rides Essence had the privilege of meeting wedding photographer Kathryn van Eck at a bridal fair held in Cape Town in 2013.

Kathryn please tell us about yourself.A: I am 34 years old. I am a jeans and t-shirt girl! I have two cats whom I love dearly.

Im a romantic and love seeing couples in love. I do gymnastics which keeps me strong and fit which helps when carrying around heavy cameras and lenses!

Where did you grow up?A: Cape Town, Edgemead.

What made you choose photography as a profession?A:A total love for capturing images and making memories.

Did you study photography?A: I have done a basic course as well as workshops but no official degree.

When did your passion in photography first begin & what do you enjoy most about it?A: As a child I loved taking pictures but it really grew when I got my first DSLR camera in 2009. I enjoy capturing special moments between people most.

How long have you been a wedding photographer?A: 3 years.

How many weddings do you photograph per year?A: About 15-20 at the moment.

What sets you apart from other photographers?A: I take a personal interest in each couples story and pay special attention to their needs. I try to do all I can to make them

feel comfortable in front of the camera and give them the best service I can.

Are you planning on doing something different in this years wedding season?A: I want to work on being more present in every moment which is something I feel is very important in wedding photography.

What are the latest photographic trends and have you implemented any of them?A: I prefer to work on my weaknesses and improve my own work and not follow trends.

What do you offer in your bridal packages?A: I offer a variety of packages- albums, engagement shoots and Thank You cards. I am flexible with my packages though, so couples get what they want.

Do you take pre-wedding photographs?A: I am open to the idea of it if the couple requests it. I do offer engagement shoots which I find work well giving me a chance to know the couple better and vise versa.

Do you have any advice for Brides on how to choose the right photographer?A: Make sure it is someone you feel comfortable with as your photographer will be with you for a large part of your special day.

Do you have a favorite pose for Brides?A: I love the veil shot!

What is your preferred equipment brand?A: Canon.

Do you use a Mac or PC? Which do you prefer?A: Mac.

What lighting equipment do you take on a shoot?A: I only use a flash, no big lights etc. I use flash both on and off camera.

What is your favourite photography accessory, other than your camera?A: My off camera flash triggers. They changed the way I photograph dancing at the reception.

If you had to choose one lens which one would it be and why?A: I love my 70-200mm f2.8 lens, it produces the softest most romantic images. How important is Photoshop in your final images?A: I dont like to over-edit images, I edit as little as possible so the final product is still a real reflection of the couple

  • Brides Essence had the wonder-ful opportunity of meeting with Nitida Wine owners and founders of Cellarbake@Nitida, Peta and Bernhard Veller. We chatted to them about the upcoming Cellarbake@Nitida event and learned more about the origins of Nitida.

The History of Nitida and the accidental wine farmersNitida Wine Farm was purchased by the young couple, Peta and Bernhard Veller, in 1990 whilst pursuing a modest estate to accommodate a growing family. Nestled on the southern slopes of the Durbanville wine valley, the small-holding, being far greater a piece of land than was anticipated, came lock, stock and barrel with 50 sheep, two cows, an old nag named Jackeroo, a sheepdog and a beaten up old 1971 Ford tractor, aptly named Pufford, as well as an invaluable farm assistant, Klaas. Farm living soon became the lifestyle.

Having not initially been reared as a wine producing entity, the farm had but one small vineyard dedicated area. 1992 Saw the first official vineyard plantation administered by Bernhard and Klaas. Bernhard, a chemical engineer by trade, and Peta, his wife, an Advertising industry specialist, aimed to brew just a few barrels to begin; the hobby quickly escalated to a full time wine-making business and

by 1995 Nitida had produced its first Double Gold Sauvignon Blanc.

Nitida became renowned for their niche-market handmade wines and in 2001 was accredited as a benchmark Semillon producer. Peta and Bernhard have kept to using only locally grown grapes which truly represent the fertility and uniqueness of the Durbanville terroir which delivers long, slow, cool ripening conditions and intensely nutritive soils.

