This June We’re talking about...Google Glass

The new Google Glass is causing a storm of controversy regarding privacy. Also, how much more technology do we need in our world? Those tech-lovers out there will probably disagree, but these glasses do most things your fancy smartphone can do. Are we really too lazy now to use our thumbs? They’re rumoured to be released in 2014, but we’d rather keep our money in our pocket and use our phone / tablet / laptop instead.

Canon PowerShot SX260 HS

This Canon PowerShot camera has some brilliant features. The wide angle lens allows for 20x optical zoom so that you can get even more up close and personal with your subject. More exciting is the GPS feature, which recognises where your photos were taken when you upload them at home. It also works really well in low-light to get the best photo wherever you are at any time of day. You can pick one up at PC World for £179.99.

In July we’ll be laughing about

Eurovision, discussing Andy Murray’s chances

at Wimbledon, our obsession

with sunglasses and the strange

trend of women’s denim shorts

which look more like knickers.

We’re talking about...Festival Season

Whether you’re heading to Reading or Glastonbury, or something small and local, festival fever sets in at the start of every summer. Shopping for neon, band and slogan tees is often first on the list, while women stock up on dry shampoo. Tickets are selling out already for most festivals, but now could be a good time to consider plans for next summer. Reading festival tickets go on sale again very soon after the curent one ends!

Summer HolidaysIf you’re feeling as sun-deprived as us, you’ll be desperate for a holiday too! There’s nothing like getting on a plane for another country, having zero phone reception and feeling the hot sun on your skin as you relax on the sand. Raise your hand if you’ve already wasted hours scrolling through holiday websites! If you haven’t got something lined up already, you can save a fortune booking something last minute.

Individual StyleOur models, Holly and Thom, helped us out when we found this to be a hot talking point. Both students love to show off their look, so they were more than happy to jump in front of the camera. Individual style doesn’t have to be about following the latest trends like a sheep, it’s about knowing what looks good, and more importantly, what looks good on YOU.

CupAre you one of those people who cannot get through the day without a regular dose of caffeine? Bloggy Style investigates what happens when it’s no longer the actual coffee causing the craving.

Danny, a 26-year-old graphic designer from Surrey loves coffee cups.

“Holding a coffee is like having a friend with me,” he says.

It’s the most-seen-with-a-celebrity accessory out there. It makes the beholder feel more important, expensive, and unavailable. It’s not a pricey coat, a scarf, or even a perfect pair of shoes. This is the humble takeaway coffee cup.

“I once bought myself a huge latte to go shopping with, and realised about half an hour later that I hadn’t taken a sip. In a strange way, it makes me appear

busy with lots to do. I should probably save the cup as you would with a water bottle, just to take out and about with me,” Danny continues.

But nothing makes a person look more like they ‘need to be somewhere’, and unlike a handbag, no-one is paying attention to the brand splashed up the side.

It would seem then that the fascination and need for it lies not in requiring the caffeine hit, but in the way it can ease the loneliness when your friends dump you, and how it can be the finishing touch to an almost perfect outfit.

We are frequently bombarded Pippa Middleton is regularly spotted out and about clutching a giant coffee.

with photos of celebrities clutching a cup of the hot-stuff while out and about. It would seem they are constantly carrying one around with their right arm permanently poised in the coffee-holding position.

Pippa Middleton is regularly seen marching the streets clutching a giant cup, and it isn’t unusual to spot Victoria Beckham in a magazine, pounding the high street sipping a coffee. And for good reason; do they look like they want to be disturbed?

Blogs dedicated to the trend have now sprung up. Celebswithcoffee.wordpress.com hosts pap shots of American celebrities attempting to enjoy some refreshment, and even claims Britney Spears is the most photographed celeb-with-coffee! Thatcoffeehouse.tumblr.com is full of coffee shop-related images. It hopes to unite coffee lovers, because when it isn’t a takeaway cup, it’s a mug of some kind with a warm, inviting backdrop of tables and squishy sofas.

It’s now a fashion to take photos of a hot coffee, loaded with whipped cream, sprinkles, the works, for it to be loaded up onto a blog – because everyone needs to see the latest instalment of the Coffee-Shop-Diaries.

Emma, a 22-year-old student has no idea why she regularly uploads photos of her coffee. “Now I think about it, it seems really strange and silly! I’m not sure my followers need to see it, but it looks really great on Tumblr. People feel so relaxed in a coffee shop which is what I love about them, so I think it’s fair for me to share that.”

Major coffee chains assist as much as possible by placing a shop every few metres down the high street. They know to do this after sending out a lucky employee to take a walk, while glugging a coffee, and working out how soon they finish it. It’s at this point they build another shop.

This obviously isn’t true, but it’s easy to believe when you stroll down London’s Oxford Street.

