Bonnie Schwichtenberg and Jan Loebel will be moving to Wisconsin before long. The warmer weather will delight us with many activities on the water and in the water. The flurry of activity will include many outdoor art fairs as Minnesotans rush to glory in our short but beautiful summer. Our next member meeting isn’t until September, but we have several good opportunities to keep creating throughout the summer. A few words first about our May meeting: We had a very good turnout for Judy Fawcett’s demo. We brought out sketchbooks as Judy suggested some simple ways to sketch figures. She showed how figures can add interest to a painting, even though they may not be the focus of the piece. She used strong layers of color and a well-planned design for the rest of her demonstration. Judy encouraged a dialogue with the members, and plenty of banter arose among the group. It was good to see a fresh approach to watercolor. She completed her painting later, so please take a look at it on our web site and in the newsletter. As for the summer, we will be closing up two shows shortly at St. Cloud Hospital and Good Shepherd Community. Thanks to everyone involved for a couple of outstanding exhibits. At a recent board meeting we discussed how the quality of art at CMW exhibits has grown recently. Certainly all the workshops have been a benefit to continued artistic growth in our group. The President’s Message Hello CMW members,

Change is afoot in several areas as we enter our sunny summer season.

July promises to be a busy exhibit month with St. Cloud Library, East Bank Gallery of Sioux Falls, and Munsinger Garden shows. Unless, of course, you have other outdoor plans, which is fine too. Sometimes a little break can be beneficial. A little recharging, so to speak. Dan Mondloch’s Plein Air Workshop is June 6, 7, and 8. He is an expert at the Plein Air process and is a great instructor. Do plan ahead if you are looking to participate in the David Smith workshop this October 19-21st. Derick took several names at our May meeting to reserve a spot. Call him at 320-257-5928.

I expect to see many of you when you drop off art for the Sioux Falls show. I e-mailed all the participants, so watch your e-mail for any late changes. Please visit our web site for the newest information and awards our members receive. It is a great resource for us. I will leave you with some words from Edgar Degas: “Art is not what you see, but what you make others see.”

Happy painting, Kerry Kupferschmidt

The Banner Painting

“Three Jacks“ is an 8 x 10-inch watercolor painted by Bonnie Schwichtenberg. Many of Bonnie’s paintings, like this one, are centered on nature and show her passion for gardening and flowers. Her Jack in the Pulpits were planted by a bird in her shade garden. Bonnie used Antwerp, Windsor Yellow, and Quinacridone Burnt Orange to create the painting while working from her photo. She made the diagonal corner pairs the same hue to help move the eye around the painting.

Bonnie and her husband Tom have purchased a home in Wisconsin and will be moving soon. Many of us will miss Bonnie’s knowledge of watercolor and her generous spirit in assisting beginners. Thank you, Bonnie, for the encouragement you have given to so many of our members and for your dedication to CMW. We wish you the best as you move to Wisconsin and hope you return often to visit and attend CMW workshops. We will miss you!

May Demo Artist

Judy Fawcett gave an interesting

demo highlighting her philosophy of “painting for fun” and “what she cares

a lot about.” Beginning with a value sketch and then painting a small version, she

moves to her final painting. In her first wash, Judy goes around the whites;

middle values are added in the second wash as she goes over the areas that are going to be darker; and finally she

mixes the three colors that she is using in the painting to make

variations in the darkest darks.

Congratulations for your awards and sales!

Sandra Driscoll sold three paintings at the Watercolor Society Spring Show

at the MN Landscape Arboretum: Sumac Beauty

Garden Greens & Swan Meeting

The show continues until June 18th

Linda Addicott made the front page of the St. Cloud Times in May for her

volunteer work with the Paramount Teaching Artists program. She teaches

watercolor classes at St. Benedicts Nursing Home, but this class was extra-

special in that her assistant was celebrity Jane Seymour. This is a photo of the May 5th class with three of the

fourteen residents who completed their sunflower painting.

Kathy Braud had a display of her paintings for sale at the three-day Northstar Water Media Society Artist Market Show, which took place in the Fine Arts Building at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds from May 19-21. Kathy gave an engaging demo on using Yes! Canvas. This takes advantage of a current decorating trend, and you don’t have the expense of matting and framing. Good job, Kathy!

CMW CALENDAR

June 1st – June 30th: Centra Care Plaza CMW Exhibit. Hang date is June 1 from 4-5pm. $5 fee. The commission for selling a painting is 15% payable to CentraCare within 15 days of the sale. Takedown is June 30 from 4-5pm.

June 9th: St. Cloud Down Town Association Spring Art Crawl. Marilyn Clement and Pat Spence will be our CMW demo artists in Studio B of the Paramount from 5-9pm.

