We are delighted to welcome you to the Darden—Cambridge Judge—HKU FBE Entrepreneurship and Innova on Research Conference. This year marks three impressive milestones for the conference’s evo-lu on over the years:

• It is the ninth consecu ve year of the conference series, which is a testament to the vitality of collec-

ve efforts in our fields of study and the importance of research topics related to entrepreneurship and innova on in our society.

• Darden and Cambridge Judge are thrilled to have The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Busi-

ness and Economics (FBE) join this excep onal partnership as the conference’s newest sponsor and look forward to all the poten al and prospect can be achieved with this alliance.

• This conference has achieved a truly global reach now that it has a new home in Asia and has extend-

ed its visibility and status to both academic and industrial communi es in the East. This year’s program con nues the conference’s founding commitment of gathering diverse scholars fo-cused on the cross-disciplined challenges of Entrepreneurship and Innova on from a global perspec ve. This conference seeks to spur dialogues enriched by this range of perspec ves that lead to novel insights for researchers, policy makers, and prac oners. It is our great honour to have two outstanding keynote speakers for this year’s conference to share their thoughts with us. Prof. Karl T. Ulrich (Vice Dean of Entrepreneurship and Innova on and the CIBC Pro-fessor of Entrepreneurship and e-Commerce at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania) will talk about “Managing the Threat of Disrup on Due to Technological Innova on”, and Prof. David Hsu (Richard A. Sapp Professor of Management and Entrepreneurship and Innova on Area Coordinator at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania) will talk about “Entrepreneurial Strategy”. Moreover, we would be remiss if we did not take advantage of the fact that the conference is hosted in Hong Kong, one of the major global financial hubs that is full of entrepreneurial ac vi es and is conven-iently adjacent to Shenzhen, the Silicon Valley of China. To this end, we include a panel with discussions with start-up entrepreneurs who are part of the Chinese entrepreneurial network, to listen to their ex-perience about the opportuni es and challenges they face, which hopefully s mulate interes ng re-search ideas. History The Ba en Ins tute at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business hosted the inaugural annual conference (organized by Michael Lenox) in 2010. That first event a racted scholars from all over the world and featured a scholarly debate between Jay Barney and Sid Winter. As the conference grew in popularity, Darden partnered with the Academy of Management in hos ng the 2012 event, which ena-bled the program to be streamed live to every con nent. A er that successful event, the Cambridge Judge Business School joined in 2013 as a co-sponsor alongside Darden. Since then, the event shi ed loca on between the United Kingdom and the United States. In 2018, The University of Hong Kong (HKU) Faculty of Business and Economics (FBE) will join Darden and Cambridge Judge to co-host this event for the first me in Asia. Po-Hsuan Hsu (HKU FBE), Stelios Kavadias (Cambridge Judge), and Jeremy Hutchison-Krupat (Virginia Darden) will serve as the three co-chairs for the 2018 event.

The conference promises to provide a vigorous and lively discussion about current research in the fields of entrepreneurship and innova on from a global perspec ve. The conference commi ee also extends an invita on to interested scholars to a end the conference regardless of if a paper is submi ed.

Karl T. Ulrich is Vice Dean of Entrepreneurship & Innova on and the CIBC Professor of Entrepreneurship and e-Commerce at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds an appointment as Professor of Mechanical Engineering. His research is focused on innova on, entrepreneurship, and product development. He is the co-author of Product Design and Development (6th Edi on, McGraw-Hill, 2015), a textbook used by a quarter of a million students worldwide, and of Innova on Tournaments (Harvard Business Press, 2009). He is the winner of many teaching awards, including the Anvil Award, the Miller-Sherrerd Award, and the Excellence in Teaching Award at The Wharton School. At Penn, he co-founded the Weiss Tech House and the Integrated Product Design Program, two ins tu ons fostering innova on in the university community. In addi on to his academic work, Professor Ulrich has led dozens of innova on efforts for medical devices, tools, computer pe-ripherals, food products, web-based services, and spor ng goods. As a result of this work, he holds 24 patents. Professor Ulrich is a founder of Terrapass Inc. which the New York Times iden fied as one of the most notewor-thy ideas of the year, and he is a designer of the Xootr scooter, which Business Week recognized as one of the 50 coolest products of the 21st Century. Professor Ulrich holds bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees in mechanical engineering from MIT.

