Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver

It was humorist Jerome K. Jerome whomade the following sage observation: "It isimpossible to enjoy idling thoroughly

unless one has plenty of work to do. Thereis no fun in doing nothing when you havenothing to do. Wasting time is merely anoccupation then, and a most exhaustingone. Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet mustbe stolen."

Though it is unconstitutional and there-

fore unenforceable, there is a law on thebooks in Tennessee which prohibitsduelists, preachers and atheists from beingelected to public office.

According to most history books, thefirst shots of the Civil War were fired atFort Sumter, S.C., in April of 1861, butthat's not entirely true. The first shots ofthe war between the North and the Southactually were fired in January of that yearin Pensacola, Fla., where a garrison ofUnion troops was stationed at FortBarrancus. A contingent of Florida andAlabama troops marched on the fort withthe intent to throw out the Yankees in theirmidst. However, the Southerners' dedica-tion to the cause was somewhat lacking; assoon as the Union soldiers fired at them, they beat a hasty retreat.

Those who study such things say thatthe average lightning bolt has a tempera-ture of approximately 50,000 degreesFahrenheit.

Will paper money become obsolete? Is paper currency a dying breed? What about checks and sav-

ings bonds? Many of the currency that has survived throughoutcenturies may eventually go the way of the dinosaur.

There's no denying how daily life has been transformed bytechnology. With the proliferation of e-mail, online shopping, textmessaging, social networking, and the myriad other digitalavenues that fill up a person's day, the concept of writing some-thing on paper -- or paying for something with paper -- may seemarchaic. After all, now you can wirelessly transfer funds from onebank account to another or pay for items with the click of amouse.

Still, the general public has been hard-pressed to give up onpaper money altogether. But other alternatives are chomping atthe bit, and it may not be too long before all money is digitalized,or before the world reverts back to gold, silver or another curren-cy that has actual intrinsic value. Even now, some ATMs in areaslike the United Arab Emirates and in India dispense gold and sil-ver coins, diamonds and even jewelry. Just last year, Mumbaibecame the first city in the world to launch a machine that dis-penses diamonds.

Consumers are increasingly turning to debit and credit cards topay for products in stores and online. The rise of mobile creditcard readers attached to smartphones and tablets has enabledeveryone from small business owners to regular individuals tocollect money by swiping a credit or debit card and having thefunds automatically deposited into an account of choice. Walletsare being redesigned to be more compact for front-pocket usesince many people now carry only cards in their wallets.

Although it once seemed like paper currency would always bearound, such a concept is quickly falling by the wayside. TheUnited States Department of the Treasury announced that paperchecks for Social Security payments would be a thing of the paststarting in 2013. Recipients can have the money deposited elec-tronically in a bank account. For those without accounts, depositscan be loaded on a Direct Express Debit MasterCard to be usedfor purchases just like any other debit/credit card.

Many people already have witnessed the phasing out of gov-ernment tax refund checks. A large number of people file theirincome taxes via the Internet, receiving any refunds electronically.Payroll and other benefits are increasingly becoming digital-onlyas well.

Even paper savings bonds are being reduced. Private-sectoremployees can now join the federal employees who were able toinvest in savings bonds by purchasing them through payrolldeductions.

Removing paper currency in all forms has its share of pros andcons. The U.S. government has said that taxpayers will save about$300 million the first five years after the changeover to digitalsocial security checks. By not having to send out more than 100million checks, the federal government will save millions onpostage and printing costs. Electronic currency also benefits theenvironment.

People may now notice that e-mail purchase receipts have

started to appear with more frequency as well. Major retailers likeSears and K-mart enable shoppers to pick whether they want adigital or paper receipt. Smartphone apps are being created tostore and organize receipts. In England, Peter Perkins, the generalmanager of the Tesbury's grocery chain, has said the store plans tophase out paper receipts by 2020. Electronic receipts and currencyare poised to reduce human error and keep things organized.

A significant concern with regard to electronic currency andreceipts is the likelihood of identity theft, as data breaches occurwith some frequency. In September 2012, some major financialinstitutions, including like Bank of America and PNC Bank, found their Web sites were sporadically inoperable due to a cyberattack that may have been tied to an Islamic terrorist group. Thisisn't the first time a technical terrorist attack has occurred. Thesesituations often open the eyes of people who realize how suscepti-ble personal information can be when only backed by digitalnumbers and codes. It's hard to stash zeros and ones under yourmattress for safe-keeping.

Also, unlike paper money that limits what thieves can take, digital breaches can lead to entire accounts being wiped out if thebreach is not noticed in time. Other personal information, such asspending habits and shopping patterns, may be deduced fromelectronic information stored with accounts, raising questionsabout privacy.

