The Beaverton Police Department’s Volunteer

Program was created to form a working partnership between citizens and the police to enhance communications and assist the Beaverton Police Department in the delivery of quality services.

Our citizen volunteers are a cross-section of the community who have graduated from our Citizens Academy and work on a variety of projects including:

Car seat clinics Clerical duties Computer and mapping projects Department tours Distributing emergency food baskets to the needy Home Security Program HomeSafe Program

The program is not designed to have the volunteer replace professional staff, but is aimed at providing a supplementary and complementary role. Volunteers, when given appropriate training, can supplement present services and become a valuable addition to the Beaverton Police Department. In 2012 we had an active roster of 72 volunteers who donated more than 6,806 hours – the equivalent of three full-time employees.

The Beaverton Police Department places a high value on the contributions made by our wonderful volunteer staff. If you would like more information about the program, or how to become a volunteer yourself, please contact 503-526-2562.

BRG HistoryThe Beaverton Resource Guide (BRG) is a free monthly community paper written, edited and published in Beaverton, by Beaverton residents and for the businesses and people of Beaverton, Oregon, USA. Cedar House Media published the first edition in April of 2011 featuring local businesses, community news, and the Farmers Market. That first issue was 16 pages. Today, the paper is 32 pages and sponsored by a diverse cross section of public and private community organizations.

BRG GoalsBeaverton has so many positive attributes and many go unnoticed. The BRG is our way of giving back to the community by highlighting what makes our city a great place to live, work and shop. With a focus on small, local businesses, we’d like to encourage our neighbors to first visit nearby stores and give them a chance before moving on to businesses outside our community.

THPRD: connecting people, parks and natureBoard OKs new logothat’s clean, simple;rollout to be phased

The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District Board of Directors have unanimously approved a new logo -- the rst major overhaul of the district symbol since the founding of THPRD in 1955.“We wanted a new logo that is fresh and modern and future-oriented,” said THPRD General Manager Doug

Menke. “The one we chose signi es diversity, both in terms of our population makeup and the services we offer. We like how simple and clean and readable it is with bold colors. Plus it has an active look.”The words “Tualatin Hills” are purposely larger than the rest of the Park District name because that’s how many patrons refer to the agency. Another reason was to distinguish THPRD from public agencies with “Tualatin Valley” in their names.Approval of the logo culminated a creative process that started several months ago when Frank Creative of Portland was chosen as project

consultant. The district reviewed dozens of design options by the contractor and listened to many opinions before narrowing the choices to one.Because of all the ways a logo is used, and the need to control costs, the district will use a phased approach to rollout. Some applications will be implemented quickly while others will take more time. Full implementation will take years. “We’re excited about this,” Menke said. “It sends a message that we embrace change – even when it comes to our longtime logo. We

aren’t resting on our past. We’re taking on new service and nancial initiatives while also working to better serve our dramatically changed community, and the new logo is part of that spirit of action.”

The district provides year-round recreational opportunities for people of all ages and abilities. A week after his iPad was stolen on the MAX, a 62-year-old

Beaverton man was surprised with a new one, thanks to generous do-nations from the community.

The Portland Nerdfighters and Portland Singing Christmas Tree surprised Gary Meierotto with a brand new iPad at the Mac Store in Beaverton.

Meierotto uses his iPad as his pri-mary means of communcation.

“This is like a miracle, I’m tell-ing you,” said Meierotto. “Like a miracle.”

The groups spent a week collect-ing donations from the community to purchase the new device.

“We just wanted to make sure he had the very best iPad,” said Willy Dolan with the Portland Singing

Christmas Tree. “It’s already loaded with everything he needs to com-municate with friends and family. We also got him a nice case so he can hold onto it so nobody can take it from him.”

Meierotto was on an eastbound

MAX train in southeast Portland when two men began being aggres-sive toward him.

When the train came to a stop at the 102nd Avenue transit station, one of the suspects grabbed the iPad right out of Meierotto’s hands

and ran off the train.

Police have not recovered his stolen iPad, but now that he has a new one he can once again commu-nicate with family and friends out of town.

“For the Portland Singing Christ-mas Tree, he’s a gentleman who comes to our shows every year and he’s our biggest supporter in terms of enthusiasm and love,” said Dolan. “He’s an amazing man.”

Meierotto’s new iPad is loaded with security features including tracking software and password protection.

