FEATURE ARTICLE

WHAT IS KARATE?This is the second of the two part series on “What is Karate”Today Karate training consists of three areas:

Kihon This covers the training of all the various stances, kicks, blocks, strikes, punches and body movements that are used in kata and kumite. These techniques can be practiced individually (to perfect a particular one) or in combinations to improve agility and fluidity of movement.

One of the key objectives of practicing kihon is to gain a greater understanding of how your body moves in order to generate as much power as possible with the minimum of effort. This power is then applied to the various defensive and offensive techniques used in kata and kumite. Also, understanding how your own body works and how to control it, is the first step towards understanding your opponent’s movements and ultimately controlling them.

KataThese are the traditional predetermined forms or patterns of karate, and the fighting of imaginary opponents. From the use of kata, the movements used in the kata can be employed in self-defence against one or more multiple attacks. In the Shotokan system there are 27 kata ranging from beginner to advanced level. Each kata teaches various principles of movement and self defence appropriate to the level of the practitioner. Also, within the moves of the different kata are various exercises for improving breathing, balance and co-ordination.

KumiteKumite or sparring is where the techniques practiced in kihon and kata are applied against an opponent. There are different formats of kumite designed for developing different skills, and appropriate for practitioners of different levels. In the most basic and controlled forms (kihon kumite), everything is predetermined and both the attacker and defender know exactly which techniques will be used and where. The only thing unknown is when. Then, at the opposite end of the spectrum is jiyu kumite (freestyle sparring), where techniques are exchanged freely. This jiyu-kumite forms the basis for competition karate or sport karate.

While Karate training formally takes place in a Dojo, the techniques learnt can be utilized anywhere and at any time to defend one-self, against one or multiple attackers.

ConclusionThe role of Karate in the modern age continues to be multi-faceted and all-inclusive. From the very young to the very old, male and female can become Karatekas. Whatever the objective - to be able to defend one-self against an attack, to become disciplined, to be a sports-person or simply to become physically fit, well-planned Karate classes can allow you to achieve your objective.

Bwoy, d TKA held its first major fund-raising activity this year entitled KARATEKAS CAN COOK HEALTHY at the Wood-brook Youth facility on April 26, 2014. The money raised from this event was used to cover some of de costs associated with sending 25 members of the national team to participate in the International Daigaku 2nd World Championships which will be held at Ryerson University Toronto, Canada from July 15 to 20, 2015.

Talk bout good food- Sensei Shim fried shrimp well seasoned and tasty and cooked on spot, baked chicken from HYATT (bess chicken I ever taste) pine apple chicken from UWI, odder kinda chicken,

lentil stew, vegetable casserole, vegetable rice, pasta, soya, pork chinese style (can’t remember the name cause ah can’t pronounce it cause it real Chinese not trini version of chinese), fresh salad, Dominic’s ham on bread( a delicious bread infused with ham), fish cooked with coconut milk, fish in odder different varieties and more.

Can’t forget the delicious dessert cakes and more importantly the jello shots from UWI (laced with alcohol- I think it was vodka) which Sensei Theo made sure and have a few. We made sure and kept it away from de chirren. We had a good time liming and reuniting with Karatekas we hadn’t seen for a while.

TKA GRADINGGrading took place on Saturday 11th April 2014 at Chinese Association. Shihan Woon a Tai was in attendance as Chief Examiner. Congratulations to our new Nidans, Anthony Thomas and Adrian Cruikshank.
