NOTICE BOARD

THANKS to West Norwich Lions

for funding the colour cover in this

edition — the first such cover in the

magazine’s 35 year history, and probably a ‘one-off’.

The Lions meet every 2nd and 4th Wednesday at 8pm in the

Brook Hotel, Bowthorpe. New members are alwaysw

welcome. See contact details in A to Z on page 24.

STOLEN BENCHES RETURNED

Bowthorpe Heritage Group would like to thank the many people

who expressed concern at this theft, and to all those involved in the

recovery of the benches. They are now back in the Community Gar-

den for everyone to enjoy.

There is a story behind them. They come from Dubai and were

made by a group of disabled people in a workshop there. They were

bought by a former airline pilot who is now retired and living in

Bowthorpe. This resident kindly donated the benches to the

Community Garden.

A POLICE SURGERY will be held on 19th October

at the Wendene shops . We will be there between 12 and 2pm.

You can come along to speak with your Neighbourhood Policing

Team.

THANKS to our local Roys Store

for funding another ‘first’ - the equipment to

flood-light St Michael and All Angels Ruin. .

Details on front and back cover.

New Day 2013 makes a difference in Bowthorpe Young people from the New Day camp at the Norfolk Showground were busy volunteering in Bowthorpe at the end of July.

Teams from the 50-strong group carried out surveys with residents, asking what they like about the area and what could be improved. The results from this will be used by Bowthorpe Church, Norwich City Council and local police to help shape future work in the area.

Police Community Safety Officers also worked with some of the young volunteers in the Roys car park, cleaning shoppers’ cars – a task that proved very popular with both residents and the volunteers themselves.

The Bowthorpe Heritage Group members were also grateful for some extra help with cutting grass and clearing weeds in the community garden at Tolye Road, while another team helped tidy up the grounds of St Mary’s Church in Earlham.

The finale of the three-day visit was the new and hugely successful Teddy Bears’ Picnic at the community garden. The event, which was funded by Norwich City Council, took place on 1 August, with around 80 residents enjoying refreshments and sweet treats made by the volunteers. There was plenty of fun in the sun, too, with activities such as face painting, colouring and badge making with Cotman Housing Association staff.

The three-day event ran from 30 July and was organised in partnership by Bowthorpe and Earlham Church, Norwich City Council neighbourhood services and the local police Safer Neighbourhoods Team.

This is the fourth year running the project has taken place with young New Day volunteers coming to work with local people.

The plans for new build on the Three Score development moved a step closer in July.

NorseCare , Norfolk’s largest older person’s care provider, managing residential

services for Norfolk County Council, was given funding from the Department of

Health.

With this funding, and working hand in hand with the City and County Councils ,

NorseCare will be moving ahead with developing a care scheme to be made up

of 78 one bedroom and 14 two bedroom housing with care apartments. These

will have landscaped gardens and community facilities.

This development is due to start in March 2014.

Bowthorpe Police Station Norfolk Constabulary Wendene Norwich NR5 9HA non emergency Tel: 101 [email protected]

.

Your Bowthorpe Policing Team has not stopped for a summer holiday. Quite the opposite; we have extended our shifts to address your concerns on anti-social behaviour that increases with people congregating in the open places over the warmer nights. To this I would like to thank you all for providing information and sharing your concerns with us. I know that not all concerns can be resolved immediately but it is only with you telling us your problems that my team and I can start addressing the issues. Already we have cleared up fly tipping in Joe Ellis Court and Notykin Street with one person being arrested. One person was fined for providing alcohol to underage teenagers. The stolen benches from the community gardens have been located and returned with one person being interviewed. Other people have been arrested for various offences including causing public disorder in the street and possession of drugs.

But it is not all hard work; we’ve had the pleasure of joining in with the many sum-mer events across the community. We are always interested in hearing about any event in the community. We have seen many of you at the events that included the CloverHill Fete, the FA’s 125th anniversary at the FDC, events at the Bowthorpe Community Gardens, and car washing for the New Day Project at Bowthorpe Church. On the 4th September we will be supporting Redwings charity and local vets in a wildlife day for the various horses on Bowthorpe’s commons.

Likewise we are always keen to hear any ideas you have to promote our neighbour-hood or how we can be making a positive difference to the community. You can contact us through our non-emergency number of 101. We will be holding a Police Surgery at the Wendene shops on 19th October. We will be there between 12 and 2pm. You can come along to speak with your Neighbourhood Policing Team. Should you have information please contact us by dialling 101 or through crime stoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111. It is with your continued support that we can make Bowthorpe one of the safest areas of Norwich in which to live. And it is with your continued ideas and suggestions that we can continue to make a positive difference to our community.

As I write, the news at the moment is dominated by the struggles in Egypt between the Armed Forces and the Muslim Brotherhood; the latter upset and angry that their legitimately elected President has been deposed by the Army, and the former concerned that the elected President was not ruling

for all Egypt’s people.

But this conflict is just one among many conflicts around the world. Most are

smaller, personal conflicts between families and within families. St. Paul

wrote, `If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with

everyone… Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with

good’ (Romans 12:18, 21).

