SPRING 2013 Weird year all round, weather all over the place as are rallies in 2013. Some events filling up within days, others with near capacity levels, whilst some have been cancelled due to poor entries. The one constant is that Border Motor Club members are out and about whether competing, marshalling, spectating or organising great events. If you have any ideas of what you would like to see in this publication, please contact the EDITOR. The club website is updated regularly; check it out for further information and news. I don’t know what’s coming up for this weekend, but it certainly won’t be as exciting as last weekend, when along with most of Border I was helping on the Alan Healy Memorial Rally at Cadwell. Helped by James Bushby, I was running the passage check after each stage, collecting time cards and giving each crew their re-start time for the next stage. I only saw about 90 seconds of competition, but I had a fabulous day’s sport; so (in the few minutes when I wasn’t doing anything,) I wondered why marshalling a rally control is so much fun. Rallying can be a superbly spectacular sport to watch, with cars sliding about as drivers struggle to keep control at the limits of adhesion; but what the sport is really about, at heart, is two guys working together to try and get their machine down the course quicker than everybody else, and it’s when you work with the crews that you get the full experience. They say that smell is a large part of emotion. Well in a rally car you get the lot; hot engines, burning brakes and clutches, sweat and relief. One of the organising team at one point swore he could smell fear, but that’s more common at arrival and start (honest). Another interesting thing was seeing how crews did their job during the day. The basic task was handing in the time card for the stage just done, then me signing on a restart time for the next stage on the next card. Most got this sorted after the first couple of stages, (the smart ones right at the beginning), but some never got it all day! Many co-drivers were using hardboard map boards to hold stage plans, but only one, (Roy Bell), had thought through the safety implications and was using corrugated cardboard. One crew actually had pace notes; surely not needed at Cadwell, and more likely to slow them down I would have thought.? But the best part of the day was being part of the team to make it all happen. All of the organising team had worked hard beforehand to make the event the success it was; some very hard indeed. Organising an event is one of the most challenging things in rallying, but it is hugely satisfying. Even more so, on the day, is being part of a large team of marshals and officials, all working hard to make sure they do their job as well as possible. Cadwell, being so compact, is brilliant for this, as everyone can see it all happening and feel part of it all. Everyone involved put in maximum effort, and the result was a superb event. Have I really got to wait another year until the next one?

TJS SELF DRIVE

ALAN HEALY MEMORIAL CADWELL PARK STAGES Sunday 7th April 2013

This year John Savage secured a title sponsor for the event, TJS SELF DRIVE, a company headed by a fellow motorsport competitor, Terry Sayles. Well done John.

With the organisational side being dealt with in 3 meetings during the months leading up to rally, the physical effort of laying out the venue, and the logistical challenge of getting more than a 100 marshals on post were the next problems to be tackled. On the Saturday before the event a track day precluded any circuit work before 5:00 pm and the stewards had asked for another chicane to be put in before the merge at Chris’s curve for the morning stages which meant the setting up crew worked hard and long into the night, some finishing around 11:00. Come Sunday and on what was the warmest and sunniest day of the year so far (Thanks for putting a good word in Alan,) 69 crews out of the 78 originally entered started the event, and were rewarded with a great day’s rallying. The use of the holding area meant more variety than last year, and together with altered stage starts, more mileage was able to be offered. From the comments on the British rally forum to others received verbally, and by email, competitors thoroughly enjoyed the event, with many crews wanting to come back next year. Excerpts below from the email sent by Clerk of the Course Tony Cope to the other members of the organising team sums up an event Border Motor Club members can be proud to have been associated with: Am sure Alan is watching with a smug smile on his face …… Long but satisfying day for all yesterday …… I thought the event ran extremely well and all can be congratulated for an excellent and slickly run rally, All the pre-planning and thought came to fruition and was a credit to everyone involved. We still finished half an hour earlier than planned – And had I got the cars up to the start of SS6 sooner we would not have had as big a gap at the turn round – but I thought we would need the whole 40 minutes instead of the 20 it took !!!!! Then we could have finished even sooner ….. But small issue in the scheme of things and all should be well satisfied with an excellent event. MSA meets with tyre companies to chart future direction for gravel rally tyres This is a move towards a definitive list of acceptable tyres for use in the sport, as part of the governing body’s commitment to reducing motor sport’s environmental impact. A meeting of the reconvened Stage Rally Tyre Working Group in February with representatives from DMACK, Dunlop, Hankook, Michelin, Pirelli, Protyre and Yokohama, with only Kumho unable to attend due to prior testing commitments. “It was a really excellent first meeting,” said Mike Broad, who is now chairing the Working Group. “We have been talking around this subject for a number of years, but I feel that we started to make proper progress this week. All the manufacturers agreed to submit details of their construction in time for our next meeting, so we can then begin the process of establishing a consensus for the direction of travel for the development of stage rally tyres. “We are grateful for everyone’s constructive input and would like to reaffirm that any other manufacturers not currently represented on the group should get in touch.”

