Logistics & Travel

Lodging:• Lodging will be provided at Erdman Center at Princeton Seminary. Erdman Center is located at 20 Library

Place, Princeton, NJ—about a five minute walk from the Bonner Foundation at 10 Mercer Street.

• When registering, please provide any relevant requests. We will provide as many singles as we can; same

gendered participants from a campus may need to share a bathroom or room in some cases.

• Other lodging options may be arranged by you. We recommend using an online booking agent, such as

www.kayak.com (which searches all discount sites).

Meals:• Meals during the retreat will also be provided. This includes dinner in town on Saturday night, breakfast and

lunch on Sunday.

Getting to Princeton:• If you will fly, Newark International Airport or Philadelphia International Airport are both about an hour from

the Bonner Foundation and Princeton. Southwest Airlines flies into both locations. Kayak (www.kayak.com)

allows you to search all discount sites at once, except Southwest.

• Newark is to the north (41 miles) and has a train, operated by New Jersey Transit, which runs 2 or more times

each hour. Visit www.njtransit.com to find schedules between Newark Airport and Princeton Junction. We

can pick you up at Princeton Junction.

• Philadelphia Airport is to the south (55 miles). You can take a SEPTA Train into Philadelphia, then transfer to

another train (New Jersey Transit or Amtrak) from Market Street Station to Trenton. This is a bit more complex,

so we would recommend a rental car or shuttle (see below) if you don’t want to make these changes with

baggage.

• As noted in emails, if you will arrive at Newark or Philadelphia Airport by 11:45 am on Saturday, we will have

one vehicle make a pick up. Contact Ariane Hoy if you are interested in this pick-up.

• Shuttle service can be arranged via Olympic Airporter from either airport into downtown Princeton. Visit

http://olympic-limo.com/ or call 800-822-9797.

Readings & Discussion

Part of the purpose of High-Impact Initiative is to equip you, as leaders of change,

with key ideas and frameworks. We ask that participants skim the following before

attending the High-Impact Planning Retreat. (For those of you in Cohort 1, most

were part of last year’s preparation). Click on the links to access publications via

online pdfs (all are on the wiki). We will also email a dropbox with copies.

Advance Preparation

Bio (Submit with Registration): Before attending the retreat, please make sure to submit a short bio in your registration form. Also, With

nearly 20 schools in attendance, we won't have time for each school to make detailed presentations.  So, we

are relying on you to submit your bio(s) so that we can put together a good roster.

Slide Preparation:We would also like each person to email one slide about your institution. This should include the following

elements:

• name of your institution and campus center

• pieces of your center and/or campus mission statement (that are relevant)

• number of students you serve (and other distinctive elements should you choose)

• team leader name(s) and position(s)

• photo(s) as desired

• listing of a few high-impact practices and (potentially high-impact) community engagement programs/

connections (for Cohort 1, this can include a synopsis of your year one projects)

Email Ariane Hoy at [email protected] by March 21, 2013 including this document in a pdf format.

To make preparing this slide quicker and easier, we have created a template, which is on the wiki or in the dropbox in two formats:  Power-Point or Keynote for Mac users). You may want to download fonts from the

dropbox or dafont.com first. Of course, you are free to personalize the style (photos, color, etc.) but the slides

will help us get similar information on each school.

Mental Notes:

Project Brainstorms: Before you come to the July 8-12 Institute, we would like teams to have met and

begin to brainstorm potential high-impact projects. So, for the retreat, we also ask you to make a list of 2-4

projects that might occur (think about the high-impact practices and the structure of your community

engagement programs).

For Cohort 1: your projects should build upon the projects in year one. In particular, be ready to describe the

status of year one projects and how year two projects will move community engagement to be deeper, more

pervasive, more integrated, and developmental.

For Cohort 2 (just joining): your list should be a brainstorm of 2-3 high-impact practices and how you might

connect them to community engagement. A guidepost will be a project that will make community

engagement deeper, more pervasive, more integrated, and developmental at your institution and in the

community. We will be discussing this in more detail.