Shipwrecks occurred with alarming frequency

in early coastal seafaring history. Violent storms, heavy seas, and hidden reefs plagued sea captains as they brought vessels across the mouths of rivers into port. One of the most tragic and documented maritime disasters on Oregon’s South Coast was the wreck of the 223’ Santa Clara. The wooden steamship was inbound on her run from Portland

the port of Coos Bay. About 60 passengers and crew were aboard, many from the Portland area, as well as 6,400 pounds of parcel post mail, personal household possessions, and Christmas merchandise. In the late afternoon of November 2, 1915, she struck an uncharted shoal at the entrance to Coos Bay.

Captain August Lofstedt faced a critical situation. The ship was

the engine room. Steering gear and wireless radio were inoperable. Lofstedt ordered lifeboats lowered.

shore, drowning eight women and children. Captain and six crew members were in the last lifeboat. Its ropes broke; all were tossed into the roiling water but swam back to the ship to await rescue. Badly injured survivors suffered from exposure, burns, and broken limbs. Exhausted and cold, they waited for help.

Several factors hampered

immediate assistance. Churning surf, heavy rain, and fog delayed the Coast Guard lifesaving station at Charleston. Locals loaned cars to drive the living and dead to

physicians arrived as quickly as possible, but the 18-mile trip from town meant driving on mud wallow roads. The site was otherwise accessible only by trail.

The Deputy U.S. District Attorney found no maritime laws forbidding the taking of salvage. In his opinion, state rulings prevailed. Parcel post was the exception. Federal law prohibited tampering with mail, providing an opportunity

began an investigation that continued until the following summer.

By the third day, the ship’s owners hadn’t given merchants permission to retrieve the goods. Exasperated retailers hired men to board the vessel and take what they had paid for. A free-for-all of looting followed, fueled partly by casks of

liquor the “pirates” opened and distributed. The raiders threw the booty ashore, keeping piles of food, ship’s

themselves. An attempt to facilitate the plundering by placing dynamite under the bow failed.

Canned and paper goods, clothing, and anything else of value that wasn’t salvaged or pirated were destroyed by leaking oil and water.

Within a week, arsonists torched the wreckage, burning nearly everything to the waterline. Metal thieves continued to make off with boxes of linotype, engine parts, and brass.

Lofstedt stood trial for negligence, pled guilty, and lost his master’s license. Insurance inquiries, lawsuits, and petitions arose and were settled the following year. It was eventually determined the ship’s steering gear was not working properly before she went to sea.

Underground Railroad in Newport Indiana from 1826-1864.

Keli has been married to her husband, Frank Meyers for 30

girl, and one grandson. She is getting her degree in Genealogical Research through the National Genealogical Studies, specializing in American Records, and African American Ancestors.

Keli and her family have been part of the Northwest Civil War Reenactment Group for the past two yrs. where she teaches about the UGRR to the public. She also travels and teaches in Salem, Portland, Lake Oswego, and Gresham school districts.

The Underground Railroad was a secret network organized by people who helped men, women, and children escape from slavery to freedom before the Civil War.

Adds Hours; Celebrates First Anniversary

The Aloha Community Library Association has expanded the

library hours from 29 to 37 hours

interest and community support of the library. Currently, 2-3 trained volunteers are available for each hour of operation. With this expansion, the library is now open from 10am to 8pm on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, and from 10am to 5pm on Saturday. Family storytime continues to be offered each Wednesday morning from 10:30-11:30am.

On October 20th, the Aloha Community Library Association held its annual members' meeting and a community open house to

operation. The open house, held in a nearby vacated Blockbuster Video building, included live music by

library patrons about the impact the library has made in their lives, and the presentation of a $15,000 check to the library by Washington

County Commissioner Dick Schouten to help the library begin planning for a larger space.

In November, a number of events will be held including a "Scrapbooking with Betsy" event from 6:30-8:30pm on Tuesday, November 12. For the latest information on programs and events check the library's calendar at alohalibrary.org.

The library depends on volunteers, cash donations and book donations to keep going and growing. Stop by the library and check us out!

Change is Coming to Aloha!the County approves building projects and road improvements, we see those projects progress all year long. Lots of new housing in the works. The widening of roads to improve safety and reduce congestion is in various stages of development.

Change is coming to Aloha. No, we are not likely to become part of either the City of Beaverton or Hillsboro any time soon. Although my GPS says I'm in Beaverton as does the Oregon DMV when residents renew their driver's licenses. Perhaps that is in our future.

The Aloha Business Association is in it's 3rd year of existence and has about 70 current members. When we started in February of 2011 we wanted to provide a forum for Aloha business owners

to gather and meet each other, and build a stronger community. With limited resources from our annual $60 dues, we have provided the

Exploring the Wonders of 3D Printing and More!

