    etting older can be a challenge. Staying on topof your health and fitness goals often becomes

    more difficult as you try to find enough time inthe day to balance the schedules of work and life,and taking care of others. Improper nutrition, jointand muscle soreness and inactivity are additionalchallenges. Here are three simple tips to overcomingthese challenges to continue living a healthy, activelifestyle.

    First, get proper nutrition. Erica Wasser, registerednutritionist and nutrition coach with Life ime -

    Te Healthy Way of Life Company, notes that takinga multivitamin is one of the best things you can dofor your overall nutrition. She also suggests limitingprocessed or packaged foods by making meals that

    will last.

    Instead of cooking one chicken breast, cook three,says Wasser. Add one to a salad, eat one with a sideof steamed vegetables and use the last in a sandwichor wrap.

    Smart snacking is also important. Focus on itemslike Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, almonds, seeds,

    vegetables and hard boiled eggs and try to avoidgranola bars and 100-calorie packs by prewashingand cutting vegetables and fruit and premixing bagsof nuts and seeds.

    Settling on a routine of eating healthy, nutritiousand protein-based meals and snacks will keep yourenergy up and your

    diet balanced for ahealthy, fit life.

    Second, take noticeof what your body istelling you. Are your

    joints sore? Doesyour back hurt fromsitting in a chairmost of the day? Ifso, choose exercisesthat will keep youfit while minimizingthe impact on your

    joints or back and

    improving musclestrength and stamina.

    Check out the localcommunity pool,or stop by a fitnessfacility with pools tosee what type of aqua

    instruction they offer.

    At Life ime, we offer aqua aerobics classes thatfocus on non-weight bearing cardio componentsand stretching, says Wasser. Te buoyancy of waterhelps take pressure off joints and allows everyone toget a great, total body workout. Wasser adds that

    yoga, mat Pilates and reformer Pilates can stretchyour body, reducing back pain and limiting stress onjoints under certain practices.

    Simple chair or balance ball exercises will also helpbuild core muscle strength and stamina withouttaxing your body. Consider these exercises:

    * Sit with good posture and lift your arms above yourhead, at a 12 oclock position. Visualize a clock andgently circle your arms clockwise until they reach the

    12 oclock position again. Reverse the movement.Add soup cans or hand weights for difficulty. Repeateight times.

    * Sit with good posture and tuck your elbows intoyour sides holding your forearms and hands out at a90 degree angle. Slowly rotate your torso to the sideas far as you comfortably can, making sure to keepthe rest of your body stationary. Rotate back to centerand repeat to the other side. Add soup cans or hand

    weights for difficulty. Repeat eight times.

    * Sit with good posture and your feet planted shoulderwidth apart. Slowly raise one leg up as far as you cancomfortably go, or parallel to the floor. Hold for

    three seconds and slowly return to starting position.

    Alternate legs, repeating eight times for each leg.

    If youre used to a more active lifestyle, keep it up.

    Make sure youre taking the proper supplements to

    help your body recover quickly keep adding intensity

    to your workouts so they dont become stale.

    Tird, conquer the inactivity battle. Dont confine

    yourself to your home after a long day. Go to a local

    mall and window shop or people watch with friends.

    Join a local exercise class or start a walking and

    talking group in your neighborhood.

    Its important to remember that being active doesnt

    have to mean completing a total body workout, says

    Wasser. Anything that gets you up and moving can

    significantly add to your health and fitness as you get

    older. Wasser also suggests scheduling and setting

    up daily or weekly activities to ensure youre held

    accountable.

    he decision to downsize a home is oftenbittersweet. Many couples who downsize theirhomes do so after raising a family. A home might

    be filled with memories, but downsizing a homehelps couples save more money, and that financialflexibility often allows men and women to more fully

    enjoy their retirement.

    But in spite of the financial impact ofdownsizing a home, theres more thanjust money at stake for homeownersthinking of downsizing their homes.

    Te following are a handful of factorshomeowners should consider beforedownsizing to a smaller home.

