Fall is my favourite time of year. Something happens to me during this time that doesn’t happen for the rest of the year. It’s as if my ancestors are alive and well, living inside of me. I get this need to start making stews, chili, homemade soups and baked goods. There is something about having a
freezer full of food….just in case. Well, we have had quite a few of those “just in cases”. Our winters have not been kind and the temperatures chill you to the bone. So there isn’t anything more comforting than warm mac & cheese, or chili with homemade bread. It warms you up inside. Inside this edition we will share some of our favourite Fall & Winter recipes.
We are fortunate to live in a community surrounded by untouched green space. It’s perfect for hiking, snowshoeing and tobogganing. We are also in close proximity of
ski hills, and arenas to enjoy family skating. Enniskillen Conservation Area has wonderful cross-country trails. If you go to www.cloca.com you can learn about all the conservation areas in and around our community. We hope you enjoy this edition and
have a safe and memorable Fall & Winter Season.

You’re Vote isIMPORTANTWRITTEN BY
MAYOR ADRIAN FOSTER
F r o m t h e M ayo r s d e s k
Fall’s a bitter-sweet time of year. We have to say good-bye to summer, but the colours, festivals and harvests are always wonderful. Wonderful too is gaining an hour on a weekend when we change our clocks!
The Federal election in October could, or not, bring change as
well. As much as we can’t change the weather or stop the seasons,
we do have control over who represents us in Ottawa. All we need
to do is get out and vote. About 60% of electors vote in Federal
races, which means that in most ridings can be won by about 15% of
the voting population. Your vote isn’t meaningless, nor is it inconse-
quential especially with the new ridings and apparently tight races.
I know that life can be busy and that getting out on voting night
can be difficult, but, you can apply to vote by mail, you can vote now
at Elections Canada offices or you can vote at advance and regular
polls. Check out the Elections Canada website. They are trying to
make it easy for you to have your say.
I understand too that a lot of people are turned off politics or that
many of us simply have better things to do than analyse political
platforms, so many people don’t vote simply for lack of informa-
tion about the issues. Have I got a plan for you! There are several
websites that will quiz you on things that you believe the federal
government should or shouldn’t do and which match your beliefs
with the various platforms. They’re pretty cool. If you google ‘fed-
eral election who to vote for quiz’, you’ll get a couple of good sites
to consider. CBC, Metroland and Macleans have quizzes as well,
check them out.
Sometimes we hear that the federal government is so far removed
from our daily lives that voting is pointless. I can tell you, at the
municipal level we very much need the help of, and to work with,
the federal government. Issues that directly touch us on a daily ba-
sis such as affordable housing, infrastructure such as roads, meeting
places and mass transit are obvious. Criminal justice, social justice,
economic growth and job creation are equally important. Support
for the environment, for agriculture and, well, so much more, is
largely in the hands of our federal representatives.
And, finally, let me help you with the candidates themselves. The
Clarington Board of Trade has put together a list of the websites
for our candidates. If you google ‘federal election 2015 Clarington
Board of Trade’ you’ll find a page with the links.
So, you’re vote is important, it can be pretty
convenient to vote, there are lots of ways to fig-
ure out how to vote and.... you can pretty easily
learn about the candidates themselves.
Please. Vote.
Oh, and enjoy an amazing Fall and Winter in
our amazing community!

Top Ten Misconceptions Associated with Hearing Loss
Hearing loss, along with most things, have a lot of misconceptions associated with them. These misconceptions prevent a lot of people from getting the help they require. Let’s take a moment to clear up some of those.
1. People with hearing loss are stupid
I know it sounds pretty ridiculous, but a lot of people feel that
someone is less intelligent when they don’t hear correctly. Often
times they’ll sit there with a blank look on their face because they’re
not sure how to respond. This can very easily be addressed with
intervention.