The Round is thrilled to announce our newest Tenant,

BOGZA. Timothy Bogza founded

illustrations and animations for clients working in architecture, interior design, master planning and urban design.

BOGZA is currently expanding into new markets including trial animation and 3D printing.

What is 3D PrintingFor years, architects have used

sophisticated drafting programs like Revit and ArchiCAD to create realistic 3D simulations of their projects. Unfortunately, when these architects prepared to show their work to waiting clients, they

ink models and a lot of words to describe their projects. 3D printing technologies hope to change all that, allowing architects to move directly from drafting to holding a fully dimensional model in their hands.

3D printing begins with a 3D

drawing made in a computer. The printing program then cuts that 3D drawing into very small, very thin horizontal sections, and each section is printed and stacked, one on top of the other. Most architectural 3D printers use paper, but some printers also accept metal, plastics or even ceramic. When the printing is complete, the model is a freestanding work of art.

3D printing is also relatively inexpensive. While it might take a craftsman days in order to build a model to scale, a printer might be able to spit out a completed project in a matter of hours!

Q&A with TimothyQ: Timothy, why did you move your headquarters to The Round?My goal was to find a larger and affordable creative space that also offered other necessary qualities to suit the company's needs. The Round proved to be an accommodating location for both staff and clients in terms of convenience and community.

Q: What were you looking for in your new space?The Round had several elements

that made it an ideal location to headquarter our company, but I especially appreciated that it had a solid balance of modern influence, community, and accessibility. It's exceptionally close to public transit and near a main highway which provides easy access for staff and clients while simultaneously offering a community-oriented atmosphere.

Q: How was the transition into The Round?SKB (the local real estate private equity firm who owns The Round) was wonderful to work with. They saw our vision and supported us through the whole transition process.

Tim also noted that he is one of the few established firms operating on both a local and national scale within the Portland-Metro area that specializes in architectural 3D printing.

I have a confession. I loathe bell peppers! Admitting this often

makes me feel like a failure as a vegetarian but I am afraid that it is the truth. Red, yellow, green – it doesn’t matter. If you want to kill a pizza for me, top it with bell peppers. When I tell this to people they are often appalled that I won’t make an exception for roasted peppers, which they seem to think do not taste like bell peppers. Ugh! The mere thought of it makes my stomach churn. There is only one recipe in which I can tolerate bell peppers and that is in this salad from my friend Liz, a cooking instructor in San Diego. The tasty sweet and sour dressing does something to the peppers to make them acceptable to my taste buds.

Besides being delicious, Marinated Cabbage Salad is super simple to put together and gets

dull after a couple of days but it

a day ahead of time which makes it my go-to recipe for parties and pot lucks. Believe me when I tell you that you will make this dish often, even if you are a bell pepper hater like me.

Q. What gave you the desire to specialize in cheesecake? Is there a story behind this delicious empire?

It was just one of those things. I was working in Pennsylvania. I had a penchant for baking, and would bring cheesecakes into the

crazy for them. This made me very happy. Before long coworkers were paying me to make cakes for every occasion. It was a Buddha moment. I thought, “Wow, I can get paid for something I really love to do!” I started doing research on where to establish my business. Living in Pennsylvania, I chose

Having moved here from Texas a little over a year ago, I am

Northwest. The cool weather, the changing of the foliage colors and the falling leaves help to create an atmosphere of appreciation for all things autumn. I am one of those who enjoy the hustle and bustle of the season. My mind whizzes with plans and preparations for Thanksgiving. What size turkey do I need? Yum... . turkey.. . .but more about that later. How many pies do we bake? Who's bringing what? The list goes on

and on.When we put aside all of the

stress and chaos of planning the

perfect celebration, we afford ourselves the opportunity to experience the true meaning of

Thanksgiving. What are we thankful for? For most, it is time with family or cherished memories thereof. For some, it is for the bounty that has been bestowed throughout the past year. For kids, small and large alike, we wait all year for one perfect golden brown turkey which we then devour in mere minutes. Not all turkey is roasted. We choose to lovingly slow smoke

Art On Broadway announces a new exhibit titled “Nature

Inspired” featuring work by Elaine Tan and Gretha Lindwood. Tan’s artfully handcrafted jewelry and Lindwood’s evocative paintings in oils or pastels celebrate the diversity of the individual artists’ engagement with nature. Tan explains, “Born and raised in Hong Kong, I bring with me a multi-cultural sensitivity to my art. One of my passions is the process of weaving together a symphony of colors, textures and design. To me, nature itself is art in its purest form. That is why I love to combine the use of natural semi-precious stones, organic materials, metals, stones and other materials to create a design that displays a delicate mix of balance vs. asymmetry, simplicity vs. complexity, much like the balancing of “yin and yang”.