David Hsu is the Richard A. Sapp Professor of Management at the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. He graduated from Stanford University with undergraduate majors in economics and poli cal science. A er a few years working in industry, he received his master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University, fol-lowed by his Ph.D. in management from the Massachuse s Ins tute of Technology.

Hsu’s research interests are in entrepreneurial innova on and management. Within that domain, he has inves -gated topics such as intellectual property management, start-up innova on, technology commercializa on strategy, and venture capital. His research has appeared in leading journals such as Journal of Finance, Manage-ment Science, RAND Journal of Economics, and Research Policy. He serves as a department editor of the Entre-preneurship and Innova on department of Management Science. In 2008, Hsu was awarded an Alfred P. Sloan Founda on Industry Studies Fellowship. At Wharton, he teaches two MBA elec ves, Entrepreneurship and Technology Strategy. At Penn, Hsu is Associate Faculty Director of the Weiss Tech House, which encourages and supports students in the crea on, development, and commercializa on of innova ve technologies.

Keynote Speakers

Po‐Hsuan Hsu is currently a Professor of finance in The University of Hong Kong. He received his Ph.D. degree in finance from the Graduate School of Business, Columbia University in 2007. Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong, He was an assistant professor of finance at the School of Business, University of Connec cut in 2007-2011. He also holds a master degree in management of technology from Na onal Chiao-Tung University and a bachelor degree in interna onal business from Na onal Taiwan University. He was a fellow of Ba en Ins tute of Darden School of Business, University of Virginia in 2017. His research agenda focuses on the interac on between technological innova on and financial markets, and he has organized several conferences in innova on and finance, including the AIEA-NBER 2017, Darden-Cambridge Judge-HKU FBE Entrepreneurship and Innova on Conference 2018, HKU Symposium on Innova on Strategy and Entrepreneurial Finance (2014 to 2016), and Hong Kong joint Finance Research Workshop (2014). He has served as a panelist/mentor for the Junior Faculty Consor um in Academy of Management Conference (Technology and Innova on Management Division). His research has been published in several academic journals including Review of Economics and Sta s cs, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Interna onal Economics, Journal of Financial and Quan ta ve Analysis, and Contemporary Accoun ng Research. He also has papers published at Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. His papers won the best paper awards at FMA Annual Mee ng and NTU IEFA Conference.

Session Chairs

Jeremy Hutchison‐Krupat is an Assistant Professor of Business Administra on in the Technology and Opera ons Management area at the University of Virginia’s Darden Graduate School of Business. His research focuses on the effec ve implementa on of a firm's innova on strategy. His recent work evaluates the effect that different organiza onal structures, norms, and processes have on a firm's ability to innovate.

Jeremy is a Senior Editor at Produc on and Opera ons Management in the Management of Technology Department and an Associate Editor for the Product and Process Innova on area of Decision Sciences. He regularly teaches open enrollment and custom execu ve educa on programs to help leaders develop their ability to address innova on challenges. Jeremy has authored a number of case studies, pedagogical exercises, and computer simula ons, all aimed at providing a rich context within which the prac ce of innova on can be taught.

Prior to pursuing his Ph.D. at the Georgia Ins tute of Technology, Jeremy worked for Avery Dennison Corpora on where he played an integral role in their R&D organiza on, and their overall opera ons.

