  • Hello everyone,

Usually at this time of year we are kicking off our events season and enjoying the first blush of spring, with warmer weather, bud-ding trees, and spring flowers. Obviously, the COVID-19 pandem-ic has changed all our lives, and I would very much like to express our gratitude to everyone still working in essential roles so that we are still able to get groceries, turn on the lights, and heat our homes. I would especially like to thank our first responders and medical workers who demonstrate their commitment to serve our communities with determination and grace in these most difficult of circumstances. I would also take a moment to extend our condolences to those who have lost a loved one to this virus; our hearts go out to you and your families.

As I am writing this we are still subject to the stay at home advisory from the governor and the club, at a national level, has wisely cancelled all our events through May 31st. Even if this date does release us from the stay at home advisory, I don't expect that things will return to normal right away, and we will still need to review all of our events to establish best practices to ensure we keep everyone as safe as possible. In our driving schools and autocross we have shared helmets and communicators. Instruc-tors sit next to student drivers and we gather for drivers meetings. All of this will need review to match whatever guidelines the CDC and state government suggest.

Please bear with us as we work through all of the challenges of this new world and stay tuned to our email updates as well as our communications through the website and our Facebook page. Now would be a great time to make sure that your membership with BMW CCA National is up to date and we have your correct email.

Again please stay safe and we hope to see you soon. Even if we are wearing face masks and standing six feet apart, we are all in this together.

As always, tell a friend and pass it on.

    Cheers,

    Simon

  • Welcome to the spring edition of Boston Bimmer!

It's been a little while since the last issue of the Bimmer was released, but don't despair; we're back! At the close of 2019, the BMW CCA launched an online publication called BimmerLife. It is essentially a "round-up" of all the CCA chapters in one place, where each can feature some its highlights and news. It really became the de facto winter edi-tion of the Bimmer in a way. Along with its creation came some changes in the rules that national uses with regard to the production of chapter newsletters. Given BimmerLife's all-encompassing nature, national decided it would do away with the once-every-90-days requirement for publishing a chapter newsletter and would also no longer make it a requirement that each chapter even publish a newsletter. Don't fear; the Bimmer will live on!

Since I began as Editor of the Bimmer, I've tried a few different approaches in terms of design and publication frequency, all with the Bimmer's transition to an electronic format at the forefront of my decision-making process. My initial idea was to produce the Bimmer on a monthly basis, with more news and current events featured. However, a chapter blog is now in the works, which will feature bulletins and other news stories (stay tuned). I then experiemented with a bi-monthly format, beginning with the previous Sep-tember/October issue, until arriving at the age-old saying: "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

The Bimmer will continue to be published four times a year, each quarter, as it always has been. I've also spent some time since the last issue settling on a design for the mag-azine, and I feel what I've come up with is modern and elegant while also embodying some of the classic design elements of the Bimmer going back a number of years. I hope you'll agree!

Now that the Bimmer has moved to the Boston Chapter website as a .pdf, I want to send a friendly reminder to please update or add your email by logging onto your CCA profile on the national website so you won't miss out on future issues of Boston Bimmer. Copies will be delivered directly to you through your email.

    Bimmer of the Month

Think you have a Bimmer that’s worthy of some publicity? Email pictures of your car to: [email protected] The requirements are simple: the pictures must be clear and it must be in the BMW family! (I will accept MINI and Rolls Royce.) Each issue, I will select one member's car as a winner and do a full-page spread with pictures and some info about your car. I will also select a runner-up.

That’s all for now. As always, feel free to drop me a line with any questions, comments, or if you just want to talk BMW.

    Best,

    Eric

  • BMW CENTER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD 2019

The BMW Dealership Center of Excellence (COE) Award is given by BMW North America (BMW NA) to select BMW dealers throughout the country that meet specific measurement criteria. The award is actually based on the prior year’s performance. Giv-en the time needed for BMW NA to verify and measure the data, the Award is issued the following year. The COE award is based on a set of measurements ranked by BMW NA within their peer group. It is awarded to 10% of all BMW dealers in the country which is approximately 34 BMW dealerships, based upon weighted averages. There are currently 337 dealers nationwide. Within key measurements it covers all functions of the dealership performance and the customer experience. Some examples are total sales volume, total parts sales, service effectiveness and dealer sales loyalty, and how well the center ranks overall. Another measurement is the dealership maintaining their current customer base within their Primary Market Area (PMA) for sales and service. BMW Dealerships within the Boston Chapter area who received this Center of Excellence Award were:

    • BMW of Sudbury • South Shore BMW of Rockland• BMW of Warwick, Rhode Island

For those of you on auto-renew, it is especially important after renewal that you check your chapter affiliation. The renewal program may change your primary chapter affili-ation automatically to correspond to your Zip code. If you do not live in Massachusetts, you may be affiliated with another chapter that is not your choice.