Nitida was named Top Producer at the 2009 Michelangelo International Wine Awards; the Coronata Integration 2012 scooped up the highest honour of five stars for two years consecutively; and the 2013 Michelangelo International Wine Awards granted Nitida Calligraphy 2011 a Double Gold.

Dining at NitidaIn late 2007 Cassia Restaurant was born. Its tranquil setting beside the farms lake offers unsurpassed views of the adjacent vineyards. Cassia, currently owned and managed by Warren Swaffield, offers an unpretentiously upmarket atmosphere, catering both indoor and al fresco dining on the terrace.

  • 28 Brides Essence.com - Issue 12

Tables@Nitida, the farms second resident restaurant, came about in November 2010. With its surrounding lawns, natural amphitheatre and childrens play area, Tables makes for a great family restaurant year round.

Weddings at NitidaIt would have been a shame for Nitida not to have a wedding venue on such a picturesque estate with its beautiful backdrops. The wedding and conference venue at Cassia can accommodate up to 250 guests, and with its newly fitted all-glass exterior, it boasts exquisite views of Nitidas picturesque setting, making for a magical reception which seamlessly merges with the beautiful surrounds. The reception facility is also equipped with its own kitchen and bathroom facilities.

Nitida is able to match a couples budget, within reason. Great service, world class dining, exquisite surrounds and a team that focuses on your personal needs and requirements places Nitida firmly on the wedding venue map. Cassia offers all inclusive packages leaving the bridal couple free to relax and enjoy themselves and focus on the true essence of their day.

Ceremonies can be held outdoors on the terrace under a pergola overlooking the lake and lush greenery. Should the weather turn inclement then the conference room can house your guests for the nuptials, which can then be converted into a dance floor as you move to the adjoining wedding facility.

There is also a dedicated award winning hair stylist based at Nitida who can prep the ladies for the day.

Peta Vellers advice to brides: There are some fantastic wedding coordinators out there, but there are far more not so great ones, so choose wisely!

The roots of Cellarbake@NitidaCellarbake@Nitida is the brainchild of Peta, inspired by the trending artisanal baking style paired with her passion for wine.

  • Local influencers of koeksisters and melktert also played a role in her conceptualization of this fabulous new bake and wine pairing movement. Baking is now a culinary art with specialists popping up worldwide, says Peta, what better way to enjoy the sweet things in life than with a delicious glass of wine! It is these entrepreneurs who create new ideas, markets and industries that tickle the taste buds and offer new experiences.

Nitida will be hosting the first annual Cellarbake@Nitida festival on Sunday 23 March 2014. This all-day event offers visitors a chance to sample a variety of bake and wine pairings with a take-home Cellarbake@Nitida wine glass, fantastic kids kitchen and ample innovative, creative and interesting activities for the whole family!

ild Ferns has captured the remarkable benefits of purified Bee Venom from New Zealand combined with Active Manuka Honey in a range of products that provide a regenerative skin therapy treatment.

Venom from the Bee is renowned for its ability to create a younger looking complexion by stimulating the skin to encourage collagen and elastin production, helping to firm and plump facial tissue. Not all Bee Venom is equal which is the reason Wild Ferns have used VENZ purified venom to ensure you get the highest quality available, which is also ethical and humane.

Bee Venom is a unique multi-component complex that has 18 biological active compounds, found to have pharmacological activity. The main groups of compounds are enzymes, peptides, aminos, sugars, phosphololipids and volatiles.

Bee Venom contains a number of unique low-molecule peptides and miracle enzymes such as Phospholipase A2 and Hyaluronidase.

Advantages of using Wild Ferns Bee Venom with Active Manuka Honey Phospholipase A2 dissolves the skin cell membrane and allows other ingredients to penetrate into the skin cell, resulting in a product working more effectively.

