2St Michael & All Angels’ Church, Bodenham Despite the weather, the Easter Services were well attended. We enjoyed singing the Easter hymns and the big Paschal candle was lit. It reminds us that Jesus was called “the light of the world” and it will be lit at all Services until Pentecost (Whit Sunday). After that the Easter Candle will be alight for Baptisms and Funerals. We no longer celebrate May Day in the village as we might once have done, with a May Queen, a Maypole, Morris-dancing and sports but we do have two Bank Holidays this month to spend as we wish.On the first of these, Monday 7th May you might like to join us on the usual Rogationtide Walk around the Benefice. It will start at Sutton St Nicholas Church at 10am, coffee will be at Marden Church at 11am, lunch at Amberley Church at 1pm and tea at Bodenham Church at 4pm. You can join at any stage and do as little or as much as you wish. More details can be found at the back of the church. In past ages there used to be processions going round the parish to “beat the bounds” on Rogation Sunday. Rogation from the Latin word ‘rogare’- means to ask. It is the time, as we plant our crops, to ask for God’s blessing on our fields and gardens. This year in our parish we have celebrated a Diamond Wedding, Golden Weddings and some 90th birthdays. It speaks well for healthy living and longevity in our village! By the time you read this, we shall have had our Annual Parochial Church Meeting. It is a chance for people to find out what is happening in the church, to give their views and make suggestions. Apart from the Church Services, church life and planning events, we are responsible for the care and maintenance of our church and churchyard. Tom James- Moore’s Report is in this Newsletter. People often judge a village by the state of its public buildings, the church, the school, the hall, the shop and the pub. We are custodians of these and want to hand them on to the next generation in good shape. Vivien Moffitt & Tom James-Moore

BODENHAM CHURCH Report of the Fabric & Grounds – March 2018 1. The church grounds are in good condition and are well maintained, though the trees are causing some concern due to the number of branches that have broken off. Sue Hack is going to do a Risk Assessment of the churchyard for which I am grateful. 2. Richard Morgan keeps the lawn mown very well and his fee this year will be £160 per mow. 3. Moles continue to be a problem and I am taking action to control them. 4. Some graves need levelling. I hope the families of the deceased will seek to do all they can. 5. The fabric of the church needs some attention, i.e. the gutters, roof tiles, moss, floors and lighting. 6. My thanks to all the good people who do so much work behind the scenes fund-raising, cleaning, flower arranging, book-keeping, secretarial work and all those other tasks to keep our church in good order. 7. Last but not least my thanks to Vivien Moffitt, Tony Smith and Peter Tomlinson for their support and work in arranging and taking services, attending meetings, opening and shutting the Church daily. It does our wonderful church proud. Tom James-Moore March 2018

The detailed comments made by the Parish Council can be seen on the Herefordshire Council Planning website (www.herefordshire.gov.uk/info/200142/planning_services). The comments made at the Parish Council meeting can be found in the Parish Council minutes on the Parish website www.bodenhamparish.org.uk PlaygroundAt the Siward James Centre on Saturday 14th April two playground suppliers presented their proposals for replacing the playground with a new modern facility. It is possible - but by no means certain - that a new playground may be installed by the end of the summer.Vacancy on the Parish Council (Update)The vacancy on the Parish Council has still not been filled. BODENHAM BOWLING CLUB After a seemingly endless winter and wet spring the outdoor season has begun. The green is in great shape after a thorough autumn / winter / early spring treatment. Mr C Walters and other members have already cut and swept the green in readiness for the opening of the green. Mrs J Fryer, Mrs A Walters, Mrs B Carter and myself have helped sort the pavilion in readiness and ensured that our catering box that comes into use for friendlies is well stocked. Club evenings at 6.00pm for a prompt 6.15 start are underway and we all hope that some warm sunny evenings will help us ensure happy friendly club evenings. The TRIPLES competition is being drawn each club night and the committee hopes this new format will ensure all members having the opportunity to play with different members each week. Friendlies and men’s league details are on the club schedule and also on the village web site. As we play in our 35th season within the grounds of the Siward James and Arkwright Trust we will always welcome new players. We can supply woods if you have none and only ask that you wear smooth soled footwear to protect the green. We are already planning our social event, a Hog Roast and we are delighted to have secured the same company to prepare the hog as last year. This will take place on SUNDAY 12th August 2018 and it is open to members, family, friends and villagers. This has always been a happy village event and more details will be published in next months newsletter. I hope we all have a happy warm summer and even if you do not want to try the game of bowls you will always be welcome to come and watch.Barbara Gibson (01568 797643 call minder)