2. My hearing will get worse if I wear hearing aids
A successfully aided person will come to rely on their hearing aids
and will realize how much they were missing before. They choose to
not sit there with that dumb look on their face anymore (see myth
one).
3. I can “get by” without hearing aids so I don’t need them
People who feel like they can get by without hearing aids usually
misunderstand a large part of what is said to them. They think they
hear things correctly but they don’t know what they’re getting wrong.
The long term consequences are an increased risk of depression,
dementia, Alzheimer’s and social isolation.
4. Hearing aids are uncomfortable
This used to be correct. Hearing aids used to be large and bulky.
They would plug your ear and sometimes have long wires connecting
piece together. Today’s miniaturized technology relieves that and
most people wearing modern hearing aids can’t even feel them in
their ears.
5. Everyone will know I wear hearing aids and they will look at me
differently
Again, see the previous point. Hearing aids have become so small
that most people who wear them can’t even see them when looking
in the mirror. If this concern is important to you then bring it up
with your clinician and they will ensure no one will see.
6. I can fake hear really well
No you can’t. You may think you’re fooling people but really
you’re not. Trust me.
7. No one likes their hearing aids so why bother?
People who don’t like their hearing aids haven’t been fit properly.
If your friend is always complaining about their hearing aids they
need to return to the clinic they bought them from and address
their concerns. If they still don’t like them they should get a second
opinion.
8. If I get hearing aids, I only need to wear them when I go out
Casual use of hearing aids leads to unsatisfactory results. The brain
never gets used to environmental sounds unless more than half the
day is spent wearing those (12+ hours). The brain never learns how
to focus on what it wants to and you end up not wearing them at all.
9. I can wear only one despite loss in both ears
Not if you want to hear in noise. Wearing only one hearing aid
would be like wearing a monocle and picking up a pen on your first
try. It’s not happening.
10. If I admit to hearing loss then I’ll be old
More and more youth and younger adults are being diagnosed
with hearing loss every day. Hearing loss may be caused by aging, but
that is only one of hundreds of different causes.

Change your table centre piece to reflect
the new season and bring in new table
runners and linens. You could use a throw
you already have rather than purchasing
something new.
Hang a new wreath on your front door
as each season changes. Use your porch to
create a seasonal vignette. You could grab a
chair from the thrift store, an old wooden
box, a throw, lanterns and candles. Don’t
forget the welcome mat.
WRITTEN BY STILES INTERIORS
The new season is upon us and
your home still looks like its
celebrating summer. With these
simple tips you can warm up your home to
illicit the cozy warm feelings we look for
during the long nights and cool days.
Change the pillows on your sofa. Look for
pillows that have a knitted texture, or deep
warmer tones to compliment your décor.
Add cozy throws draped on your sofa or
chair. Grab a beautiful basket with additional
co-ordinating throws rolled up ready for use.
Bring in an electric fireplace. There is
nothing like watching the flicker of flames
to help chase away the chill. It also creates
another surface to decorate for the holiday
season.
Candle light with sweet scents of baking
creates feelings of warmth and home.
Add cozy fabrics to your bedroom. Flannel
sheets, down duvets, even faux fur reflect the
cooler season.
Use seasonal displays such as branches
with tiny lights and displays with seasonal
fruit.
Bring in an area rug for an otherwise empty
floor. It will warm your feet up instantly.

Branding is more than just a logo or tag line. It’s about the entire
customer experience - logo, website, social media, how you answer
the phone to how your staff treat your customers. To sum it up your
brand is your promise to your customer. It tells them what they can
expect from your products and services, and it differentiates your
products and services from that of your competitors. Your brand is
attained from who you are, who you want to be and who people
perceive you to be.
Branding doesn’t just happen. It’s a consistent, well executed
strategic plan and if done right is a disciplined process, a logical set
of linked actions by your
organization to make a
strategy work. Your brand
strategy is how, what, where,
when and to whom you
plan on communicating
and delivering on your brand
messages. Where you advertise and
what you communicate visually and verbally is part of this strategy
and it sets you apart from your competitors both locally and globally.