Hyaluronidase enhances the delivery of different active ingredients across the skin barrier. It is very important for fighting dermal aging, as the aging process significally decreases skin penetrability. As we grow older, hyaluronic matrix responsible for the moisture retention in our skin becomes tougher and low-permeable. Hyaluronidase accelerates disintegration of the old molecules and activates the synthesis of new molecules of hyaluronic acid by skin fibroblasts, thus improving skin penetrability.

Other Bee Venom peptides, such as Melittin or Apamin are also known to provide additional anti-aging effects to skin:

Melittin is beneficial forthe red blood cells and supports normal blood circulation in

the deepest layers of the skin, thus improving metabolism and stimulation cell regeneration as well as elastin and collagen production.

Bee venom peptides stimulate facial muscles, thus providing a lifting and plumping effect.

VENZ (Venom New Zealand) have invented a collection device for venom that doesnt kill the bees. The device consists of a glass sheet that is put at the bottom of the beehive. The glass sheet conducts a gentle electric current. When the current is turned on, bees that are on the sheet automatically stick out their stingers, and the action of the muscles pushing the stinger also pumps a small amount of venom out the end of the sting. The venom falls on the glass where it is collected and purified for storage, it is freeze-dried to ensure that the venoms bioactive materials dont oxidise and decompose. It takes one million stings on a collector board to make 1g of dry venom.

Start 2014 off with a bang!

  • Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 33

This year has started off with a bang with many of us asking ourselves where has January gone? In the past, the year only gets going around the 24th of January, but it seems this year was an exception with everyone heading back to work around the 10th of January. Back to business as usual!

Every December holiday, my husband and I rest as much as possible and once we feel refreshed, we tackle the next year. We look at our budget, our time management, our long- and short-term goals and we revisit the past years successes, failures and highlights. It gives us an opportunity to reflect back on the year, and look forward to the next year. We discuss what has worked and what we have not succeeded at. We revisit our budget to make sure it reflects our goals and family values. We discuss our time management to make sure it is in line with these goals and that we are not missing any gaps.

As an engaged couple you might have discussed finances in your pre-marital counselling and thought about budgeting and planning of your finances. Unfortunately

many couples do not discuss their finances, which leads to problems later on in their marriage. I would strongly encourage you to discuss finances, budgeting and goal setting regularly.

It is a fun activity where you discuss your dreams and goals. Your short term goals are those that will happen in the next year, for example saving for a dream honeymoon. Longer term savings are a five or ten year plan, saving up for a deposit for a home, for example. Once you have discussed and agreed upon your goals, set up your budget.

A budget is all your income less all your expenses. Your net income (i.e. your take home pay) less all your monthly expenses. These include: saving; rent; electricity; water; groceries; petrol and entertainment to name but a few. After deducting all your expenses from your income you want to be left with a positive balance. Revisit your savings to make sure it makes provision for your short and long term goals. If not, reduce expenses elsewhere to save adequately. Once you have decided upon your goals it becomes easier to make the sacrifices knowing what you are saving towards.

What are your goals and values as a couple? As a couple starting out, it can be lots of fun discussing your goals and dreaming about your future together. Set these visions early on in your relationship so you both know what you are building towards.

    The Bachelors & bachelorette ideas

believe that most couples will want to keep it clean. Sometimes, in the heat of the moment, regrettable things do happen. This is important to remember when planning a bachelor and bachelorette party. It is better to soberly plan things in advance than to

hungoverly regret not doing so. A night of pub crawling is possibly one of the oldest clichs when it comes to the last rumspringer. This generally leads to amnesia, and for the things that can be remembered, the strong desire to have amnesia. Dont do anything that will haunt you for the rest of your days. Remember this should be a celebration of your new life that is about to begin and not a homage to the life you are about to lose. Ask yourself the question : Why am

I getting married?First we will start with the bachelor party : There is no harm in guys

having some good clean fun that does not transcend morals

and societal laws. This does not necessarily eliminate the fun but opens the door to good clean fun. I have attended my fair share of bachelor parties and some were really good fun. What are the things that guys like doing together most? This is a good basis for you to plan your own or your friends bachelor party.