Stylianos (Stelios) Kavadias is Margaret Thatcher Professor of Enterprise Studies in Innova on & Growth Director of the Entrepreneurship Centre of Judge Business School, University of Cambridge. Before joining University of Cambridge, he taught in Georgia Ins tute of Technology and University of Virginia. He received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and Computer Engineering (MSc Equiv.) from Na onal Technical University Athens (NTUA) and his Ph.D. in Management from INSEAD. He has published in several top academic journals including Management Science, Manufacturing & Service Opera ons Management, and Produc on and Opera ons Management. His research interests revolve around the effec veness of new product development (NPD) decisions with a par cular focus on decisions that relate to: (i) strategy implementa on through the appropriate resource alloca on rules and the defini on of the “right” por olio of new projects and products; (ii) the R&D idea on, search and experimenta on process both at a firm level and the project team level; (iii) the effects of the organiza onal design and the associated incen ve schemes on the product development outcome. At a broader level she seeks to understand the challenges that arise during the planning and execu on phases of the innova on process, always with an opera onal/managerial perspec ve.



Michael Lenox is the Tayloe Murphy Professor of Business at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business where he teaches the core MBA strategy course. He also serves as the school’s Senior Associate Dean and Chief Strategy Office. From 2008 to 2016, he served as Associate Dean of Innova on Programs and Academic Director of Darden’s Ba en Ins tute for Entrepreneurship and Innova on. He helped found and served as the inaugural president of the mul ple-university Alliance for Research on Corporate Sustainability. Prior to joining Darden in 2008, Professor Lenox was a professor at Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business where he served as the area coordinator for Fuqua’s Strategy Area and the faculty director and founder of Duke’s Corporate Sustainability Ini a ve. He received his Ph.D. in Technology Management and Policy from the Massachuse s Ins tute of Technology and the degrees of Bachelor and Master of Science in Systems Engineering from the University of Virginia. Professor Lenox has served as an assistant professor at New York University’s Stern School of Business and as a visi ng professor at Stanford University, Harvard University, Oxford University, and IMD.

Professor Lenox’s research has appeared in over twenty-five refereed academic publica ons and has been cited in a number of media outlets including the New York Times, the Financial Times, and the Economist. In 2009, he was recognized as a Faculty Pioneer by the Aspen Ins tute and as the top strategy professor under 40 by the Strategic Management Society. In 2011, he was named one of the top 40 business professors under 40 by Poets & Quants. Professor Lenox’s primary exper se is in the domain of technology strategy and policy. He is broadly interested in the role of innova on and entrepreneurship for economic growth and firm compe ve success. In par cular, he explores the business strategy and public policy drivers of the direc on of innova ve ac vity. Professor Lenox also has a long-standing interest in the interface between business strategy and public policy as it relates to the natural environment. Recent work explores firm strategies and non-tradi onal public policies that have the poten al to drive “green” innova on and entrepreneurship.

Andrew King is currently an Associate Director at the Ba en Ins tute for Entrepreneurship and Innova on, University of Virginia Darden School of Business. He has been the execu ve of the Darden-Cambridge Judge-HKU FBE Entrepreneurship and Innova on Research Conference since its incep on in 2010. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of Virginia Darden School of Business and received a B.A. in Economics from Sewanee-The University of the South and an M.S. in Interna onal Management from Oxford Brookes University.

Tian Chan is an Assistant Professor of Informa on Systems and Opera ons Management at Emory University's Goizueta Business School. He research into understanding and resolving the opera onal issues surrounding the new product development process. He focuses at the interplay between design and technology, how breakthrough ideas come about, and when and why collabora ve efforts some mes fail in the development of products and services. He received his BS degree from UC Berkeley, MS from Stanford University, and PhD from INSEAD. Before his PhD he worked on technology development at PSA Interna onal, a global transporta on company.

Authors

Ramakrishna Devarakonda is an Assistant Professor in the department of management at CUHK business school. His research interests are broadly in the areas of strategy and entrepreneurship. His current research inves gates coopera ve commercializa on strategies and technology entrepreneurship. He has a PhD in Strategic Management (minor: Industrial Organiza on). He obtained bachelor's degree in engineering from Indian Ins tute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay), masters in public policy from Na onal University of Singapore.