June 13th: CMW members are invited to a Farewell Party for Bonnie Schwichtenberg and Jan Loebel. It will begin at 5:00 p.m. at Jimmy’s Pour House in Sauk Rapids. We have reserved the meeting room and will be ordering off the menu.

June 26th & 27th: East Bank Gallery Show participants bring your paintings to Kerry’s house between 3:30 and 5pm. $5 fee. Wrap your paintings in bubble wrap and place in a large yard bag with your name on the outside. Also, have your signed Guest Artist Agreement. Delivery of paintings will be by Kerry on July 2nd at 1pm. Opening reception is July 7th from 5 to 8pm. Mary Buhl will represent CMW. If you would like to ride with her, please call her. The show ends on July 30th, and Bonnie & Tom Schwichtenberg will pack the paintings for the return trip. If you can ride with them and give them a hand with the packing, it will be appreciated. Jana Tonsfeldt will provide additional transportation for the drive back with the paintings. Pick up your paintings on July 30th in the northwest corner of the St. Cloud Library Parking Lot between 6:45 and 7:45pm. (The library will not be open).

June 30th – July 31st: St Cloud Library CMW Exhibit. $5 fee. Contact Yvonne by email if you want to participate; there is room for more paintings. Hang date is Friday, June 30th from 4-5pm and take down date will be in the next newsletter, most likely July 31st from 4-5pm. This is one of THREE exhibits we have in July.

July 20th: Art in Munsinger Garden from 10am to 7pm. This is a beautiful setting for CMW members to display paintings near the shade gardens. Paintings must be no larger than 12 ½ inches x 16 inches, as this size sells well and is easy for people to carry with them. The art can be either in frames or matted but ready to hang from an S hook. In hot weather, tape on the back can release from matted pieces, so please make the hangers as secure as possible. If you haven’t signed up, please contact Pat Spence as soon as possible. She will be emailing a request for volunteers to help staff the display for setup and during the sale. We had good sales last year of paintings and cards, so let’s make this a tradition! Please bring your paintings by 8:30am. We will have CMW labels available for you if you wish to use them.

This is my first newsletter as your new Board Secretary and Newsletter Editor. I will try to carry on the

good work of the previous editors and especially want to thank Bonnie Schwichtenberg for the time she

spent to make a smooth transition. This is your newsletter, so please send me information about your

shows, awards, classes, and anything that might interest the rest of our members. My contact information

is on the last page of the newsletter. Thank you in advance for your help. I welcome your input.

August 11: St. Cloud Downtown Association Art Crawl from 3 to 9pm. This is a longer time period than other Art Crawls, so we have four demo artists to make two shifts. Mary Buhl, Kerry Kupferschmidt, and Barb Rogan have already volunteered. If you can help, please call or email Kerry. This is a way we partner with the Paramount bringing art to the public.

September 11th: CMW ANNUAL MEETING at the Watab Town Hall at 5pm. More details will follow in upcoming newsletters. This is a fun annual event with dinner, social time, and an auction of great art stuff.

September 30th: Hang date for the CMW Great River Arts Show in Little Falls. This is a wonderful opportunity to hang your paintings at a professional gallery in a non-juried show. Please contact Yvonne to enter the show; at this time only fourteen members have committed. The reception date will be confirmed in the next newsletter and will be the same day as the takedown of the show in late October. There is a 40% commission on sold paintings for non-members of Great River Arts & 30% for members. $5 fee to participate.

October 9: CMW Monthly Meeting at the Paramount. Suz Galloway, a member of the Transparent Watercolor Society and American Society of Botanical Artists will give the demo. She conducts many workshops and gives private lessons.

October 30 – December 4: CMW Paramount Lobby Show. Times will be given in future newsletters. We will again have a friendly competition for a “Members’ Choice Award” from this show.

November 13: CMW Monthly Meeting at the Paramount. Karen Knutson will be the artist presenter.

Fall Workshop with David R. Smith, AWS

October 19-21, in conjunction with the Paramount Center for the Arts, CMW members have the opportunity to learn from award-winning watercolor artist, David R. Smith of Anoka. His favorite subjects are found in nature, and he uses his travels for inspiration. He has studied under numerous instructors in the U. S. and China, and his work has been recognized at both the state and national level. He has recently received Signature Membership with the American Watercolor Society. David had a highlighted display of his amazing paintings at the recent Northstar Water Society Artists’ Market at the State Fair Grounds. CMW members have first chance to register for the workshop by calling Derick at the Paramount (320-257-5928). He took names of those interested at the May CMW meeting, so call him soon before it is published for the public. Visit David Smith’s website at www.dsmithfineart.com.

CMW thanks Gordon & Yvonne Shrank for the donation of a demo camera to the Paramount. This is a

benefit to all future art classes.
