Life members of Box Hill Athletic Club

President’s report

The running of a large athletics club is a team effort. Although the modern busy lifestyle that we lead means that many organisations such as ours have difficulties finding volunteers, Box Hill has made great progress in building a group of enthusiastic and dedicated members helping to grow the club.

Thank you to our hard-working committee. Our secretary, Michelle Atkinson, has helped to keep the administration of the club running smoothly. Simon Evans is a diligent treasurer, with many ideas to help build the club and look after our finances. Steve Dinneen has worked tirelessly promoting the Whitehorse Twilight and the Box Hill Classic, bringing more competition and kudos back to our track. Simon St Hill acts as our Box Hill Athletic Club committee representative on the ground management committee and Barbara Johnson and Angela Robbie are our unofficial event organisers. Jeremy Griffith has made a big contribution to our strategic planning and marketing, while Rachel Limburg, Mitch Dyer, Tony Marsh and Steve Ellinghaus have presented the athletes and coaches perspectives on the committee. Graeme Olden has also contributed with his experience and intimate knowledge of the development of the club.

The work of this committee along with our coaches, team managers, club helpers and of course the athletes themselves has led to another successful year for the club.

Our teams won a number of Athletics Victoria premierships - three in the winter cross country and road racing season (XCR’18) and two in the summer track and field season (AV Shield).

Our members won many state and national championship medals, while Georgia Griffith, Zoe Buckman and Chris Hamer were selected for the Commonwealth Games, Nana Owusu-Afriyie competed in the World Junior Championships and Harry Summers ran for Australia in the world cross country championships.

After having very few events at Hagenaeur Reserve in recent years, the club hosted eight events this summer season: the state relay championships, the lower grade Zatopek 10 races, the milers club twice, the high velocity club twice, one round of shield competition, as well as two special competitions organised by the club. Special

mention to Steve Dinneen who, with help from Peter Stefanos and many others, ran two very successful competitions at Box Hill.The Whitehorse Twilight meet was held in November and the Box Hill Classic in February, with Harry Summers’ club record in the 3000m being one of the highlights.

While the Athletics Victoria cross country and road racing competition appears to be growing, there has been a concerning decrease in the number of athletes looking to compete in summer track and field club versus club competition. Whether this is due to changes made by Athletics Victoria to the format on summer competition is unclear, but it is certainly an issue that the club and the state association will need to address as interclub competition is still the main “product” that we offer our members.

Another issue facing the club is the increasing fees athletes must pay to register with Athletics Victoria and compete in shield competition. The basic fees have more than doubled since 2012, while the Box Hill club fee has remained constant over this period. If we aim to grow our membership in the face of increasing costs we must offer a quality product and look at innovative ways of gaining and retaining members.

Finally, I would like to thank all those who have helped me since I took on the role of club president in 2011. The club has had only three presidents, Graeme Olden, Colin Organ and myself since the Box Hill Amateur Athletic Club combined with the Box Hill Women’s Athletic Club in 1996 and I believe it is time for a new person to take on the role. I encourage all members to look for ways to support the club so that we can continue to thrive into the future.

Winter report

Box Hill had another highly successful cross country and road racing season in 2018 (XCR’18).

Our men’s teams dominated the competition and we should all appreciate this golden era that has seen Box Hill win the men’s Premier Division premiership for the third year in a row and the fifth time in six years.

Congratulations to Nick Baggott, Steve Dinneen, Matt O’Donnell, Will Potter, Harry Summers, Andre Waring, James O’Connell, Michael Dowel, Alex Ritchie, Sam Dipnall and Klarie McIntyre, who all contributed to this success.

To underline our distance running depth, Box Hill also won the Division 2 men’s premiership. This is a great achievement to win the top two divisions. Our other premiership was won by the Over 50 men’s team who dominated their competition winning every one of the nine rounds of competition.

Our women’s team struggled this year and we failed to fill a team in several competitions. This has led to our team being demoted to Division 2 for 2019. Although this is disappointing, it gives our team a chance to rebuild. With many talented young female distance runners in the club, we will no doubt be back in the Premier Division before long.

Individually, Harry Summers won a silver medal in the 15km road championships and Andre Waring a bronze medal in the 12km cross country championships. Harry, Andre, Will Potter and Nick Baggott all finished in the top 20 at the national cross country championships in Queensland.