White House is owned bythe National Park Service

Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C.,the White House serves as the official residence for the Presidentof the United States as well as the primary place where he or sheconducts official business. The building was designed by Irish-born architect James Hoban, who was instrumental in creatingmany official buildings after emigrating to the United States. InJune 1792, Hoban was summoned to the temporary U.S. capital inPhiladelphia to compete in a design competition for the WhiteHouse. George Washington, the first President of the UnitedStates, was fond of Hoban after admiring some of his work whiletouring the southern United States. Washington never got achance to live in the White House, however. He is the onlyPresident never to live in the White House, as the building wasnot completed before the end of his second term. Washington'ssuccessor, President John Adams, moved into the residence in1801. Since its inception, the White House has beenchanged afew times. In the building's infancy, it was set ablaze during theWar of 1812 and had to undergo significant reconstruction. It alsowas expanded during Theodore Roosevelt's time in office toinclude a West Wing to house work offices. William Howard Taftadded the first Oval Office. Although an official residence, theWhite House is a National Heritage Site and is owned by theNational Park Service.

Where'sthe beef?By Angela Shelf Medearis

Red meat often has a bad reputation inthe world of nutrition and health. Somepeople have eliminated red meat fromtheir diet. Like most foods, lean cuts ofbeef are a healthy addition to your dietand, in moderation, a good source of pro-tein.

An appropriate portion size is a 3-ounce piece of lean meat, which is aboutthe size of a deck of cards. A lean cut ofbeef is an excellent source of protein, zinc, vitamin B-12, selenium and phosphorus.Even with these benefits, it is important toselect lean cuts that are redder in color, without a lot of marbling. The leanest cutswill have "loin" or "round" in the name.

A 3-ounce serving of lean beef providesat least 20 percent of the Daily Value forthese nutrients per serving. A 3-ounceserving of beef also is a good source ofniacin, vitamin B-6, iron and riboflavin --which means it supplies 10 percent to 19percent of the Daily Value for these nutri-ents per serving.

All of these nutrients play a vital role inthe body. Protein helps build bones, mus-cles, cartilage and skin. It's also a compo-nent of blood, enzymes, hormones andvitamins, and it gives the body energy.Zinc boosts the immune system and pro-motes wound healing. Phosphorus isrequired for the formation of healthy teethand bones. Iron carries oxygen in theblood to the cells and muscles, helping toinhibit fatigue, as well prevent iron-defi-ciency anemia. Vitamin B-12, niacin, vita-min B-6 and riboflavin all aid the body inthe release of energy, help the nervous sys-tem function properly and assist with thesynthesis of red blood cells and tissues.

When using ground beef in a recipe, itshould be at least 90 percent lean. Makebeef cuts even healthier by removing anyexcess fat, and prepare it using cooking

methods like baking, grilling or broiling.Be sure to include a variety of proteinfoods in your diet in addition to beef, likefish, poultry and nuts. As with all foods, remember to eat beef in moderation.

Simple ways you can save energyReducing energy usage is a good way

to help the environment and save moneyalong the way. Saving energy can be donein a variety of ways, many of which donot require significant effort can lead tosignificant savings.

•Stop using the dishwasher to dry thedishes. A dishwasher is a modern conven-ience few people feel they can live with-out. While you don't need to give up thedishwasher entirely to save money, it'simportant to note that many dishwashersuse more energy to dry the dishes than towash them. If your dishwasher does notautomatically dry the dishes, turn theknob to the off position once the disheshave been cleaned and open the door toallow the dishes to air dry.

•Go with a more traditional refrigera-

tor-freezer combination. Side-by-siderefrigerator and freezer may be combina-tions may be more fashionable, but suchunits can use as much as 20 percent moreenergy than their traditional counterparts. If you must purchase a side-by-side unit,be sure to buy only those with an EnergyStar label.

•Do laundry less frequently. Whetheryou live in an apartment or a home, hav-ing an in-unit washer and dryer is a greatconvenience. But frequently doing smallloads can be wasteful, as it takes roughlythe same amount of energy to clean asmall load of laundry as it does a fullload. Limit yourself to only full loads oflaundry as much as possible.

•Do your drying all at once. Whenusing the dryer, try to dry one batch of

clothes right after another. Many dryersrequire a significant amount of energy toheat up, but drying consecutive loadswon't require as much energy to get thedryer up to operating temperature as thedryer will need if you allow a significantamount of time to pass between loads.

•Don't go to extreme temperatures.Arriving home to a house that's especiallycold or warm inspires many people toturn their thermostats way up or down inan effort to heat or a cool the home morequickly. This forces the unit to work hard-er and use more energy. Instead of takingsuch an extreme approach, invest in aheating or cooling system that allows youto set the temperature in advance so thetemperature inside your home is pleasantwhen you walk through the door.

Conserving water can be done in a variety of ways, many ofwhich won't require much effort at all. The following are ahandful of ways men and women can conserve water to benefitthe environment.

•Upgrade your home's water features. According to theEnvironmental Protection Agency, toilets, showers and faucetsaccount for two-thirds of all indoor water use. If you haven'tupgraded these items in recent years, chances are they're notvery eco-friendly. In the past, toilets used between 3.5 to 5 gal-lons of water per flush. But today's low-flush toilets use 1.6 gal-lons of water or less per flush, significantly reducing the averagehome's water consumption.

