OKLAHOMA STATEARCHITECTURE STUDENT Brad Elsbury LEED AP

THE CONCEPTThe last four years of my life have been more than form, space, and order. It’s above the ide-als of utilitas firmitas venustas. I believe architecture is more than that. Its about passion. The willingness to try something new. To push the bounds in which we are given. To rise above and achieve more than the past. It’s the motivation to literally create the world. It’s to take criticism and refine your ideas over and over again. Architecture to me is to con-stantly think in the ways people live their lives every day. From Dallas, Texas to Beijing, China keeping a manifesto on cul-ture in which I work, live, and play. Architecture is who I am, not just what I do.

This portfolio is all about refine-ment, passion, and the will-ingness to try something new. Enjoy my love through the cards we are dealt.

INTERNSHIP:WDG architecureDallas, Texas

One of the most inspirational moments of my life-from start to finish. The firm let me use my craft in water coloring not only in the office but on the front page of competitions. DIsplayed on the left, is the cover to the portfolio for a competition that we won. It was a three-man team with the concept in my hand. Around the clock rendering, refining, and fine tuning. This was the project that land-ed me my own master plan responsibilities in Tennessee, which gave me the freedom to design and make decisions with the client. It got to the point where I was trusted to only collaborate when need-ed and schedule my own deadlines.

I worked extensively and with minimal supervision on the projects that were individually assigned. From sketch-up to lumion, I worked on master plan-ning of a large retail park with one-on-one conversations with the client listening to there needs and creating there ideal envi-ronment. From H and M flagship stores to REI outdoor.

Internship:

VOA architecture beijing, China

By far, this internship was more about building. It was about understanding culture, not only in language but in how people on the opposite side of the world live and what I observe by sitting for hours with my journal trying to figure out how to design for them. This page shows not only architecture but an experience that can’t be read in books or observed online. From the smells to the fast-pace lifestyle of this 25 million population. I got a chance to design one of the tallest highrises in the world. I engaged in other projects as well such as hospitality and resorts. One of my proud moments at this firm was designing a 3-star hotel on the coast of china.

DEVELOPING HOW TO CONCEPT AND APPLY IT

The projects that I wanted to showcase range from first year model build-ing to abstract velociraptor parking garages done on watercolor. I wanted to try to diversify myself and try new ways to come up with designs. Every project I attempt to approach is different and I try to never go down the same path again in terms of process. I find change expands my develop-ment of conforming to the client or professor and it challenges me to think outside the realm of normality.

ABOVE AND BESIDES THE PROJECT SCOPE

AboveThis was a concept store that we were able to design my first year in architecture school. This project taught me the value of patience and model building, time management and deadlines. I was precise and used a journal to convey my ideas and develop a working plan.

To the rightThe project was a parking garage in our college. I decided to have fun and try something new. I got the idea from Jurassic Park to create a parking garage where velociraptor couldn’t catch you by creating turning points to dodge the dinosaurs just in time. I developed quick refer-ence points to find general approximations to make quick decisions in time crunches.

TAKING WORK TO STUDIO

I got the idea for a hotel from the most unlikely places. I hold a job at the United States Department of Agriculture. I constantly get inspired by the gadgets I use and plants that grow there. I get ideas from plant DNA and really what it looks like. How an organism can take over and protect the nucleus is amazing to me. The project above shows a inner core of brick protected by a outer casing protect-ing the fragile ecosystem of people on the interior. I found that this method gives me freedom to create deeper concepts and explore watercoloring with abstract models and make it come to life.

This is the first project that started my professional school learning. Challenged by professors to use software and push my limits on what I could create. The final board above is my first of many attempts to find my own style. The process can be seen from the larger thumbnails to the smaller section sketches.

This was one of the many projects that I worked on in third year architecture. I think this one can illustrate my process from a general idea to the refinement of a project. The project lasted three weeks from start to finish. One of the aspects that was used is parametric on the structure of the bridge and interconnecting it to the larger beams. This train station solved many of the issues that Italy was dealing with including bridging the gap between four rails and the parking structure all while connecting to the existing building.

FREE LANCE/ COMMUNITY

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTAEI (Architectural Engineering Institute) has an integration design competition with several of the top schools in the nation with different focuses in the build-ing field. This is the event I look forward to the most, every year: the opportu-nity to learn all the different systems and develop them on a engineering level. From HVAC loading to lighting models. These are the things that I find interest-ing in the field of architecture. For the second year in a row, I was in charge of the Integration Team, coordinating the building in design of structure, facade, core, skin, artificial lighting, plumbing, HVAC, and circulation.
