New online banking dangers
Try some of these handy tips
By David UffingtonIt's been trickling out in the news:
International thieves have been siphoningmillions of dollars out of bank accountsall over the world using methods thathaven't been seen before.
What's different this time? First, thethefts are automated by a highly sophisti-cated process, and viruses are able to getaround typical online security measures.Second, these thefts appear to be beyondthe ability of banks' security systems tohandle.
Now, more than ever, it's important tobe cautious when you do your bankingonline.
If you don't bank online, and neverhave, don't start now. If you open anaccount or your bank wants to updateyour information and it asks for an emailaddress, say that you don't have one. Thatway you won't expect to ever get emailfrom the bank. If email does show up, itwill be from a scammer who is hopingyou'll type in your personal information.
If you have been routinely checkingyour balances online or doing any onlinebanking, take extra precautions now. Ifanything at all looks different on thescreen (even if it has an explanation, suchas "We have a new look!"), do not click
any icons or type in any information. Ifyou receive an email from your bank thatincludes a link, do not click. It might be aphishing email designed to intercept yourinformation as you type it in. Your moneycan be transferred out while you're sittingat the computer, with you none the wiser. If it's necessary to access your account, type in the URL you usually use.
Be careful where you wander on theInternet. Many sites are compromised andwill automatically download a virus intoyour computer. Set your virus software toautomatically update. If you have Java orAdobe Reader, keep them updated aswell.
Visit the website of your virus-soft-ware manufacturer. In the past you'velikely only gone to the site to get answersto problems, or to upgrade your software. Now you need to read the latest newsabout the online thefts and learn as muchas you can about how to protect yourself.
David Uffington regrets that he cannot per-sonally answer reader questions, but willincorporate them into his column wheneverpossible. Write to him in care of KingFeatures Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475,Orlando, FL 32853-6475, or send email [email protected].

By JoAnn DersonWhen traveling this summer, bring a
chip clip or other hinged clip with you.You can use it to keep the curtains closedin your hotel room.
If you have an empty non-aerosol hair-spray bottle, you can add some rubbingalcohol to it for cleaning purposes. Youalso can spray your hands, using it like ahand sanitizer.
When you need to rescrew somethingand find the hole is stripped out, sharpena pencil to a point, stick it in the hole and
snap the end off. You'll have new wood toscrew into.Want beachy highlights? Dothem the old-fashioned way. Get lemon orlime juice, splash it on your hands andrun your hands over your hair. If you'reout in the sun, those areas will lighten.
Line your vegetable bin with cleannewspaper to keep moisture down. .

Establish a home fire safety planIt may just save your family’s lives
People rely on fire and smoke detectors to help keep themsafe in their homes. Though fire and smoke alarms are effec-tive, a firm fire safety plan that will keep everyone calm shoulda fire occur could make the difference between life and death.
The U.S. Fire Administration says that more than 3,500Americans die each year in fires, while roughly 18,300 more men, women and children are injuredeach year. Cooking accounts forthe greatest percentage of residen-tial fires, followed by arson. Dryervent fires are also a big concern.FEMA says that smoke, rather thanthe fire's flames, is responsible for75 percent of all deaths by fire.
In addition to physical injuryand material damage, fires cancause a host of problems.Psychological distress, monetarydamages and loss of pets maycome with fires. Loss of irreplace-able personal items is also a con-cern. Although fires can be devas-tating, they're also highly preventa-ble, and smoke alarms and a homefire safety plan are two precaution-ary measures everyone shouldtake.
Creating an evacuation plandoesn't have to be complicated.Such a plan can be established in a few minutes and then rein-forced through practice every so often to keep everyone freshon what to do.
•Begin by assessing the layout of the home. Figure out thetwo best exits from the home.
•If your home doesn't have two doors, invest in a fire ladderso that one of the windows can be a point of exit.
•Know how to gain access to the exits, including the bestpath to take to avoid injury. It's a good idea to consider a fewdifferent scenarios. A kitchen adjacent to the upstairs staircasemay become engulfed in flames and make exit by way of stair-case impossible. Just because you have doors to the outsidedoesn't mean they'll present the best type of exit.
•Sketch out the layout of the home and the escape plan.
