2009 BRAVURA WORKSHOPS: SPAIN

Scott Christensen June 14-20th 2009

Workshop Description:

Christensen has introduced a new approach to teaching painting -- this workshop is not for everybody. It is designed for the painter who has made a serious commitment to artistic growth and is willing to engage in an intensive study of the fundamentals of outdoor painting. This workshop is structured to cover a lot of territory in a concentrated period of time.

The goal with this intensive workshop is to create an accelerated/highly structured learning environment that will help you achieve breakthroughs that have the potential to change the quality of your work.

This workshop will include classroom lectures, demonstrations, painting sessions, field study, study of deceased master works, Q&A sessions and critiques.

Jeffrrey R. Watts: June 21-27th 2009

Workshop Description:

If you have ever dreamed of painting figures in the wonderful tradition of Sorolla this is the workshop for you!

The emphasis will be on painting the figure and portrait outdoors in the Spanish landscape. We will stage Spanish themed models as we work on harmonizing color, vignettes and creating exciting, spontaneous paintings in the tradition of Sorolla, Zorn and Sargent.

This is a great workshop for all levels. Oil painting will be emphasized, however gouache painting for newer students will be addressed asan option.

GUEST SUBMISSION: LIQUINThere are two important considerations to keep in mind when using Liquin products; first, they accelerate the drying rate of oil paint films and second, they increase the oil paint films’ flexibility.

It is important that the upper layers should not be less flexible than those beneath them. The inflexibility of oil films is something that needs to be considered for their long-term stability, as they will become increasing inflexible with age. This is generally what the fat over lean principle in oil painting addresses.

Small additions of Liquin will accelerate the drying rates of the paint film. However, the rule of thumb for adding liquin to oil color is no more than 1/3 liquin to 2/3 color. A technique to avoid would be mixing different proportions throughout a painting. For example, adding 30 percent in one layer, none in the next,

15 percent after that, and then 5 percent, in the next layer.

Because it is best for the long-term structural stability of paint films that they share a common oxidation process, we recommend that only one medium be used throughout the building up of painting films. Different oils and mediums dry at different rates depending on their individual properties. For instance Stand Linseed Oil dries by the slow steady intake of oxygen. Its oxidation is very different from the Liquin mediums that draw oxygen into their films in short bursts. Because of the extreme differences in the oxidation processes of Liquin and Stand Linseed Oil we do not recommend adjusting the drying time of Liquin by the addition of Stand Linseed Oil. Liquin is however compatible with Refined Linseed Oil and other oils used as vehicles in artists oil paints because of their similar oxidation processes.