    1. If you or one of your friends have access,

a week-end away at a rural location is a great place to

have a good party with loads of man stuff to do like fishing, MX

and quad biking, climbing, clay pigeon shooting. This can fill the

time with good clean activities with your mates. This, however is not an option accessable to the masses but is a great way to get away from all the flower choosing and looking at endless pictures of wedding cakes et al.

    2. Have a road / mountain biking day, if you and your party are able. This is a great way to spend a day with you buddies with some competition that will quell your testosterone. Be sure to have the correct skills, gear and expertise dont overdo it lest you spend your presumed wedding day in traction.

    3. Ever thought of having a LAN gaming session. This can last for many hours, is great fun and no one gets harmed. Nothing like hunting your buddies in a first person shooterhehehe!!! Have some drinks and eats, but this should keep you busy far into the night.

    4. A day of Zip-lining is another way for the guys to have a fun outing. These are usually located in some picturesque location with some awesome treetop surfing. At the end of the day, settle down to a meal at a local eatery to finish off your activities.

    5. Similar to option number 3, you could always have a paintball session, which is a little more hands on but just as much, if not more fun. This is also a relatively safe way to spend your bachelors.

    6. Consider having a golf day. There are many golf courses in your area that will be only too happy to cater to your party. Finish it off with fine dining at the establishments restaurant. Make a reservation and celebrate in style. Ask the groomsmen to organise some fine cigars to enjoy after your meal.

    7. If you have access to the beach or a big enough lawn and some kit, you could have a volley ball contest.

  • 8. Have a braai. Although this is our favourite pastime, this is just another reason to have an even bigger and better one. This is also generally one of the most economical ways to spend your bachelors which may be a wise choice considering the upcoming costs of the wedding.

    9. For the sophisticated gentleman, there is always an evening of poker or games. This may sound a little obsolete but it can be more than you expect and not leave a huge hole in your pocket.

    10. Go white water rafting. There are a number of suitable and accessable locations in South Africa where you can spend a day or even a weekend together with the lads working as a team, trying to survive. Do bear in mind that this can be hazardous, especially in the rainy season, so do your homework before committing.

For the ladies. I suppose the question for the ladies is the same as for the men : what do girls like to do most? I would reckon (please forgive my ignorance as a man ) SHOPPING!!! I could be mistaken, however the idea is for friends of the bride to spoil her, to shower her with good things and to help her relax as there has been a tremendous amount of pressure on the bride with all the planning and arrangements. Take this time to be pampered or to pamper.

    1. Perfectly apt is to have a pamper party. A day spa is the ideal place for this. However if it is not within your budget, there are many salons that will accommodate your party with a mani, pedi and culinary delights. You may even find a crew that will be willing to offer pampering in your home. If they are not able to cater then you could always organise some made up snack platters. Ladies you could get together and make the eats yourselves.

    2. Go shopping. The bridesmaids and friends of the bride can pool some cash and

take the bride shopping. Spoil her rotten and finish off with coffee, drinks or some fine dining.

    3. Paintball ( as mentioned for the guys ) is also an option for the girls. Why not? Whats good for the gooseis also OK for you. This can be a perfect way for the bride to take her mind off things and have a great nights sleep afterwards. Oh yes, try not to pucker the bride with bruises as this may create more stress than relieve it.

    4. Dress up the old style hen party required the bride to be to dress in toilet paper, or something equally inane, and be ridiculed or laughed at by her entourage. They would make her do silly things that would belittle and ridicule her. I think this does not edify or create an atmosphere of calm. However, you can still have fun if you want to go this route but rather create an atmosphere of peace and love as the main goal.

    5. Plan a hike for the day. A great way to spend time together and you wont feel

    6. Have a sleepover with your girlfriends and watch chick flicks together. Loads of popcorn, snacks and good friends will be a wonderful memory to add to your collection and is also a great way to unwind. You could incorporate a lingerie party into your evening.