Branding promotes recognition. People tend to do business with
companies they are familiar with. People love taking about their
experiences with a company. However you can’t tell someone about
a company you can’t remember.
A brand will help encourage someone to buy a product, and it
directly supports whatever sales or marketing activities are in play,
but the brand does not explicitly say “here I am, buy me.” Instead,
it says “This is what I am. This is why I exist. If you agree, if you
like me, you can buy me, support me, and recommend me to your
friends.”

Did you know that Sharks have around 40 sets of teeth in their lifetime?
Dental Check-Ups Include Oral Cancer ScreeningWe thoroughly screen you for any signs of oral cancer during
your dental visits. This serious dental disease is often highly
curable if diagnosed and treated in the early stages. And
remember it is never too late to quit smoking!
Gum (Periodontal) Disease Affects Your Overall Health
Gum disease leads to tooth loss and is also linked to heart
disease and strokes. Early prevention of progression of this
disease can be achieved through regular dental cleanings and
proper brushing techniques. Come meet our gum specialist to
keep your teeth and gums healthy.
Bad Breath Can Be the Result of a Dental ProblemMouthwash only masks the odour caused by bad breath,
but does not cure it. Brushing your teeth & tongue twice a
day, drinking plenty of water & visiting your dental hygienist
regularly for dental cleanings are a few ways to keep bad breath
under control.
Change Your Toothbrush RegularlyToothbrushes usually wear out within 3 months of use. If you
have gum disease, your toothbrush should be changed every
4-6 weeks because bacteria can harbour in the bristles.
The Foods You Eat Affect Your Dental HealthLimit foods that are high in sugar. For example, soft drinks
which are high in sugar can combine with the bacteria in your
mouth, producing acids that weaken tooth enamel and cause
cavities. Plenty of natural fruits and vegetables are good for
both your dental health and overall health!
Cavities Do Not Always Cause PainDental pain usually occurs when the cavity has become
large and has irritated the nerve of the tooth. Dental care is
all about prevention. We often recommend taking x-rays to
detect cavities early so that we can fix small cavities before they
become larger and painful.
Take care of your teeth – after all, we only have two sets in
our lifetime!

A snowy winter day can make a beautiful backdrop!!! Do you and
the kids love winter activities? Then this is the time of year to have
your family photographs taken! I’m going to give you a few tips
& ideas for having a successful winter family portrait. KEEPING
WARM! Definitely the first thing that comes to mind when plan-
ning winter photos! If you’re looking for the family to have that per-
fect wardrobe look for your winter session and hoping to lose the big
bulky jackets, then layering is key!! Wear as many layers as you can
underneath your beautiful wardrobe. Bring blankets to help keep
you and the kids warm between the shots. A big thermos with some
hot chocolate is always a good idea. The hot chocolate and blanket
can be added in as cute props, as well! You can also incorporate
matching mittens and hats for some shots.
Picking your scene is next. Are you avid skiers or snowboarders?
Then maybe a shoot on the hill in your gear is perfect for you! Does
the family love tobogganing or building a snowman? Hockey or fig-
ure skating? Sling your skates over your shoulders!! All great ideas
to capture fun family candids!
The woods with freshly fallen snow on the tree branches always
makes a beautiful setting. My all-time favourites are Christmas tree
farm photos! If it’s tradition every year to cut down the family tree,
how special it is to have some photos of this!! Vintage plaids, jeans
,mittens and hats are as popular as ever for this type of shoot. This
makes for the perfect Christmas card. So bundle up and capture
some amazing memories this winter - rosy cheeks and all!! I can
hardly wait to be out snapping shots in the falling snow, and I hope
this has helped inspire you to capture your family in a fun, unique
way!!

