ABOUT KENPO KARATE  "I come to you with only Karate, empty hands, I have no weapons, but should I be forced to defend myself, my principles or my honor, should it be a matter of life or death, of right or wrong; then here are my weapons, Karate, my empty hands." -Ed Parker Kenpo Karate is a self-defense system characterized by fast explosions of multiple strikes delivered to multiple targets. Kenpo Karate does not so much teach a set of standard responses to a set of limited scenarios, but rather teaches a set of principles that can be applied in any situation. A simple translation of Kenpo Karate would be “Law of the Fist and Empty Hand”. Kenpo Karate is a comprehensive system of modern self-defense. It is a deliberate and scientific take on modern self-defense. Kenpo utilizes striking combinations and Jujutsu to control an attacker. Kenpo Karate as taught at Bluegrass Martial Arts is an adjusted version of the American and Traditional Kenpo Systems. There is greater emphasis on restraining an opponent, and targets are adjusted to be appropriate for a family friendly setting This system of martial art has no eastern religious truth claims or faith practices. It is a complete system of self-defense that is coherent with the Christian worldview. If you are wishing to study martial arts, but you do not want exposure to non-Christian ideas, the Bluegrass Martial Arts Academy will be right for you. We encourage Wisdom through disciplined Bible study and Action through a personal active ministry to the world. Bluegrass Martial Arts is dedicated to produce Agents that are equipped to protect the Sanctity of Life of everyone, and represent a Community set apart within a lost world.

GOOD WORK  Well done! You are now a 2nd kyu brown belt. You have

worked hard, and that is evident in your new belt. You are now only one level from 1st Dan Black Belt! I hope your excitement and hard work will carry over again into this next challenge of 1st Brown belt.

You will find this level a greater challenge. The basics are harder. The forms are more complex. The application of each technique becomes more advanced.

You may feel like you have regressed to the beginning all over again. Do not get frustrated. Each level by design challenges your ability a step further than the last. You may not feel like you have improved since your first class, trust me, you have. The new belt you wear proves this beyond any doubt. Enjoy the new challenge of a new belt level, and with time, you will be able to see how much improvement you have really made.

Welcome to the beginning of your journey toward 1st Brown belt.

 ABOUT THIS LEVEL

Completion of the ninth level of Kenpo Karate is rewarded with the advancement to 1st Brown belt. The material in this level will further build on the skills of earlier levels such as form, speed, power, breath control, baiting, focus, and kyusho. The next object of study will be Zanshin, the remaining mind. Physical Focus

Distraction is a common occurrence in today’s world. We have

many things we use to fill our time, even when we are waiting. Portable stereos, televisions, and even computers are as close as the latest model of cell phone. In transit you can check your email, edit your Facebook, or view the latest movie trailers on Youtube. While we can still only be in one place at one time, our minds can travel to any time or place for the sake of our own entertainment. This is not necessarily a bad thing, technology should make our lives more pleasant, but as we spend so much time mentally somewhere else, we can miss what is going on around us.

Distraction, even pleasant distraction, makes someone an easy target. The more unaware you are the easier you are to steal from. The more distracted you become, the easier it is to find yourself cornered, by someone who means you harm. Good self-defense calls for you to be aware of where you are and what is happening around you. This level will begin the discussion of being always mindful of potential danger. I hope this will already be a practice you have adopted long before reaching Black Belt. Now we will begin to attempt to be always aware, even when there is no present danger.

Zanshin translates literally as “remaining mind”. It means to stay undistracted, focused and aware of what is occurring in the moment. The natural reaction when we are attacked, is to see in tunnel vision. The peripheral areas of our vision close in on one small area. We become hypersensitive to what is right before us,

Page 5: BLUEGRASS MARTIAL ARTS · power, breath control, baiting, focus, and kyusho. The next object of study will be Zanshin, the remaining mind. Physical Focus Distraction is a common occurrence

but we lose details surrounding whatever, or whoever has our focus. Zanshin is to attempt to cultivate the hypersensitivity to include everything. Thus, the mind remains in the space you are in and calculating on all the variables there.

It takes practice to awaken one’s senses, and in training, we create a false environment, where we assimilate muscle memory reflex response to all sorts of aggressive stimuli without the real threat of danger. You know you are safe in the karate class and that your partner has no actual motives of hurting you. You coordinate a response to their attack, block, counter, then a take down, and maybe a restraining pin, then you help your partner up and it becomes their turn. It is a fun means of training and there is no need of the type of hyper-vigilance that is necessary in a life or death altercation.

If you do find yourself in a situation that demands you act, you may be ready to respond by reflex, but your mind will not be ready to stop the tunnel vision process that comes with the adrenaline rush. Your training must begin to take on a new character. Begin to extend your focus to not just your partner but across the training space to note what other pairs are in the process of doing. Do not lose what is the immediate threat, but consider where other threats could be and be ready to respond to an attack from any side.

Keep the character of fellowship in mind, this martial arts should be fun to participate in. There is a point where you can take martial arts training too seriously. It can still be a gentle and fun process while at the same time discovering a new dimension, attempting to be always alert, with a “remaining mind.”

Zanshin is the new study for the 1st Brown belt level. Do not abandon the continuing studies of the lower belt levels in your desire to understand this new theme. Every level is a new opportunity to revisit studies from earlier levels also. Make your martial arts practice a study in itself. Remember Kenpo is a martial science. We are all both warriors as well as scholars.

Page 6: BLUEGRASS MARTIAL ARTS · power, breath control, baiting, focus, and kyusho. The next object of study will be Zanshin, the remaining mind. Physical Focus Distraction is a common occurrence

The 1st Brown Belt level is also the first instructor level. Along with the requirements and challenge of the last Brown Belt level comes the responsibility of sharing the journey with a younger generation. 1st Brown Belt also includes all the material that encompasses the Kid’s Kenpo Karate classes. The Kid’s Kenpo classes should be lead by 1st brown and Black Belt students, allowing the head instructor more freedom to prepare for directing adult classes, or teach private lessons. The 1st Brown belt student should volunteer to commit to teach at least one of the Kid’s Kenpo class time slots, or offer a new class time for the good of the Academy.

Zanshin is the element the 1st Brown should begin to experiment with. This level will require the student to perform Striking Set 2, Heian Godan, and the Tiger and Crane. 1st Brown belts must be able to execute the basics with improved skill. Striking Set 2 should be executed by memory. They must take responsibility for the instruction of a Kid’s Kenpo Karate class. They must know Heian Godan, and the Tiger and Crane form. Most importantly, the 20 techniques of 1st Brown belt should be executed successfully from memory, and the student should be prepared to display the technique on a partner, or in open space with no Uke.

The student should not become distracted or frustrated that

they are not capable of performing at a mastery level. Studying any level of Kenpo Karate should be an affirming and enjoyable process. Learning this new level should be primarily a stress-free

and fun process.