Lindwood’s love of nature is evident in her landscape paintings. Working with oil paints on canvas or pastels on sand paper, Lindwood paints primarily en plein air, a French term meaning in the open air. She points out, “My Swedish parents made sure my sister and I received plenty of fresh air and playtime outside, and we went on many family hikes and campouts. I guess I was destined to work outside.” She adds, “I often hear comments about how a viewer can imagine themselves in the scene I’ve painted.”

Patrick TakataMost high schoolers start off

their working careers by

burgers or busing tables. Rare is the teenager - or adult, for that matter - who can make money off their artwork, but that’s exactly what Beaverton High School junior Patrick Takata has accomplished.

Takata has been doing art for three years now, dabbling in painting, abstract drawing, and

the artist scratches an outline

plaster. He also enjoys sculpting, ceramics, and public chalk art, which he does with his friends. Depending on the size, it usually takes Takata one to two days to

June of this year. Since then, he has sold four more paintings to various buyers. Recently, he set a new record for himself, selling a painting for a personal high of $135. It was the largest piece he’s sold yet at 16 inches by 20 inches, done in acrylic paints. Inspired by his love for music, he painted a stylized Daft Punk helmet after one of his favorite bands.

Originally, he had made a smaller version of the painting and posted a photo of it on instagram, where he showcases much of his work. One of his followers saw the picture and responded, “I love this! Could you make a larger version?” to which Takata gave an enthusiastic “Yes!”

Not only does Takata sell his artwork, he also sells T-shirts with his good friend, Andrei Eugenio,

another junior at Beaverton High. Takata and Eugenio have been in the T-shirt business together for two years now. They use a silk screen on polyester cotton shirts to do their prints. “We can create any design as long as it

said Takata. So far, they’ve sold over 500 shirts at $15 dollars each.

Takata hopes to continue his artwork in the future. His goal is to attend the University of Carr where he plans to major in Fine Arts.With so much success so early on, he’s sure to shine wherever his future takes him.

Popular display opens Nov. 29 with more than a million colorful lights

The Oregon Zoo invites visitors to brighten their holiday nights

at ZooLights, where sparkling lights and brilliant hues transform the zoo into a winter wonderland. Presented by Toyota with support

from The Boeing Company, the traditional holiday light show begins Friday, Nov. 29, and runs through Jan. 5 at the zoo.

This year’s ZooLights promises a more immersive experience, with visitors moving in a continuous loop around the zoo through areas that haven’t been lit up before. One spectacular new section through the zoo’s Africa Rainforest features a twisting, 100-foot-long rainbow-colored tunnel of light.

Much-loved displays from previous years are back too. Life-

size 3-D animals gather on the zoo’s concert lawn, which transforms into meandering river of light. Hippos graze near the water while crocodiles lie in wait. Other returning favorites include leaping reindeer, trumpeting elephants, playful penguins and tobogganing polar bears.

The zoo railway is temporarily out of service this year as construction crews lay tracks for a new route designed to provide better views. While it won’t be offering rides, the famous Oregon steam engine will be decked out in holiday

On the preliminary list of "need-to-knows" are a used car's make, model, mileage and purpose. Choosing prospective makes and models of vehicles can be a tiring and frustrating process, but if you want a car that will last more than a month, there are some simple

steps you can take to ensure your purchase will be a wise one. 1. Look around you on the

highways and parking lots. If you see a certain vehicle in abundance on the roads, it usually means the car has a good track record and that's why it stays on the road longer.

2. Do your own research. Hundreds of publications list the reliability of vehicles. "Consumer Reports" tests the reliability of thousands of products every year, and automobiles are one of their specialties. Taking a look at their guide to the most

very enlightening. They also perform tests on important things that you would be unable to do for yourself. For example, it

would be almost impossible for you to know how many times a used vehicle could break down over the course of ownership.

3. Obviously, a used car comes with some baggage. Set a reasonable goal for yourself

regarding mileage and wear-and-tear on your prospective vehicle. Consider things like a factory warranty. A vehicle that is only a couple of years old and has, say, approximately 20k miles on it, is likely to

have a good bit of a factory warranty remaining. A good consideration for this vehicle may be purchasing an extended warranty or mechanical breakdown insurance policy.

