A MESSAGE FROM OUR RABBIS

We close our eyes and think of our loved ones. Even if but for a moment, the spark of their memory allows us to feel their presence. We see their faces, we hear their voices. We hold their hands, and hug and kiss them. For remembering our loved ones ensures that they remain here with us, a part of our lives.

At funerals, unveilings, and shiva homes, it is customary to offer the following prayer: Tehei Nishmato Tzerurah B’tzror HaChayim, a prayer in which we pray that our loved one’s soul is bound up in the bond of our lives.

Even if our friends and family have physically left this world, whether in the past year or many years ago, their souls remain forever intertwined in our lives. They live on through us. They live on through pictures we frame, through stories that we share, through recipes that we cook, through jokes we tell, and through memories we hold dear.

That is the power of memory. Yizkor. Remember. Memory allows our loved ones to remain close to us, to stay with us, long after they have left this world. We remember them and teach about them to future generations, ensuring that they leave an imprint on this world.

We never truly stop remembering a loved one. Months or years after they have passed away, they still remain in our thoughts on a daily basis. But ritualizing their memories allows them to remain a part of our lives and a part of this world—their souls bound up in our lives—and ensures that the lives we live are still very much impacted by their teachings and their presence. So we take the time to remember them. At the holiest moments of the year, we pause to remember our loved ones, to remember that they are sacred, to remember that they are holy. We remember both the bitter and the sweet. We remember the lasting impact they had on our lives.Let us pause now to remember them. May they fill this space. May their memories stay with us at this moment and remain with us in all moments, and as we remember them, may their memories always be for a blessing.

BETH EL CHEVRA KADISHAOne leaves the world as one enters the world. Just as newborns are washed and dressed as they enter the world, so too the deceased are cleansed and dressed as they depart.

Jewish laws (mitzvot) concerning death and mourning are simple, yet profound. They are: Kavod HaMet (Honoring the Dead) and Nichum Avelim (Comforting the Mourners). They are meant to support us through our loss and grief. Since Talmudic times, Jews have sought to fulfill these mitzvot with the help of a Chevra Kadisha, or Sacred Burial Society.

A Chevra Kadisha offers practical and ritual assistance to members of their community during times of loss and bereavement. Unlike modern funeral homes, which exist outside the life of a congregation, the Chevra Kadisha is part of the community it serves, thus able to provide personal assistance within the context of a loving congregation.

It seems natural that a congregation as warm and caring as Beth El should have its own Chevra Kadisha and we do! The dedicated volunteers that form Beth El’s Chevra Kadisha (BECK) respond to the needs of our congregants at time of loss. Our Chevra will assist wherever possible in the fulfillment of the mitzvot to Honor the Dead and Comfort the Mourners.

Working closely with Rabbis Olitzky and Marder, BECK offers: Tahara (Ritual Preparation of the Body), Sh’mira (Watching over the Body Before Burial) and extra help to mourners with Shiva preparations including providing Shiva minyan leaders. Rabbi Olitzky, Rabbi Marder and BECK work together to meet the needs of each unique family in mourning.

At the rising of the sun and at its going down

FOR THESE WE WEEP

At this sacred time, we pause to remember a tragic era in our recent history, when light was obscured by darkness, when the forces of evil were arrayed against our people.

Six million Jews, among them one and a half million children, a third of our people, were sent to their death in the gas chambers of Europe.

Auschwitz, Dachau, Buchenwald, Treblinka, Bergen-Belsen, Theresienstadt-these very names evoke horror and pain.

And yet we recall these names, and the barbarous acts associated with them, so that the travail of our people may inspire generations yet unborn to learn well the lessons of that evil time.

The memory of our slain brothers and sisters must remain forever etched in the conscience of mankind.

And as we recall their unanswered cries, we must pledge ourselves never to be silent in the face of tyranny or injustice.

We must transform grief into compassion. We must give evidence of remembering them through acts of kindness and courage.

Thus will our actions serve as monuments of the spirit to those who perished.

O Lord, remember Thy martyred children, as we pledge to remember them.

And may their memory be for us a challenge and inspiration.