Terence Fan is Assistant Professor at Lee Kong Chian School of Business, Singapore Management University. His work spans the topic of inter-firm compe on among airlines, interna onaliza on of small- and medium- enterprises to the blackbox of innova on in developing so ware applica ons. His work has been published in outlets such as the Strategic Management Journal and the Journal of Interna onal Business Studies. Terence was trained in engineering, and gained work experience in North America, Europe before moving to Singapore.

Tristan Fitzgerald Mo vated by my investment banking experience at J.P. Morgan and Macquarie Bank, I am interested in understanding the impact of financial transac ons and financial intermediaries on the real economy. In par cular, I am interested in how financial markets and financial intermediaries may ac vely shape the nature of innova on that is undertaken by firms and entrepreneurs. I will be joining Texas A&M University's finance faculty in August 2018.

Bri a Glennon is a PhD Candidate at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research focuses on the economics of innova on and technological change, with a par cular focus on China. She speaks Mandarin Chinese and has lived in both Taiwan and China.

Minki Kim is an Assistant Professor of Marke ng at Korea Advanced Ins tute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He received his Ph.D. in economics from the University of Chicago with a focus on quan ta ve marke ng and new empirical industrial organiza on, and a B.A. in economics from Seoul Na onal University. Methodologically, he is interested in developing both structural econometric modeling and interdisciplinary empirical methods to be er understand consumer and firm behavior. His recent research interests are firms’ product reposi oning strategies, and content marke ng u lizing business analy cs. He has published in several journals such as Journal of Marke ng Research, Quan ta ve Marke ng and Economics, and Interna onal Journal of Research in Marke ng, etc.


Kazuyuki Motohashi is a Professor of TMI department and the director of interna onal technology Management Program. He is also served as a faculty fellow at RIETI (Research Ins tute for Economy, Trade and Industry) and a visi ng researcher at NISTEP (Na onal Ins tute for Science and Technology Policy). Un l this year, he had taken various posi ons at the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of the Japanese Government, economist at OECD and associate professor at Hitotsubashi University. His research interest covers a broad range of issues in economic and sta s cal analysis of innova on, including economic impacts of informa on technology, interna onal comparison of produc vity, na onal innova on system focusing on science and industry linkages and SME innova on and entrepreneurship policy. He has published several papers and books on above issues, including Produc vity in Asia: Economic Growth and Compe veness (2007), Global Business Strategy: Mul na onal’s Venturing Into Emerging Economies (2014). Ivan Png is Dis nguished Professor in the School of Business and Department of Economics at the Na onal University of Singapore. His research focuses on the economics of innova on and produc vity. He is the author of Managerial Economics, which has been published in mul ple edi ons. He is the Principal Inves gator of a $4.75 million project, SPIRE (Service Produc vity and Innova on Research), funded by the Social Sciences Research Council, Singapore, 2017-22. For leisure, he exercises with his wife and plays tennis and the violin (both badly).

Pian Shu is an Assistant Professor in Strategy & Innova on at Scheller College of Business, Georgia Ins tute of Technology. Her current research focuses on the origin, development, and deployment of innova ve and entrepreneurial talent. She has several projects examining different popula ons of innovators and the demand-side forces, such as globaliza on, that could influence the supply of innovators and entrepreneurs. She was an Assistant Professor at Harvard Business School from 2012 to 2017 and a visi ng scholar at MIT Sloan School of Management from 2016 to 2017. Pian received a Ph.D. in economics from the Massachuse s Ins tute of Technology in 2012 and a BA in mathema cs and mathema cal economics from Colgate University in 2007.

Chiara Spina is a PhD Candidate at Bocconi University, conduc ng empirical research on decision-making in early stage entrepreneurship. Her disserta on examines the link between choices and performance in entrepreneurial firms and has recently been awarded a grant by the Strategic Management Society (SMS). Chiara’s research draws on recent se ngs to collect fine-grained data on early stage entrepreneurial firms, such as crowdfunding, accelerators, and hackathons. Her quan ta ve work mostly employs text analysis and experimental methods. Chiara holds a Bachelor’s degree in Business Studies and a Master’s degree in Organiza onal Behaviour from University of Milan and the London School of Economics and Poli cal Science. Chiara has for years of professional experience as a Human Resources Advisor for a mul na onal based in London, United Kingdom.

