Hello Everyone,
We are in the midst of fall and Thanksgiving is just around the corner. It has been a very difficult year for all of us but certainly much more difficult for families directly affected by Covid-19. Our sympathies and love go out to those missing a family member or friend and I continue to give thanks for our first responders who continue to care for us all.
This year, in order to run ‘some’ events, we observed common sense efforts to prevent the spread of the virus as outlined by state and CDC guidelines. Where we couldn’t do so, we cancelled events. Simply put, there was no event important enough to risk our members and their families.
Our Autocross team has done an incredible job in working within the guidelines to run multiple events throughout the summer and into the fall. My thanks to that team and frankly all of the autocrossers that came out, supported the events, and committed to the mask wearing and social distancing.
We also ran three HPDE events, again with all the elements of risk management observed. As we were unable to offer in-car instruction, the first two events were committed to advanced driver only formats which unfortunately excluded a portion of our driver groups. In an effort to serve the novice and intermediate groups for our last event at Tamworth, we used lead-follow techniques to expand attendance. This was very well received and at a minimum we will pursue this for all events next year until we can resume in-car instruction.
Unfortunately, the remainder of our events were or are being canceled for 2020 (calendar). We are in the midst of planning events for 2021 and hope to resume a more normal season. That being said, after our experience this year we will certainly adjust plans based on the situation at that time.
If you came out to an event this year, we hope we met your expectations for the event itself and for your safety. If you weren’t able to attend an event this year, we hope that we will see you again in 2021 when hopefully hand-shakes and hugs will be okay again.Stay tuned to our email notifications so that we can communicate changes in this ever-changing world. As a friendly reminder, please make sure that your membership with BMW CCA National is up to date and we have your correct email.
As always, please do tell a friend about the club and pass it on.
Cheers,
Simon

Welcome to the fall edition of Boston Bimmer!
I hope everyone has enjoyed the warmer-than-usual fall thus far. Maybe you've been able to extend your detailing calendar a little farther this year, and maybe you were able to make it out to one of the several socially distant lawn events the Larz Anderson museum was able to host this season!
Now that the Bimmer has moved to the Boston Chapter website as a .pdf, I want to send a friendly reminder to please update or add your email by logging onto your CCA profile on the national website so you won't miss out on future issues of Boston Bimmer. Copies will be delivered directly to you through your email.
Bimmer Profile
Think you have a Bimmer that’s worthy of some publicity? Do you have a story behind your car you want to share? Email a picture of your car to: [email protected] (I will accept MINI and Rolls Royce). If I select your car, I'll ask that you then send me a writeup. Tell us about it! How did you find it? Why'd you buy this BMW in particular? Is it your first? Fifth? What do you love about it? This is your chance to share the story of your car with chapter members as we head into the winter and socially distant lawn events become a thing of the past.
Some News!
I'm excited to announce a new addition to the Bimmer, which will also be featured on the chapter website, called Classics Corner. This will be a feature comprised of classic BMWs! If you have a BMW that's 25 years or older, send pictures to the email address listed above and I'll include every submission I receive. I'll provide a list of quick questions for each submission so a little background can be given on your car. Keep an eye out in your email for more details.
That’s all for now. As always, feel free to drop me a line with any questions, comments, or if you just want to talk BMW.
Best,
Eric

BMW CENTER OF EXCELLENCE AWARD 2020
The BMW Dealership Center of Excellence (COE) Award is given by BMW North America (BMW NA) to select BMW dealers throughout the country that meet specific measurement criteria. The award is actually based on the prior year’s performance. Given the time needed for BMW NA to verify and measure the data, the Award is issued the following year. The COE award is based on a set of measurements ranked by BMW NA within their peer group. It is awarded to 10% of all BMW dealers in the country which is approximately 34 BMW dealerships, based upon weighted averages. There are currently 337 dealers nationwide. Within key measurements it covers all functions of the dealership performance and the customer experience. Some examples are total sales volume, total parts sales, service effectiveness and dealer sales loyalty, and how well the center ranks overall. Another measurement is the dealership maintaining their current customer base within their Primary Market Area (PMA) for sales and service. BMW Dealerships within the Boston Chapter area who received this Center of Excellence Award were:
• BMW of Sudbury • South Shore BMW