    7. Book a weekend away somewhere if you can afford, or if you or one of your friends has access to a place where the girls can go to spend the week-end together that will suffice. It is about time out and time off.

    8. Have a fine dining experience at a posh restaurant. Make sure they have a chocolate fountain!! Dogs are mans best friends and diamonds are a girls. Chocolate is a girls second best friend. Remember that chocolate has sustained you this far and now that you have the diamond, you may have neglected that old faithful friend :D

    9. This one is just food for thought. Sometimes the best way to happiness is to help someone else find theirs. Organise a day or evening helping out people who are less fortunate than you. You could spend some time at a shelter for kids or take a group of them to the zoo or park. This is most certainly not traditional but remember - it is more blessed to give than to receive.

    10. Have an old style games evening with your favourite childhood board games. There are so many to choose from. One could indulge in the pursuit of Trivia, Monopolise some real estate or play charades (these are only suggestions and are not the express opinions of Brides Essence or the contributors of this article).

That is not all folks, the last section deals with joint bachelor / bachelorette party ideas (and no, not the reefer kind of joint !!!). It is becoming more and more popular to have Coed parties. This can be more fun than you think. Another great aspect of this option is that there is a higher level of accountability. There will be no worrying about any unsavoury shenanigans that the other party may have gotten up to.

Without further ado, here they are :1. Paintball guys vs girls. This

can be an awesome load of fun for the bridal

party. The scales may be a little off balance so you could mix it up with coed teams. End the day off with a braai and some good laughs about the days activities.

    2. Ball room dancing lessons. There are a number of establishments that would

be only too happy to accommodate a crowd. Not only is this a sane way to spend your time together but most youngsters today dont know what a waltz is, so it has many benefits to not only the bridal couple but also the groomsmen and bridesmaids as well.

    3. Karaoke night. This is a good way to unwind and have some clean fun while youre doing it. Serenade your bride to be. Party on

    4. A Casino evening is another way to enjoy a jack and jill party. Organise some friends to act as croupiers, some finger snacks and dress to the hilt. Have a place where the guys can enjoy a cigar and the girls can taste some wine or fine Belgian chocolate.

    5. A day out somewhere. Be it hiking, biking, climbing or picnicking there are so many options to choose from. A picnic is a sensible idea as the guys can play touch rugby or volley ball and girls can chill out and gaggle or join in the fun and have their own volley ball game. Whatever you decide, let it be something that the bridal couple enjoys doing

together and expand on that. Regardless of where

you have the party or what it is that you do,

plan for the bridal couple to have a time filled with

fun and fond memories to kick start to their new life together.

A Save the date card is becoming almost as important at the invitation itself these days. They are early reminders to your guests to keep the date open for your pending nuptials and alert the guests to expect an invitation. This is especially necessary for guests that may need to travel and gives them a chance to plan, book flights, accommodation and get time off from work etc. Early notice means more guests will be able to attend. The general timespan to send them out is between 6 - 9 months before the wedding. This also helps get

more concrete numbers for planning purposes in terms of tables, reception, bar and favours creating less stress. Save the dates can introduce the tone and mood of the wedding. It can be anything really, postcards, magnets, photographs etc. The information needs to be brief, as more detail should be shared in the formal invitation. Details that should be included are: The couples names, clear date and venue and a note that the formal invitations will follow.

    The Bridalemergency kit

    by Grant Derrick

THE DRESS :TOO BIG OR TOO SMALLThe best way to overcome this is to try the dress on about a week before the day. You are not going to swell or shrink considerably in a week and you will have enough time fix the dress. However if it is on your day, there are some pointer to help :

If your dress is too small and the zip (zipper for Americanese people) wants to go home then a simple safety pin can be used inside the dress to hold the zip in place as long as is needed. Some needle and thread can also provide a quick make-

shift solution. Another thing that will help is to avoid carbonated drinks and processed grain products as these can bloat you and thus aggravate the problem drink still water instead. Have a high protein breakfast or meal before the wedding and dont gorge yourself on pancakes. For a sticky zip you can use some candle wax along the offending part of the zip. Even some lip balm can grease that sucker up.