    Real estate market

    Te real estate market can be a sellersfriend or foe. Many sellers have a saleprice in mind when they decide tosell their home, but the real estatemarket can be fickle, so homeownersshould do their research beforeputting their home up for sale. Will

    the current market make it easier foryou to get the most for your home,or will you have to settle for lessthan you prefer? How fast are similarhomes in your area selling? Whenstudying the real estate market, itsalso a good idea to study the marketfor smaller homes. If you plan onmoving into a condominium but themarket is not flush with properties,

    you might end up paying more thanyou want to for your new home,which might negate the savings youcan expect from downsizing.

    Furniture

    When downsizing to a smallerhome, many couples realize theircurrent furniture is unlikely to fitinto a smaller home. Tat meanscouples will have to sell or donatetheir current furniture and then buyall new items for their new home. Ifits been a while since you purchasednew furniture, you might be in forsome sticker shock on your first visitto the furniture store.

    Another thing to consider regardingyour furniture is which items yousimply cant live without. An antiquedinner table might have been the

    centerpiece for your family holidays over the last

    several decades, but theres no guarantee it will fit

    into your smaller home. You may want to pass this

    down to your son or daughter, but thats only possible

    if he or she has the room for it. Before deciding to

    downsize, consider your attachment to certain items

    that you may or may not be able to take with you to

    your new home and the emotional toll that selling

    such items might take if youre left with no other

    options.

    Proximity to family

    When downsizing to a smaller home, many couples

    move out of the suburbs and into cities or towns

    with more ready access to culture and restaurants.

    While that accessibility is great, grandparents may

    find that it comes at the cost of less time with theirgrandchildren. Tats a steep price to pay for doting

    grandparents, and it may also impact your children

    if they frequently rely on grandma and grandpa for

    babysitting. Before downsizing, consider if youre

    willing to move further away from your family. If

    not, you likely can still find a smaller home in close

    proximity to your current home and any nearby

    family members.

    Medical care

    Many older men and women must also consider

    the effect that moving may have on their medical

    care. Downsizing to a home in the country maymake it harder to maintain contact with your current

    physician, and rural areas typically have less medical

    practitioners than more densely populated towns

    and cities. In addition, if you have been visiting the

    same physician for years, you may not want to move

    and have to start all over again with a physician who

    is unfamiliar with your medical history. Consider

    how much maintaining your existing relationship

    with your physician means to you, and if your next

    home will provide the kind of access to medical care

    youre likely to need.

    Determined, vivacious, passionate - a lot ofwords describe Americas estimated 78million baby boomers. Tis spirited group isredefining their golden years, staying active by

    working, traveling and enjoying the great outdoors.Tey know that in order to live life to the fullest,

    they must make their health a priority, and manyare dramatically affecting their personal well-beingwith a few key activities that take 10 minutes orless a day to complete.

    avis Piattoly is a sports dietitian, expert nutritionist

    and co-founder of My Sports Dietitian. He stresses

    that small daily activities can have a cumulative

    effect on health, and therefore encourages baby

    boomers to consistently stay active and eat well.

    He suggests five ways boomers can keep theirhealth on track in 10 minutes each day:

    1. Quick exercises

    Exercise should be enjoyable, so whether it is abrisk walk, strength training or participating ina sport, enjoying what you do will increase yourchance of sticking with that activity, says Piattoly.

    He recommends boomers incorporate strengthtraining into their workout routine to prevent lossof muscle tissues - a concern that increases withaging. Here are three simple exercises:

    Chair squats - Use any chair and perform 10 to12 repetitions standing up and sitting down. oincrease difficulty, hold a light dumbbell to addresistance.

    Wall push-ups - Place arms against a wall andperform 10 to 12 push-ups. If this is too easy, getinto the push-up position on the floor, using yourknees for support.

    Dumbbell curls or soup-can bicep curls - Usea light to moderate weight dumbbell (2 to 10pounds) and perform 10 to 12 bicep curls. Dont

    have dumbbells? Substitute soup cans.2. Nutrient-dense foods

    It takes only minutes to eat a snack or a meal,and whats on your plate fuels your overall health.Piattoly recommends starting with an emphasis onfresh fruits and vegetables.