This month, if you are in conflict with someone, try spending a little time thinking about it, even praying

the following prayer.

God of peace,

whose mercy embraces all peoples and nations:

tear down the walls which divide us,

break open the prisons of unforgiveness which hold us captive

and so free us to celebrate your peace in all the earth;

through Jesus, our Peacemaker. Amen.

Until next month, Revd Mark Elvin

ASHWELL COURT

Hello once again.

Well, we did at last get a summer! The weather has been lovely and

hopefully you have all enjoyed the sunshine.

Life at Ashwell Court has been busy and eventful. At the beginning of July several of us went to the Holiday at Home event. This was a very well run

and enjoyable event held over two days. We have continued with our weekly Bingo sessions and with the TV Antiques Road Show being filmed so close to

home – at the Sainsbury Centre at the UEA – some of us (fans of the show) went along but were careful

to avoid the many TV cameras there so we should not appear on the programme (so no stars were born!).

Another enjoyable addition to life here is an exercise session with instructions from a video specially produced for more “senior” members of the community. These twice a week sessions in the common room have

proved to be both enjoyable and exhilarating.

In August we enjoyed a lovely Ham Salad Tea – our thanks to Caroline for all the work involved. Afterwards we were

treated to an in-house entertainment by two of our residents, Tony playing the keyboard and John the harmonica. The programme consisted of well-known

popular songs from the 40s, 50s and 60s which we all joined in!

Many of us went to the Summer Fayre, organised by the three Cotman

schemes in the area and held at Bullace Road. Our two representatives, Margaret and Judy, worked hard collecting for and running the Craft and

Bric-a-Brac stall. The afternoon was fun and the hard work of all involved was appreciated.

Recently we had a lovely afternoon’s entertainment from Patsy Rose which

we all enjoyed, particularly the more lively dances at the end! It was a very happy afternoon.

Let’s hope we still have some more lovely weather to come this autumn as

we are looking forward to another mystery tour with our friends from Bradecroft in September.

Well that’s all for now. Best wishes. Margaret

BRADECROFT

Hello everyone ,

Hope you’re all keeping well. I have quite a lot of news this month.

THREE NEW RESIDENTS First I must welcome our new residents. I hope they

will enjoy our social life outings, and bingo etc. We went to CLACTON ON SEA, July16th, and what glorious weather we

had. We all added to what little suntan we already had, and made the ice cream queues even longer. It was too hot to walk far. The

gardens along the sea front were at their best, so we were able to sit amongst the flowers,

enjoy our ice cream and watch the world go by. Unfortunately our friends from Ashwell Court were unable to join us this month.

We had a BINGO EVENING on 25th July and as usual this was well attended..

August 14th we had our TRIP TO GREAT YARMOUTH. Again God gave us

another fine, warm day. Everyone enjoyed themselves. Plenty of shopping was done.

Now we look forward to our last outing this year—A MYSTERY TOUR. Who

knows where we will end up. I think only the coach driver knows.

Then Christmas time we will be going out for our lunch, so still something to look forward to.

So fare thee well ’til next time. . Pat

Rainbows, Brownies and Guides.

Well, the summer weather picked up even-

tually, but rain and clouds do not stop play

where Girlguiding is concerned. Ever hope-

ful Rainbows and Brownies from Bowthorpe and Costessey worked on the Seaside Chal-

lenge badge: they “blinged up” seaside

buckets, made sea creatures out of chocolate

and other materials, sailed mini rafts, and many pirates attended the barbeque. All this

hilarity wasn't enough for these girls and

leaders; they went to the circus and have now

gained their circus performer badge. Of course it is not all about play. Brownies must

do good turns so they set about doing a litter

pick for their community. Guides have more

challenging adventures and 4 girls went off to a Baden Powell camp to complete their

badge and Georgia was accepted for a place

MP visits new nursery in Bowthorpe Local MP, Simon Wright, visited the Banana Moon Day Nursery last month after hearing about the new facility while canvassing during the recent local elections. The nursery is located within the grounds of Bowthorpe Hall and was opened in April this year. Privately owned by Norwich couple Rachel and Aaron Kelly, it caters for children from 3 months to 5 years and offers the popular government funded places for 3 and 4 year olds - Mr Wright was keen to see what the setting had to offer. During his tour of the nursery he met with children and staff and was shown how the nursery approached the different areas of learning including growing their own vegetables in the large garden area. He also saw the newly developed special sensory room which gives children the opportunity to experience different sounds, textures and colours; an aspect of early years care which is sometimes overlooked and is proven to be particularly beneficial to children with special educational needs. It’s fair to say he was impressed with what he saw. Mr Wright said; “I was delighted to visit Banana Moon. It’s a great new nursery, in a fantastic setting and it provides much needed nursery places. Research shows that early years education has a huge influence on a child’s future prospects, and I’m pleased that more children and parents can now enjoy the benefits.” More information on Banana Moon can be found at www.bananamoon-norwich.co.uk