Members can check their chapter affiliation on BMWCCA.org. On the home page after login, in the lower left corner, go to the list and click on "My Membership." A box will pop up showing your chapter. If your membership is up for renewal this year and you are not signed up for auto-re-new, it is still important to check your chapter affiliation when you renew. If you do not live in Massachusetts, the selection of another chapter may be made by default on the chapter selection page of the renewal form. You can change to Boston if necessary.

We have brought this up to the IT department at the National office and they are working on a solution. In the meantime, please check.

If you find that you are not affiliated with Boston as your primary chapter and that is not your choice, please contact us at [email protected].

    Thank you,

    Matt BagedonowMembership Chair

Prompt, courteous attention with generous parts and service discounts, access to the garage bays, and educational and direct contact with the BMW technicians. I even left with a gift of a new BMW key ring and a car wash. SS BMW is the best!" -Paul Blecharczyk

  • and in the Track Day community. We have many loyal fans and customers in North America, who all share an emo-tional connection to our brand. Conse-quently, we see plenty of potential for our new car in North America. We are looking forward to giving our fans, cus-tomers and BMW dealers a close look at the BMW M2 CS Racing at various events during the next few weeks. I am sure that they will love it.”

After appearing at Daytona, the BMW M2 CS Racing was presented to North American BMW dealers during a con-ference outside Miami (USA). In early March, the car will be shown at the TC America season-opener at Austin (USA), where it will be sent into race competi-tion by customer teams from the 2021 season onwards.

The BMW M2 CS Racing can build on the extremely successful history of its pre-decessors in North America. Since 2016, BMW customer teams have claimed three team titles and two drivers’ champion-ships with the BMW M235i Racing and the BMW M240i Racing in TC America and the previous series. The aim is for the new car to continue in this vein.

The BMW M2 CS Racing offers the best setup for successful entry into motorsport. The new customer racing car is powered by an S55 six-cylinder in-line engine with BMW M TwinPow-er Turbo Technology which, with a capacity of 2,979 cc in the racing ver-sion, achieves between 280 hp (205 kW) and 365 hp (268 kW), depend-ing on the Balance of Performance or Permit B classification.

The maximum torque of 550 Nm is transmitted by a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission which has been applied using specialist motorsport software.

Another highlight of the BMW M2 CS Racing is its engine manage-ment. As with the BMW M4 GT4, in the future this will be controlled via power sticks, which enable various performance levels to be programmed and retrieved depend-ing on the stipulated Balance of Performance.

In parallel, BMW Motorsport is developing an upgrade variant of the BMW M2 CS Racing with 450 hp, providing a compelling racing car for the club racing segment that is rapidly gaining in popularity in North America.

BMW M2 CS RACING TO CONTINUE THE SUCCESS STORY IN NORTH AMERICA.

  • By John Sullivan The General Meeting was hosted by BMW of Peabody with thanks to John Pirotte GM and Rob Hannafin Service Manager. There was also a 25% discount on BMW parts with thanks to Jordan Slaven the BMW Parts Manager. Rob had a bunch of Pizza’s and bev-erages delivered to the service area in the former M- Building. Matt Bagedonow and Cristina Mangini were great helping to sign folks in and to pass raffle tickets to them. Our featured speaker was Mike Renner from the BMW Performance Center in SC who has one of the best jobs in the world. Mike regaled us about driving adventures and had several videos of the M-day Schools at the Performance Center Track. Mike talked about what happens in the course of a day at the M-School Driving Events and what to expect. Mike also mentioned their Thermal Club location out in La Quinta CA West Performance facility. He brought a gift certificate for a One Day M-School at either Center that was raffled off during the evening. There were also coupons for 20% off Driving Schools at either Center available. BMW CCA members normally get a 15% off discount at the BMW Performance Centers. Simon Cooper also gave us an overview of what happens at the 50+ Activities & Events that happen during the year at the Chapter. He also mentioned what the Track Schedule will look (at the schedule for HPDE’s) like for the year. He also brought a gift certificate for a free Boston Chapter HPDE Driving School and a free AutoX day at the Course. AutoX is still pending confirmation of their dates. Simon also had several Art pics that were part of the Raffle.

  • Normally at this point, the 2020 autocross sea-son would officially be underway. Unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment. As much as we all would love to be back out there in our cars breaking records, the health and safety of all is the chapter's top priority. We will be sure to keep everyone updated with regard to auto-cross as the year unfolds; but for now, let's take a look at last season and the Autocross Banquet.

The Banquet was held at Apex Entertainment in Marlborough. Karting, videos, and trampolines were all enjoyed before the main festivities began. We had a private room with our own bowling lanes! The food was tasty and the com-pany was fun and fabulous as usual.

As mentioned, we will provide updates for the 2020 season when we can. This year we will not be partnering with EVO and instead will be providing a new "special" event. We are still working on the details and will disclose all when available. Below is the 2020 autocross event schedule. The first two events in red are can-celled. ALL REMAINING EVENTS ARE TBD:

    5/10 - Event 15/31 - Novice School6/28 - Special Event7/5 - Event 27/19 - Event 38/15 - Event 48/30 - Event 59/19 - Event 69/27 - Novice School10/18 - Event 710/31 - Event 8