Older showerheads may also be unnecessarily wasting water.EPA estimates suggest that showers account for roughly 20 per-cent of total indoor water use. Older showerheads typically con-sume about 4.5 gallons of water per minute, while newer, low-flow showerheads consume just 2.5 gallons of water per minute.Such showerheads are inexpensive and can drastically reduceyour monthly water consumption, helping the environmentwhile saving you money.

•Change your landscaping practices. Homeowners with agreen thumb can employ a more eco-friendly approach to tend-ing to their lawns and gardens without sacrificing aestheticappeal. One way to do so is by watering in the early morninghours or during the evening, especially during the hot summermonths. Doing so means less water will be lost to evaporation,

which means you won't have to over-water to make up for thewater lost to evaporation that's common when a lawn or gardenis watered during the hot and humid daylight hours.

How often you cut the grass can also contribute to excessivewater consumption. Allowing the grass to grow taller will pro-vide more shade for the lawn's roots. This makes for strongerroots and more water retention in the soil, which translates toless watering.

Another way to conserve water when landscaping to strategi-cally locate plants based on their water needs. Group plants withsimilar water needs next to one another and, if planting a gardenfor the first time, look for plants that do not need lots of water tosurvive. This is especially important for those people who livein regions where temperatures are particularly high during thespring and summer.

•Become more conscious of your water consumption andusage. One of the easiest ways to conserve water is to becomemore conscious of the various ways in which you waste wateron a daily basis. Nearly everyone wastes water, be it running thedishwasher when it's not full or using a washing machine with-out a variable load control or letting the faucet run continuouslywhile brushing your teeth.

Conserving water is essential to protecting the environment.Adhering to a few simple and efficient strategies is all it takes toreduce your daily water consumption, do your part to protect theenvironment and maybe even save a little money along the way.

Conserve water and benefit the environment

Getting ready for tax seasonA new year not only brings a host of

new opportunities, but it also brings a hostof familiar obligations. One such obliga-tion is paying taxes, which doesn't have tobe done until mid-April. But waiting untilthe last minute with respect to taxes canmake the process even more difficult.

Getting a headstart on tax season can bebeneficial in numerous ways, not the leastof which is avoiding the last-minute rushto file your return come the filing deadline.Even if you have yet to receive your W-2,there are steps you can take to get readyfor the coming tax season.

•Gather your documents. Your W-2 islikely not the only document you will needto prepare your tax return. Statementsregarding your investments, student loanpayments, mortgage and a host of otherdocuments might be necessary for you tofill out your return. You should startreceiving these documents in January, sogather them as they come in and keepthem in a convenient place.

•Examine past returns. Many peoplehave questions when filling out their taxreturns, but those who wait until the wan-ing days of tax season to prepare theirreturns ignore those questions in an effortto make the filing deadline. When you

start preparing for tax season early, exam-ine past returns and see if there are anyquestions you wanted to ask in the pastthat you didn't have time for. Write thesequestions down as you comb through yourpast returns and bring the questions toyour tax preparer when the time comes. Ifyou don't plan on hiring a professional toprepare your taxes, you can contact theIRS with your questions.

•Take your time. When you decide toget an early start on your taxes, you allowyourself to take your time preparing yourreturn. This reduces the likelihood of get-ting stressed when filing your return.

•Consider hiring a professional.Starting early also gives you an opportuni-ty to determine if preparing your ownreturn is too tall a task. If that's the case, consider hiring a professional to prepareyour return. If you decide to hire a profes-sional, do so early so that person has moretime to devote to your return. If you waittoo long, chances are the tax preparer willbe buried with many other customers'returns and won't be able to devote asmuch time to preparing your return as youwould like.

More information about getting readyfor tax season is available at www.irs.gov.

Time ToWINTERIZE!

Publish your own night-night bookBy Donna Erickson

Make a family reading resolution thisyear, and kick it off with a brand-newbook you publish with the youngest bud-ding reader in your family. To get youstarted, here are some ideas for your firstbook, titled "Night Night Book." Not onlywill your child have a one-of-a-kind bookto enjoy, but also it has the added benefitof making the bedtime ritual extra fun!

Each page represents something in yourchildren's world they're familiar with, something they see or use each day. Asyou read it over and over, new stories willemerge, giving a boost to language devel-opment and a love for books and reading.

Here's What You'll Need: Posterboard or sturdy paper; Magazine picturesand photographs of people, places and petsfamiliar to your child (you might wish touse color copies of photos for this book);Small, flat items (or simple drawings ofitems) familiar to child; Scissors; Glue;

MarkersHere's the fun: Collect photographs

and magazine pictures as well as itemsfamiliar to your child such as paper labelsfrom food products. Cut poster board into8-inch-by-8-inch pages. Make as manypages as you wish.

On the cover, glue a photo of your childand write the words "Night Night," andyour child's name (for example "NightNight, Adam").

Glue a picture or object to each pageand print the name of it below, after thewords "night night." For example, "nightnight shoes," "night night blankie." Thefinal page of the book could be a poem.

Bind the book by punching two or threeholes along the left side of the pages andattaching the sheets together with safe, plastic, toddler links or metal rings.
