Vale lest we forget

LEGACY CLUBThe Rev. Gordon McKenzie (a very accomplished organist) was our entertainer at our October meeting. He soon had our toes tapping to music we all knew. The ladies enjoyed his performance and we certainly had no trouble hearing the music.

The November meeting will be held on 16th November. This is the last meeting for the year, but we still have Christmas lunch in the Upton room on Tuesday 8th December. Money will be taken at the November meeting.

Best wishes to all those who are in hospital or unwell at home. We hope to see you soon.

Thought for the month... "Truly great friends are hard to find, difficult to leave, and impossible to forget."

Pat Douglas, Legacy

The Sub-Branch has been informed by the Author, Steven Cooke, of our recently published book, “The Sweetland Project” that has been shortlisted in the 2015 Community History Award (Centenary of Anzac category). It’s certainly a feather in the cap of Box Hill RSL.

Our next trip is on 25th November

We have a limited number of seats remaining on the bus to see the exhibition “You Gotta Laugh” at the National Vietnam Veterans Museum. The bus will leave the RSL at 8.00 and include lunch at the Phillip Island RSL.

Contact Kathy (Welfare) on 9898 2044.

1 SCUTTLEBUTT BOX HILL RSL

One Door Shuts – Another OpensAfter seven years of conducting the Cubs/Scouts night at the RSL, Colin Holt and Jock McCormick have decided to call these nights quits. This is due mainly to Colin’s age and Jock having to travel so far. Over the past 7 years, we have entertained some 62 Cubs Packs and their families, and I have to say there were never two groups the same.

Being hands on, the groups were totally intrigued with Colin Holt’s presentation of his “Morse” code experience. Then there was Jock’s talks about how the conflicts evolved. Good fun was had trying on various uniforms and matching them to either the Berets, Caps and traditional Slouch Hats.

I asked Colin and Jock to name some of our most memorable nights and they came up with the following. Jock asked one particular group who invented the Cubs/Scout movement? After some deliberation, one little guy shoot up his hand and yelled “HITLER.” No doubt you can image the reaction from the Cubs leaders and families, not to say ourselves.

Another that comes to mind was the question posed to another group of what “ANZAC” stands for? Generally we would get the correct answer, but in one case a young girl stood up and her answered “Newfoundland”. Where that came we couldn’t work out. Another group was asked this year on the 100th anniversary of Gallipoli, “Who was at Gallipoli”? A quick answer made back from a youngster was the “Americans to Germans”.

How many sausage rolls, pies and soft drink were consumed over these years, we cannot estimate but they all enjoyed this part of the evening along with the tours of the Memorabilia.

There are many great nights that we could relate to you our members, but as Colin and Jock told me recently and I have to agree with them it has been an honour and a privilege to have represented Box Hill RSL at Cubs/Scouts night. Having said that, this night is only one of many activities that our Sub-Branch conducts in giving back to our community, and although Colin and Jock have retired, there are plans afoot to continue this night in future.

As they say, One door shuts but another opens.

Brian Tateson, Memorabilia

FREE MOVIE FOR MEMBERS"Scrooged"Thursday, 26th November2015 at 10.30AMPresented by Ray Wall

For our last movie of the year I’ve selected “Scrooged”, a movie with a message!

Frank Cross runs a US TV station which is planning a live adaptation of Dickens' Christmas Carol. Frank's childhood wasn't a particularly pleasant one, and so he doesn't really appreciate the Christmas spirit. With the help of the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, Frank realises he must change.

WANTED Volunteer For Ritual ServicesWelfare provide RSL rituals at funerals and memorial services and occasionally provide speakers for Remembrance and Anzac day services in aged care facilities.

We are keen to hear from any members who might be interested in taking up a role as a ritual celebrant. This is a highly rewarding and meaningful role however the nature of the work calls for volunteers to be available at short notice and have email access and be able to speak in front of up to 200 people. Support and training will be given.

For enquiries contact Faye or Kathy on 98982044.

The club is preparing for its AGM in January and this means that our present Executive Co-ordinator Clif calls for nominations of positions that become vacant. There are still two positions that Clif would like to be filled: Entertainment Manager and Co-ordinator Executive. If you have skills that are not being used and some spare time, here is a great opportunity to join the executive and continue the great work done by the existing committee.

Meetings

13TH OCTOBER

It was Mental Health and Wellbeing Week and to assist all members to celebrate their own health and wellbeing each member was given a Woolworth's shopping bag filled with fruit, vegies and tinned salmon. This was a pleasant surprise for all. Many thanks to Woolworth's! Our mental and physical health were also covered in the show bag with a mind game book and a hat to encourage members to get out into the sun for a daily walk. The Blackburn $2 shop gave donations and the club purchased the puzzle books and little boxes of sultanas and cranberries. The sun hats were purchased from the police using a grant from DVA. Many thanks to all our committee members who worked so hard to put this show bag together.

We started the formal part of the meeting with a presentation on Mental Health and Wellbeing from Nathan Gwoni titled “Lifestyle Breakthrough”.

