ABNORMAL SHIFT TO THIRD GEAR (SERVICE CAMPAIGN T32)
IMPORTANT: DEALERS MUST PERFORM THIS CAMPAIGN ON ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES PRIOR TO CUSTOMER RETAIL DELIVERY AND WHENEVER AN AFFECTED VEHICLE IS IN THE SHOP FOR ANY MAINTENANCE OR REPAIR.
IMPORTANT: WHEN A VEHICLE ARRIVES AT THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT, ACCESS HYUNDAI MOTOR AMERICA'S "WARRANTY VEHICLE INFORMATION" SCREEN VIA DCS ON-LINE TO IDENTIFY OPEN CAMPAIGNS.
DESCRIPTION:
An intermittent abnormal shift into 3rd gear may occur while driving some 2007 MY TUCSON (JM) and 2007 MY TIBURON (GK) vehicles equipped with the M5GF1 type manual transaxle.
This bulletin describes the procedure to inspect and/or replace the shift lever linkage with an updated version.
VEHICLES AFFECTED:
Model
TUCSON (JM) -2.0L engine equipped with the M5GF1 manual transaxle
TIBURON (GK) -2.7L engine equipped with the M5GF1 manual transaxle
Affected vehicle production date range:
TUCSON (JM): From August 10, 2006 to October 24, 2006
TIBURON (GK): From August 17, 2006 to October 24, 2006

INSPECTION:
1. Place the shifter lever in the neutral position. Open the hood and remove the air cleaner box (D) to gain access to the shift lever linkage located on the top of the transaxle.

2. Insert a flat head screwdriver between the transaxle case and the shift lever linkage assembly (A) and push the shift lever linkage (B) toward the rear of the vehicle. Remove the screw driver. Measure the gap. The maximum sliding distance should be approximately 2~3mm.

3. Shift the transmission lever into 3rd gear.
4. After shifting into 3rd gear, apply an additional 5~8kgf (11~17 lbs-f) of force to the shift lever without any side to side movement. After the force is applied, pull the shift lever back into the neutral position.
5. Check whether the shift lever moves smoothly between 3rd and neutral. Use the table below for reference.
NORMAL ABNORMAL
When pushing shift lever into 3rd gear.
Shift lever stays in 3rd gearafter removing additional force.
Shift lever does NOT remain in 3rd gear after removing additional force.
When pulling the shift lever into the neutral position.
Shift lever returns smoothly to neutral position.
Shift lever feels stiff in the initial stage.

6. Slide the shift lever linkage assembly inward (towards the front of the vehicle - No Gap) when inspection is complete.
7. If the shift lever is operating under normal movement conditions, no further action is required.
8. If the shift lever is operating under abnormal movement conditions, replace the shift lever with the redesigned part.
SHIFT LEVER LINKAGE REPLACEMENT:
1. Disconnect the negative terminal (C) on the battery and remove the air cleaner assembly (D).

2. Remove the select lever fixing bolt (E) and remove the select lever. Tightening torque: 2.0~2.7kgf-m (14.5~19.5lbf-ft)
2. Remove the shift lever mounting bolt (F) and pin (G) and then remove the shift lever. Tightening torque: 2.0~2.7kgf-m (14.5~19.5lbf-ft)
3. Install the redesigned shift lever linkage and tighten the bolt (F) to the specified torque and re-insert the pin (G).
4. Re-install the select lever and tighten the bolt (E) to the specified torque.
5. Re-install all other removed parts in the reverse order.
