First we had the go-karting at Grimsby which was a great success I must say, very well attended and what a great venue. For all those who could not make it, it’s well worth a trip, however it was a very quick lesson for those of us who thought they were still 20! We are not! As I jumped (sorry crawled out!) of the kart after the first practice session it hit me, you are not that young anymore. As that thought was running through my mind I quickly remembered why dad always used to watch me whenever we went. After that I’m sure I could hear him faintly laughing at me every time I crawled out of it! Anyway a great night was had by all. Next it was off to Cadwell and what a weekend. After a good Saturday setting up it was home to bed for what seemed like 20 mins sleep, then back again for the rally. After a very wet stage one the pace soon quickened, with a couple of accidents on stage 2 which caused some delay, but with slick movement by of the all the team we were soon back on track and all 10 stages were run. Thanks to all the organising team, officials and competitors for making it another successful rally. Please keep any eye on the club website for all future events and activities. That’s it for me for now; I hope to see you all at the next meeting. Jonathan

Hi folks, welcome and what a busy start its been to 2014. First we had the go-karting at Grimsby which was a great success I must say, very well attended and what a great venue. For all those who could not make it, it’s well worth a trip, however it was a very quick lesson for those of us who thought they were still 20! We are not! TJS SELF DRIVE ALAN HEALY MEMORIAL CADWELL PARK STAGES

Sunday 6th April 2014

The third rally for the club at this venue, and after two sunny years the wet start did not bode well, but as it was pointed out better to get everything set up in the dry, and after a couple of stages the rain had stopped. Unfortunately the damp conditions led to two stoppages on stage two, which put the schedule back by around an hour, so thanks to those who assisted with the slick turn round of the stages which meant that all 10 stages ran. With people needing seat time for the MSA National Tarmac Championship there was an excellent entry list, and let’s hope these crews were impressed enough with our event to want to return. Lots and lots of work done by many people before, during and after the event. Many thanks to all those who were there on Saturday and stayed behind on Sunday night to set up/dismantle the stage, your help was invaluable to the organising team, and finally great work by Olly Banton on the JCB, which meant the major junctions with the tyre stacks were completed a lot quicker this year. There will be a booklet on the website with more information, photographs and quotes. TSW Border Classic - May 11th Willing/unwilling volunteers required, all sorts of jobs. Contact John Savage 07742091044 MSA appoints Rob Jones as Chief Executive Rob Jones, who has held the position of Acting Chief Executive since October 2013, has been given the position permanently. Jones, who is a former rally co-driver & driver, and circuit racer, joined the MSA as General Secretary in 2006 after practising as a solicitor, is also President of the Ethics Commission of the world governing body, the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile. Jones said: “This is a huge privilege and a great responsibility. I saw my first road rally when I was 17 and realised then that I wanted to be part of this sport, but could never have imagined that I would one day be appointed as CEO of one of the most respected motor sport governing bodies in the world. It is difficult to explain what this means for someone whose happiest memories are in this sport, whether as a marshal or a competitor. There is so much going on currently; so much for UK motor sport to be excited about: the closed roads consultation; the significant growth of interest in grass roots motor sport; and additional initiatives to benefit the clubs and competitors. For me, the essence of this sport is safe and affordable enjoyment and I look forward to playing my part in shaping its future for the benefit of everyone involved.”

MSA Newcomer's Prize Draw As part of the MSA’s Year of the Newcomer, the Newcomer’s Prize Draw is running for a second year, offering a pair of tickets to Wales Rally GB. Anyone who has started out in motor sport either as a competitor or volunteer since January 2013 is eligible to enter. Jess Fack, MSA Development Manager, said: “All you have to do is send us an account of your first experiences in motor sport, explaining how you felt, what you did and how you got on, preferably along with a picture of you in action.” Entries should run to no more than 500 words and must be emailed to [email protected] by 30 September 2014. Entries may also feature in future editions of the MSA newsletter.