Cadwell Park footbridge A new 40m steel bridge which links the paddock with the pit straight, crossing two sections of the circuit from The Run to Coppice and the return leg between Mansfield and the legendary Mountain has been installed during the winter and will be in use during 2013. This will enable fans to switch viewing spots between the start line and other areas of the race course, and is located in a position that does not obstruct spectator views. Competitors on the rally were probably to busy to notice it! Group B memories. Thirty years ago the dominance by Audi in rallying was challenged by Peugeot when the company introduced the 205 T16, a silhouette of the 205 road car launched at the same time, but a completely different animal underneath the Kevlar panels, with a steel space frame/monocoque chassis, mid-mount turbo charged engine, and of course four wheel drive. The original car had around 350 BHP, but the handling characteristics with the transverse engine combined with horrendous turbo lag meant the first public outing in 1983 was forgettable. However revisions and hours of testing meant that for 1984 these problems were resolved. On the Corsican Rally Ari Vatanen started slowly, but then unleashed the might ‘lion’, and by the end of the day had a substantial lead, but later fell off the road in tricky wet conditions. On the next rally in Greece the car led again, but the heat and dust unearthed further problems. Upon their return Vatanen won the three rallies he contested, and finished 4th in the championship. Timo Salonen was Vatanen’s new team mate for 1985, and the other teams realised the sport had moved on, when Vatanen took three straight wins, however retirements then shifted the balance in favour of Salonen, and when Vatanen rolled out, suffering massive injuries after his seat broke, the championship was his for the taking, with the once dominant Audi taking only one win all year.

Juha Kankkunen replaced the injured Vatanen for 1986, and gave Peugeot a second win in the championship, but this was to be the last year for these awesome machines. A competitor slid off the road into spectators, injuring thirty-one people and killing three on the Portuguese rally, and then Henri Toivonen and co-driver Sergio Cresto were killed in a crash on the Corsican Rally, when their car slid off the road and burst into flames. The FIA immediately banned Group B cars for 1987.

The Evo 2 with the huge, adjustable rear wing, front splitters and over 500 BHP, debuted on the Corsica Rally in 1985. To see what the fuss was all about click HERE

Mini Midlands Rally With the cancellation of the 2 day event on the 21st 7 22nd June, the organising club are now offering a one day event at MIRA. See website for further information LINK MSA confirms Nick Bunting as new Chief Executive The Motor Sports Association has confirmed Nick Bunting as the successor to Colin Hilton, from the 20 May 2013. Nick brings with him a wealth of sporting experience which will be of great value to the sport. Over twelve years' top-level experience with the Rugby Football Union as its Chief Operating Officer and Director of Sports Coach UK and the Sport & Recreation Alliance and is currently the Chief Executive of the Prince's Initiative for Mature Enterprise. MSA Chairman Alan Gow commented “Nick has some very big shoes to fill and I would like to pay tribute to the extraordinary achievements of Colin Hilton in the past 12 years; the MSA is unrecognisable from the organisation that he took over in 2001 and that is largely down to his leadership. Nick inherits a well-run, financially sound organisation that sits at the heart of British motor sport and which takes a central and active role in the development of the sport. The whole sport owes Colin a significant debt of gratitude and we wish him a well-deserved retirement.” Rallying at Manby The Opposite Lock Rally organised by Slaithwaite MC will take place at this venue on the 20th July. The organisers have met with the new owner and toured the site. Due to the uncertainty surrounding events here in 2013 this event was dropped from the ANEMMC championship, but is a round of the EMAMC one. Hyundai i20 WRC Another manufacturer has committed to the World Rally championship for 2014, and Hyundai could possibly debut the car on Rally GB this year. Further key appointments have been made since the appointment of Team Principal Michel Nandan in January." Photograph By Beren27 (Own work) LINK to original RAC Rally Championship A championship run over seven gravel rallies in England, Scotland and Wales and organised by the same team which runs the very successful Roger Albert Clark rally has been created following competitor requests for a ‘well-run, friendly, sporting series that is accessible and affordable to as many competitors as possible.’ The championship caters for cars from MSA historic Categories 1to 3 as well as cars prepared to FIA Appendix K. Additional classes accommodate cars built up to the end of 1986 as well as other pre ’87 cars that do not fully comply with historic regulations. To keep cost down are all one day events and management/ chase cars are banned. The bad weather saw 2 of the first 3 events rescheduled, but the one that did run, the Mid Wales Stages, attracted huge numbers of spectators. The Tour of Hamsterley is the next event with a capacity entry, including with over 60 historic cars. Further information available HERE WRC Rallying on British TV ITV4 has picked up the UK rights to screen highlights of the 2013 World Rally Championship, which will be broadcast on the Tuesday following each event with a repeat showing on Saturday mornings. The new ITV deal ensures the championship’s return to British television as well as guaranteed free-to-air coverage for the rest of the season. Each one-hour show will feature a comprehensive round-up of each leg of every round, plus driver interviews and reports from all the key stages. There is also expected to be extended coverage of the final round of the championship, Wales Rally GB, on November 15-17. Stage Rally Championship 2013 Please be aware of the following: - The championship is open to all fully paid up members of Border Motor Club. Competitors can nominate any event they compete on to be a round and both drivers and co-drivers score points based on their class finishing position on any nominated event, with the best 4 scores counting towards the overall championship. 1st in Class - 20 points 2nd in Class - 19 points 3rd in Class - 18 points and so on up to 19th in Class 2 points 20th or less in class and starting an event 1 point

