Legal Advocacy: The Legal Advocacy Fund (LAF) works to challenge sex discrimination in higher education and the workplace.

Our resources range from community outreach programs to backing of major cases.

Our Branch’s contribution to LAF at the National Level is due in early December. We will be collecting

contributions from our members at our November meeting. These contributions are tax deductible for those of

us who still itemize on our taxes. Our Branch has a history of proportionately substantial contributions each

year given the size of our membership. Please be generous.

Elizabeth Cady Stanton:

Tuesday night October 18th Peg Inglis and I visited the Yates County New York State Women Inc. They had

special guest Elizabeth Cady Stanton. She was a most amazing individual. She had seven children and was

married to an abolitionist who had his own agenda but

supported her cause. She was never arrested and voted

in New Jersey before it was law.

The actress stayed in character. She knew many details

about her friends Susan B. Anthony, and Lucretia Mott.

She knew many details of a friendship that pushed for

women’s rights and votes for women.

We have her information and will look into having this

outstanding character visit with us, maybe for our

fundraiser.

Women’s Rights National Park is having an open house

on November 12, 2016. Vintage dress is welcome and

our local heroes will be there to talk too! Visit

https://www.facebook.com/womensrightsnps/ for more

information.

Program - Tara D. facilitated a lively dialogue where members shared experiences about "How our Vote

Counts." Three questions guided the discussion -

1. Do you remember political discussion in your youth and how did it shape the way you vote today?

2. When did you cast your first vote and have you ever worked on a campaign?

3. What recourses have helped you form your opinions on the issues?

New members - 3 new members joined - Betty Green, Suzanne Curran, and Marion Tunney. Welcome!

The meeting was called to order at 7:12PM by Suzanne Scott.

President's Report - The pocketbook sized directories were disbursed. At the upcoming District Meeting, we

will share info on our Diversity Event. Suzanne will attend and urged others to as well. There will be a pinning

ceremony at the November meeting to celebrate members who have reached 5, 10, 20 years. With sadness,

Suzanne shared that Barb Stewart had passed. Barb was a charter member and first president of our branch.

In her honor, Suzanne made a motion to make a $35.00 donation to the Steuben Co. Historical

Society. Onalee accepted the motion, Martha T. second, all approved. -

Martha T. will write a letter and deliver it to the Historical Society.

Secretary's Report – Suzanne presented the minutes for the September 6th meeting also published in the

newsletter - hard copies also available. A correction to the start time of the meeting was noted.

Suzanne S. made a motion to approve the report, Bonnie T. accepted the motion, Shirley H. second,

all approved.

Treasurer’s Report – Shirley H. explained that the General Liability Insurance came in $5.00 lower than the

budgeted amount. The reported bank balance as of 10/1/16 is $1,564.04

Public Policy/Diversity – No formal report. Alise read a letter she sent to the Dormann Library regarding the

book she donated. The book is titled, "Creating Peace of Mind" by Jill M. Reid, the daughter of Nancy

Reigelsperger. Ms. Reigelsperger gave the book to AAUW as a thank you for scholarships she and her

daughter received in the past. Alise also mentioned it would be great to see more diversity within our own

branch.

LAF – In November, collections will be taken, which will be sent to National. This is a tax deduction for those

who itemize and any amount is welcome. What does LAF Do? Campus outreach, case support, travel grants,

legal case support and addressing equality in higher education.

Membership – Amanda reminded us to try to bring in new members. Take business cards to pass out. Amanda

discussed the Shape the Future Campaign - a recruitment tool for current members to offer a discounted rate to

prospective members. New members and students can take 50% off the national dues rate when they join on the

spot during an AAUW public event. Branches also earn one free national membership to give away for every

two newly recruited members, with a maximum of five free memberships annually. Amanda is also working on

the Bath AAUW Facebook page. Stay tuned.

Program Report –Sara Love will present an upcoming program on Suffragettes and Ibsen addressing social

change in the arts. Clothes dyeing is another program. Tara noted that Brandon Sailor, who works in

communications/marketing, will give tips on marketing ourselves and other techniques to promote ideas. We

may partner in the future with the League of Women Voters.

Charity Basket – Sally passed the basket. $60.00 was collected at the last meeting.

approximately $6,658.00.

Hallahan's husband is very ill.

$82.9 million has been raised for breast cancer research through this program.

Old Business-

ensure they are politically correct per legal counsel at the National level. Debi will lead making the changes but

any assistance would be appreciated.

Fundraiser - Suzanne reviewed the poll results regarding the Seneca Falls bus trip. Responses indicated that the

trip is too expensive. Alise suggested having our members dress as historical women and read speeches from a

plan for next year. The committee will meet Monday, October 17th, at Noon at the Dormann Library. All