Neil Thompson I am an Assistant Professor of Innova on and Strategy at the MIT Sloan School of Management and co-director of the Experimental Innova on Lab (X-Lab). I am also an associate member of the MIT Computer Science and Ar ficial Intelligence Lab (CSAIL) and the Broad Ins tute of Harvard and MIT. I did my PhD in Business and Public Policy at Berkeley, where I also did Masters degrees in Computer Science and Sta s cs. I have a masters in economics from the London School of Economics, and undergraduate degrees in Physics and Interna onal Development.

Prior to academia, I worked at organiza ons such as Lawrence Livermore Na onal Laboratories, Bain and Company, The United Na ons, the World Bank, and the Canadian Parliament.


Kevin Tseng received his Ph.D. from Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University. He is currently an assistant professor of finance at the School of Business, University of Kansas. His research interests include Innova on Economics, Asset Pricing, and Corporate Finance. His research examines how learning through technology spillover affects firm's risk and informa on sharing. He also studies how financial slack affects the market valua on of firms' innova on outcomes. Prior to his doctoral studies, Kevin a ended the Na onal Taiwan University for his master studies and Na onal Chiao Tung University for his B.A. He was the recipient of the Western Finance Associa on 2015 Ph.D. Candidate Award for Outstanding Research.

Prasanna Karhade is an Assistant Professor of Innova on and Informa on Management at the Faculty of Business and Economics, The University of Hong Kong. He holds a Ph.D. in Business Administra on from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also earned a Master of Science degree (Computer Science) from Georgia State University and a Bachelor of Engineering degree (Computer Engineering) from Sardar Patel College of Engineering, University of Mumbai. He worked as a so ware engineer for about 30 months before embarking upon his academic journey. His research interests, which include design of formal contracts for governing IT outsourcing rela onships, IT governance, and the impact of IT on firm innova on, are at the intersec on of Management Informa on Systems and Strategic Management. Keongtae Kim is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Decision Sciences and Managerial Economics, CUHK Business School, the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK). Prior to joining CUHK, he was an Assistant Professor at the Department of Informa on Systems at the City University of Hong Kong. He received his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Seoul Na onal University, South Korea, and his M.S. in Management Engineering from KAIST Business School, South Korea. He earned his Ph.D in Informa on Systems from the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland. His main research focuses on crowd-based innova on (crowdfunding/crowdsourcing), technology entrepreneurship, IT and labor market, and IT business value. Michael Leiblein is an Associate Professor at Ohio State University. Michael’s research explores associa ons between a ributes of business problems, organiza onal design choices, and measures of compe ve advantage and performance. His research has been published in outlets such as the Strategic Management Journal and the Academy of Management Journal, disseminated into prac ce through prominent periodicals including the Financial Times of London, and received awards from the BPS, TIM, and OM divisions of the AoM, the Academy of Interna onal Business, and the Na onal Science Founda on. Michael’s present and forthcoming research includes development of a behavioral real op on theory that suggests how bias may lead to compe ve advantage, a series of experiments that show how individual characteris cs affect decisions highlighted by classic organiza onal theories, and empirical work that demonstrates the influence of interdependencies between organiza on design and loca on choices. Pedro Matos is the Academic Director of Richard A. Mayo Center for Asset Management, holds the John G. Macfarlane Family Chair in Business Administra on and is an Associate Professor in the Finance area at the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business. His research focuses on the growing importance of ins tu onal investors in financial markets worldwide. His work has been published in top academic journals and been featured also in the press, including in The Economist, The Financial Times and the New York Times. Federico Munari is Professor of Technology and Innova on Management at the Department of Management of the University of Bologna. He holds a Ph.D. in Management from the University of Bologna, and has been visi ng scholar at the MIT Sloan School of Management and visi ng researcher at the Ecole des Mines de Paris and at the Cass Business School of London. He has been the Coordinator of the PhD in Business Administra on of the University of Bologna and Director of the Master in Intellectual Property of the University of Bologna. His main research interests are in the fields of technology commercialisa on, university-industry collabora ons, entrepreneurial finance, IPR management and valua on.