For those of you on auto-renew, it is especially important after renewal that you check your chapter affiliation. The renewal program may change your primary chapter affili-ation automatically to correspond to your Zip code. If you do not live in Massachusetts, you may be affiliated with another chapter that is not your choice.
Members can check their chapter affiliation on BMWCCA.org. On the home page after login, in the lower left corner, go to the list and click on "My Membership." A box will pop up showing your chapter. If your membership is up for renewal this year and you are not signed up for au-to-renew, it is still important to check your chapter affilia-tion when you renew. If you do not live in Massachusetts, the selection of another chapter may be made by default on the chapter selection page of the renewal form. You can change to Boston if necessary.
We have brought this up to the IT department at the National office and they are working on a solution. In the meantime, please check.
If you find that you are not affiliated with Boston as your primary chapter and that is not your choice, please con-tact us at [email protected].
Thank you,

AN E28 THAT COMES FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS.
B O S T O N B I M M E R | FA L L 2 0 2 01 4
caught the E28 bug in 2010 and have not been able to shake it since. My first was a highly original 1987 535iS in Diamond Schwartz over Black. Shortly after purchase and attending my first Vintage event down in Winston Salem, North Carolina, I started collecting Racing Dynamics and Hartge parts for the E28 hoping to use them on the 535iS one day. Hartge built very few complete cars and was mostly in the parts business, selling steering wheels, wheels, engine kits, and other components to clients that wanted to up the performance and styling of their cars. It seemed to be they were less known than Alpina and AC Schnitzer. The more I learned about them, the more I became obsessed with the brand. I was collecting anything Hartge I could find.
I In 2016, I heard about this 1985 528i European slicktop (no sunroof) car that came from the west coast and was, essentially, a rolling shell. It was in pretty good shape, and originally Alpine White over Nutria. A perfect car to work up a Hartge H//5 clone with parts that I had been collecting over the years. Hartge originally used 528is for their chassis and I knew that would be a proper start. Next, I learned of a high compression (10:1) M30B34 motor that was available through a forum member on mye28.com. This was from a 9/82 euro 635csi and had the 272 degree cam, aux air valve setup, and ran on original Motronic management ( 011 ECU). After rebuilding that with teflon coated pistons, new rings, and top end parts,
FA L L 2 0 2 0 | B O S T O N B I M M E R 1 5
it was put together with a Getrag 260/6 and a S3.25 final drive, as well as exhaust starts with Tubular long tube headers into a Supersprint euro high flow exhaust.
Next up was the suspension and brakes. I upgraded the standard brake system with one from an E34 525i, rebuilt the master cylinder, and added stainless steel brake lines. Strut tubes and subframes were powder coated for Northeast durability. I then added Bilstein B6 sport shocks with Racing Dynamics green springs. I completed it with upper strut tower braces front and rear and then 25mm/19mm sway bars with reinforced mount kits were welded in.
Some forum friends assisted with the Hartge mono wiper conversion and it came together, slowly but surely. I added Hartge front and rear spoilers, wheels, a stripe kit, a steering wheel, a gauge pod with original Hartge VDO gauges, Hartge badges all around, and details like a shift knob and a footrest were finally found. Euro bumpers and lights were installed and the whole body was color sanded to bring back the smoothness of the single stage (146) Alpine White paint.
While I had the interior and dash removed, I replaced the heater core with local CCA friend Jim Tyack, added black carpet, a leather wrapped dash, and found a Canadian E28 M5 black leather console kit for the car. A forum friend in the Nederlands helped source an uber rare full E28 Houndstooth cloth sport
B O S T O N B I M M E R | FA L L 2 0 2 01 6
Finally getting it on the road last year, I was impressed with the power and handling but knew it still could be better. I recently upgraded it to Motronic 1.3 management and found a Hartge tuned 179 ECU. This improved performance, and drivability really started coming together.
Recently, I took it to the Asheville, North Carolina area with some friends and drove it around some incredible mountain roads for a few days. I pushed it the whole time trying to keep up with a track prepped E36 M3 - and it felt amazing. Nothing like hopping in a car that you put together yourself and clocking two thousand miles or so - with many at four to seven thousand RPM hammering up and down hills…only in a classic BMW!Future plans include 290 cam with upgraded valves, HD rockers, and a B35 intake ported to the B34 head as well as a headlight wiper/wash system. A stereo would also be nice, but I don't mind the music right now...Many thanks to friends local and far that have helped me with this project - it's been so much fun. See you all at an event or on the lawn at the Lars!