Marden Branch -Hereford Wildlife Trust We had a great turn out for the first meeting of our new Herefordshire Wildlife Trust Marden local branch in April! Maureen Williams from Hollycroft Hedgehog rescue gave a lovely talk illustrating the care needed by rescued hedgehogs - from tiny hoglets who have lost their mum to adults who have come a cropper. The audience were entranced by pictures of hedgehogs of all sizes and thrilled to meet one of the hedgehogs currently receiving rest and recuperation with Maureen. Maureen’s dedication to her work and care for all her small charges shone through her talk. The next meeting is on Wednesday 2nd May at Marden Hall starting at 7pm. There will be a talk from Mary Walters, a bee keeper ’On the Life of Bees’ followed by refreshments and a small raffle. Francis Weeks from HWT will be present to offer information. Come along and join in the fun! £2 for HWT members and £3 for non members. For more information: phone Mary Mackay on 01432880107.or e-mail Jessica Tidball jessica.tidball@
11 Bodenham ‘Flicks in the Sticks’ questionnaire.
‘Flicks in the Sticks’ is a concept devised by film buffs to enable accessibility to films within rural communities, its aim is for them to be affordable and in a more relaxed environment. Bodenham has been part of this for a number of years and offers good parking, friendly atmosphere, easy disabled access. However it has struggled with attendance in the last couple of years. We would like to keep ‘Flicks’ alive in Bodenham but to do this we need your help, both by supporting the showings and by completing this short survey. Hampton Ward Newsletter: April 2018One of the main duties of a District Councillor, is to deal with questions and complaints from parish councils and local residents regarding the various services and facilities provided by Herefordshire Council. These questions can be many and varied but are generally straightforward (road repairs and planning being the top two) but occasionally something comes up that I’ve not dealt with before and will need a full investigation in order to ensure an accurate answer. However, and by way of a change, I thought it may prove useful if I were to ask you a few questions. Please feel free to keep your replies anonymous, but your answers could prove helpful in deciding how I approach my future duties within the Ward. I’ll pass the results of the questionnaire on to your parish councils in due course. Q1. Are you satisfied with the condition of our road network?Q2. How, in your opinion, did the council (Balfour Beatty) perform during the recent heavy snow falls?Q3. Do you use any of the council’s libraries or leisure facilities? Please list all that apply.Q4. The latest increase in council tax is proving financially difficult for some residents. Do you think the charges are too high?Q5. Are there any council services/facilities you think should be withdrawn in order to save money?Q6. Are there any services/facilities you think should be included to make your life more enjoyable?Q7. Parish councils are now taking responsibility for a number of tasks traditionally carried out by the county council. Do you agree with this policy?Q8. Considering Q7, are there any additional responsibilities your parish council should take on, or even give up?Q9. Do you have any suggestions that would make your life safer and/or more enjoyable?Q10. Have you ever considered standing as a Parish or District Councillor? Please let me know if I can help with any information. Please feel free to send any replies via email or send a text to my mobile [email protected]. 07748 387331

Go Toads! The Go Toads started in 2016 by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust with funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to run toad patrols in Bodenham between February and April to try and prevent them from being run over as they cross the lane from their winter home in woodland to the lake, where they mate and spawn. Each spring toads instinctively follow the migratory routes used by their ancestors, but as the roads become ever busier they find themselves in mortal danger as they make their way to the water. With this peril and the fact that many ponds are being lost from our landscapes through development and because they are now largely redundant as watering ponds for livestock on farms. This has led to a serious national decline in toad numbers: a recent study by Froglife and partners from The University of Zurich and using data collected by Toads on Roads volunteer patrollers has shown that on average common toads have declined by 68% over the last 30 years in the UK. Things are looking up for the toads of Bodenham however as this year’s count of toads was more than double that of previous years with over 1,000 helped across the road. In 2016 we helped 202 toads, last year that rose to 339 and this year the total was 1012. Though this is not enough evidence to draw definite conclusions, it looks like the toad patrols are having a positive effect on toad numbers. The Bodenham toad patrol group began the year with an introductory meeting and training session run by Herefordshire Wildlife Trust’s Sophie Cowling. Sophie commented: “We had a great turn-out for our first meeting but what has been so fantastic is that volunteers have kept coming along throughout the season with more volunteers joining throughout the weeks of patrolling. We’ve had around 25 volunteers helping on some nights and 53 people in total come out on patrols – it’s great to see the local community taking this project to their hearts. Aside from the period of snow, we have had lots of evenings with the perfect conditions for the toads – fairly mild and damp – so we’ve had some bumper nights! This year, the volunteers were also joined by the Marden Navigators who proved very enthusiastic patrollers!” Patrolling has now finished for the year and the volunteers have been rewarded by lots of toads and toad spawn being spotted in the lake. Volunteer Vivien Quinn who has been keeping the tally of toads each evening said: “This has been such a great community project to be involved in. It’s wonderful to get up close to this iconic species. Some people don’t think of toads as charming or characterful but they really are! They all start squeaking when they’re in a bucket together and it feels great when we release them close to the lake at the end of each patrol.” For more information go to www.herefordshirewt.org/bodenhamtoadpatrol