Our juniors performed well at the Victorian All Schools Championships with Ashlee Treagus winning the gold medal in the Under 16 4km event. Thomas Diamond won a silver medal in the U15 4km race and Sam Rattray also silver in the Under 20 8km race.

In other events, Scott McKenzie won the U20 race over 6km at Cruden Farm, where Ashlee Treagus finished 3rd in the U16 race. Lachlan Doehmann won the U16 road race over 3km at Albert Park.

John Meagher (50-54 years) and Garth Calder (55-59 years) were declared the individual winter champions in their respective age groups, each winning their age group in multiple events, while Julie Norney and Pia Hunter also won their age group in several events.

At the Melbourne Marathon Klarie McIntyre ran a PB of 2:32.38 to win the bronze medal in the Victorian state title, while John Meagher put in a brilliant performance to record a time 2:37.15 and smash the Australian record for his age group (55-59 years). Harry Summers had a big win in the 10km event at the Melbourne Marathon Festival, running a time of 29:23.

The outstanding cross country performance came after our winter season had finished when Harry Summers finished 3rd in the trials for the World Cross Country Championship and was selected to run for Australia in Denmark. There he performed admirably to finish in 56th place against the world’s best distance runners.

John Meagher (55-59 year) and Julie Norney (50-54 years) both won the 8km cross country events at the national masters championships .

Thank you to all the athletes who supported our teams this XCR season and thank you to all the parents and supporters who have been there to act as time keepers or club helpers or have supported the team in other ways. A special thanks to Ian and Megan Sloane for their help and support.

Let’s hope that we can continue the club’s distance running success in 2019!

Summer report

Shield competition After a rare failure to win any shield premierships in 2017/18, Box Hill won two premierships this year. Congratulations to our Under 16 boys and girls teams who both won their respective AV Shield premierships.

The Under 16 boys team of Axel Woods,  Jordan Liang, Jeremy Shum, William Moxey, Matthew Dougan, Bailey Culbert, Advaith Prabha, Jack Armstrong, Jack Mclean, Ewan Webber, Harry Chen, Jordan Abbott, Zachary Matters, Bede Waters, Milton Simopoulos, Eli Taylor, Andre Di Medio and Johnny Suares dominated their age group final to win by more than 1200 points. Congratulations to all these boys and to all the other U16 boys who helped the team get through to the final and to team manager, Colin Woods (assisted by Sam Culbert), for all his help and organisation of the team.

The Under 16 girls team of Jennifer Lim, Holly Nieuwenhuizen, Carly Senior, Ella Doherty, Charli Power, Eve Parry, Carla Dreyer, Ashlee Treagus, Ruby Maher, Mia Pope, Breanna Croall, Sienna Hillberg, Georgia Tayler and Tess Parry put in some great performances to win a closely fought contest. Congratulations to these girls and all the others who competed for this team throughout the year. Thanks also to Justin Doherty for all his help in organising this team.

Andrew Wilcox organised the men’s over 40 team that finished 2nd in the Shield final, while our Open Men Division 1 and Open Women Division 1 teams were, unfortunately, not at full strength in the finals and both finished in fifth position.

International competition Last April Georgia Griffith and Zoe Buckman represented Australia in the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast. Chris Hamer was also selected but was unable to compete due to injury. Georgia and Zoe both competed in the final of the 1500m, with Georgia finishing 5th in 4:04.17 and Zoe 12th in 4:06.41. Georgia went on to run 2:00.73 to miss the final of the 800m by the smallest of margins. Later in the year Georgia raced in the USA and improved her 800m personal best to 2:00.13

Nana Owusu-Afriyie (pictured above) ran for Australia in the 4x100m relay in the World Junior Championships in Finland. Nana has now been selected to for the open relay squad for the world relay championships in Japan later this month. Nana, along with Georgia Griffith and Georgia Hansen (1500m in 4:11.52) have all run times to qualify them for the World University Games.

Andrew Wilcox performed superbly in the World Masters Indoor Championships in Poland to win the world title in the 50-54 years 400m event in the time of 53.44

Australian Open Championships Georgia Griffith and Nana Owusu-Afriyie both picked up silver medals at the Australian Track and Field Championships in Sydney. Georgia ran the 800m in 2:01.26 and Nana the 200m in 23.64 (-1.2)

Australian Junior ChampionshipsBox Hill athletes picked up 10 medals in the underage competition. Congratulations to our national champions, Doug Buckeridge, Johnny Suares and to Samanatha Olsen, who was a part of the U20 gold medal winning relay team.
