Blood, Sweat & Tears Bulletin

Issue #4

On Saturday, November 4, the roads

to Lawn, PA was once again filled with cancer fighting runners and

walkers eager to participate in the

6th annual Blood, Sweat and Tears 5

-Miler.

While there was a bit of chill in the air, it gradually warmed up and the

sun even came out, giving the par-

ticipants a beautiful day to run and

walk for a cure. As the cars pulled

in, they got to see a couple new ad-

ditions we were able to offer this year. The Perk Up Coffee Truck was

ready for business with a nice col-

lection of coffees and lattes to take

the chill of their bones. A Lularoe

fashion stand was set up offering a wide selection of their latest fashions

while the most hard to miss attrac-

tion was the 32 foot mobile rock

climbing wall that towered over the

fire hall parking lot.

Greeted by some pumped up music supplied by Occasions DJs, the run-

ners and walkers entered the fire

hall to register and get their t-shirts

and runner’s bags. While there, they

could check out our bake sale, view

the many gift baskets for sale and buy tickets for our prize drawing.

Harvey’s Bar-B-Que out of Mt. Joy

was there, along with a historical

exhibit from the Rails to Trails His-

torian. Outside, children of the par-ticipants got to enjoy our 25 foot

bounce house.

By 8:45, everyone was gathered in

the parking lot and were greeted by

our guest emcee, MaryEllen Pann

from Fox 43. This was her second year as emcee and she has em-

braced our cause. After a

morning prayer and a playing of God Bless America, an-

nouncements were given. The

crowd was told that the previ-

ous Saturday, the first Emily

Whitehead Foundation Gala was held in King of Prussia

that raised over $450,000! That

brought a nice cheer since

many in the crowd know Emi-

ly’s story and the mission of

the Foundation that BST ac-tively supports.

Prior to the start of the run,

Tim Harner spoke about his

battle with leukemia that took

him from a hospital bed in Her-shey to the start line of the

Boston Marathon, all within a

13 month time frame. He urged

the crowd to “Never give up and

live life, don’t let life live you.”

At 9:00, MaryEllen sounded the air horn and the runners

and walkers were off. The al-

lure of prize money caused

many to take off at a brisk pace

while other wanted to just en-

joy the scenic walk around the course. With fire police at every

turn and a police car and an

ambulance behind them, we

are sure the runners and walk-

ers felt very safe. Twenty eight minutes after the sounding of

the horn, the first runner came

across the finish line, guaran-

teeing them a $100 prize.

Over the next hour, all the run-

ners and walkers successfully fin-ished the course and headed back

to the fire hall to savor their

morning on the course. Many en-

joyed the hot pork barbeque sand-

wiches while the bake sale stand was hit pretty hard and by mid-

morning, was completely sold out.

Both adults and children took ad-

vantage of the climbing wall to

test their strength and skill.

It was great seeing people sticking around and renewing old ac-

quaintances and the festive at-

mosphere of the event.

The BST run is always the culmina-

tion of my yearly fund raising. Throughout the course of the

year, we do sub sales, sports-

man’s drawings, restaurant

days and our yearly fund raising

drive in January. When the money is all in (and the bills are

paid), I present Emily with a

check at the Philadelphia Mara-

thon which is the third week in

November.

This year, I got to present her with my single biggest check

ever! So thanks to everyone

who helped make this check of

$10,000 a reality. Now on to

2018.

Save The Date!

The date for the 2018 Blood, Sweat & Tears 5-Miler is tentatively scheduled for Satur-day, November 3. We will confirm it after the first of the year when we seek township and police department approval. So follow us on FaceBook for any updates. And feel free to leave comments on how we can make BST 2018 the best one yet.

We can say we are excited about something new we are definitely adding in 2018. Plans are underway to add a 5K fun run in addition to the standard 5 miler. This way, people can have their choice of either. We think this will make BST a more attractive event, es-pecially for those with young families who want to do it together or for those who are not up to a five mile run. The start line and the finish line will remain the same but the 5K participants will be spending more time on the rails to trails.

We are also working on some other major initiatives which we will announce on Face-book upon confirmation. We hope to start early registration on June 1, 2018.