Smoke can make it difficult to know up from down. Be sureeveryone can reach the exits even if vision is obstructed. Try itwith your eyes closed.
•Check fire alarms routinely, and change batteries at leastevery year.
•Make sure windowscan be easily opened ifthey are an exit point.
•Make note of whowill be helping children orthe elderly out of thehome.
•Establish a placewhere the family willmeet outdoors. This areashould be far enoughaway from the home sothat everyone will be safefrom smoke, flames andfalling debris. Fires mayignite fuel explosions, sobe sure the meeting spot isa good deal away.
•Children should beinstructed to run to themeeting spot immediatelywithout waiting behind foranyone to catch up. Noone should reenter thehome after arriving at the
meeting spot.•Do a few practice runs so that everyone will be accustomed
to getting out quickly.•While in most cases it is better to escape and let the fire
department extinguish a fire, in the event of a small fire, occu-pants may be able to stanch it with a personal fire extinguisher.Follow the acronym PASS to properly put out the fire.
- PULL the pin in the extinguisher.- AIM the nozzle or hose at the base of the flames.- SQUEEZE the trigger.- SWEEP the foam across the fire base; do not just aim in
one place.Fire safety is very important. In conjunction with smoke
alarms, a fire safety plan can help everyone get out alive.
Keeping family members safe from fire involvesestablishing a fire safety plan.

HOCUS - FOCUS
Tiny insects can packa very powerful punch
Insects have long been a nuisance atoutdoor gatherings. A barbecue, picnic oreven a visit to the park can quickly growuncomfortable when insects buzz andbite. It may take minutes to hours beforeyou see the telltale signs of an insect bite, including welts and redness. You may beleft wondering what flew in under theradar. It could be no-see-ums.
Many of the insect bites you willreceive come from visible mosquitoes ofdifferent varieties. They're attracted tosweat or exhaled breath. Females whoneed a blood meal to produce eggs usepeople and other animals as their sourceof nourishment. Although mosquitoes canbe problematic, very small insects, aptlydubbed "no-see-ums," could pack a morepowerful bite. Oftentimes, people areunaware they've been victimized by a no-see-um until their skin has already grownirritated.
No-see-um is actually an umbrellaterm given to very small biting insects, namely biting midges and sand flies. These insects are part of the order Dipteraand families Ceratopogonidae andPhlebotomidae, respectively. Althoughsand flies and biting midges are not thesame insect, their small stature and simi-lar likeness for feeding on blood haveinadvertently grouped them together. No-see-ums are also called punkies, mostnotably the sand fly variety. Punkies maycarry disease and viruses.
No-see-ums are commonly foundalong seashores, rivers and lakes. Theyare attracted by similar markers as mos-quitoes, including octenol, which is foundin human breath. Traps containing octenolliquid can be used to attract and kill no-see-ums, and many bug repellents canhelp keep these bugs away from the skin.
Adult biting midges are usually mostactive between dawn and dusk; they willremain inactive through very windyweather, finding shelter amongst vegeta-tion. They usually stick close to theirbreeding sites. Many no-see-ums attack inlarge numbers, biting on any areas ofexposed skin, most notably the face,
scalp, hands and legs. The bites can causeacute discomfort, irritation and severelocal reactions, according to theDepartment of Medical Entomology inWentworthville, NSW, Australia. Bitesmay cause swelling and extreme itching.Sensitive individuals may experiencesymptoms for several days to weeks.
Although there is no exact method tocontrolling no-see-ums, they do lay theireggs and breed larvae in standing water, much like mosquitoes. So keep stagnantwater clear of your property. You can alsoavoid going outside at dawn or dusk. Ifyou must go outside, wear repellent orlong sleeves and pants. Individuals whoexperience severe reactions to midgebites should keep an antihistamine prod-uct, such as Benadryl, on hand for aller-gic reactions. In addition, keep a topicalanti-ich cream, like Cortizone, around tobe safe.
Keep bugs away Biting flies, mosquitoes, gnats, bees,
and beetles can make outdoor excursionsunenjoyable. People often rely on insectrepellents to keep bugs away. Thoughthere are many repellents on the market, only a few of them may be consideredsafe. Repellants, such as those that con-tain DEET, may prove more hazardous tohuman health than the insects themselves- even if a person has been bitten. Torepel insects safely, experiment with thesedifferent methods.
