepare ourselves to share more fully and to celebrate more readily His Resurrection.

On a day of Fast, only one full meal is permitted and two smaller meals which, if added together, would not exceed the main meal in quantity. Those between the ages of 18 and 59 are obliged to fast. On a day of Abstinence, no meat may be eaten. Those who have reached the age of 14 are obliged by the law of abstinence.

HOLY THURSDAY April 13th

Mass of the Lord’s Supper 7:30 PM

Washing of Feet

Exposition & Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament following Mass until 11 PM

“Holy Thursday is the commemoration of the Last Supper of Jesus Christ, when he established the sacrament of Holy Communion prior to his arrest and crucifixion. The central observance

of Holy Thursday is the ritual reenactment of the Last Supper at Mass. He also establishes the special priesthood for his disciples, which is distinct from the ‘priesthood of all believers.’ Christ washed the feet of his disciples, who would become the first priests.”

Source: www.catholic.org

The priests and deacons of Our Lady of Mount Carmel invite you to have your feet washed on Holy Thursday, April 13th at the Mass of the Lord’s Supper.

HOLY SATURDAY April 15th

Blessing of Easter Food Baskets 12 NOON

The blessing of Easter foods on Holy Saturday has been an important tradition in Slavic countries. Today people of different ethnic backgrounds practice this beautiful tradition. While the foods to be blessed are varied among families, several foods have symbolic meaning:

eggs - symbolize life and Christ's resurrection bread - symbolic of Jesus, the Bread of Life lamb - represents Christ, the Paschal Lamb salt - represents purification horseradish - symbolic of the bitter sacrifice of Christ ham - symbolic of great joy and abundance

Sources: www.catholicculture.org, https://en.wikipedia.org The priests of Our Lady of Mount Carmel extend to you an invitation to bring your Easter food baskets to the Church on Holy Saturday, April 15th for a special blessing at 12 Noon.

Easter Vigil Mass

8 PM

One of the unique aspects of the Easter Vigil is the recounting of the outstanding deeds of the history of salvation. The vigil is divided into four parts: Service of Light, Liturgy of the Word, Liturgy of Baptism, and Liturgy of the Eucharist.

Sources: www.usccb.org, www.catholicculture.org We look forward to celebrating this beautiful liturgy with you, your family and friends. Join us outside of the Church as we light and bless the Easter fire.

The celebration of Christian initiation takes place at the Easter Vigil liturgy. If you or someone you know has been thinking about becoming a member of the Catholic Church, but would first like information about the process, please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662.

Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church offers adult faith sharing groups. Please contact us if you are interested in participating in any of these groups or if you would like more information.

v v v

ADULT SPIRITUALITY SHARING GROUP will be on hiatus. Meetings will be resumed on Tuesday, May 16th from 1 PM to 2 PM in the School Conference Room. Contact Deacon Lex at [email protected] or 201-568-6819 for more info.

WOMEN’S SHARING GROUP is reading and discussing the book “Hidden Women of the Gospels” by Kathy Coffey. Please call Sr. Regina at 201-871-4662 for more information about this group or if you would like to join.

MEN’S CORNERSTONE GROUP meets every other Wednesday at 7:30 PM at St. Mary’s Church in Closter. Our next meeting will be on April 19th. Please call Deacon Michael Giuliano at 201-983-1591 or Bill Angresano at 201-370-2698 if you have any questions. All men are welcome!

“So, how is your prayer life?

There is perhaps nothing more telling about the life of a Christian than the answer to this question. It is one thing to judge the past external behaviors of a person, but it is what is taking place inside a person that speaks most about the future.”

“If you want God to hear your prayers,

hear the voice of the poor. If you wish God to anticipate your wants,

provide those of the needy without waiting for them to ask you.

Especially anticipate the needs of those who are ashamed to beg.

To make them ask for alms is to make them buy it.”