Too large a dress can also be disastrous but a quick solution is to create a dart or pleat just under the armpit of the dress where it is least noticeable. Again a safety pin or

  • quick stitch in time saves nine whatever that may mean but Im sure it will certainly save one gorgeous bride.

THE ZITIn Africa we have a word reserved for such catastrophes Eish pronounced aysh. A good word to use repeatedly if you find an unsightly pimple on your wedding day although it may not make the nasty blemish go away it is a good start. Once you have repeated said expletive at least 3 times you can go about finding a solution. One thing to try is a block of ice on the spot to reduce swelling. DONT PICK!!! I wont go into the details of zitting but be gentle. Use some oxy cream to dry it out and avoid oily base as this will simply aggravate it remember what happened to Krakatoa when the pressure inside was too much? ( If you are not 140 years old then you may not remember the tabloids so google it ). Use a powder based blush to tone it down.

STAINS, SMUDGES AND SPILLSDont fret. Somewhere, someone has some sparkling water or club soda. This is great for removing unsightly marks. VERy IMPORTANT always dab starting at the outer edge of

the stain and work toward the centre; not outwards lest you make a mountain out of a molehill. For oil based marks such as mascara or oil you can use baby powder to soak up the worst of it and dust off. you can also do some dabbing with a tissue. A hair dryer is the quickest way to dry your dress seconds and certainly only a few minutes, unless your spill is from falling into a lake, in which case.PANIC!!!! Some white chalk or powder can also temporarily hide stubborn stains if youre in a fix. A pencil eraser can be quite a handy tool for removing scuffs and marks from your dress. Worst case scenario you can find an old lady and borrow her brooch to hide the spot.

RINGSFunny how this is a fear rattling around in every brides mind. You know how men can be and can you really rely on your husband to bes party animal buddy who can barely remember which way his trousers go on because he had a few too many brews the night before? No problem, there are any number of guests / family who would gladly loan youre their rings in an emergency. Alternatively simply use your backup set in your emergency kit.

BOUQUETProblem? Missing? grab a handful of the nearest flowers from an arrangement, from the garden look around and find something Weddingish and grab that. No one is going to notice that you have improvised, just up your strut and lift your chin and dont sweat it.

GLOWING (perspiration to men and sweating to animals )This can be a serious issue. If it rears its head then your response will be to worry about it, raising your stress levels which will cause you to glow more which leads to more stress and then becomes perspiration and with even more stress your system will resort to its Cro-Magnon animal type sweating. OK so lets nip this in the bud. Make sure that you use a good anti-perspirant roll-on or stick. This creates a good barrier and keeps you dry. What about your make-up. Dab ladies, dab. Get some tissue and gently pat your

affected areas. You can touch up your make-up with your emergency kit. In all of the above situations take a few minutes and calm yourself down. Have something cool to drink and take a few deep breaths. Get a lacy fan to match your dress and keep it in your emergency kit everyone will think that it is part of your ensemble. Crying can ruin your mascara or make it clump. Dont add more mascara as this increases the clumping. Take a toothpick and from the bases of the eyelashes gently separate them.

GUEST PROBLEMS / FAMILy FEUDSPersonally I think that people who cause trouble at weddings are simply selfish. Your wedding day is your day and not anyone elses. A harsh rebuke will quell some fires but it should not be unacceptable for you or your groomsmen to ask a misbehaving guest to leave. You would rather remember one guest missing or leaving than having many guests embarrassed or upset because

  • Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 57

of one selfish person. My opinion if they are not going to suck it up to bless you on your wedding day, then perhaps they should not have been invited. A tip here to note prior to the wedding is to seat feuding parties on opposing sides of your wedding and reception and buffer them with friends and neutral parties in between.