•Aloe vera, lavender, peppermint, andclove are known to repel mosquitoes.
•Grow herbs and flowers like garlic, rosemary, tansy, catmint, basil, pennyroy-al, and marigolds. These plants naturallyrepel many bugs.
•Avoid lotions or perfumes with a flo-ral scent, which attract bugs.
•Remove standing water around thehouse where pests may gravitate to andlay eggs.
•Citronella candles and sprays maywork for a few hours in relatively smallareas.

Cataracts are a primaryconcern for those over 40
As men and women age, they can expe-rience certain physical changes and healthchallenges. Vision impairment is one con-dition that many associate with aging, andcataracts are a primary concern for thoseof middle-age and older.
Today, more than 22 million Americansage 40 and older have cataracts. Accordingto the National Eye Institute, by age 80,more than half of all Americans will eitherhave a cataract or have had cataract sur-gery.
Cataract is clouding of the eye's lensthat blocks or changes the passage of lightinto the eye. Normally the lens is clear, which allows light to pass through to theback of the eye, so that a person can seewell-defined images. If a cataract formsand the lens becomes covered in anopaque film, light cannot pass through eas-ily. The result will be fuzzy vision, almostlike looking through a fogged-up window. If cataracts are not treated, an individualmay eventually lose most of his or hervision.
One or both eyes can be affected bycataracts. In the case of both eyes beingcompromised, one eye is usually worsethan the other.
The primary risk factor for developingcataracts is age. The older a person is, thegreater their risk. However, there are sev-eral other risk factors as well.
•Intense heat or long-term exposure toUV rays from the sun
•Certain diseases, such as diabetes•Obesity•High blood pressure•Inflammation in the eye•Hereditary influences•Long-term steroid use•Eye injuries•Other eye diseases•SmokingPrevent Blindness America provides
free information to the public on every-thing from cataract basics to tips on whatto expect from cataract surgery. Visit pre-ventblindness.org/cataract or call its tollfree number at (800) 331-2020. And, aspart of its new Healthy Eyes EducationalSeries, PBA offers a specific online mod-ule on cataracts, including a Power Pointpresentation and guide. The organizationshares this information about cataracts:
•Early symptoms of a cataract mayinclude cloudy or blurry vision.
•Lights may cause a glare, seem toodim or seem too bright.
•Sufferers may also find it difficult toread or drive, especially at night.
•Individuals may have to change theireyeglass prescriptions often.
There are no medications or other treat-ment options besides surgery to correctcataracts. In the United States, cataract sur-gery has a 95 percent success rate, andpatients often have 20/20 or 20/40 visionpost-surgery. Cataract surgery is also themost frequently performed surgery, oftenperformed as an outpatient procedure.
In Canada, where, according toStatistics Canada, seniors will make up 21percent of the population by 2026, cataractsurgery is also frequent and well tolerated.Approximately 250,000 cataract surgeriestake place in Canada each year, accordingto The National Coalition for VisionHealth.
It is widely recommended to get regulareye exams to check for cataracts early on.
"By getting a complete, dilated eyeexam, your doctor can discuss with youthe best strategy to protect your visionwell into the future," said Hugh R. Parry, president and CEO of Prevent BlindnessAmerica. "We encourage everyone, espe-cially those ages 40 and older, to maketheir vision a priority by scheduling an eyeappointment today."

A sandwich of choiceIt is hard to tell just when panini
became a household name, but over thelast several years these beloved sand-wiches have been growing in popularity.Today panini are on the menus of a vari-ety of eateries and restaurants. Dinerscan't seem to get enough of these toastyand tasty sandwiches.
The term "panini" can be traced backto a 16th century Italian cookbook. However, the first instance of it beingused in North America was in 1956.
Depending on what you read or towhom you speak, panini started out as abread sandwich with only one filling. Itwas unlikely the sandwich was grilledand it was typically made on the go. Theword "panino" is Italian for small breadroll. "Panini" is the plural form of theword. This is the diminutive form of theword "pane," which means "bread."
