Firstly I would like to take the time to thank Nick for his marathon stint as Border’s chairman. We have tried to work it out and can’t properly, but it is in excess of 20 years! So on that note, from me, the rest of the committee & the club, many thanks for all your hard work and effort Nick! As most of you know, I have been coming to the club now for over 30 years, ever since dad used to take me with him over to the Finningley clubhouse when I was about 9 or 10 years old, and I used to pull pints behind the bar! I have seen a lot happen with the club over the years, moving from the old clubhouse, a lot of marshalling and competing, members coming and going and of course the worst, losing my dear dad (‘El Presidente’). I must confess that I did consider leaving the club after dad passed away, but I sat back and thought about all the great times we had and I knew he would want me to carry on, hence back in at the deep end rejoining the committee and now 4 years on into the chairman’s spot. I feel that we have a very strong motor club now, with a healthy membership and great reputation for putting on some good events such as the classic rally and the Alan Healy Memorial Cadwell Park Stages Rally, now into its third year. I know dad would be pleased how the club is doing now and so, on his behalf, well done everyone and keep up the good work. That’s it for me for now I hope to see you at the next meeting. Jonathan

New committee following AGM in November Chairman – Jonathan Healy Vice-Chairman – Blair Bushby Secretary – Dennis Sanford Competition Secretary – Blair Bushby Membership Secretary – Janine McKinsley Treasurer – Paul Rhodes Chief Marshal – Andy Hill Press & Publicity – John Savage News Letter Editor & Webmaster – Roy Bell 12 Car Co-ordinator – Roy Bell Stage Rally Co-ordinator – Paul Moran Other committee members are Mark Johnson, Paul Laythorpe, John Martin, Steve Hill, Adrian Woodcock & Chris Woodcock. Thanks were given to Nick Leuchars who stood down as Chairman, and from the committee, for his numerous years service to the club (Even Nick couldn’t remember how long it had actually been) and the professional way he ran the meetings to ensure the club was functioning correctly. The Bruce Robinson Rally – 1st / 2nd February Lincoln MC & CC offer 140 miles on maps 121 and 122, including around 15 miles of good quality whites, some of which will be run as special tests. Further details at www.brucerobinsonrally.co.uk

Nick Bunting leaves after only six months in charge following Colin Hilton’s retirement. “Nick was recruited to undertake a specific transitional role to prepare the MSA for future transformation,” said Alan Gow, MSA Chairman. “He has undertaken an internal restructure of the staff and functional departments, implemented a new IT system, reviewed our business structures and begun the establishment of a customer-focused culture, and also reviewed the strategic opportunities for the MSA’s future in such areas as participant development, championship structures, regulations and marketing and communications. He has successfully laid out the pathway for this transition and identified that a specific style of leadership is required to achieve this. Therefore, by mutual consent, he has decided not to take up the possibility of the continued role as MSA Chief Executive.

Rallycross returns to Blyton Park

The confirmed 2014 BTRDA Clubmans Rallycross calendar is as follows: - Round 1 Feb 9th Blyton Round 2 March 9th Blyton Round 3 June 7th Pembrey Round 4 June 8th Pembrey Round 5 August 17th Pembrey Round 6 November 16th Croft Also BTRDA Rallycross Trophy November 30th Blyton Mallory Park Since the last publication of this magazine Mallory Park (Motorsport) Limited (MPML) has gone into liquidation, which resulted in the closure of the circuit in Leicestershire. The good news is that new owners Stuart Hicken, owner of the Buildbase BMW BSB team, and Eddie Roberts are to take over day-to-day running of the venue. The pair, who have formed a jointly-owned company, Real Motorsport Limited, commented: “We realise that there is a lot of bridge building to be done with the local community, but Mallory Park has been here for a long time and we are hopeful that - with understanding all round - it will have a long and successful future. We would like to thank circuit owner Chris Meek (The rally driver is spelt ‘Meeke’ before anybody asks – Ed) for giving us the opportunity of re-establishing the venue and also Hinckley & Bosworth Borough Council for advice regarding noise issues and the community". The duo will now start work to get the circuit into shape for the forthcoming season, planning to stage their first race meeting in spring, together with a programme of practice and track hire days. What do you need the following for? 81 hotel nights, 119 team mates, 50 tonnes of cargo, 700 tyres, 5000 cable ties, 500 cereal bars and 50 packets of dried apricots. Well if you are Richard Tuthill and running a fleet of 18 Porsches on the East African Safari Classic, these are just some of the essentials required for the 2,500-mile route. Sebastien Loeb After competing on his last world rally in France this year, which unfortunately did not go to plan as he rolled out of the event, Sebastien Loeb has left a lasting legacy of statistics, which may never be surpassed. In a career spanning 15 years he was world champion 9 times, with just 22 retirements from 169 starts, and also has records for most wins, podium finishes and stage wins. Seb 2 is now at the top of the leader board as Sebastien Ogier has shown he is a worthy world champion this year, but can he, or anybody else even match, never mind beat, any of them? One rally less at Blyton Park Due to the date restrictions placed on the venue for rallying, Lindholme Motor Sports Club have decided to move their rally to Melbourne Airfield, and back to a September date for 2014, the 7th. Got stopped by the Police as part of their Christmas drink driving campaign. The officer asked, “How many drinks have you had in the last 24 hours?” Apparently the correct answer isn't “Not enough to take you home.”