A PROFESSIONAL DETAILER SHARES SOME OF HIS TIPS AND PRODUCT INSIGHTS FOR PROTECTING
YOUR CAR FROM A HARSH NEW ENGLAND WINTER.
STORY AND PHOTOGRAPHS BY THOMAS WALTER
FA L L 2 0 2 0 | B O S T O N B I M M E R 2 1
ome would say we are living in the golden age of car care products. With new technology and a bigger selection than ever before, it can be daunting to choose a product to replace that old can of Turtle Wax that your dad swore by. For most enthusiasts it’s general knowledge that waxing can help preserve the finish on your car. But in the harsh climate of a northeast winter, the occasional undercarriage flush can be critical to prevent rust and corrosion as well. In this article we’ll discuss the differences in some paint protection products and an affordable solution for undercarriage rinses at home. My goal in this write-up is to help you keep your cherished automobile protected from the elements. First, lets talk about the difference between waxes, sealants and coatings. Wax is generally what people are familiar with and has been around for years. Most are a blend of organic Brazilian Carnauba emulsified in a solvent to keep it soft because raw wax is very hard and would otherwise be unusable. Wax is prized for it’s scratch filling and gloss capabilities, however where it falls short is in durability. This is where a paint sealant comes in. Normally consisting of synthetic polymers, they create a much more durable layer of protection. In my experience any where from 2-3 times in duration. The drawback is sealants can lack the glow that Carnauba is known for. A coating or ceramic coating is the most durable of them all and has an amazing amount of gloss. Although it is much more difficult to apply, has to be done indoors and if it’s not done right can lead to the whole vehicle needing to be machine polished to remove it. So ceramic coatings are kind of reserved for the more serious do-it-yourselfer and is usually accompanied by some form of paint correction as well. So it is my opinion that a sealant is probably most user friendly option to keep your paint protected for the upcoming New England winter.
Paint sealants come in different forms. From paste consistency liquids to watery, super concentrated sprays that can even have ceramic properties infused into them for added durability. Some of us that haven’t used modern spray sealants could be under the impression that they are not as strong as their thick, pasty counterparts. While this used to be the case, the chemistry has come a long way and the ceramic (also known as SiO2) infused spray sealant can be very durable indeed. I’ve seen CarPro Reload, which is an SiO2 spray sealant last 2-3 months. Most sprays are easier to apply than a paste sealant but I’ve found the drawback of the sprays is that they don’t add much gloss. That leads to one of my all time favorite sealants, Jescar Power Lock Plus. It has a tooth paste consistency that spreads out buttery smooth with a foam applicator pad. It’s best to let it cure for about 30 minutes before buffing it off like any old school wax. While a little more effort is involved to apply and it can be a little finicky to remove, you will be rewarded as it really bridges the gap on that lustre you get from an organic wax while having one of the strongest levels of protection I’ve seen short of a ceramic coating. Three months plus of durability can be expected on a car that stays outside and 6 months on something garage kept.
S
It's my opinion that a sealant is probably most user friendly option to keep your paint protected for the
upcoming New England winter.
Manufacturers want their products to seem superior to their competitors so they use numbers (usually in months) to explain how long their wax or sealant will protect the paint. After years of using various products, one thing I’ve found to be true is they’re almost always exaggerated claims. In my opinion they rate their products on how well they would last under ideal conditions. That is, garage kept and occasionally driven. In the real world of daily drivers that sleep under the stars it’s usually half or a third of the stated durability. So if it says six months of paint protection on the bottle, it’s probably more like two or three.