Panini are commonly made from cia-batta or rosetta rolls, although differentrestaurants put their own spins on thesandwich. Though Brits, Americans andCanadians think of panini as a pressedand toasted sandwich, panini actuallymay be any sandwiches on a roll.
Popular Italian fillings in a panino aresalami, mortadella, porchetta, prosciutto, and various cheeses. However, less ethnicforms of the sandwich have showcasedjust about every type of filling.Restaurants may offer roast beef, breadedcutlets, cheese blends, or even vegetarianoptions, dubbed "vegini."
Individuals no longer have to ventureto restaurants or Italian sandwich bars, known as "paninotecas," to fulfill theirpanini fix. Cookware manufacturers haverecognized the increased interest ingrilled, flat sandwiches and have devel-oped panini makers at many differentprice points. Electric models are all-in-one contraptions that look similar to arectangular waffle iron. There are alsocast-iron pans that enable home chefs tocreate a pressed sandwich right on thestovetop. Those who do not have specificpanini-making equipment have beenknown to weigh down a pan on top ofanother with a brick to create the flat-
tened sandwich effect.Whichever method of cooking is used,
the enjoyment of panini lies in coming upwith ingredients to use in the sandwich. For those ready to put their panini makersto good use, try this easy, light, healthyand delicious take on a panino below.

By Angela Shelf MedearisFrom time to time, I like to make a
"grown folks" version of my childhoodfavorites. This macaroni and cheese takesthe kid-pleasing side dish to a new levelof adulthood. To make this classic into amain-course, vegetarian meal, I've addedtofu for a boost of protein. Tofu alsoabsorbs the flavors of the cheeses andenhances the creamy texture of the dish.Serve this with a spinach salad and somewhole-wheat rolls, and you've got a mealthat is sure to please everyone in the fam-ily!
Main CourseMac & Cheese
2 cups (8 ounces) whole-wheatelbow noodles
1 3/4 cups low-fat evaporated milk 3 tablespoons all-purpose flour1/2 tablespoon poultry seasoning1/4 teaspoon salt1 teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper3/4 cup shredded low-fat extra-
sharp cheddar cheese1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese1 teaspoon Dijon mustard8 ounces soft silken tofu, drained,
cut into dice-sized cubesCooking oil spray1 cup whole-wheat Panko bread-
crumbs1 tablespoon whipped butter1 tablespoon paprika1. In a large pot of salted boiling
water, cook the pasta for 6 to 7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the pasta is aldente. Drain and set aside.
2. In a small saucepan, heat 1 1/2 cupsof the evaporated milk on medium-highheat until just simmering. In a smallbowl, whisk the remaining 1/4 cup milk, flour, poultry seasoning, salt and blackand cayenne pepper until combined. Addflour mixture to the simmering milk, whisking constantly for 2 to 3 minutes,
untilsauce is smooth. Remove the pan fromheat and whisk in the cheddar, 1/4 cupparmesan and mustard until the cheese ismelted. Add in tofu cubes. It will makethe mixture lumpy, but will combinewhen baked.
3. Pre-heat oven to 375 F. Spray a 9 by11-inch pan with cooking oil spray. Addpasta to the cheese sauce. Pour mixtureinto prepared pan. Sprinkle with bread-crumbs and remaining 1/4 cup Parmesancheese. Dot with butter and sprinkle withpaprika. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes, untilthe sauce bubbles around the edges.Serve immediately. Makes 6 servings.

Strange, but trueBy Samantha Weaver
It was double Nobel Prize-winningchemist and peace activist Linus Paulingwho made the following sage observation:
"The best way to have a good idea is tohave lots of ideas."
The acre as a unit of measurement hasbeen with us for quite some time.Originally, an acre was considered to bethe amount of land that could be tilled in asingle day by one man behind one ox.
If you've seen the movie "The Wizardof Oz," you might remember that in theEmerald City, the horses were a variety ofbright colors. No special effects there --the set designers simply rubbed the ani-mals with Jell-O powder to achieve thebright hues. Those scenes had to be shotvery quickly, though, since the horses hada tendency to lick off their colors.
