REFLECTION
Both the reading from the prophet Amos and the gospel narrative pointedly condemn the lifestyles of the rich. It is not wealth itself, but the complacency and the disregard for others that it too frequently generates, that is de-nounced. Biblical covenant is a communal concept. It emerges from a society that insists on mutual responsibility. Today’s readings invite us to consider the covenant bond we have with others. How do we measure up?
The fundamental image of God reveals mercy and compassion. However, we cannot disregard the fact of judgment. Amos pronounces a woe against his own people; Abraham declares that there is an unbridgeable chasm between the saved and the condemned. Paul speaks here of the appearance of the Lord Jesus Christ who will bring judgment when he comes. Judgment will be determined not primarily in terms of our obedience to law, but in view of our fidelity to covenant commitment.
Righteousness is a covenant term. It is a quality of God that is shared with us by means of our covenant bond. Paul admonishes Timothy, and us, to pursue this righteousness, along with devotion, faith, love, patience and gentleness. Some of these virtues focus on our relationship with God, but most of them are directed toward our relationship with others. Those who are less fortu-nate are our sisters and brothers. If we take lightly our covenant obligations and allow them to languish at our gates, we will have only ourselves to blame when we find ourselves facing the harsh judgment of God.

SOCIAL JUSTICE SUNDAY
We celebrate Social Justice Sunday today the 29 September. This year, the Australian Bishops’ Social Justice Statement is titled: ‘Making it Real: Genuine human encounter in our digital world’. It shares Pope Francis’ challenge to us to ‘boldly become citizens of the digital world’. It points out that we are called not just to be inhabitants of this world, but active citizens shaping it.
God of perfect peace, Violence and cruelty can have no part with you. May those who are at peace with one another
hold fast to the good will that unites them; may those who are enemies forget their hatred and be healed.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Moreover, between us and you a great chasm is established…” (Luke 16:25-26) When God created the world He declared that it was good and He gave it to all mankind for us to enjoy. However, over the years we have created a chasm between those who have great gifts and those who do not. In today’s Gospel we see that with our own generosity we must bridge that gap be-tween those who have much and those who have little or we may find ourselves on the wrong side of the chasm in the next life.
SAFEGUARDING - Many of us participated in safeguarding training in 2017 and it is now time to update. It is an easier process this time. We are now required to watch an online video which takes about 30 minutes. The link for the video is www.safeguardingaob.com.au/safeguarding-training.html For anybody who cannot access this at home
we will be offering it after each Mass next weekend of 5th and 6th October. Once it has been viewed a form needs to be completed and signed by Fr Thomas, Cathy or Donna to con-firm you work as a volunteer in our parish.