Bickerton Skoda Hallamshire Stages, Barkston Heath 4th May. EVENT CANCELLED Sheffield & Hallamshire Motor Club has received notification from the RAF that their licence to run events at RAF Barkston Heath has been revoked due to a change in operational policy. The club is seeking also now having to seek a new venue for the Centenary Stages which runs in August Further information available on their website www.sheffieldandhallamshiremc.co.uk Spectators on events One of regular Motorsport News contributors, John Fife wrote an interesting piece about the care and control of spectators on forest rallies. Following a fatal accident in 2013 on the Snowman Rally clubs across the country took note and looked closely at the spectator areas on their events, which in some cases resulted in reduced access due to lack of suitable places to view from and areas for parking vehicles. He sees the big problem as the casual spectator who knows very little about the sport and has to be educated, informed and guided, sometimes on an event which has limited resources, so cannot handle the volume. This can lead to people wandering off to find their own spot. Even some of the hardened fans think they know best, and can roam around a venue, standing where they want, whom a casual spectator may follow, thinking they know what they are doing. Charging for access to the forest, would burden organisers with even more rules and regulations regarding duty of care and health & safety, so by charging for car parking only, spectators can hopefully be guided to safe vantage points, and rallying will remain one of the last great free sports. On the Snowman Rally this year there were a few extra interested bystanders from the Forestry Commission. Building up to the event the Commission’s Health & Safety Advisor for Scotland, England and Wales had been in regular contact with the organising club, and was in one of the course cars on the event, with a FC employee present at each spectator area. The H & S advisor was helpful and supportive, rather than obstructive, but plans to visit more rallies in preparation for submitting a report to the senior members of the Forestry commission. John wants all rally enthusiasts to be aware of this and realise that everybody needs to assume responsibility not just for their own actions, but for those around them, as if spectators cannot be controlled, the access gates to the forest may be locked and closed to rallying. Rally of the Midlands, June 20/21st After being cancelled in 2013 due to problems with some of the proposed stages, and having to run a multi-use rally at MIRA, this year sees a return to Mallory Park, after the new owners of the venue approached the organisers. In addition to Mallory Park the all sealed surface event will use MIRA will once again, as well as Arbury Hill and Merevale Hall. Scrutineering will be on Friday, with the rally on Saturday. Clerk of the course, Richard Hinton, said they are looking for 80 – 90 cars to enter the event, have reduced the road mileage from previous years, and are in talks with various championships. Special Stage Rally Review The footage from the TJS SELF DRIVE Alan Healy Memorial Cadwell Park Rally is scheduled to be shown as part the Special Stage Extra show on Motors TV on the Wednesday 7th May at 7:25pm www.motorstv.com

Sunderland to host 2014 Roger Albert Clark Rally A new look to the 2014 event with the rally start, finish and HQ all based in Sunderland. The route will make extensive use of the Kielder forest complex and will take in several stages that are completely new to the event in a total competitive route of up to 190 stage miles. The is being supported by Sunderland Live, the events arm of Sunderland City Council, and has allowed rally manager Colin Heppenstall to give the rally a fresh new look. Based around the Seaburn Leisure Centre, which will provide the HQ, scrutineering, documentation and prize-giving, There will also be spectacular spectator stage at the Herrington Country Park. The format of the rally will continue, starting with several stages in the darkness of Friday evening before two very full days of rallying on Saturday and Sunday. Initial route plans include over 90 stage miles on Saturday with a route heading as far west as Kershope. Sunday’s stages will be centred on the main Kielder complex before the finish in Sunderland from around 6pm. “This is the major refresh I wanted to give the event,” said Heppenstall. “We’ve always moved the host city on a regular basis and the time was right to refresh. This should deliver the fresh challenge that the competitors wanted. We are very grateful to everyone involved at Sunderland for their enthusiastic co-operation and for their eagerness to welcome the event to Sunderland.” Heppenstall says that his target is 190 stage miles, with all the gravel miles contained within the Kielder complex. He is also working to hold the entry fee at 2013 levels despite a 20% increase in competitive mileage. Full stage details will be published in two weeks time. For more details see the event website www.rogeralbertclarkrally.org Staging a Forest Rally It is estimated that a one day 45 mile rally costs between £45,000 and £50,000 to organise, which means that a 100 cars or more can be needed to get to a break even point, with even the smallest difference in numbers putting the event into profit or a loss. With a lot of costs up front, as the organisers of border’s event know, it can mean that a club suffers financially should they have to cancel the rally, and is why organisers want to know in plenty of time how many crews have entered, and offer not to bank any monies until close to the rally date. So please remember that up and down the country organisers are giving up hours of their own free time to ensure competitors have events to partake in, and put your entry in as soon as you can. Go-karting night Seven teams ventured to Grimsby in March to participate in an endurance event, and by some of the comments received some club members were either fitter or younger, or a combination of both. 12 Car Rally Championship 2013 – 2014 Despite altering the regulations to allow club members to compete on other club’s events, there have been no crews out in 2013/2014. So there will be no trophies presented at the awards night, and the committee will revue whether it is worth putting on a championship for 2014/2015. Border Stage Rally Championship results 2014