Ningxin Wang Broadly, I am interested how organiza ons (countries, corpora ons, and also small firms or young ventures) react to environmental changes. My current research focuses on firm innova on, corporate venturing, and interna onal entrepreneurship. I specifically examined how characteris cs of top managers/entrepreneurs influence the pursuits of entrepreneurial ac vi es and further shapes the performance outcomes of firm innova on and corporate external venturing.

Andrew Yanzhi Wang is a Professor at the College of Management at the Na onal Taiwan University. Before arriving at NTU in 2012, he was an Associate Professor at Yuan Ze University. He received his PhD in Finance from Department of Finance at Na onal Taiwan University in 2005. His research examines corporate finance issues, payout policy and innova on. Ting Xu is an Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Virginia, Darden School of Business. His research focuses on entrepreneurial finance, FinTech, and the governance of closely-held firms. His work has explored the feedback role of crowdfunding, the effect of job-protected leave on entrepreneurship, and the ownership structure of private firms. Paul Y S Cheung is Professor in Electrical & Electronic Engineering and Programme Director of MSc in E-Commerce & Internet Compu ng at the University of Hong Kong. He joined The University of Hong Kong since 1980 and was Dean of Engineering (1994-2000), Associate Vice-President (Research) (2012-15), Director of Technology Transfer Office & Managing Director of Versitech (2004-16). He is responsible for driving many innova on and entrepreneurship ini a ves in the University including the DreamCatchers, the Entrepreneurship Academy and the TSSSU@HKU program. He was on secondment from the University to the Hong Kong Government as the Policy Advisor of the Innova on and Technology Commission from 2002-04. Prior joining the Government, he was Corporate Senior Vice-President in technology, at Pacific Century CyberWorks (PCCW) responsible for the strategic development in technology for the Group while on leave from the University from 2000-02.

Professor Cheung received his B.Sc.(Eng) (First Class Honours) and Ph.D. degrees from the Imperial College, University of London, both in Electrical Engineering in 1973 and 1978, respec vely. Professor Cheung is ac ve in serving the professional community, and was the IEEE Asia Pacific Director (1995-96) and IEEE Secretary (1997). Keivan Aghasi is Research Associate at the Entrepreneurship Centre at Judge Business School. At this posi on, he conducts research to unravel the challenges of growth and transforma on of start-ups into viable businesses as well as the impact of privately or publicly funded start-up support programs (e.g. accelerators and incubators) in the start-up eco-system. Chang Dong is currently a PhD student of Department of Industrial Engineering and Decision Analy cs in Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Hsiao‐Hui Lee is an Associate Professor of Innova on and Informa on Management at the Faculty of Business and Economics of The University of Hong Kong, and is the program director of Master of Science in Business Analy cs. She received her Ph.D. in Opera ons Management from the Simon School at Rochester University, where she examined issues in service and healthcare areas using stochas c models. Yonghoon Lee is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Management, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Jialiang Lin is currently an MPhil student in economics at HKUST. Before that, he obtained his bachelor’s degree from HKU, with majors in economics and finance and a minor in mathema cs. He will be a ending Princeton University for his PhD in economics. His research interests include macroeconomics, finance, and industrial organiza on. In par cular, he is interested in models about imperfect informa on, dynamic games, networks, and search. Haibo Liu joined the faculty of the UCR School of Business in July 2015 as Assistant Professor of Management. Haibo’s current research interests include innova on and organiza onal learning with an emphasis on extreme performance. In par cular, he examines antecedents and consequences of extreme performance, such as extremely crea ve and influen al designers, and extreme success and failures of franchise organiza ons. He engages in this research agenda in two se ngs: product design and franchising. His paper has won the Finalist for the Best Student Paper Award in the Technology and Innova on Management Division at Academy of Management (AOM) Conference in 2013.