NOTE: Results are based on the finish in the class entered on an event and are irrespective of any awards received. It is the competitor’s responsibility to make sure that the Stage Rally Coordinator is informed of your nominated events and that he receives a copy of the results within 2 weeks* of the event running. *So that new members have the chance to put their results into the table should they want to, this is altered to the end of April. Differing fortunes for the various teams as can be seen from the above results. Charlie Stephens & Paul Stephens dominated class A, nearly 3 and ½ minutes in front of second in their class. A fantastic result for a young driver in his first senior rally. Clive Hitchman/Jeremy Griffiths finished one place below them. Last years winner Roger Duckworth, this time with Mark Broomfield in the navigator’s seat, had electrical problems on SS2, but continued and set 7 fastest times on the 8 stages he completed. Another leading crew Robert Swann/Darren Garrod, went straight on at the approach to Barn on SS2, and could not continue. Graig Pennington/Wayne Priest benefitted from these retirements and finished second 4WD car. Others to suffer misfortune on the event were Jay Stanley/Paul Williams who were as high a 7th O/A before a broken drive shaft put them out, and Hugh Peat/Robert Stevens, who had problems on SS1, but continued to get better acquainted with the Focus 4x4.

Sean Bailey/Nigel Wetton were top Border pairing; they tied on time with Alan Oldfield/Gary Green, but missed out of a top ten position, as unfortunately they were slower on the first stage. Late entrants Mark & Ed Bentley finished a place behind them, seven seconds in arrears. David & Jayne Robinson could not repeat last years 10th O/A finish, but still had a good run in their fairly standard Impreza.

The father and son crew of Colin & Nigel Barber saw Nigel swapping over to the co-drivers seat for the day. Colin hadn’t driven for a couple of years, but having competed on many of the past Cadwell rallies, wanted another go. They battled all day with six other Border MC crews and by SS10 had increased the pace to climb away from Chris Bellamy/Ashlie Thorpe, Mel Hudson/Roy Bell, Trevor & Roger Silcock, David Greenbank/Allister Wells and Rhys Yates/Steve Hallmark, who finished in that order. John Wood/James Ducker were in this battle at the start and finish of the event. Stage 2 (A favourite stage for problems it seems), saw them plummet down the order with a broken driveshaft, but a spirited drive on the rest of the stages saw the crew slot in between Mel/Roy and Trev/Roger at the finish of the event.

Royston Carey/Bridge Carey and Alan Thistlethwaite had problems on SS1, which resulted in some damage to their cars, and meant they had to play catch up all day. Royston & Bridge were never out of the top ten fastest times on the rest of the event, and would have been chasing a class win if not for the error. They ended up just behind Brian Maguire/David Bailey, who in turn were only 3 seconds adrift of Mike Cartwright/Steve Warrington.

Spare a thought for Chris & Phil Woodcock. Originally Phil was co-driving for Phil Rowland in the BMW E36, but after a winter engine rebuild, the ECU could not be mapped in time for the event, so the multi driven Saxo was brought out earlier than expected for them. Phil Rowland was then taken ill, so Chris stepped into the driver’s seat. After working late Friday and all day Saturday their hard work came to a sudden end on SS2. The car was too badly damaged to continue, but the brothers are none the worse for wear after their accident, and the car can be repaired.