While some might complain that we all know what a hot beverage looks like, it’s still making a regular appearance as we scroll down our dashboards.

Are we all guilty of it? Yes. Blogging is showing-off the world you love, and if coffee plays a major part in it, then is there really a problem here?

Nothing makes a person look more like they need to besomewhere

It has set the scene for many movies, but no amount of images can justify the magnificence that is Las Vegas.

It is difficult to understand how it looks, sounds and feels until you take a stroll down the famous Strip. Lined with grand 4 and 5 star hotels which tower above the tourists, it is hard to see how the location has been described as ‘tacky’.

You won’t be short of things to look at and you should expect anything. Whether it’s topless dancers in the street or a rollercoaster in a hotel, it’s shouldn’t be a surprise. Rules (and laws) go out of the window - you might be surprised to see people marching down the street downing pints at midday, and people sat inside the casinos chuffing away at a cigarette.

You don’t need to be confined to your own hotel either. The hotels themselves are part of the attraction and you can take a walk through any of them. Most have a theme, whether it’s Italy at The Venetian, or a royal castle at Excalibur, they suit all kinds of tastes. Some have nightclubs with the most well-known being at The Cosmopolitan and the Wynn, where Prince Harry famously partied.

If you want to spend an afternoon elsewhere, you can take a bus down to the old strip and see Glitter Gulch – named because the ceiling lights up at nightime. Imagine Vegas being full of trashy light-up signs and old men at the roulette tables? This is where you can see it. It’s worth keeping your wits about you though and keeping a close eye on your belongings. It’s a real eye-opener and worth seeing, but you’ll be glad to get back to the glitz of the new Vegas.

It can work out to be an expensive trip, with the hotels being luxurious and usually on a room-only basis. You’ll need enough money to try your luck on the slots, go shopping in the incredible Fashion Show Mall and eat at the gorgeous restaurants, but it is a trip that will never be forgotten and you’ll be itching to go back!

FestivalOf Colours

The traditional Indian festival is being taken around Europe, and for the

first time, London is playing host to this magnificent display of colour and music. Who wouldn’t want to go

to a rave-style festival which involves throwing coloured powder at your mates?

This Summer, London will be hosting a unique event for the very first time. Holi Festival 2013 will be making it’s debut in the UK at Battersea Power Station. Holi is a popular Hindu celebration traditionally held in the Springtime on the last full moon of the lunar month. Add in

to the mix, the bright, vibrant powder being thrown into the air by revellers, symbolising the pranks of Krishna, while also letting people express themselves in moments of pure joy and freedom. The time in which the weather changes from Spring to Summer is believed to cause viral fever and cold. The throwing of coloured powder is believed to have a medicinal significance. This is because traditionally the powders are made of Neem, Kumkum, Haldi and Bilva, which are medicinal herbs, prescribed by Ayurvedic doctors. The use of these coloured powders has become more popular in recent years, being seen in more mainstream aspects of Western culture. The Colour Run is a 5k paint race which was started in 2012,

in which participants are covered in different

colours of powder. This race has no winners or official times, but celebrates the tradition of the Holi Festival. In 2010, Linkin Park incorporated scenes of this with their band members throwing coloured powder at one another in the video for their song The Catalyst. Ke$ha also used this same idea in the video to her song Take It Off. The festival has also been seen on television and film in more recent years, prominently featuring in The Amazing Race 13, Outsourced, Psych and An Idiot Abroad. Germany played host to the Holi Festival in 2012, using four different locations and attracting 25,000 guests. Their popularity also soared on Facebook reaching over a quarter of a million fans. People were left mesmerised by the beauty of the celebration, releasing colourful packets of powder every hour, on the hour. In between those times the drinks were flowing and festival-goers were raving to the sound of top DJ mixes.

Holi Festival in 2012, using four different locations, attracting

This is a prime example of how people from different cultures can come together, with different beliefs, values and opinions, yet put that to one side and just enjoy playing and dancing to music in

what is to be a totally unique experience. What better place to host it than London, a mixing pot of many cultures, a place that exemplifies Britain being great. The event takes place on August 10th 2013, with gates opening at 12pm and ending at 10pm. The tickets will go on sale very soon, and the prices and dates of this will be announced on the Holi Festival Facebook page. They will also soon be announcing some brilliant music acts. If the Holi festival is not for you then look no further as after taking a year’s break Glastonbury is back with a bang, with acts such as The Rolling Stones, Arctic Monkeys and Mumford and Sons headlining. This festival has something for everyone no matter what genre of music they prefer. Also debuting this year will be a new dance area,

the Silver Hayes tent, playing tracks of house reggae, dancehall and afro-beat featuring artists such as Rudimental and Aluna George. Come rain or shine one thing is guaranteed this Summer - everybody will be having a good time. The way, in which revellers put their middle fingers up to the English weather, no matter how far up their bodies the mud reaches, sums up the spirit of the British people.