4. Why do you need it? How many miles do you think you’ll be putting on the car? If it's reliability you need, your decision is easy. If you need a reliable vehicle that also has dual airbags, seven cup holders and a four-speed automatic, these details will further narrow down your search and make

the choice even easier. So take into account your needs when you research models so you know what is standard fare on the vehicle in question.

5. Unlike new cars, used cars can't be ordered to your preference.

In some ways, you have to "luck out" to get the ideal vehicle. But keeping your eyes and ears open helps. Start your used-car search, before your vehicle need is critical so you can keep your options open

6. Lastly, like the commercial says, always ask to see the CARFAX on any pre-owned vehicle you may be considering. This could prevent you from purchasing someone else's headache.

Monday, This Must Be Christmas, by Pat Cook opens November 22nd at the Beaverton City Library Auditorium. Wise cracks and plot

in this yuletide whodunit, featuring down-and-out gumshoe, Harry Monday, when the Harrigan's department store payroll goes missing, along with the store's St. Nick. With only one day, Christmas Eve, to solve the case, can Harry piece together the clues,

Portraying Harry Monday and new to the Beaverton Civic Theatre stage is Aloha resident, John Ollis. Ollis appeared most recently as Wizard in HART's Once Upon A Mattress and he frequently performs with Forest Grove's Theatre in the Grove.

I know that I am not alone in my adoration of animated

movies. Ever since I was little, movies made by Disney, D r e a m w o r k s , and Pixar have always fascinated and entertained me with their beautiful art and magical plots. In fact, I have many fond memories of watching movie after movie in marathon sessions with my older brother which was sometimes even more entertaining than seeing them in theaters. But out of all of the talented creators of the scores of animated movies I’ve been privileged to see, Hayao Miyazaki will always be my favorite. As a writer, director and producer, Miyazaki not only entertained me as no other can but he also gave my imagination wings to soar to new heights and new places.

This past September however, with Miyazaki announcing his retirement, I would like to celebrate his work and to urge any of my fellow teens to do the same: watch

yet or rewatch the ones you have. Talk about them, share them or if you’re like me, say a prayer thanking the man who brought me along on so many wonderful journeys to places so unique and gorgeously drawn that somewhere in my imagination, I know they exist.

Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli are always extremely clever and uniquely creative. For example, Spirited Away is about a young girl forced to work for spirits in a bathhouse after her parents are

Academy Award, and it’s obvious why: it has a gorgeous combination of detailed illustrations, a masterpiece soundtrack, and exciting writing. My favorite

Moving Castle, which follows the adventures of a teenaged girl who is turned into an old women and then befriends a strange wizard. The combination of fantasy, steam-punk styled setting, and historical details make it so much fun to watch!

One aspect I really appreciate

that he uses female protagonists... and they aren’t all princesses! In a lot of Hollywood movies,

that every heroine has to be royal, which is a bit overused in my opinion. Miyazaki created girls

with strong qualities and bright minds, and they did not have

to be nobility. I think that

appealing to an older audience, since us teens don’t need the usual ‘fairy tale’ mold to be excited about a movie. Miyazaki sometimes also

focuses on stories involving important

social issues like helping the environment. Nausicaä

of the Valley of the Wind, for example, is clear in its message to people of all ages that the Earth must be cared for and protected.

self-publishing is on the rise, thanks to a few rock stars like Amanda Hocking, John Locke, and Colleen Hoover. But, what about the other quarter million self-published titles? Is a self-published book a quality book? That’s a question the Northwest Independent Writers

Tales of a Beaverton Super-Mom: Now that's Embarrassing!

It appears that my current purpose in life is to embarrass my 6th

grader. Initially I could pinpoint my transgressions to some of my more outrageous behaviors, such as humming along to the music playing in the grocery store, waving at someone I THOUGHT I knew but actually DIDN’T, or having the audacity to ASK a question when I didn’t understand. Now, though, I’m getting a bit confused about what causes the humiliation: some days it’s because I’ve dressed too hipster and some days because I’m too dowdy; often it’s from making a joke

of the left when someone calls my name. And the only reason I can tolerate all this nonsense is because I GET it. I get how life looks when you’re 11 and somewhere between

Fortunately, I still don’t embarrass my 9 yr-old, who actually requests to hear about my uber-interesting life. Recently she was quizzing me on my marital history, and I was enjoying the little trot down memory lane—remembering the good, the bad, the things that happen when you’re together 20 years. I thought the
