Pierre Poinsett is an eight-year veteran of the University of Illinois Extension Master Gardener (MG) program. 2012 marks the fifth year he will be a judge for the Bowmanville Garden Walk. He

recently shared, “I am excited to participate in what is always a highlight to my gardening summer. This event is the coolest gardening-inspired activity I do each year.”

Pierre is in his fourth year as one of the volunteer MG’s at the Museum of Science and Industry’s Smart Home exhibit. In recent years, he has transformed an underused plot at Grant-White grade school in Forest Park to a perennial garden enjoyed by students and the community. He also operates a business called Intimate Gardens, Inc. that serves residential and commercial gardens. “We create garden rooms,” is the company’s motto. In 2005, Pierre became a Master Composter. He has conducted numerous gardening and composting presentations in the Chicago metropolitan area.

Patricia Morin is a 2012 graduate of the Chicago Master Gardener program (MG). She is also a former resident of the Bowmanville neighborhood, living on Farragut Ave from 2002 to 2004. Patricia has a lifelong love

of gardening, having inherited her “stick a plant where there’s an empty spot” gardening philoso-phy from her mom. Her windows were usually difficult to open because of the window boxes and flower pots in the way.

Patricia’s involvement with community gardens predates her Master Gardener certification. She led a team which created a 2400 square foot garden at Randolph Elementary School in Englewood. She advised neighbors starting a community garden in the Brynford Park neighborhood, and headed development of a raised bed vegetable garden at Edgebrook Lutheran Church which supplies a food pantry. Patricia is particularly fond of container gardening and maintains over 50 pots and other containers surrounding her home.

Reuben Rios loves to plant and grow things and will grow them whereever he can find a space, usually in contain-ers indoors and in the yards of friends and relatives. He got involved with the University of Illinois

Extension Master Gardener program to learn how and why plants grow and to learn what he can do to best maintain them.

In addition to being a certified Chicago Master Gardener (MG) Reuben is an Openlands certified TreeKeeper. He loves horticulture study and helps others learn how to care for and grow healthy beautiful plants. Last year Reuben was at our “Ask a Master Gardener” table and this year he is returning to be a judge.

“ Ask a Master Gardener”

2012 Bowmanville Garden Walk Judges

Patricia Pinianski had been a lucky self-taught gardener for 30 years when she took the Master Gardener training and became an educated gardener. Her backyard reflects her love for bright colors and varying textures. She’s never met a flower or plant that she didn’t like or want to buy. She is now pursuing a Certificate in Green Homes and Gardens from the Chicago Center for Green Technology. She has given workshops for gardeners of the Winthrop Family Garden and for interested 47th Ward gardeners. She’s hoping to organize a garden club in her area of Lakeview.

Jeannie Radek is a newly certified Master Gardener (spring 2012). She is a transplant from the DuPage County Master Gardener program where she volunteered at DuPage Convalescent Home, Garfield Park Conservatory, Peterson Community Garden, Three Brothers Garden and several middle school planting programs. She as-pires to become a Master Naturalist if accepted this year. Jeannie has been an interior decorator and designer by profession and her passion outdoors is for designing gardens with water features. She prefers ornamental gardens to vegetable gardens for their fragrance and color and loves making her own garden a bird and butterfly sanctuary.

Jackie Tanaka became involved with the Master Gardener Program with the Class of 2009 at Garfield Park Conservatory and resides in East Rogers Park where she gardens in her backyard, and grows veggies at the Schreiber Park Community Garden and Peterson Garden. She volunteers at several locations around town, including Smart Home Garden at the Museum of Science & Industry, Garfield Park Conservatory, Schwab Rehabilitation Institute rooftop garden and the Frank Lloyd Wright Home & Studio.

Beata Welsh is a garden consultant and a Master Gardener since 2002. She has home gardened in the North of Howard area since 1978. Beata has a certificate in Ornamental Plants from the Chicago Botanic Garden and a certificate in Green Landscaping from the Chicago Center for Green Technology. Her additional and ongoing training is in garden design and sustainability. Her major area of focus is sustainable gardening using native plants and rain gardens. Beata volunteers in community gardens located both North of Howard Street and in Evanston, and is a member of the Green Team at St. Nicholas Parish in Evanston.

The University of Illinois Extension Program is providing Master Gardeners to answer your questions. Stop by the “Ask a Master Gardener” table at Bowmanville and Bell (map location 1.)

This nationwide program is a vital link in getting horticulture information to the public.