It is again time for me to welcome everyone to “The Hostess Restaurant” for our Association Annual Dinner and Awards Night. This as many of you will now be aware is my last time of organising this evening after 15 years (time fly’s) For next year your Association will be splitting the jobs of Awards Secretary and that of Dinner Organiser, I shall continue as Awards Secretary and the Dinner will be organised by Mrs. Julia Hughes whom I took over from all those years ago. Julia is a very capable person and I am sure she will continue to put together a very successful evening for everyone. I would very much like to thank Mr. and Mrs. Walker and their staff at “The Hostess” for all their help and advice over the years, always there to see the smooth running of the event and to help with the serving of the excellent food always served, Mr. and Mrs. Walker a very special thank you. Again this year we are holding the price at £25 each, this will be five years at this price. Also we shall again have the restaurant set out in the round table format, which was so well received last year. Please don’t leave booking to the last minute as using round tables does put a smaller limit on numbers that we can seat in the restaurant there will also be entertainment during the evening. Finally I would like to thank everyone for supporting the Association over the years and again look forward to seeing you on the 18th January. I wish you a Very Merry Christmas and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year and a very successful year in motorsport. Dennis Turner – EMAMC Awards Secretary.

EVENT REPORTS

Harold Palin Memorial Stages, Fulbeck, 6th October – Paul Rhodes 22nd O/A 17th in class. Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 44th O/A 5th in class Paul was navigating for Gary Carver in a Mazda 323, whilst Phil n’ Phil were out for the first time 328 engine installed, after having all sorts of problems getting the mapping correct. Apart from a maximum on SS3 they improved, getting more and more used to the power available. The Adgespeed Stages Rally, Three Sisters Race Circuit, 13th October - Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 29th O/A 11th in class Never having competed there before, after the 12 short twisty stages the crew rated the venue, and would return. In with the 4WD cars class wise. Hall Trophy Rally, Blyton Park, 20th November – James Ducker 5th O/A 4th in class. Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 14th O/A 4th in class. John Savage/Paul Rhodes 26th O/A 1st in class. Charlie & Paul Stephens retired. The first of 2 events to be held here in quick succession, and part of the ‘Blyton Challenge’ series, James Ducker was navigating for Dave Campling in the beautifully prepared Escort Cosworth WRC, and had a clean run apart from a glitch on SS4. The two Phil’s had a good day and were beginning to see the potential of the car. John and Paul were never challenged for the class 1 lead, as Charlie & Paul retired at the end of the first stage. Running with a map setting for forged pistons doesn’t do much for standard Micra ones, all 4 were cream crackered.

Lincoln Green Stages Rally, Blyton Park, 7th December – Most of Border MC competitors Varying fortunes for the crews, but at least the weather was good, damp tarmac to start with, then drying out through the day. Quick turn round of the stages meant a finish before spotlights were needed. James Ducker was again co-driving for Dave Campling, and up to second after SS2, but everything was not well with the transmission electronics, which prompted a spin and dropped the crew down the order. They recovered to finish 4th O/A 3rd in class, one place higher than last time, with a slight repair needed to the rear left quarter, after the electronics malfunctioned again.

Page 12: Border Lines Winter 2013

Phil Rowland/ Phil Woodcock finished 18th O/A 4th in class, after having to let the last class 4 award go to the E36 compact version of Mike Bayliss/Peter Dawson, despite chasing them hard all day. Charlie & Paul Stephens were behind John Savage /Paul Rhodes for the first 2 stages, but with the Mini misfiring and cutting out on SS3, and then the same thing happening on SS4 so they came in after only one lap, the Micra dominated proceedings, finishing 33rd O/A and over 3 minutes in front of the next in class. John & Paul traced the fault to the ignition switch, and after repairs didn’t have another problem, but too much time was lost to climb back up the leader board. Chris Woodcock recruited Craig Simkiss as a co-driver, and after a fantastic first stage which saw them 10th O/A (That’s what the official results show) had all sorts of problems from a collapsed wheel bearing to demolishing the front end of the newly repaired Saxo on SS7, and not being happy with that, attacking scenery again on the last stage. Both of the crew had a great time by the grins of their faces throughout the day. Jeremy Griffiths in his nova set consistent times throughout the day, apart from losing around 2 minutes on SS2 to end up 40th O/A, 11th in class. Mel Hudson/Roy Bell were using the event as a test for the new rally car, a Subaru Impreza, and had a few spins trying things out, but were pleased to get quicker through the day. Mel forgot he was driving a 4WD not a RWD to start with and said in the lunch break "I keep dipping the clutch to get the back end out, but the front end won't let me" A puncture meant a maximum on one stage, and after checking the jack was OK for use before the event it might have been a good idea to see if there was also a wheel brace present as well!