    As we age, our immune system is not as strong asit once was to fight off infections and illnesses, andfruits and veggies could play a big role in fightingoff heart disease, cancer and age-related diseases,he says

    Next, Piattoly recommends eating lean protein likefarm-raised eggs, extra lean beef or omega-3-richsalmon at every meal. Since we lose muscle mass

    at a rate of around 1 percent per year starting at age35, a diet rich in protein may minimize the rate at

    which we lose muscle, he says.

    Piattoly also suggests a balance of healthy fats.Focus on a mix of healthy fats from sources likeolive oil, avocados, almonds, sunflower seeds,pistachios and natural peanut butter.

    3. Select supplements

    Omega-3 fatty acids, especially fromfish oil, are beneficial for both brain andcardiovascular health, Piattoly says,noting that multiple research studies havedemonstrated that fish oil supplementationis linked with lower levels of beta-amyloid

    protein, which may lower your risk ofAlzheimers disease.

    In addition, research shows fish oilsupplementation can reduce arrhythmiaand sudden cardiac death, improvetriglyceride levels, and increase HDL (goodcholesterol). I recommend taking between2000 and 3000 mg per day of triglyceride-based fish oil.

    Additionally, because between 50 to 75percent of the population has a vitamin Ddeficiency, Piattoly recommends a vitaminD supplement. Optimal levels of vitaminD may reduce your risk for cancer and heart

    disease, as well as improve bone health.Shoot for 2000 IU per day but be sure tospeak with your doctor to determine howmuch you should take, he says.

    4. Embrace technology

    Numerous applications for smartphonesand tablets make it easy to track yourexercise progress, stay motivated and eathealthy. Best of all, most apps are free andonly take a few minutes a day to use.

    Im a big fan of MyFitnessPal, a nice fitnessand nutrition app where you can track youractivity and what you eat. You can visit

    www.myfitnesspal.com or download the

    app to your smartphone.5. Be social

    One of the best things boomers can dois form a social network of friends whoenjoy living a healthier lifestyle, saysPiattoly. Surrounding yourself with activepeople increases your opportunities forhealthy activities. Habits are contagious,so associate with people who enjoy regularexercise.

    he days when professionals would spend theirentire professional lives with a single firm arelargely a thing of the past. In fact, many peoplenot only switch companies multiple times beforeretirement, but some even switch professions beforeretiring.

    As exciting as it can be to pursue a new career, menand women over 50 know that such a decision is not

    without risk. While younger professionals with fewobligations can often handle bumps in the road ontheir way to a second career, older professionals makinga similar move often must consider the potentialeffects such a pursuit might have on their families,finances and futures, including their retirements. Butas difficult as it may seem to pursue a second careerafter your fiftieth birthday, there are steps men and

    women over 50 can take when pursuing a new careerto ensure their second act is as successful as the first.

    * Decide what you want, and not just what you wantto do. Te desire to pursue a second career no doubtstems from more than just dissatisfaction with a

    current profession. Many people switch jobs or evencareers because they find their current careers toodemanding, leaving little time for family or hobbiesthat have nothing to do with work. If what you really

    want is more time at home or more time topursue a particular hobby, then keep this inmind when looking for a second career, andmake sure that career wont demand toomuch of your time. For example, if your goalin finding a new career is to get more work-life balance, then starting your own business,

    which can require long hours at the outset andeven after the business has established itself,might not be for you. But if what you wantis a more challenging career and to be yourown boss, then you will likely find the cost ofachieving that goal, even if that cost is moredemands on your time, is worth it.

    * Assess your skillset. Professionals over 50have lots to offer, but its still important forsuch men and women to make an honestassessment of their skillset and find a careerin which those skills are transferable. Somemen and women might want to pursue asecond career that will make little to no use oftheir skillset, and thats perfectly alright. Butextra schooling might be necessary in suchsituations, and going back to school oftentimesrequires a considerable commitment of bothtime and money. For those who simply wantto put their existing skills to use in a different

    field or environment,assess those skillsand look for lines of

    work in which theyfigure to be especially

    valuable. If thereare any particularaspects of yourcurrent job that you

    want to avoid in thefuture, consider that

    when assessing yourskills and choosinga second career.Even if they dontknow it, establishedprofessionals over50 have manytransferable skills,and such skills canbe aconsiderableasset when pursuinga second career,especially whenthose skills have beenassessed and canbe applied to a newprofession.

