LDP Project Board meeting (24/08/2009):

◦ Board Members indicated a preference for a focus on promoting the economy to recover from recession; and utilising the environment as a driver of the economy.

Economic Appraisal of preferred vision based on Oxford Economics‟ paper “The Strategic Economic Implications of the Recession for Scotland” (Appendix 4)

Page 12: Board Meeting 30 October 2009 - South Ayrshire · South Ayrshire‟s LDP: - 19 votes in favour of the preferred vision (the LDP will be a development strategy that maximises sustainable

◦ Key findings from OE‟s report: -

Economic recession will create short-medium term economic volatility; however Scotland‟s economy remains strong, suggesting long term economic growth remains likely;

Economic growth may not necessarily be focussed on more people and jobs; but on environmental quality;

The increase in „green jobs‟ may facilitate economic growth; and in the longer run, this will be a key component of the economy; and,

Planning policy should align priorities to economic changes so as to capitalise on opportunities

Page 13: Board Meeting 30 October 2009 - South Ayrshire · South Ayrshire‟s LDP: - 19 votes in favour of the preferred vision (the LDP will be a development strategy that maximises sustainable

◦ Key aspects of preferred vision: -

◦ A sustainable economic growth strategy, led by the environment, as an economic asset.

◦ Environmental quality of South Ayrshire is a key economic asset: this will diversify economy, even in short-term; but will also increase the feasibility of longer term economic growth.

◦ Modernised LDP system is more dynamic, more strategic, and will be more readily reviewed and updated to align to economic trends.