CAKE TROUBLEA damaged cake can take the joy out of your day, but only if you let it. You can always turn the cake to hide the spoil and re-arrange the decorations, if they are moveable. You could cover the damaged area with your bouquet positioned strategically.HEAD-ACHE, NAUSEA & GENERAL MALADIESThese are some of the greatest joy killers at any wedding. The stress that encumbers any wedding can wreak havoc with your body and may manifest unexpectedly in numerous unpredictable ways. The best remedy is NOT TO PANIC!!! ( unless you accidentally fell into a lake ). Just take a few minutes alone in a bathroom or deserted spot ( garden, room, hall, nursing room etc. ). You could ask the driver to turn on the aircon in the car and blast yourself for a few minutes to cool down. You are probably late already so a few more minutes wont cause a train smash. Take some deep breaths and calm yourself. For general aches or headaches, take a quick acting aspirin or paracetamol based painkiller with about a

glass of water ( unless you have a condition which prevents you from using over the counter painkillers ). Nausea can be quelled by a little water or if you like take an antacid with nervousness and stress, stomach juices tend to be released and most brides dont have time to eat before the ceremony and this exacerbates the problem. Chew on a cracker or a few bites of an apple and relax your mind. Mental preparedness is most key before you get caught in the pitfalls of worry and stress, so instead of psyching yourself up, practise psyching yourself down so that when the day comes you know how to find that happy place.

SUCKy SOUND SySTEMSSome blessed few can have the philharmonic string quartet bowing the classics at their reception. Most hire a DJ or live band. Remember that if the sound blows then you can do something about it. The DJ may be accustomed to teens bopping to mind blowingly loud music but it is hardly suitable at a wedding and contrary to DJ folklore, there is a volume control and even though it is fun to watch old aunt Flo who is seated near the loud speaker having her hair flapping in beat to the music. Some bands are great but those who suck can be asked to lipsync. Again, the wedding is yours and you decide what goes and what goes away.

Babys breath (Gypsophelia) used to be synonymous with sad looking plastic-wrapped grocery store bouquets. It was the ubiquitous filler, padding out arrangements and bouquets whenever necessary. No more! Today Babys Breath (also called Million Star) has been reborn as a chic and beautiful bloom that can make a big impact in bunches either on its own or mixed in with other flowers.

In the language of flowers (dating back to Victorian times) Babys Breath is associated with innocence and purity, making it a perfect (and rather romantic) choice for bridal bouquets. The result is stunning and can also be used to great effect in bridesmaids bouquets.

I love the look of bunches of Babys Breath lining the aisle. It just shows how versatile a bloom this is. For a more rustic look, you line the aisles with mason jars and fill them with babys breath. Very simple and very, very pretty.

Taken by stylemepretty.comSupplied by: Lols Flowers

My favourite centerpieces that incorporate Babys Breath use it in small doses. Consider adding Babys Breath to a mixture of bottles (of varying sizes and heights) for a slightly quirky, rustic feel.

  • Babys Breath can have the look of softly fallen snow when packed together like this in a vintage suitcase. Escort cards were then placed atop the babys breath. Another way to make place cards with Babys Breath is to make tiny bouquets (see below) and then add tags with the guests names on them.

I love the look of these hanging Babys Breath creations. Something as simple as hanging tin cans with Babys Breath creates a beautiful and modern look.

What was your memorable moment on your special day:For me, the most beautiful moment was after the actual ceremony. Knowing that I was now officially married to the man of my dreams and waiting for him to come to my family home to put my ring on my finger. I can honestly say, that has been the purest moment of joy I have ever experienced.