If you spent some part of the 1980s try-ing to puzzle out a solution to a Rubik'sCube, you may be surprised to learn thatthe world record, held by FrenchmanEdouard Chambon, is just 9.18 seconds. And it was set in 2008.
You may not have learned about it inschool, but during the summer and earlyautumn of 1859, the United States and theBritish became involved in a conflictknown as The Pig War. In June of thatyear, a pig on American soil was shot by aBritish infantryman in Canada. In responseto the provocation, the American militiacamped out on the border for four months, until the British finally apologized. Nolives were lost (other than the pig's).

Commonchildren'seye injuries
The active lives that children leadoften lead to a few bumps and bruisesalong the way. While a few bandages andantiseptic creams are par for the coursewhen caring for a child, parents worryabout more significant injuries, includingeye injuries.
According to the Boston Children'sHospital, any injury to your child's eyeshould be considered a medical emer-gency. Unlike the heart, lungs and brain, there is not much natural protection forthe eye beyond a thin eyelid. This makesit easy to suffer an eye injury, especiallyfor kids who play sports.
The American Academy ofOphthalmology says that eye injuries area significant health problem in the UnitedStates, second only to cataracts as a causeof visual impairment. Each year, morethan 2.5 million eye injuries occur, and50,000 people permanently lose part orall of their vision. Nearly half (47.6 per-cent) of all reported eye injuries occur inpeople between the ages of 18 and 45.Children ages 0 to 18 experience roughly25 percent of those injuries.
Projectiles and flying debris accountfor the vast majority of eye injuriesacross all age groups. Among children, some of the more common injuries occurwhen children are participating in varioussports, including:
•hockey•archery•darts•BB guns•bicycling•sports that involve rackets•baseball•boxing•basketballToys, fingernails and even chemicals
are responsible for some eye injuries inchildren. It is important to note that 90percent of all eye injuries can be prevent-ed by using protective eyewear. Somesports organizations mandate that childrenuse protective eyewear. But even if it isn'tmandatory, parents should urge childrento wear safety goggles.
Common Eye InjuriesCertain injuries to the eye are more
common than others. Here is a look at thevarious types of injuries that can occur.
Chemical burns: This is when a childgets any type of chemical into the eye.Chemicals may be household cleaningobjects. These injuries require immediatemedical attention because they can causepermanent vision loss.
Bruising: Black eyes or ecchymosisoccurs from some sort of trauma to theeye. The tissue around the eye becomesbruised, but usually the eye itself isspared. However, only a doctor can deter-mine if the eye is unscathed.
Corneal abrasions: The cornea is the
clear, dome-shaped covering at the frontof the eye. A foreign item entering theeye, like sand or debris, may scratch thecornea. It also can become scratched by afingernail or an insect that flies into theeye. A doctor can determine the severityof the abrasion and if any treatment isrequired.
Hyphema: This is a condition ofblood in the anterior chamber of the eyewhere fluid normally flows in and out tonourish eye tissues. Hyphema is causedby an injury, and blood can be seen in theeyeball. It requires prompt medical atten-tion.
Eyelid lacerations: This is a cut onthe eyelid. An eyelid laceration may bepaired with bruising or even corneal abra-sion, depending on what struck the eye.
Fractures: The orbit is the bony areaaround the eyeball, and an orbital fractureis when the bones around the eye are bro-ken. This may cause severe eye damagedepending on where the eye was struck. Itdefinitely requires immediate medical
assistance,and facialreconstruc-tion may benecessary.
Burns:Sunburnnot onlyoccurs tothe skin but can affect the eyes, too. It isimportant to wear UV-protective sun-glasses outside.
Prevent Eye InjuriesEye injuries are largely preventable.
Wearing eyewear during sports is essen-tial. Frequent washing of hands andavoiding touching the eyes can preventthe transfer of debris from fingers to theeye. All chemical products should be keptout of reach. If children use cosmeticproducts, they should not be appliedaround the eye.
Knowing the risks to the eye and howto prevent injury can help ward off seri-ous injuries.

