B’NAI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER B’NAI SHOLOM NEWS LET TER
Let them make Me a mikdash (holy place) that I may dwell among them. Exodus 25:8 In our Sunday morning weekday service we pray from a Conservative siddur, or prayer book. There is a sentence at the end of the Amidah, or Standing Prayer, which states, “May the Temple (the Mikdash, in Hebrew) be rebuilt in our day. There we will serve Thee with awe as in the days of old.” If David Glick, who is usually leading the service at that time, asks me to read that part, I add a phrase: “May the Temple IN OUR HEARTS be rebuilt.” My intention is that we make our lives and our community worthy to be a dwelling place for God – in place of rebuilding the Temple in Jerusalem and reinstituting animal sacrifice. Often I’ve met Christians who learn everything they think they know about Judaism from reading their Bible. Some think we still perform animal sacrifices, not realizing it hasn’t been done since the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem. Our prayer does not necessarily refer to the sacrificial system, but there are many who understand it that way. There are Jews who have prepared every item necessary for its implementation in order to be ready at a moment’s notice to resume it. Personally, I do not want animal sacrifice to be reinstituted. And I am not the only one. Rambam, Rabbi Moses ben Maimon, taught in the 12th century that the sacrificial system was a sort of way station that God meant for Judaism to grow beyond. Originally, so the theory goes, God wanted us to worship WITHOUT animal sacrifice. However, the people were accustomed to it and needed some sort of crutch with which to approach their invisible God. Korban, a Hebrew word for sacrifice, comes from the root which means to draw near. While the Temple in Jerusalem stood, that was the way we drew near to God. Since the Second Temple was destroyed our approach to God has evolved into prayer, Torah study, and works of kindness or repairing the world. On the other hand, Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook, the first Chief Rabbi of Israel, taught that in the Messianic Era animal sacrifice would be discontinued, and only plants would be brought. Until then, however, animal sacrifice as described by Torah is the best we can do. I do not want animal sacrifice to be reinstituted as a way to approach God and so do not pray that prayer without altering it. Another approach is to read the words as written but to interpret them in your mind to reflect your own understanding. Of course, another alternative is to read and understand the words exactly as written. No matter what our individual convictions regarding the Third Temple, we consider how to make our own building a holy place, a Mikdash. May we continually rebuild Your Mikdash in our midst, so that our congregation is a place where our gifts are recognized, nourished, and directed to the enrichment of others.* Rabbi Jean E. Eglinton *This idea of the synagogue is adapted from Lawrence Hoffman in Rethinking Synagogues

Brunch: 10:00 AM Book Discussion 10:30 AM
RSVP for the Brunch to the office Discussion facilitated by Deedee Mufson.
“The Amazing Adventures of the Jewish People” by Max I. Dimont. Available at Amazon.com.
There is still time for you to read it because it is a very short, interesting read! There is also a copy floating around. Check with the office for availability.
The saga of the Jewish people is a fantastic adventure story of survival against unbelievable odds. Every period of Jewish history presented a new challenge, whether persecution by a rival nation,
assimilation into a foreign culture, or internal religious dissent. In every time-period, Judaism, and the Jewish people, faced the real possibility of ceasing to exist.
But through courage, creativity, religious insight, and luck, the "saga" continues to the present day.
SELECT SATURDAYS 11:00-12:00 immediately after Shabbat Morning Service A look at famous Jews throughout the ages; whether they fell at the good end of the
spectrum, the bad end, or somewhere in between -- and a chance for you to think about where you might land.
Carole Garrison will lead the discussions of such personalities as Bugsy Siegel, King David, Hannah Arendt, Golda Meir, Bernie Madoff, Mark Spitz, Donna Gracia Nasi, & Baruch Spinoza.
November 8- BAD JEWS – Bugsy Siegel and Bernie Madoff, to name just two. Steven Snyder will fill in for Carole.
November 22 - Deborah the Judge and Prophet.

Jewish Federations Hail Passage of Resolution Condemning Anti-Semitism
Washington, D.C. – In the face of rising anti-Semitism around the world, the House of Representatives took a clear stand today against hatred and bigotry. The Jewish Federations of North America hailed the
unanimous passage of H.Res.707, which "Condemn[s] all forms of anti-Semitism and rejecting attempts to justify anti-Jewish hatred or violent attacks as an acceptable expression of disapproval or frustration over political
events in the Middle East or elsewhere."
William Daroff, senior vice president for public policy and the director of the Washington office for Jewish Federa-tions, stated, "The past few months have made it clear to all that we live in a dangerous time. Through our work with Holocaust survivors and other vulnerable populations, we at Jewish Federations have seen firsthand the importance of fighting against anti-Semitism in our communities, as well
as the need to protect and be vigilant against anti-Semitic attacks against Jewish communities in the U.S. and around the world."
The Jewish Federations, collectively among the top 10 charities on the continent, protects and enhances the well-being of Jews worldwide through the values of tikkun olam (repairing the
world), tzedakah (charity and social justice) and Torah (Jewish learning).

Starting out with a BANG for the Friday night Bar Mitzvah celebration of M.E. Ketchum! December 5 - The service M.E. is leading as Bar Mitzvah will begin at 6:00 pm with a delightfully replete Oneg Shabbat immediately afterward. (See the full announcement on page 7.) Thereafter – and through February – The Shabbat Service will begin at 6:00 pm. Come schmooze and snack at Oneg Hors D’oeuvres after the Service. For years, in many synagogues around the country there has been a move toward earlier Shabbat services. Our goal is always to make it more enticing for more people to attend services. Do you ever get home on Friday night and have no desire to leave again – even to go to service? Especially on those cold, winter evenings. This way, you can come to service right after work and then home or out to dinner. Here at B’nai Sholom, we are planning to try that schedule during the winter months. In March we can evaluate the experience. ONE OTHER SPECIAL TIME December 19 - Our CHANUKAH DINNER will be Friday, December 19, at 6:00pm with our Shabbat Service to follow at the old time of 7:30pm.