PROTECT YOUNG TREES WITH GUARDS: Put plastic or
wire mesh (hardware cloth) tree guards around the slender trunks
of any new trees and shrubs to protect them from gnawers such as
rabbits and mice, and make sure the tree guards go high enough,
over the snow line.
Continue to water trees, especially evergreens, until the ground
freezes. Evergreens need a good store of moisture going into winter
because they don’t lose their leaves, which means they continue to
transpire (give off water vapor) through the cold months.
USE YOUR YARD’S LEAVES: Consider shredding fall leaves
and using them as winter mulch on flower beds. You can also add
shredded leaves to the compost pile. In a season or so, they’ll make the
best treat your garden soil can have. You can use a chipper shredder,
if you have one, or just run your lawn mower over the leaves.
Clean up fallen leaves from your lawn each week instead of leaving
the job until all the leaves have fallen. In fall, lawn grass still needs
sunlight as it is creating sugars to
store in its root system for good
growth next spring. Leaving
the leaves on top of the lawn
can smother the grass and
weaken it. However,
there is an easier way
than raking to deal with
leaves on your lawn: just
chop them up with your
mower, and leave them on
the grass to break down. You
will probably have to run over
them a couple of times. Research has
found that turf grass benefits from chopped
up leaves left on the lawn instead of being raked off.
CONTROL LAWN WEEDS: If you spray your lawn
to control broadleaf weeds, the month of October is the
most effective time for this job.
APPLY LAWN FERTILIZER: A lawn fertilizer
application made in the late fall encourages increases
winter hardiness and promotes quick greening in spring.
For more information on this, see low maintenance lawn
care.
CUT THE LAWN ONE FINAL TIME: After you are
finished, why not get your mower serviced and its blade
sharpened now so it will be ready for spring?
WEEDING: Do one last weeding and discard any weeds that have
seeds on them in the garbage instead of the compost. You don’t want
those pesky seeds sprouting in your garden later.
GETTING YOUR FLOWER GARDEN READY FOR WINTERPERENNIAL GARDEN
CLEAN-UP: Whether you
cut down dying perennial
foliage when you are
getting the garden ready
for winter is up to you.
Some gardeners like to
leave seed heads and dried
foliage for winter interest
and to feed birds. Others
prefer to leave neat beds ready
for a show of spring-flowering
bulbs. But whatever you cut down now,
you don’t have to clean up in the spring.
A good compromise when getting your garden ready for winter is
to remove leaves and stalks that frost turns to mush and any that are
diseased, but keep some ornamental grasses and the perennials with
seed heads that provide winter food to birds. When cutting plants
down, prune perennials to 4 to 5 inches of the ground.
ANNUALS: Pull out any last frosted annuals and add spent plant
material to your compost.
WEEDING AND EDGING: Do a final weeding and edging of
flower beds.
SPRING BULBS: This is still a good time to
plant spring-flowering bulbs before the
ground freezes hard.
ROSE CARE: Don’t cut roses
back now – do it early spring. Hill
up hybrid tea roses with soil for
winter protection if necessary.
WINTER MULCH: Once the
ground freezes, apply a layer of
winter mulch to perennial beds
– don’t do this too early or you’ll
provide winter shelter for rodents.

9 apples (go with your favorite baking variety) peeled, cored, and thinly sliced Juice of 2 small limes 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla 1/2 tsp almond extract 1 cup brown sugar 1 heaping cup of oats 2 tbs blanched almond slivers, crushed with your hand 2 tbs dried shredded coconut 1 tsp cinnamon (extra) 75g butter at room temperature
Toss the sliced apple with lime juice and add cinnamon, vanilla and almond extract. Set aside.
In a separate mixing bowl, combine sugar, oats, crushed almond, coconut and cinnamon. Slowly add the butter, mixing with your fingers until crumbly.
In a deep baking pan, slide apple mixture into the pan and even out the top with a spatula. Spoon the sugar mixture and press over the top, again making sure the top is even.
