ASBI NOTICES

November & December Birthday/Anniversary/Special Occasion Kiddush

Saturday, December 3

Honor your friends and loved ones and mark a special occasion, anniversary, birthday, or other life event by participating as a co-sponsor for Kiddush on December 3. Co-sponsorships begin at $100. Please visit asbi.org/payment.php, select “Birthday/Anniversary Kiddush” from the drop-down menu, and leave your message for the bulletin in the notes box.

Adam R. Straus Memorial Mikvah Notice Our beloved Adam R. Straus Memorial Mikvah and Kelim Mikvah are currently closed in the aftermath of a malfunction in the mikvah's filtration system. We have decided to use this opportunity to perform some deferred maintenance. The mikvah pools have been drained, dried, and cleaned. Next, the mikvah will be refilled with rainwater. This entire process will likely take several weeks (dependent, in large part, on the timing and volume of the needed rain itself). We understand that this is a significant inconvenience to many members of our community and we are undertaking this process only because it is needed to preserve the halakhic integrity of the mikvah and its hygiene and safety. The entire community is invited to come to the mikvah for a "behind-the-scenes tour" on Monday, November 21, to see parts of the mikvah infrastructure that are normally hidden and to study some of the halakhic principles that are expressed in our mikvah's construction. The Adam R. Straus Memorial Mikvah has been a crucial asset of our community for a decade. With God's help, and the hard work of the dedicated team of volunteer mikvah attendants and the skilled technicians who work on our mikvah, it will be able to serve our community for decades to come. In the meantime, members of the community are welcome to use the mikvah in West Rogers Park at 3110 W. Touhy (773-274-7425), in Skokie at 4242 W. Dempster (847-568-8710), or by-appointment-only at the Chabad B'nai Reuven Mikvah at 6350 N. Whipple (773-743-4282).

All the best, Sara Wolkenfeld David Wolkenfeld Director, ASBI Mikvah Rabbi, ASBI Congregation

SAVE THE DATE: New Member Dinner Are you to new to Anshe Sholom? We are having a New Member Shabbat Dinner on Friday, December 16. Want more information? Contact [email protected].

ASBI ANNUAL MEETING The annual Anshe Sholom B’nai Israel Congregation general membership meeting will take place on Sunday, December 11, at 10:00 AM. At that time, in addition to the presentation of annual committee reports, Board elections will also take place. Voting will be open to every person who is, at the time of the election, a member in good standing of ASBI Congregation. Copies of the board nomination slate are available in the lobby.

Israel in the Present Tense This Shabbat, November 19

The ASBI Israel Committee introduces a new monthly program, “Israel in the Present Tense,” which will cover topics not usually reported in the news media and other outlets. Join us on November 19 for our first program, on the topic of American-Israel relations under the new President. The speaker

will be Richard Baehr, who is the co-founder and chief political correspondent for the website americanthinker.com. His articles have appeared in publications that include the Wall Street Journal, Investors Business Daily, and the Chicago Tribune. The half hour presentation and Q&A will be in the main sanctuary at 12:30 PM, following Kiddush. Light refreshments will be provided.

Future programs will take place on the last Shabbat of the secular month. Subjects will include: the start-up economy, medical miracles, diplomacy in a time of shifting alliances, the relationship with the

U.S. and diaspora Jewry, the vibrant political process, historical context, and cultural affairs.

Behind the Scenes at the ASBI Mikvah Monday, November 21, 7:45 - 8:15 PM

Take advantage of a rare opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour of our beloved Adam R. Straus Memorial Mikvah. The mikvah has been drained and completely dried as part of a scheduled maintenance. Come see the structures beneath the surface of the mikvah and

learn about this precious communal resource and the mitzvot it enables.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Israel Movie Night “The House of Rothschild” (1934)

This Monday, November 21, 7:00 PM at ASBI

George Arliss plays Nathan Rothschild, the head of a family of celebrated 19th century Jewish bankers. Despite the anti-Semitic efforts of a powerful politico (Boris Karloff), Rothschild moves in the best European social circles. He is ultimately knighted for his services to the English crown, which include the financing of the Duke of Wellington's battle against Napoleon at Waterloo.

Designed in part as an attack against the burgeoning anti-Semitism movement in Hitler's Germany, “House of Rothschild” was ironically exploited by Nazi functionary Joseph Goebbels, who re-dubbed and re-edited the film to serve as anti-Jewish propaganda. The film was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture.

Pizza, pop, popcorn, and chips will be served. Sponsored by the Israel Committee.

Thursday, December 1 7:30 PM • Community Program & Dessert Reception

Temple Sholom 3480 North Lake Shore Drive