Haibo received his Ph.D. from INSEAD. Before that, Haibo graduated from the Na onal University of Singapore with a First Class Honours degree in Bachelors of Engineering. Subsequently, Haibo obtained a joint Master Degree in Technological Design from the Na onal University of Singapore and Eindhoven University of Technology, Netherlands. Haibo has three years teaching experience at the Republic Polytechnic in Singapore. Prior to joining academia, Haibo worked as an R&D and product design engineer in an American mul na onal semiconductor company.

Ke Na joined The University of Hong Kong as an Assistant Professor of Accoun ng a er gradua ng from University of Rochester in July 2014. Dr. Na’s research focuses on execu ve compensa on and incen ves, the determinants and consequences of financial repor ng choices, and corporate tax strategies.

Yunan Liu is currently a PHD student of finance at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). Before joining the HKU family in 2014, he received a master degree in Opera onal Research from London School of Economics and Poli cal Sciences (LSE) and a bachelor degree in Interna onal Business from No ngham University. His areas of interest include Merger & Acquisi on, Innova on and Asset Pricing. In par cular, his recent focus is corporate innova on embodied through new product offering and trademark applica on. Jing Ren I am a first year PhD student at the Faculty of Business and Economics, The University of Hong Kong. A er receiving my Bachelor Degree from Fudan University in Shanghai, I have worked for Deloi e Consul ng as an ERP associate for about two years before commencing my PhD life. My supervisor is Prof. Chris ne M.K. CHAN from School of Business, whose research interests include foreign market entry decision, entry mode choice, interna onal joint venture, and performance of foreign affiliates of mul na onal corpora ons. She has published ar cles in the Strategic Management Journal and Journal of Interna onal Business Studies, and presented at the Academy of Management Conference, Academy of Interna onal Business Conference, and Asia Academy of Management Conference. Two of her conference papers have appeared in the Academy of Management Best Paper Proceedings. My research field is Interna onal Business and Strategy and at this stage, I mainly interested in cross-border mergers and acquisi ons, corporate social responsibility, as well as China topics such as poli cal leader.

Feng Tian joined The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in September 2015. He received his Master in Accoun ng from Fudan University and Ph.D. in Accoun ng from University of California-Irvine. He taught at The University of Hong Kong from 2008 to 2015. His current research interests are in earnings management, financial repor ng, accoun ng informa on systems, and innova on. Danqing Wang is an Assistant Professor in Management and Strategy area in The University of Hong Kong, star ng from Jul 2014. Ryan Qinyu Wang is currently a PhD student on strategy and management in The University of Hong Kong. His research interests include organiza on learning, knowledge crea on, storage, and transfer, mergers and acquisi ons in high-tech industries, research and development alliances, intellectual property related legal strategies, technological worker mobili es, the role of non-market forces or resources, such as, the role of culture, legal system, state ownership and poli cal connec on in firm’s innova on capabili es and some other factors which may improve or hamper a country' capability to turn itself into an innova on-oriented economy, and strategic issues in interna onal business, for instance, cross-border knowledge spillover and resorp on.

Hong Wu is currently Assistant Professor from the School of Accoun ng and Finance at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He graduated from University of Pi sburgh with PhD in Economics in 2015. His research interests include mergers and acquisi ons, corporate finance and innova on. His recent project seeks to understand the role of trademarks in M&As. He has published his papers in top journals such as Games and Economic Behavior and Journal of Banking and Finance.

Yuchen Xu obtained her undergraduate and Master degrees in France in the filed of Financial Engeneering and of Psychology. As a full- me PhD Students in The University of Hong Kong, she is interested in corporate finance and behavioral finance, and is discovering the field of government disclosure.