If you’re oven gets very hot, 190°C (375°F) will do. If not, I’d lean towards 210°C (410°F). But keep your eye on it.
Bake for 45 minutes to an hour, until apples are ten-der and the top is crispy. Cover with foil until ready to eat, and serve with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Winter or summer, some of my favourite foods are simple, but
to me, very comfortable. I have my faves. Nothing fancy. I know
sometimes there seems to be pressure to make things fancy, add
everything under the sun on a pizza or in a sandwich to make it
stand out. But to me, some back to basics food still give me that
comfortable feeling. Many times, it’s a reminder of my younger
years.
A good Montreal smoked meat sandwich on rye with regular
mustard. Thank you very much. No cheese. No Dijon mustard.
Just as simple as the first time I had one. That’s comfortable!
Sticking with our Quebec neighbours for a minute, I like a
simple poutine, as it was first put together. Fresh cut fries, cheese
curds and brown gravy. I don’t need chicken or bacon or whatever
else is the ingredient of the day on my poutine. Just simple and
basic, the way it was first offered.
I have my favourite pizza too. The way I ordered it as a kid, and
several years later (I won’t say how many), I still prefer it the same
way – All Dressed, which to me means pepperoni, green peppers
Simply Comfortable!
26 your town bowmanville F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6
and mushrooms. No matter how many options of pizzas you put
in front of me, usually a list too long for me to go through, this is
still my go to selection, my comfort zone.
My favourite sandwiches are simple too. I know there is
competition to be more creative and stand out from the rest, but
sometimes, and I don’t think I’m alone, I like it simple, the way I
remember it. Have you ever found yourself looking for a simple
egg salad sandwich on fresh sliced bread, and all you can find are
fancy sandwiches with varieties of meats, cheeses or breads that
fall well out of your comfort zone. You get what you can, but
eventually still have that unfulfilled taste for a simple egg salad,
salmon salad or ham, lettuce & mayo sandwich on simple sliced
bread. All part of my comfort zone.
Of course, I also love pasta. Good old mac and cheese will do
it for me for lunch almost any day. If I’m home and cooking for
the kids, Spaghetti and Meat Sauce will do it – pasta sauce with
chopped up peppers and onions, with a little bit of spice for bite,
will do just fine. Add some fresh crusty bread, or toasted garlic
bread if you have time, along with parmesan cheese, and there
you have it – comfort!
I do love my soup. When not at home, one of my favourites
that I always look for on a restaurant menu is French Onion
Soup, with lots of cheese, of course. Always a good starter when
I’m eating out. Not every eatery makes it the same, but it’s usually
pretty close, with some better than others.
Now, for something a little more hearty. When I’m out for
dinner, and ready for a full meal, I’m still a meat and potatoes
kind of person. A good steak, done medium for me, and mashed
potatoes will make my list. Sure you can add some vegetables on
my plate to complete my meal, but if I’m preparing it for myself
at home, it will likely be sautéed mushrooms and caramelized
onions for me. And my favourite cut of steak – T-bone. So, a
nice T-bone steak with mashed potatoes, sautéed mushrooms
and caramelized onions… I think I need to go to the kitchen
now!
I’m not always satisfied by standard fare. I do have other
go to choices for to satisfy other cravings for some extra
flavour. Curried goat with white rice is still one of my favourites,
for that extra bit of spice.
Eating out, of being on the road doesn’t mean you can’t
be comfortable when it comes to your meals. Local bistros
understand what it takes, and can accommodate many needs,
including helping you stay in your comfort zone. Whether you
tastes lean towards the simple or the fancy, they can help you
meet those needs.
Quick and easy comfort food doesn’t have to only come from
home. If you’re on the road, either as a family or as a group,
contact your local bistro, as we are always willing able to help you
with your meals on the road.
Nothing fancy, but oh so comfortable!