Nathan covered the areas of nutrition, exercise, sleep and medications. For nutrition we need to eat our daily requirement of proteins, vitamins, minerals and good fats plus at least two to three serves of fish, either fresh or tinned, per week. Supplements are good for us as they help with arthritis. The role of exercise has many benefits. Enjoyment releases happy endorphins which help to treat and manage chronic diseases such as diabetes. The good news is that eating small amounts of dark chocolate is beneficial as it releases happy endorphins. The tough part is that the current guidelines for exercise is 15 hours of moderate intensity physical exercise plus muscle strengthening exercises per week. Nathan tells us that walking to the fridge to get the chocolate is included. Sleep is important and we need at least 6-8 hours per night. Sleep helps us to regenerate brain function and boost neurotransmitter functions. This is all great, however, as you will all agree, getting those 6-8 hours every night really gets more difficult as we mature!!!!!!!

As our medications are controlled by our doctors or psychiatrists we need to be very aware of their impact on us.

Great talk Nathan. We now have lots to think about, especially on how to get up and get going.

Women's AuxiliaryHello Ladies

52 ladies attended our September meeting. Our speaker was Arthur Merryweather (Club Treasurer).

Arthur gave us a real insight on the running of a club the size of Box Hill RSL making us aware how much we have grown over the years. Arthur credited this growth to our last manager John Romero and to the current one Denis Fernando for their great efforts. Arthur has been the Club Treasurer for the past 19 years, so I dare say his job has also grown dramatically. Arthur congratulated Helen Jones (our former treasurer) on how her bookwork was always spot on and I know he will find our new Treasurer Maria Massoud just as capable. We are really lucky to have 2 such capable women. Your money is in good hands.

On Wednesday 14th October we had Special Gems come and show us their wares. It was a lovely display of jewellery – a little more up market than we usually have, but we still had some good sales. This was followed by our lovely afternoon tea. Once again thank you to all who bought a plate.

Congratulations to Brian and Denise Coulier on their 57th wedding anniversary.

Well ladies take care and to all not so well, I hope things will soon improve.

“Remember – Time decides who you meet in your life, your heart decides who you want in your life, and your behavior decides who stays in you life.”

Our New Displays

Members and Guests will notice as they walk around our club, two new exhibitions. The first one is of a Bronze Special Forces soldier “X”. He is close to 7ft tall, and was kindly given on permanent loan to our RSL by Ben Doyle-Cox, who over the years, has been a great contributor to our Memorabilia Department. The Statue of “Trooper X” of the Special Forces is extremely detailed in every respect, and he did three tours of Afghanistan, this tour lasted five months.

In his right hand is his main weapon, a US issued M203 and in his right hip is another means of protection, a Heckler & Koch 9mm pistol. His main weapon the M203 consists of a 5.56mm fully automatic rifle with a 40mm grenade launcher, which is capable of firing flares and shot gun pellets with the main cartridge being a high – explosive bomb with a range of around 75 meters.

Trooper X is always in permant contact with the rest of his patrol, and this is via an ear- piece in his left ear and the microphone attached to his helmet, which can also be seen in the left hand of this statue.

The other display is in the Memorabilia Cabinet at the far end corridor of the Bistro area. This statue is dedicated to the memory of Corporal Paul Ingram. Paul passed away after suffering a heart attack in May of last year. He was the son of Mick and Joan Ingram. Mick, John Haward and I served in Vietnam together in “C Squadron” 1st Armoured Regiment. When Paul passed away, Mike rang me to offer our RSL all his army gear, which I gratefully accepted.

Paul served in Somalia in 1993 with 1 RAR; he completed a six month tour there. In 1999-2000 he was with the United Nations representing the Australian Army in Peace Keeping activities in East Timor as a translator. He returned again from June 2001 to December 2001. Paul transferred to Sigs completing his course at Watsonia and was assigned to 145 Signals Squadron.

Recently, we were prividged to have his parents Mick and Joan, his sister Fiona, and his best friend and comrade in arms, attend our RSL to see the tribute we had given Paul. I have to say, not only were they moved with emotion by the display, but I was as well. They told me it was as though Paul was “just standing” there. This is why working in Memorabilia is so rewarding.

VALE — EDWARD WILLIAM O’TOOLE, OAMTed was known to many people. Both Ted and wife Beth assisted in the formation of many Day Clubs in Victoria. They founded our Whitehorse Day Club some 15 years ago. Their firm foundation is now witnessed by a regular bimonthly attendance of around 90 members plus a waiting list. His death on the 11th September 2015 took him from his family and many friends.

A celebration of Ted’s life was held at the Lilydale Memorial Park attended by 25 members of our Day Club plus a throng of friends, ex-workmates and family. All were lovingly greeted by Beth and the family in most trying circumstances.

Chaplain David Burt conducted the modern pleasing remembrance service. Music and pictures of family favourites were organised by Richard O’Toole. Russell O’Toole delivered the first eulogy with the professionalism of somebody used to holding an audience while telling a relay of funny episodes of his father’s childhood and their family life.

Don Peard gave the second eulogy as a lifelong family friend and teaching colleague. The O’Toole door was so often open for notorious BBQs and socials. A great job by all 4 leaders

in this family celebration.

The Ted we knew in Whitehorse Day Club was a gentleman, a leader, a comic and a good friend to the community. Thank you Beth and the O’Toole family for allowing us all to share that wonderful celebration of Ted’s life.

Clif Hardy Whitehorse Day Club, co-ordinator.
