Boss Hog® frac plugs are short, fast and strong. More than 35,000 Boss Hog plugs have been run without presets, installed without damaging the casing, and have held pressures exceeding 10,000 psi during frac stage treatments.

Designed and Manufactured for Speed and Reliability During Frac Operations

The Downhole Technology™ Boss Hog® frac plug delivers a step-change in composite plug performance. Half the length and weight of most competitive plugs, they can be run at twice the speed and drilled out in less than half the time of other composites while still returning small-sized debris. Boss Hog plugs also require significantly less water volume during pumpdown, and only one pump truck is needed, which means savings between $2,000 and $4,000 per day and in some conditions reducing the need to upgrade to higher-pressure iron. With these advantages, operators have saved tens of thousands of dollars per well by switching to Boss Hog frac plugs.

Engineered for Lowest Total Cost of Operations

Downhole Technology’s composite plugs represent a total reengineering of plug design and construction. Instead of making incremental improvements on legacy plug designs from the 1990s, Downhole Technology engineered Boss Hog plugs from the ground up to eliminate problems inherent with older-generation composite plugs, such as slow running speeds, excessive water use, premature setting, failure under pressure and long drillout times. The Boss Hog plug’s design eliminates the shortcomings of competitive plugs in all these areas to achieve the lowest total cost of operations.

Quality, In-house Manufacturing

Downhole Technology is committed to the highest product quality, so we perform all manufacturing at our own plant in Houston, Texas.

Boss Hog plug construction begins with the industry’s highest-quality composite material. We produce our composite material under tightly controlled temperature and humidity conditions to meet exact specifications. Composite material is tested at every stage of manufacture, assuring maximum quality and traceability. Our filament-wound composite material is stronger than composites fabricated from sheets and produces finer cuttings that flow back more easily during drillout.

All composite parts are machined in our facility by machinists experienced at working with this strong, lightweight material. Each Boss Hog component undergoes rigorous quality inspection, and after assembly in our plant, every 50th completed plug is tested in our dedicated frac plug laboratory to assure rated performance.

Simple Design for Efficiency and Reliability

Boss Hog plugs have a simple design, with fewer than half the parts used in competitive plugs, so they are easier to handle and less likely to lose components or set prematurely while being run into the wellbore. And because Boss Hog plugs are smaller than competitive plugs, they produce significantly less cuttings during drillout.

Our unique composite top slip is constructed of one piece to avoid breakage and presets, and it features carbide-free mild steel buttons that hold firm, prevent casing damage and are easily drilled out.

Our Heli-Seal fluid control system captures fluid while the plug is pumped down, enabling plugs to be run at speeds up to 600 ft/min while pumping at just 8 bbl/min, even in long lateral sections. Boss Hog plugs use 40% less water to deploy plugs and perforating guns than competitive plug designs.

Our one-piece segmented lower slip, manufactured from a proprietary cast blend material, holds the plug at high pressure and enables predictable drillouts.

The plug’s tapered nose makes it easy to maneuver past casing collars, around curves and through doglegs in the well.

The Boss Hog frac plug is easy to handle at the wellsite. Plugs are made up quickly using our specially designed adapter kit, which is compatible with Owen, Baker and standard hydraulic setting tools. We provide running procedures to wireline operators for the Boss Hog plug’s reduced-rate deployment in multi wells and increased deployment speeds in single wells.

Short, Fast, Strong

Boss Hog plugs are short, fast and strong. They are the result of the latest composite materials science, rigorous testing and an in-depth understanding of the plug-and-perforate completion process. More than 35,000 Boss Hog plugs have been run successfully without presets in major basins throughout the U.S. and Canada.

Quality Control Equals High Performance

During every stage of manufacture, Downhole Technology’s Boss Hog frac plugs undergo rigorous testing in our dedicated lab and downhole simu-lator (photo below). One out of every 50 manufac-tured plugs is destructively tested under simulated downhole con ditions to verify design perfor mance. Results shown at right are maximum pressure ratings achieved by each plug model in various casing sizes and temperature ranges.