Directions
Peel the potatoes and cut into 1/2-inch dice. Place in a medium saucepan and cover with cold water. Set over high heat, cover and bring to a boil. Once boiling,
uncover, decrease the heat to maintain a simmer and cook until tender and easily crushed with tongs, approximately 10 to 15 minutes. Place the half-and-half and butter into a microwave-safe
container and heat in the microwave until warmed through, about 35 seconds. Drain the potatoes in a colander and then return to the saucepan. Mash the
potatoes and then add the half and half, butter, salt and pepper and continue to mash until smooth. Stir in the yolk until well combined.
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F.
While the potatoes are cooking, prepare the filling. Place the canola oil into a 12-inch sauté pan and set over medium high heat. Once the oil shimmers, add the onion and carrots and sauté just until they begin to take on color, approximately 3 to 4 minutes. Add the garlic and stir to combine. Add the lamb, salt and pepper and cook until browned and cooked through, approximately 3 minutes. Sprinkle the meat with the flour and toss to coat, continuing to cook for another minute. Add the tomato paste, chicken broth, Worcestershire, rosemary, thyme, and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat to low, cover and simmer slowly 10 to 12 minutes or until the sauce is thickened slightly. Add the corn and peas to the lamb mixture and spread evenly into an 11 by 7-inch glass baking dish. Top with the mashed potatoes, starting around the edges to create a seal to prevent the mixture from bubbling up and smooth with a rubber spatula. Place on a parchment lined half sheet pan on the middle rack of the oven and bake for 25 minutes or just until the potatoes begin to brown. Remove to a cooling rack for at least 15 minutes before serving.

OUR GOAL IS YOUR TRUST!WE LISTEN!WE UNDERSTAND!
POWERFUL MORTGAGE ADVICE!PERSONALIZED SERVICE!
MORTGAGE CLOSING
Here we are… we have worked together
to secure financing for your mortgage. You
are getting a great rate and favourable terms
that meet your goals; the lender is satisfied
with all supporting documents; we are
broker complete, and the only thing left to
do is wait for the day the lawyers advance the
funds.
Here is a list of things you should NEVER
do in the time between your financing
complete date (when everything is set up)
and your closing date (the day the lender
actually advances funds).Never make
changes to your financial situation without
first consulting me. Changes could cause
your mortgage to be declined.
1. Maintain current employment.
This might sound obvious, but if you
quit your job we will have to report this
new employment status to the lender. You
will be required to support your mortgage
application with your new employment
details. Even if you have taken on a new job
that pays twice as much and is in the same
industry, there might be a probationary
period and the lender might not feel
comfortable in proceeding. If you really
must consider changing jobs, talk to me first.
2. Protect your income level.
Getting a raise is fine, but dropping from
full-time to part-time status is not a good
idea. The reduced income will change your
debt service ratios on your application and
you might not qualify.
3. Don’t apply for new credit.
I realise that you are excited to get your new
house, especially if it’s your first. However,
now is not the time to go shopping on credit
or take out new credit cards. If you are
shopping for new furniture and they want
you to finance your purchase right away…
don’t. By applying for new credit you can
jeopardize your mortgage.
4. Keep your existing credit.
In the same way that it’s not a good idea
to take on new credit, it’s best not to close
any existing credit. The lender has agreed
to lend you the mortgage money based on
your current situation, and this includes the
strength of your credit profile. Mortgage
lenders and insurers require a minimum
credit profile. If you close active accounts,
you could fall into an unacceptable situation.
5. Don’t co-sign for a loan or mortgage for
someone else.
You may have the best intentions, but if
you co-sign for any type of debt for someone
How’sBY SHERRY BAKERMORTGAGE BROKER
F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6 your town bowmanville 29
Proudly representing
else, you are 100% responsible for the full
payments incurred on that loan. This extra
debt is added to your expenses and may
throw your ratios out of line.