Did you know? The use of renewableenergy sources is on the rise. According to the U.S. EnergyInformation Administration, the world consumed 504.7quadrillion Btu of energy in 2008 (the most recent year forwhich statistics are available). Ten percent of that consump-tion was from renewable energy sources, including biofuels, biomass, wind, and solar energy. By 2035, the EIA forecaststhat consumption of renewable energy will account for rough-ly 14 percent of the total world energy consumption. Worldelectricity generation from renewable fuels also figures to beon the rise. In 2008, electricity generation from renewablefuels accounted for nearly 19 percent of the world's total elec-tricity generation, a figure the EIA estimates will be nearly 23percent by 2035.

Buy organic foods in budgetProduced without the use of chemical
fertilizers, organic foods are all the rage.Because they are grown on smaller farmsand require careful supervision, organicfoods often cost more than their conven-tionally grown counterparts. If not care-ful, consumers can spend way more thanthey anticipated when shopping fororganic foods. Fortunately, there areways to go organic without breaking thebank. Here are some tips.
Shop around.Don't stick to just one source for
organic foods. In addition to shopping atgrocery stores, health food stores andfarmers' markets, you may also want tocheck into purchasing a community-sup-ported agriculture subscription or joininga food co-op or buying club. With theformer, you will receive a weekly box oforganic foods from a local farm inexchange for paying part of their expens-es. With the latter options, you will beable to buy organic foods at a discount. You may even get further discounts inexchange for volunteer work with a foodco-op.
Buy locally in season. When shopping for organic foods,
look for products that have been grownlocally and are in season. There will belittle in the way of shipping costs forthese products, so you will get them at acheaper price. The food with also tastebetter since it is in season and has beenexposed to less pollution fumes duringtransport.
Buy in bulk. Many places offer organic foods in
bulk. Depending upon where you go, youcan buy in bulk loose or packaged. If youdon't have room to store bulk foods orwon't use them before they spoil, consid-er freezing them or splitting the purchasewith a friend.
Use cheaper staples. When possible, build your meals
around lower-cost organic foods, likebeans, rice and other grains. Instead ofserving organic meat every night, whichcan be quite costly, try dishing up a mealor two made with beans.
Make your own.Find recipes for making products that
will cost more as organic. Make yourown bread rather than buying a loaf oforganic bread. It will taste great and saveyou some bucks.
Clip coupons.Leave no stone unturned when look-
ing for organic food coupons, Checknewspapers, magazines, flyers and ofcourse, the Internet. Do a search forcoupons for organic foods and checkwith retailers to make sure they willaccept online coupons. Some won't.Don't forget to look inside organic foodpackages and clip any coupons you findthere.
Grow your own. Many people, even those without
green thumbs, can grow their own organ-ic foods. All it takes is a little know-how.When selecting what foods to grow, keepin mind that some conventionally grownproduce contains more pesticide residuethan others, so try to focus on those. The12 types of organic produce that expertsrecommend include apples, bell peppers, celery, cherries, grapes, nectarines, peaches, pears, potatoes, red raspberries, spinach and strawberries. If you haveneighbors who grow their own organicfoods, consider setting up a neighbor-hood exchange. Each person can bringtheir extras, like peppers and spinach, and trade them for something they don'tgrow, like potatoes.
These are just some of the ways inwhich you can keep the costs of organicfoods down. Learning how to shop eco-nomically for organic foods takes prac-tice. Don't be alarmed if it takes you awhile to get a feel for it.

There are 200 to 400 different breeds of dogsThe American Kennel Club officially
recognizes 150 dog breeds, but if you takeinto account all the unrecognized andmixed breeds, there are anywhere from200 to 400 breeds of dogs. With that manydifferent breeds, there is bound to be abreed out there that appeals to even themost discriminating dog lover. Let's take alook at the history of a few.
The roots of the Great Dane can betraced back to the Egyptians. Drawings ofdogs resembling Great Danes have beenfound on the walls of Egyptian monu-ments dating back to 3,000 B.C. Early ver-sions of the Great Dane were called "BoarHounds" because of the prey they caught.A gentleman named Buffon gave the breedthe name we know it by today. Buffon wastraveling through Denmark when he saw aslimmer variety of the Boar Hound (whichlooked similar to a Greyhound) and com-mented on the fact that the Danish climatehad caused the breed to become a "GrandDanois." After that, the dogs becameknown as the Great Danish Dogs, withheavier versions called "Danish Mastiffs."