Blogyour way to

Skinny

This works!d

Page 15: Bloggy Style

What is the first thing you do in the morning? Grab some breakfast, or

make sure that the gap between your thighs is increasing? You’d like to think you’d go and grab a big bowl of cereal, maybe even some pancakes to start your day - sadly, this is clearly not the case with a lot of people.

Why are women so obsessed with the ‘thigh gap’? Trying to compete with stick thin, size-zero celebrities is not only bizarre, it’s down-right dangerous.

The internet is full of blogs about the need to lose weight in order to be happy. Being thin is not the ultimate way to look, and coming across a post screaming out to readers, ‘Think Before You Eat,’ as if it’s a crime to indulge even in the smallest slither of chocolate cake.isn’t appealing. Okay, maybe you should think before you eat in terms of buckets full of fried chicken, but it’s about finding a balance.

Is there a growing hate for curvy, voluptuous women? It almost seems as though these bloggers are advertising and persuading young women to be thin. Some women are embracing their curves and aspiring to look like curvy celebrities, but unfortunately, the majority of blog posts are the complete opposite to this.

Type ‘skinny’ into the search bar and the results are frightening. Ellie Galvin, 19, is an aspiring model and started her Tumblr account in August 2012. She spotted the regular posts surrounding weight issues and started to panic about her own looks.

‘Thinspiration’… How has this become the latest trend? Blogs are streamed with frightening images of fragile, stick thin frames.

“I joined Tumblr hoping for some inspiration as I’m an aspiring model, but it gave me the wrong inspiration I was looking for. I started to follow blogs that were forcing Bulimia and Anorexia onto teenage girls. I heard of these blogs from girls at college, but never thought it would influence me like it did with them, I never thought it would make much of an impact!”

So how has the obsession started? Possibly from the most obvious source – celebrities and models, and the way they are consistently over analysed in the media. “She’s too fat, she’s

too thin” - What is classified as fa t and th in anyway? Fashion model Cara Delevingne, is a 20-year-old, successful icon who’s s t ick th in frame constantly fills up blog feeds, and rightly so, but this doesn’t mean young girls should aspire to this. She’s a model, she’s meant to be thin - it doesn’t mean it’s healthy or the perfect way to look.

It needs to be recognised that it’s more important to concentrate on being fit and healthy instead of being thin. Apparently priorities have changed over the years. It’s absurd how some people have become so vain and self-absorbed. Daily, people spend most of their time worrying about their physical appearance before they step out their front door, not the fact that they may not wake up that morning feeling healthy. Surely if you feel good within yourself, and feel healthy, you wouldn’t need to starve yourself. False happiness or actual happiness? You’d think the answer would be obvious.

women?

n today’s culture, taking photos of our lunch, coffees and cakes is the ‘in’ thing to do. Snapping up our meals and transforming them into artistic formats appears to be turning into a worldwide trend. It seems now that you can’t eat a single thing without

taking a picture beforehand to share with your friends and followers. Blogging’s latest trend is ‘Food Porn.’ Not only is this a recent trend

in the Blogosphere, but there is similar content all over the Internet! Just type ‘food’ into google, and thousands of sites will be full of perfectly poised snapshots. There are actual sites dedicated to ‘Food Porn,’ as if it’s a major talking point in society. High-res, mouth-watering images being snapped up left, right and centre surely takes away the ambiance from eating out. Step into your average restaurant or coffee shop and you are

guaranteed to spot at least one savvy snapper on their phone, and it’s pretty obvious where these images are going to end up – online! How many of you have taken a photo of your delicious treats? The real question is, why do we do it? Truthfully, we like to show off, blasting portraits of our flavoured coffees or juicy

fruits allow others to envy all the delights we indulge in, allowing for inspirational, instagrammed images to trend.

It seems now that dining out isn’t a luxury, instead it’s as simple as gettting a thrill out of taking snapshots of what we are about to eat. So what happens when restaurants ban photos from being taken? Would you enjoy the food less and have a less exciting experience of wining and dining? Taking pictures of your dishes has become a common trend to do, like taking pictures of where you go on holiday, buildings, and family events. Surely taking pictures of your purchases is acceptable? But what about respecting others around you - do you worry about their experience or just delve into taking a picture of your food because you need to show the world how delicious your dish is? Clearly taking photo’s of your food on your phone gives you a sense of enjoyment.

Like any picture taken, it generates a memory, something that you enjoyed at any one moment.

Has it gone too far? Has taking pictures of our food overwhelmed all of our priorities? It could simply be views that food has taken a stance of becoming a fashion piece!

We love this because: It’s a simple outfit but because it’s slim fit it smartens up the look. If we’re honest though, we really loved his hair, sunglasses, and his friendly attitude.