6. Pay your bills.
Although this is still good advice for people
purchasing homes, it’s more often an issue in
a refinance situation. If you are just waiting
on the proceeds of a refinance in order to
consolidate some debts, you must continue
making your payments as scheduled. If you
choose not to, it will reflect on your credit
bureau and could impact your ability to get
your mortgage.
7. Save closing costs.
Typically the lender wants to see you with
1.5% saved up to cover closing costs. This
money is used to cover the expense of closing
your mortgage, like paying your lawyer for
services. You might think that because you
can’t take out new credit to buy furniture,
you can use this money instead. But if you
don’t pay the lawyer… you won’t be getting
your house, and the furniture will have to be
delivered curbside. And it’s cold in Canada!
8. Don’t change your real estate purchase
contract.
Often when you are purchasing property
there are things that show up later, on an
inspection, and you might want to make
changes to the contract. Although not
a huge deal, it can make a difference for
financing. So if financing is complete, it is
best to check with me before making any
changes to the purchase contract.
9. Don’t list your property for sale.
If we have set up a refinance for your
property and your goal is to eventually sell
it, wait until the funds have been advanced
before listing it. Why would a lender want
to lend you money on a mortgage when you
are clearly going to sell right away (even if we
arranged a short term)?
10. Don’t accept unsolicited mortgage
advice from unlicensed or unqualified
individuals.
Although this is least likely to impact the
approval of your mortgage, it’s frustrating
when people who don’t know your unique
situation give you unsolicited advice about
what you should do, making you second
guess yourself.
If you have any questions at all, I am more
than happy to discuss them with you. I
am a mortgage professional and I help my
Dominion Lending Centres clients finance
property every day. I know the unique ins
and outs, dos and don’ts of mortgages.
In summary, the only thing you should
do while waiting for the advance of your
mortgage funds is to continue living your
life as you have been! Keep going to work
and paying your bills on time!
What about after your mortgage has
funded? You are now free to do whatever
you like! Go ahead… quit your job, go to
part-time status, apply for new credit to buy
a couch and 78 TV, close your credit cards,
co-sign for a mortgage, sell your place, or
soak in as much unsolicited advice as you
want! It’s up to you!
It is good to note that if you do quit
your job, you should make sure you have
enough cash on hand to continue making
your mortgage payments! The funny thing
about mortgages is, if you don’t make your
payments, the lender will take your property
and sell it to someone else and you will be
left on that curbside couch.
If you have any questions, please get in
touch with us here at Dominion Lending
Centres!

BY HOYS GARAGE 1. Get the right kind of oil change. Oil tends to thicken as it gets
colder, and if it’s too thick it won’t do the best job of keeping your
engine lubricated. Check your owner’s manual for guidance about
which oil to use in different climates and temperatures.
2. Make sure you can see. When’s the last time you replaced your
windshield wiper blades? They usually work effectively for about
one year, so be sure to invest in some new ones if you’re due.
3. Give your battery a little TLC. This is an ideal time of year to
make sure your battery’s posts and connections are corrosion-free
and that your battery has all the water it needs.
4. Examine your belts and hoses. When you have that full service
done on your vehicle, make sure the belts and hoses get checked for
wear and tear — even if you’re driving a modern car. Cold weather
can do a number on belts and hoses, so they deserve attention.
5. Check your tire pressure. Your tires must be properly inflated
to ensure you’ll have the best possible traction as you drive along
— and traction is often severely jeopardized in wet, snowy or icy
conditions.
6. Think about switching to snow tires. Our winters are prov-
ing to be a challenge for getting around. When shopping for snow
tires, ask about all the fees that might come into play, such as fees
for mounting and balancing. You can accomplish this easily and
make accurate cost comparisons by asking each store for the “out
the door charge.”
7. Do you have four-wheel drive? If so, it’s important to check
the status of your four-wheel-drive system and be sure it’s working
correctly.
8. Get the antifreeze mixture just right. Aim for having a 50-50
mix of antifreeze (coolant) and water inside your radiator. This
will prevent the mixture from freezing even at ridiculously cold
temperatures.