It is the Germans who are given creditfor developing the breed as we know ittoday. German nobles imported EnglishBoar Hounds until the 17th and 18th cen-turies, when they had enough breedingstock. In 1880, a meeting was held inBerlin where breeders and judges agreedthe breed developed by the Germans wasdifferent from the English Mastiffs andcould be called the "Deutsche Dog" or"German Dog." The Germans had troubleconvincing others to use the name, howev-er. To this day, the Italians call the breed"Alano" or "Mastiff," while most English-speaking countries call the breed "GreatDane." The Great Dane's regal appearance, strength and spirit give the breed a majestypossessed by few.
The roots of the Basenji can be tracedback to the Egyptians. A Basenji-like dogcan be seen in a bas-relief dating back to4,000 B.C. and even the god Anubis hadBasenji-like ears. There is even aBabylonian statue depicting a man and aBasenji-like dog in the MetropolitanMuseum of Arts. When the ancientempires disappeared, so did the Basenji. It
wasn't until 1682 that a glimpse of thebreed was caught in the Congo. In the lat-ter part of the 19th century, Basenjis werediscovered in the headwaters of the Nileand the Congo, their original habitat. There, they were used as hunting dogs andgiven rights equal to those of their mas-ters.
The first attempts to import Basenjis toEngland failed because they had no immu-nity to distemper. In 1937, after the firstpair was successfully imported to England, they created such a stir that special guardshad to be posted to keep the crowds mov-ing past their cages. In 1943, they wererecognized in the United States as a pure-bred. Basenjis are highly intelligent, play-ful, independent, clean and affectionatedogs that make for lovable companions.
The Chihuahua got its name from thenorthern part of Mexico of the same namethat borders Texas, Arizona and NewMexico. The exact history of theChihuahua is not known. However, thereis a great deal of speculation as to its ori-gins. The breed could have originated as aresult of the breeding of dogs brought bythe Spanish and those of the native Aztecs.Another theory is that the breed originatedon Malta. There, a breed existed that had anatural molera, a soft spot on top of theskull where the three sections of the skullbone meet. The Chihuahua is one of thefew breeds today that has this characteris-tic.
When first introduced to the UnitedStates, Chihuahuas were called "Texas" or"Arizona" dogs. Since the 1950s, breedershave worked to improve the breed's tem-perament and type. There are two varietiesof the Chihuahua, the long and the smoothcoat. Known as the world's smallest breed, the Chihuahua is a lively dog that has anattitude bigger than its size.
For the dog lover, there can never besuch a thing as too many breeds. From thetallest to the smallest, dogs have quite ahistory. According to Will Rogers, "Noman can be condemned for owning a dog.As long as he has a dog he has a friend;and the poorer he gets, the better friend heis." For the dog lovers out there, that is sotrue.
Is your cat old?A cat is considered middle aged
between the ages of eight and 12. This iswhen experts recommend paying extraattention to how you care for your cat.Veterinarians are split as to whether a sen-ior is age 12 or 15, so to play it safe, startwatching for behavioral changes aroundage 12.
Some of the signs that your cat is get-ting older include:
•Eating more food than usual but notgaining any weight.
•Drinking more water than usual ordrinking more frequently.
•Having difficulty chewing, eating lessbecause they can't hold food in theirmouth very well or having bleeding gums, loose teeth and bad breath. Cleaning yourcat's teeth and gums on a regular basis willhelp prevent these problems.
•Sleeping more. It is normal for oldercats to sleep 18 hours day.
•Signs of constipation.•Frequent colds, infections or general
illnesses. Some of the symptoms mentioned
above could be caused by:•Kidney disease. This will cause
increased thirst, decreased appetite andweight loss.
•Hyperthroidism. This will causeweight loss but no change in the cat'sappetite. Cats will also drink more andexperience a change in behavior.
•Arthritis. This will cause a reluctanceto jump, discomfort around the legs, most-ly the hind legs, and maybe even a changein behavior.
When a cat gets sick, they are less like-ly to display their symptoms openlybecause in the wild weakness makes forbeing easy prey. Watching your cat closelyfor subtle changes in their behavior is anexcellent idea.
