May Their Memory BeForever A Blessing
The Blessing of Memory
It is hard to sing of oneness when our world is not complete, when those who once broughtwholeness to our life have gone and naught but memory can fill the emptiness their passingleaves behind.
But memory can tell us only that we were, in company with those we loved; it cannot help usfind what each of us, alone, must now become. Yet no one is really alone; those who live nomore echo still within our thoughts and words and what they did is part of what we havebecome.
We do best homage to our dead when we love our lives most fully, even in the shadow of ourloss. For each of our lives is worth the life of the whole world; in each one of the breath of theUltimate One. In affirming the One, we affirm the worth of each one whose life, now ended, brought us closer to the Source of life, in whose unity no one is alone and every life findspurpose.
Gates of Prayer
The Day of Atonement can be understood in part as a kind of annual encounter with orrehearsal for death. The person who on this day lets go of all his ordinary pleasures andpossessions, who on this day touches no food or drink, who on this day blesses his children asif in farewell and who on this day takes seriously the liturgy with all its stress on man’s frailty, feels his mortality as on no other day.
Jack ReimerJewish Reflections on Death.
I believe that we are still . . . “commanded to remember the victims of Auschwitz, lest theirmemory perish . . . Forbidden to despair of God, lest Judaism perish . . . Forbidden to despair ofthe world - as the domain of God - lest the world be handed over to the forces of Auschwitz.”
Emil FackenheimProfessor of Philosophy
We cannot choose our time of birth, but we can choose our manner of life. We cannot hope tolive forever, but we can choose to live with courage.
Rabbi Chaim Stern
When Akavya ben Mahalel was on his deathbed, his son requested, “Father, commend me toyour colleagues.” Akavya replied, “I will not commend you.” His son asked, “Have you foundsome fault with me?” His father answered, “No. But your own good deeds will bring you nearto them without commendation and your own bad deeds will remove you from them despiteany commendation.”
Jerusalem Talmud Eduyot 5:7
When the hour arrived for Rabbi Simhah Bunan of Psyshcha to depart from the world, his wifestood by his bedside and wept bitterly. He said to her, “Be silent - why do you cry? My wholelife was only that I might learn how to die.” He died on the twelfth day of Elul, 1827.
Translated by Samuel H. Dresner Jewish Reflections on Death
God is the good in usGod is the bad in usHe is with us when
we need him to lean on andwhen we need guidance or help.
He helps us all throughour lives from the time
we are born, until we die.The help he gives us helps
us make the right decisions. He teaches us to laugh
and cry, to love and to learn.God is the soul within us.
Susan Hirsch z”lApril 3, 1983
In every person there is a private shrine of memory and love and in that sanctuary our lovedones abide. We sense their presence, caress their spirits and enfold them in our hearts. Theytalk to us; they tell tales. Thus, the pain of separation is soothed by memory, the hurtsustained is healed by love; and we ourselves become purified and ennobled through oursorrow.