Hannah, 20, London Jake, 20, Wolverhampton Amy, 21, NottinghamWe love this because: Her plain outfit is really drawing attention to her embellished bag and gladiator sandals. It’s very laid-back and practical, with the accessories adding a stylish edge.

We love this because: Everything is matching! It’s usually a look only pulled off by small kids, but the patterned tee, bold sunnies and comfy denim cut-offs make this outfit look very pulled-together.

We love this because: She is refusing to give up her furry, winter scarf! Her outfit is very simple, but the scarf is adding a touch of glamour, and her statement bag is, well, making a statement.

How to make...

macaroonsFood

Macaroons are trending worldwide in the Blogosphere. With a reputation for being beautiful and evidentially picturesque meringue cookies, it’s about time a simple recipe was created for those to aspire to create these tasty delicacies.

Cooking time: 15 minsDifficulty: aae

What you will need:4 egg whites70g caster sugar230g icing sugar120g ground almondsPinch of saltAdd your choice of food colourings and flavourings for a unique look.

here’s What you’ll need to do: 1. Preheat the oven 200°c/gas mark 3. Mix the icing sugar and almonds into a bowl using a whisk in order to allow for a fine mixture.

2. In a separate dish, whisk the egg whites with a pinch of salt (just to add a hint of flavour). Gradually whisking in the caster sugar until the mixture is of a thick consistency.

3. Mix in flavour extract and colouring at this point, or separate the mixture if you are planning on making more than one flavour of macaroon.

4. Combine the mixtures together and mix well.

5. Fold the egg white mixture – the mixture should be tough and easy to fold. Line baking trays with baking paper. Place macaroon mixture into piping bag.

6. Pipe the mixture on the baking paper and leave the mixture to stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. You should be able to touch them without the mixture moving or sticking to you.

7. Bake for 15 minutes, and then remove to cool.

If you are making a filling:

1. Place chocolate in a bowl. In a saucepan, bring the cream to a boil, once boiled remove from heat.2. Pour the cream into the chocolate mixture. Leave it for 30 seconds. Stir the chocolate and the cream mixture until the chocolate is completely melted. 3. Scatter butter pieces on the mixture and stir until well combined. 4. Chill the mixture before filling them in-between the macaroon shells.

Making macaroons is a hard art to master. So hopefully

this step-by-step guide will help you along the way to a

delicious masterpiece. GOOD LUCK!

#26 My Easter Holidays (so far)becamorton.blogspot.co.uk

BONJOUR. I just thought I’d fill you all in on what I’ve been up to lately.

I broke up from uni for Easter a few weeks ago, so it’s been really nice to spend some time at home with my family. Usually when I’m home I’m here, there and everywhere catching up with people, but to be honest I’ve been quite lazy since I’ve been back this time. I spent the first three days sorting out all of my music on my computer. It might not sound like a big task, but it took me flippin’ AGES. I feel SO much better for doing it though and am LOVING that my iTunes is now all pretty and neat, YAY! I also found some absolute GEMS that I had forgotten about whilst they were hidden within the muddle that was my iTunes. Songs that I’ve particularly been enjoying are: Twice - Little Dragon, Arctic Monkeys - Baby I’m Yours and Mystery Jets (just in general).

My time at home got a little more exciting when my parents, brother and I went to Champagney en Vanoise for a ‘skiing’ holiday. When we first arrived it was quite foggy, however we hit the slopes anyway but (as you’ll see from these photos) you literally couldn’t see a thing so it just wasn’t enjoyable. We also had some issues with the car thanks to an overly large speed bump, so that also interfered with skiing. So in the end, it wasn’t really a ‘skiing’ holiday at all! Haha. It was still nice to go away somewhere though, and mum and I went to the pool a couple of times which was nice.

We also stopped in Vimy on the way home and visited the Canadian War Memorial there (Pictured). I’m a sucker for anything history/war related so I was loving life. We visited the memorial first (which was originally built in 1936 I believe, but has recently been restored in 2007 or something like that) THEN by chance we ended up having a tour of the underground tunnels, and trenches (of both the Germans and Canadians). Some people probably find this stuff so boring, but it was so interesting seeing what it was

all like. It’s also SO strange to think that a place which was so peaceful was once a battlefield... BASICALLY IT WAS JUST SO GOOD AND I LOVED IT AND YEAH.

FINALLY I couldn’t leave France without stocking up on La Roche-Posay Solution Micellaire Physiologique (as it’s so cheap compared to UK prices and I love it) and having a look at other skincare products. I’ll do a post on what I bought whilst I was away later in the week - so keep your eyes peeled.

I’ll be back soooooon.

Becmo xo

So this is the fog we were faced with when we first arrived, and what the visibility was like on the slopes...

BOOHOO.