EVENT REPORTS

Riponian Stages Rally, N. Yorkshire, 9th February – James Ducker 15th O/A 5th in class. Mark Johnson/Roy Bell start line SS3 & SS8 Jim jumped from his normal seat alongside Dave Campling to navigate for James Sparrow in a WRC Subaru Impreza. This would be his first forest event so it was somewhat a baptism of fire. Certainly at Riccal Dale he looked a bit wide-eyed. James is also more used to tarmac, and so with very slippery conditions throughout the event they did well to stop on the road, most of the time, and finish. Cars on the second time through showed plenty of battle scars, with one car having rolled, and the crew donning goggles, and the front and rear screens removed. Made it easy to sign the time card anyway.

Jack Neal Memorial Rally, Blyton Park, 22nd February - Phil Rowland/Phil Woodcock 11th O/A 4th in class. Mel Hudson/Roy Bell 24th O/A 12th in class. Charlie and Paul Stephens 30th O/A 3rd in class. Phil n’ Phil had a good day, but were gutted to have missed a top ten finish by 1 second. Mel & Roy had a brake pipe burst on the finish at SS2 as can be seen in the photograph below (At least there was an emergency exit,) and then a misfire until the final two stages, where a change of plugs finally saw the Impreza going a lot better. Class 1 was an all Micra affair, but it was not to be Charlie & Paul’s day as Simon Mauger took the top spot, with an impressive 7th O/A

Flying Fortress Stages Rally, Grafton Underwood, 16th March – James Ducker retired. Nigel Barber/Stuart Popplewell retired Fine weather for the third running of this event, where they seem to keep finding new roads in the undergrowth, and developing the stages year on year. Jim navigated for another of the Sparrow family, Luke, for this event, but suffered from a lack of brakes on SS6 and could not continue. First time out for Nigel & Stuart in the re-prepared Astra, and on SS2, first stage was cancelled due to a car being on fire, were just outside the top ten and third in class. On the next stage a rear stub axle broke, pitching them into a spin. After being recovered they changed the part, and continued for fun on the afternoon stages.

TJS SELF DRIVE Alan Healy Memorial Cadwell Park Stages Rally, 6th April – See below As well as the regulars some competitors joined on the day, so there were 17 crews out with Border Motor Clubs members in one or both of the seats. The best of these were Royston & Bridge Carey who couldn’t quite match their 2nd O/A at Brands Hatch earlier this year, but still had a fantastic result against the more powerful machinery, and were in a day long battle with Martin Hodgson/Tony Jones. They were affected by the stoppage caused by Dave Turnbull crashing, and awarded a notional time, which meant were playing catch up for the rest of the event, but only finished 4 seconds off the class win.

Jim Ducker continued with his seat hopping, this time navigating for John Wood in his newly acquired Impreza, which he purchased after being frustrated with not finishing an event in his previous car for some time. With Roy Bell on the organising team Mel Hudson had Chris Woodcock in the left hand seat, but they were left spectating after SS4. Another navigating Woodcock, Phil, was with Phil Rowland and they finished with their usual crowd pleasing display along the way in the BMW. Colin Barber, a regular competitor with this brother Martin at Cadwell when South Bank MC ran events here in the 80’s & 90’s, was navigated by son Nigel, using Nigel’s recently re-prepared car. Colin thinks this will be the last year he competes, others think otherwise. Clive Hitchman/Jeremy Griffiths were debuting a newly acquired BMW, and were coming to terms with the driving wheels being at the ‘wrong end’ after competing in a Nova for so long.
