The appeal in Boxted and Langham is supported by St Mary’s and St Peter’s Churches and by the Boxted St Peter’s and Langham Primary Schools. COLCHESTER BOROUGH LOCAL PLAN: LANGHAM

The Langham Parish Council, drawing on the comments and views it has received from residents in the course of its consultation with them, has submitted its response to the Borough Council’s “Preferred Options” set out in the process that ended on 16 September. The Parish Council’s submission may be viewed on the Langham Village website

www.langham.org.uk The Council is grateful to those who made their views known to it or who wrote independently to the Borough Council.

HEATING OIL SCHEME The deadline for orders for the next delivery of oil under the group scheme is 5 pm on Wednesday 5 October. Orders must be placed in person at Langham Community Shop. There is a fee of £2 for ordering (£1 for Shop volunteers). Delivery will be within 5 working days of the 5 October deadline.

BOXTED EVERGREEN CLUB Members and their friends thoroughly enjoyed a bright sunny day in early September, when they visited the Bury St Edmunds Market and strolled round the beautiful Abbey Gardens. Recent meetings have included one at which members heard a most interesting talk on hedgehog rescue by Paula Baker; another, somewhat more rumbustious, session was led by Sue Pollington, “The Washboard Lady”. Despite the name, you don’t have to be in your autumn years to qualify for taking part in the Evergreens’ varied and attractive programme. Have a word with Linda Tralau on 272710.

LANGHAM COMMUNITY CENTRE

Considerable improvements have recently been completed at the Community Centre. They include new windows and the complete repainting of the Main Hall, refurbishment of the kitchen area with a new quiet electrically-operated shutter, a new rear patio and many other features designed to improve facilities for the disabled and to increase the potential for future hirings. The work was executed by Rose Builders of Lawford. The Community Council thanks the Diana Tinson Fund, Essex Community Foundation, Cory Environmental Trust in Britain and Langham Parish Council for their respective parts in making the project possible. It is also grateful to Roger Newnham, who managed this complicated project on behalf of the village, and Rob Clark, who secured the funding.

BOXTED HISTORY GROUP At the Group’s August meeting, the ebullient Eve Regelous traced, very vividly, the history of the famous London store, Harrods, (She herself had worked at Harrods for 25 years.) The business was started by Charles Henry Harrod in the early part of the 19th century and subsequently moved to the corner of its present site in Brompton Road. Despite a disastrous fire in 1883 the firm was floated on the Stock Exchange in 1899 and rapid expansion followed. During WW2, members learnt to their surprise, the store was used to produce military clothing and parts for Lancaster bombers. After the war Harrods was sold to the House of Fraser and then, in 1960, to Mohammed Al Fayed (for £660m.). The Harrods empire now includes six major stores and numerous outlets around the world, while its flagship store in London employs over 5,000 staff.

Langham Shop and the Churches

LANGHAM WI Brian Cummings, familiar to many as a Volunteer at the Community Shop, came in his scarlet uniform to the Langham WI in September to talk about his life as a Chelsea Pensioner. He described the amazing Royal Hospital building, founded by Charles II and designed by Wren but transformed over the years to provide the present small flats. There about 300 ex-service In-pensioners, who are encouraged to get out into the world. There are also gardens a club, café, medical centre, chapel and the Great (dining) Hall. Members heard about the annual Founder’s Day Parade and of the many famous people who support the Hospital.

Good Neighbours

THE ZONE & EDGE CHURCH YOUTH GROUPS

The two youth groups welcome newcomers. They have a great time with games, sport, music, crafts and discussions: there is something for everyone. Joining is free and there are reasonably-priced refreshments: £1 buys plenty. “Food for Thought” is a Bible-related session that takes place while people are eating and drinking. There are pictures in both churches that show some of the groups’ activities; the latter include weekends away and various outings.

The Zone is for 6-11 years 5.30—7.00 pm

The Edge is for 11 years plus 7.30—9.15 pm

Sessions are on Friday evenings at the Methodist Chapel Schoolroom, Chapel Rd, Boxted. For more information, call Dominic Sheil on 273324.

On 13 October the WI’s meeting will be open to everyone, with tickets at £5 for non-members available at the door. There will be wine and nibbles and entertainment with a 60s theme by Alan Haines.

EDITORSHIP This issue of the Newsletter is the last under my editorship; the November issue will be in the capable hands of Pauline Coverley (see the foot of the front page). I thank the contributors , advertisers, successive advertising managers and the many doughty people who deliver the Newsletter door-to-door for their support before and during my sixteen years in the chair. Long may the Newsletter continue to be of service to the people of Boxted and Langham. IH