If you’ve already invested in a pressure washer you’re ahead of the game. If not, there are some very affordable electric options out there now. If you like ordering online there is a plethora of good options. I’ve personally used a couple of Ryobi units from Home Depot in my detailing profession before stepping up to a more commercial electric unit and they work great. Their most inexpensive option retails for $99, is super portable and comes with a hose and wand. I’ve torture tested mine and it held up well. (I used one to do almost 50 washes in the month of June while my main unit was down. Which in my opinion is way beyond the intended use of this unit).
The second item you’ll need is Ryobi’s Pressure Washer Water Broom which retails for $45. It attaches directly to the wand in place of the nozzle and has wheels on it. It directs the pressurized water upward so you can roll it back and forth under your car to flush all the salt out from underneath your ride. Doing this process regularly can go a long way toward stifling the corrosion that seems all but inevitable in New England. A secondary benefit if you go the route of spending the $150 or so on this setup is you now have a paint safe ( low power ) pressure washer to bathe the exterior and can do a better job cleaning the wheels and wheel wells too. ( I would highly recommend picking up a 25° nozzle to replace the 15° that comes in the box, as it is even gentler on the paint ) I realize that at times in the winter it is just too cold to run water outside. But that’s why you put that good coat of paint sealant on before the winter hit and you just have to be patient for that above freezing day to get out there and give your car the love it deserves. Another nice thing about these lightweight, electric pressure washers is they are quick and easy to set up. It’s also best to fill that bucket with some nice hot, steamy water if you’re washing on a cold day. Detailing as a whole has become considerably more mainstream in a world where unlimited info is at our fingertips. Another reason is that a new family sedan now costs $40k and more people than ever before are looking to maintain that investment as best they can. I think this benefits us as hobbyists and professionals alike to a great degree, as companies are furiously competing to create affordable, durable and more user friendly products. Because of this you can rest assured that if you’re buying a product from a reputable manufacturer such as Meguiar’s, Griot’s, Chemical Guys or Mother’s it will likely work well. Hopefully with the info laid out in this article you’ll have a little bit better idea what you’re looking at the next time you go to your favorite auto parts store and peruse the many options in the car care aisle for paint protection.

We would like to thank everyone who participated in the events this year. It was an unusual year, to say the least, but as always the Boston BMW CCA Autocrossers came through with massive amounts of cooperation, patience and good humor despite the challenges that this year posed.
Please thank Laura Rosen for all her hard work in producing results for us. Because of the changes to the events this year, we made some minor alterations in how we calculated who placed in each group. The biggest change was reducing the number of qualifying events from 4 to 3. We also decided to expand the number of trophies to 1 trophy for each 2 participants to qualify and tie breakers were eliminated.
Congratulations to all class winners and everyone who placed! Awards will be mailed in December.

Do you Have Old Copies of Boston
Bimmer?
The editorial staff at the Bimmer is on the lookout for issues of Boston Bimmer that are missing from our archives and the BMW CCA Museum. If you have a collection you've been

Iwas lucky enough to meet up with Boston Chapter member Jason Drori and his sons in Chestnut Hill last month to snap a few pics of his 2021 M5 Competition.
M5
Jason's first BMW, he and his sons couldn't be more thrilled with the car. Jason gave me a walk around and even started the twin-turbo, 4.4 litre V8 for me. Drori, of Newton, said of the car, " The 617-horsepower M5 Competition delivers unforgettable style and performance—beginning with a thunderous M Sport exhaust system."
“My family emigrated to the United States from Israel in December 1987. One Saturday the following summer I remember my father staring at an Arctic White BMW M5 gliding alongside Del Mar City Beach in San Diego. “Look at that one,” he softly whispered with a longing, faraway stare. I was seven years old. 33 years later, on October 15th, I drove home in a Hatch Grey Metallic 2021 M5 Competition. Pulling into the garage of my building in Newton, Massachusetts I felt a mixture of exhilaration and pride that is hard to describe.