    * Make a trial run.Nowhere does it saythat professionals

    cant take a trial run ata second career whilestill fully engagedin their first career.In fact, testing the

    waters before youjump in is a good wayto gauge your interestin a potential secondcareer and how well

    your skillset applies

    to that field. A trial run, which can be conducted byvolunteering with a nonprofit organization or througha part-time job or simply offering your services to acompany free of charge in exchange for a chance tolearn how the business operates, can shed light on theinner workings of a particular industry, showing you

    how things work behind the curtain.esting the waters may reaffirm yourbelief that a certain line of work isfor you, or it might send you backto the drawing board. Either way,its valuable experience that mayreassure you that whatever decision

    you ultimately make is the right one.

    * Dont go it alone. Switching careersafter 50 carries some risk, but itscertainly a risk that many before

    you have been willing to take. Ifyou know any people, be it a friend,family member or former or evencurrent colleague, who has reinvented

    themselves professionally, then speakwith these people and ask for anyadvice they might have. If you know

    you want out of your current career

    but arent quite sure of what you want to do next,those who have faced a similar fork in the road maybe able to help you narrow down your options. Tenotion of changing careers is exciting, and you canexpect your personal and professional confidantes toshare your excitement and be willing to help you in

    any way they can.

    Many investors are taking more control of theirfinancial future by investing in alternativesto the stock market including real estate, land,promissory notes, oil and gas.

    Sue Jensen of New York grew frustrated afterwatching her life savings take a hit year after yearin the stock market. A couple of years ago, afteranother year of less-than-desirable returns, shecouldnt take it anymore. She sought out a way to

    further diversify her investmentsthat wouldnt leave her on thesidelines, watching helplessly.

    Jensen is just one of many Americanswho for years knew only one wayto save for retirement. Growingconcerned that it wouldnt yieldenough money to live comfortably,Jensen sought out alternatives.

    Te good news is that thereare options. You can diversifyyour portfolio by investing yourretirement savings in assets other

    than stocks and bonds. As Jensen and many othershave discovered, the Internal Revenue Serviceallows you to invest your retirement funds in an arrayof assets, including real estate, promissory notes,private placements and tax liens. Te investments

    are made using a self-directed account such as anIRA.

    Self-directed IRA custodians, such as Equity rust,offer options for nearly everyone when it comes tosaving for retirement. Tese options include:

    * Individual retirement accounts: IRA, Roth IRA

    * Small-business accounts: SIMPLE IRA, SEPIRA, Solo 401(k), Roth Solo 401(k)

    * Accounts that allow you to save for other expenses:Coverdell Education Savings Account, HealthSavings Account

    Investing your IRA or other account in alternativesis nothing new. IRS Publication 590 outlines

    the types of investments allowed in a self-directed IRA, including:

    * Real estate - including apartments, singlefamily homes, and duplexes

    * Commercial property, developed orundeveloped land

    * Mortgages/deeds of trust

    * Publicly traded stocks, bonds, mutual funds

    * Private limited partnerships

    * Private stock offerings, private placements

    * Private limited liability companies

    * Secured and unsecured notes

    * Judgments/structured settlements

    * ax sale certificates

    * Car paper

    * Factoring

    * Accounts receivable

    * Commercial paper

    * Equipment leasing

    You should be aware that not every IRAcustodian allows you to self-direct yourfunds. Only qualified self-directed IRAcustodians, such as Equity rust, will allow

    you to invest your retirement funds in realestate and other alternatives to the stockmarket. For those who prefer to continue todiversify with a mix of alternatives and stocksor mutual funds, Equity rust provides thecapability.

    Jensen, an Equity rust client, hasdiversified into tax liens and promissorynotes. In addition to the profits from thoseinvestments, which grow tax-deferred ortax-free in her IRA accounts, she has gainedpeace of mind in knowing all her retirementeggs arent in one basket.

    Self-directed IRA custodians are passive,

    which means they cannot give investmentadvice.
