3-CREATE bio-plastic samples
-CHECK/HILIGHT the SAMPLE your team was assigned to make.
-Follow instructions exactly to ensure accurate samples
[these will be shared with all groups]
-The recipe BELOW makes 9 SAMPLES.
MATERIALS
-250 mL beaker -balance -hot plate -vinegar
-graduated cylinder[s] -weighing tray -food coloring
-corn starch / tapioca starch / gelatin
-glass stir rod -spoon -beaker tongs -1% glycerol
-6 foil baking cups / 6 petri dish -hot pad
3-CREATE bio-plastic samples
PREP
__1- Gather 6 foil baking cups and 3 petri dishes from FRONT CART.
PROCEDURE
-you must be ACCURATE for correct results
[use EXACT measurements / QUALITY CONTROL]
__1- Using a 400 mL beaker ADD the following in this order
[use your “recipe” for specific amounts].
-water [large graduated cylinder]
-vinegar [large graduated cylinder]
-starch/salt [tray/spoon]
-gelatin 1 pkg = 8g
-1% glycerol [syringe]
-4 drops food coloring
STIR as you ADD ingredients!
__2-Place Beaker on HOT PLATE [level 5]
-Using a stirring rod, gently STIR all materials together. [STIR CONTINUOUSLY]
3-CREATE bio-plastic samples
__3-SLOWLY heat to a GENTLE boil. Do not boil your sample vigorously!
-heat until liquid changes consistency
-as soon as the liquid changes consistency,
-remove from heat and continue stirring.
__4-Using beaker tongs or hot pad, REMOVE from heat.
__5-GENTLY stir to remove any air bubbles.
__6- Quickly POUR your sample EVENLY into SIX baking cups [12g] and 3 petri
dishes [15g]
-you do NOT want any bubbles or foam
__7-PLACE completed samples in designated box.
3-CREATE bio-plastic samples
__8. CLEAN UP [IMMEDIATELY!]
-rinse beaker / stirring rod with soap/water
-set beaker above sink to dry
-rinse graduated cylinders [rinse numerous times-these MUST be clean!]
-set above sink to dry
-replace all materials to designated area
__9. READ INGREDIENT FACTS [back page]
