Fifth Sunday of Lent March 21, 2021

From the Desk of Fr. John Healy, Parochial Vicar

On the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis released an Apostolic Letter about Saint Joseph and has declared a "Year of Saint Jo-seph" which is being observed from December 8, 2020 to December 8, 2021. The letter, Patris corde (a father's heart), was released on the 150th anniver-sary of the proclamation of Saint Joseph as patron of the Universal Church. The Pope wrote, After Mary, the Mother of God, no saint is mentioned more frequently in the papal mag-isterium than Joseph, her spouse… Now one hun-dred fifty years after his proclamation as Patron of the Catholic Church by the Blessed Pius IX (8 Decem-ber 1870) I would like to share some personal reflec-tions on this extraordinary figure, so close to our own human experience. For, as Jesus says, 'out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.' (Mt 12:34) My desire to do so increased during these months of pandemic, when we experienced amid the crisis, how our lives are woven together and sustained by ordi-nary people, people often overlooked. People who do not appear in newspaper or magazine headlines, or on the latest television show, yet in these very days are surely shaping the decisive events of our his-tory. Doctors, nurses, storekeepers and supermarket workers, cleaning personnel, care givers, transport workers, men and women working to provide essen-tial services and public safety, volunteers, priests, men and women religious and so very many others. They understood that no one is saved alone… How many people daily exercise patience and offer hope, taking care to spread not panic, but shared responsi-bility. How many fathers, mothers, grandparents and teachers are showing our children, in small every day ways, how to accept and deal with a crisis by adjust-ing their routines, looking ahead and encouraging the practice of prayer. How many are praying, making

sacrifices and interceding for the good of all. Each of us can discover in Joseph, the man who goes unno-ticed, a daily, discreet and hidden presence- an inter-cessor, a support and a guide in times of trouble. Saint Joseph reminds us that those who appear hid-den or in the shadows can play an incomparable role in the history of salvation. A word of recognition and of gratitude is due to them all.

Hail, Guardian of the Redeemer

Spouse of the Blessed Virgin Mary To you God trusted His only begotten Son:

In you Mary placed her trust; With you Christ became man.

Blessed Joseph, to us too, Show yourself a father,

And guide us in the path of life. Obtain for us, grace, mercy and courage,

And defend us from every evil. Amen (From the conclusion of Patris corde)

A C T Beginning April 6, in addition to our Wednesday night Confessions from 7-8pm at Blessed Sacrament, Confes-sions will be heard on the first Tuesday of the month at 3pm at both churches. For Blessed Sacrament, please enter through the East St. entrance. There will no longer be Confessions on Saturdays until further notice.

E F D You can help beautify our churches for Easter by mak-ing a donation in the memory of or in honor of a loved one. There are donation envelopes available at the en-trances of both churches for Easter flowers. Please remember to neatly print the name of your loved one. You can put your envelope in the collection basket or mail it to the Parish Offices. The deadline to have your intention included in the Easter Bulletin is Wednesday, March 24.

CRS R B We are called to join our faith community—and more than 14,000 Catholic communities across the United States—in a life-changing Lenten journey with CRS Rice Bowl. Pick up your family’s CRS Rice Bowl from the back of either church. During the 40 days of Lent, we can reflect on the challenge of global hunger and how it affects our human family.

Rice Bowls can be returned on Palm Sunday, March 28 after all Masses.

S C

We will be holding Stations of the Cross every Friday through March 26.

3pm Blessed Sacrament 7pm St. Mary

The Stations of the Cross began as the practice of pi-ous pilgrims to Jerusalem who would retrace the final journey of Jesus Christ to Calvary. Later, for the many who wanted to pass along the same route, but could not make the trip to Jerusalem, a practice developed that eventually took the form of the stations currently found in almost every church. The 14 devotions, or stations, focus on specific events of His last day, beginning with His condemnation. At each station, the individual recalls and meditates on a specific event from Christ's last day. Specific prayers are recited, then the individual moves to the next station until all 14 are complete.

We invite you to join us on this holy journey.

R The Light is on for You will be on Wednesdays from 7-8pm at both churches (no Confession on March 31).

The Light is On For You will be held at all the parishes and chapels of the Archdiocese of Boston which will be open for individual confession. The Archdiocese has set up a website, www.TheLightIsOnForYou.org, to help you prepare. It has videos on the Sacrament of Recon-ciliation, sheets on how to make a good confession, answers to frequently-asked questions and more.

Please make plans to come on Lenten Wednesdays and spread the word of this special outreach of mercy to those you know.

The Walpole Knights of Columbus has resumed collecting bottles and cans at the Council Hall, 137 Stone St. in Wal-pole. You can leave cans and bottles at the back door of the Hall anytime, as they are retrieved daily.

The proceeds will benefit the charity fund, which donates funds to needy families in our two parishes and other charity requests.

K C The Walpole Knights of Columbus Council 1319, is beginning a membership campaign. The K of C is a Catholic ser-vice organization that is dedicated to living the Catholic faith by serving our families, our church and our community at large.

Your Walpole Council is very active in the community with programs that meet a wide range of needs. If you have a desire to deepen your Catholic experience, the K of C can help fill that need with a membership in Council 1319.

If you would like to discuss possible membership with one of our members, you can connect on our Facebook page, Walpole Knights of Columbus, kofcwal-pole or by calling our Deputy Grand Knight Ozzie Ceurvals at 508-668-5455.

We offer a “Virtual Prayer Group” every Saturday morn-ing from 9:00 – 10:00 am. Join Deacon Rey Spadoni as we prayerfully consider the readings of the next day, Sunday, which can be found at www.usccb.org. It’s an opportunity to connect, share, and pray and all are welcome. Each week, we read the next day’s Mass readings and one member provides a prayer reflec-tion. All members are welcome to respectfully offer comments and share thoughts on the theme of the re-flection and Mass readings. We include prayers for spe-cial intentions each week as well. Most of the reflec-tions are posted the following day at www.ComposingCatholic.com. This meeting will be held via Zoom and can be accessed by following the link below. Easter Help The Saint Vincent de Paul Society is a volunteer group of parishioners serving the needs of the poor in our community. Because of the pandemic we have been social distancing and have not been meeting face to face with our neighbors. Thanks to your generosity, we are able to help our less fortunate neighbors pay their rent, keep the lights on, and put food on their tables.

Everyone in need should be able to have a nice Easter meal to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you and you family are in need of some help this Easter, please give us a call. We can help! 508-476-6003. Please visit us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/SVDPWALPOLE

God bless you all.

A safety issue has come to our attention from our Blessed Sacrament neighbors. We ask that our parish-ioners do not park along Route 27 in areas that obstruct the public bus route. In an effort to keep everyone safe, we would like to remind parishioners to park in the church parking lot. Thank you for your cooperation.

Due to an uptick in the virus and with the flu season ap-proaching we have decided to revise our communion protocol one more time. We will no longer be offering the host to be received on the tongue after Mass. We appreciate your understanding and patience. As we move forward through the pandemic, we will continue to update our safety measures in our effort to keep our parishioners healthy and safe.

D W C To follow safety protocol, the windows in our churches will be left open as much as possible for ventilation reasons. Please be prepared and dress warmly when you come to Mass.

NICENE CREED I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heav-en, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon-tius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

S C – N W Next week’s second collection is for the St. Vincent de Paul Society.