9. Prepare an emergency kit. Store this stuff in your trunk during
the winter months, especially if a road trip is in your future: a blan-
ket, extra boots and gloves, an extra set of warm clothes, extra wa-
ter and food, including hard candies, an ice scraper, a small shovel,
a flashlight, windshield washer fluid, flares, jumper cables, a tool
kit, tire chains, a tire gauge, a spare tire with air in it, tire-changing
equipment, a first-aid kit, a bag of abrasive material such as sand,
salt or non-clumping kitty litter, which can provide additional
traction if a tire gets stuck in snow.
10. Keep the gas tank full. Not only can it be lifesaving if you get
stranded, but it will also prevent the gas lines from freezing.

Tips To Winterize Your Vehicle
F A L L / W I N T E R 2 0 1 5 / 2 0 1 6 your town bowmanville 31
1. Deducible, Deductible, Deductible A deductible is the amount you pay before your insurance
coverage kicks in. It’s also called “self-insuring” for a specific
amount. The higher your deductible the lower the risk to the
insurance company in terms of cost and in terms of how often
you will be inclined to make a claim. The lower the risk, the
lower the cost of the insurance.
2. Use Your Policy Wisely Insurance policies were designed to protect your property in
the event of a significant or catastrophic loss. You want and
need your insurance coverage when a loss such as a fire or
hurricane destroys all or a portion of your home, business,
cottage, boat etc. Don’t be inclined to make small claims for
$100 here or $200 there. It will end up costing you more in
the long run.
3. Make Sure You’re Not Paying for Duplicate
coverage Do you pay for insurance coverage on your credit cards? Have
you purchased creditor insurance with the bank to life
insure your mortgage or line of credit? You may also
have personal life insurance or group life insurance through
your employer. Talk to a professional insurance advisor about
your life insurance needs. One policy may be all you need and
the monthly savings could be an eye opener.
4. Buy Life Insurance When You’re Young and Healthy The cost of life insurance can vary significantly based on your
age and your current health. Life insurance costs increase
with age. A person in very good health can potentially receive
a “preferred” rate. Existing health conditions may increase the
cost of your life insurance or prevent you from getting the
coverage altogether.
5. Maintain Your Home to Avoid Disasters What is the condition of your roof, your furnace, your
electrical system and your plumbing? Are there potential
liability issues on your property such as missing railings on
staircases or pot holes or uneven surfaces on your property?
Keep your property well maintained and safe to avoid possible
costly disasters. You may be insured for the loss, but the loss
of your home or personal property can be very emotional and
stressful.
6. Consider Insuring Your Home and Auto
Insurance with the same Company
Most insurers now provide multi-product discounts as well as
multi-vehicle discounts. If you’re shopping for car insurance,
have the insurer quote your home insurance as well.
7. Use Winter Tires Many insurers now offer a “snow tire discount”. Makes sense.
Snow tires are safer and prevent accidents.
8. Investigate the Cost of Insurance Before you Buy
that New Car or Home There can be a big difference in premium to insure a rural
property versus a home in an urban area. Is there a woodstove or
oil heat? The make and model of your next car can impact
your auto premium. Consider calling your insurance advisor
before making that big decision.
9. Install a Back-Up Device on Your Sump Pump Water coverage has become very expensive. Your insurer may
offer a better rate or a discount if you install a backflow device.
A battery back-up is also a great idea in the event you are wit
out power during a storm.
10. Review Your Coverage Regularly Are you receiving all the discounts available? Is your boat or
trailer insured? What about your ATV? Have you started a
home based business? Are your kids away at school? Have
you renovated or updated your home? Do you now have
an in-law suite? Did you install a pool? Do you know how some
of these changes impact your coverage? An annual review of
your coverage is invaluable. Know what coverage you have,
and what coverage you don’t have.