Aric Xu Wang is a PhD candidate in Management and Strategy at The University of Hong Kong. His research interest centers on innova on and entrepreneurship. His research topics include the mul ple influences of financial resource on new venture R&D and survival, how entrepreneurial characters affect new venture innova on and performance, etc. He’s also interested in green innova on strategies and they how benefit firm performance. Prior to PhD study, he had mul ple experiences with venture capital, business consul ng and regulatory agencies. He was born in Jiamusi, the eastern-most city in China, and enjoys lots of venturous ac vi es such as diving, hiking, traveling, and cat teasing.

Yiming Yang is currently a PhD student at the Faculty of Economics and Finance of The University of Hong Kong. Before that, she received her MSc in Finance with Dis nc on from Imperial College London. She also holds a Bachelor degree in Economics and a Bachelor of Laws (double major) from the University of Science and Technology Beijing. Her research interests include empirical asset pricing, innova on, interna onal financial markets, and financial econometrics. Her recent project seeks to connect innova on to product market segmenta on by using pres gious awards for technology breakthroughs in product inven ons.

Yupu Zhang is a finance PhD candidate from The University of Hong Kong. He received his M.S. in Financial Engineering from New York University and B.S. in Physics from Remin University of China. His research interests are empirical corporate finance, ESG and green bonds. He presented his green bond paper at Journal of Corporate Finance Special Issue Conference (2017) and China Interna onal Conference in Finance (scheduled, 2018).

Yiyuan Zhou is 1st-year PhD candidate in Finance from The University of Hong Kong and holds a MS in Engineering from Columbia University. Yiyuan's research interests are Corporate Finance, Climate Finance, and Innova on.

Wei Zhang is an Associate Professor with tenure at the School of Economics & Management (SEM) in Tsinghua University, Associate Director of Na onal Entrepreneurship Research Center at Tsinghua University, and Founding Director and Academic Director of Tsinghua x-lab. He was a Fulbright Visi ng Research Scholar 2011-2012 and Interna onal Faculty Fellow at MIT Sloan School of Management, and visi ng scholar at Stanford GSB in 2004. His research interests focus on venture capital, entrepreneurship and emerging industries (especially clean energy), exploring the nature and implica ons of micro-macro linkages in China’s transi onal context. He has been the project leader or key member for several research projects funded by China Na onal Science Founda on and Ministry of Educa on of China. He has published papers in Research Policy, Journal of Small Business Management, Management and Organiza on Review, China Economic Journal, etc. He co-authored the textbook of Entrepreneurial Management. He has instructed student teams of Tsinghua University that won many awards in na onal and global entrepreneurship compe ons, such as the championship of 2009 Intel + UC Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge (IBTEC).

Angela Zhang is an Associate Professor of Law at The University of Hong Kong and a Senior Lecturer in compe on law and trade at King’s College London (on leave). Her research focuses on applying an interdisciplinary approach to the study of law. More specifically, she is interested in legal issues posed by Chinese poli cal economy, the new economy and innova on. Angela is a twice winner of the Concurrence An trust Wri ng Award and her research has a racted media inquiries from The Economist, The New York Times and Reuters. Before joining academia, Angela prac ced bankruptcy law at Debevoise & Plimpton in New York and an trust law at Cleary Go lieb Steen & Hamilton in Brussels. She also has prac ce experience in Beijing, Hong Kong and London. Angela received her LLB from Peking University in 2004 and her JSD (2011), JD (2008) and LLM (2006) from the University of Chicago Law School.

Long Yi is an Assistant Professor of finance at the School of Business, Hong Kong Bap st University. He obtained his PhD degree from the Faculty of Business and Economics, University of Hong Kong. His research focuses on how firms are affected by outside factors such as product market compe on, ins tu onal investors, natural disasters, and so on. He also conducts research on empirical asset pricing. His papers have been appeared in the Journal of Financial and Quan ta ve Analysis and the Review of Economics and Sta s cs among others.