What advice do you have for other brides getting married?Firstly, I would advise any bride to make sure she has someone or a team of close friends and relatives assisting her with the planning and schedule, it is so easy to forget or overlook things because you have so much to do and plan. Secondly, I would advise the bride to make sure she does a hair and make up trial before the big day so that there is absolute clarity with regards to what you want.Thirdly, enjoy the day. Accept that there are going to be some glitches, but try your best to cherish the day and make the most of it because it passes by so quickly. And finally, and most importantly, dont settle for anyone who treats you like youre ordinary. Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 67

Old, dirty latex sponges, unhygienic powder puffs and brushes that require constant cleaning are becoming obsolete because they are being replaced by a new and modern application technique Airbrushing!

Airbrush make-up has long been one of the celebrities best kept secrets! But now you can have the star treatment by having airbrush make-up done for your wedding or function. Airbrush was designed for the demanding needs of film, television and high definition. Leading make-up artists around the world use airbrush systems because of the flawless coverage. High Definition is finding its way into our personal lives through our cameras, video cameras and soon our cell phones!

Advantages of airbrush make-upAirbrush make-up is ultra hygienic and fast. It has a huge advantage over sponge and brush as it guarantees a natural result with smooth and even coverage that is also long lasting and smudge-proof. Airbrush make-up will camouflage skin defects, yet remain practically invisible. The skin breathes easily because the make-up doesnt cover the pores or over stimulate the sebum glands. A perfect Tan for that perfect day

    by Chanel Jessica Laubscher

On your big day, you want an all round healthy glow. Taking time to actually get a tan is just not feasible with the constraints of modern living, not to mention the health factor. Sure you can go to a salon to get that spritz of bronze, but those often turn into disaster stories that haunt your wedding album for an eternity. So what is a girl to do? Well to put it simply, you can fake it and you can do it in the comfort of your own home.

First generation self-tan products quickly earned themselves a stigma for only ending in disaster leaving women with an unnatural orange glow that often resulted in nightmares instead of dreams. Their reputations for being a smelly, sticky and often stripy mess were enough to strike fear into any blushing bride to be. But, rest assured, self tanning products have changed drastically over the past few years. The next generation in self tanning offers a solution that is odourless without any worry of streaks and that dreaded carrot look.

Being a fair skinned girl myself, I often indulge in a little quick-fix bronzing. After years of experimenting with different products and countless let downs, I finally found a product that worked. If you

  • Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 73

are like me and you like a good quality product that results in less maintenance, then Caribbean Tan is for you. I have been using this for the last year or so and I have never been disappointed. I have yet to experience any accidental streaks.

What makes Caribbean Tan so great is that it does not try to encompass all tanning elements into one bottle like older brands do. There is a range of products which help you become the Greek goddess you envision in your fantasies. The biggest bonus of this product is that you do not have to worry about applying less in troublesome areas like elbows and knees. So to help you accomplish the

amazing bronze hue you hope to have on your big day, I have compiled a two week action plan.

Practice Makes PerfectFirst off, just like with makeup and hair for

your wedding day, you must first test the final look before actually going through with the ultimate step. Test the following process two weeks before you skip down the aisle.

Prepping For The Big KahunaPrepping is crucial and key to the

success of the end result. Waxing and shaving should be done 24 hours before

  • 74 Brides Essence.com - Issue 12

to enable pores to close. If you plan on having a facial for the big day, make sure to do this one week before you start your final tanning process so that your facial skin can settle down. The first rule of self tanning is exfoliation. If you want a smooth tan all over then start scrubbing. The Caribbean Tan Exfolia preps your skin for the colouring task ahead. Specially formulated ingredients in this exfoliator stimulate the skin to make the tanning process mesh easier. Focus on rough and hard- to- reach areas like elbows, knees and armpits. Blondes and fair-heads should always apply Vaseline around the hairline and eyebrows to avoid colour build-up on the edges of the hair follicle.

    Go-timeDepending on your skin type

you will either go for A which is for fair skin, B for medium skin that tans gradually or C for dark skin that tans easily. You have a choice between instant tan and gradual tan for each skin type. I highly recommend using the gradual option for beginners so you can see changes in colour incrementally over a few days as opposed to the final result once off. Dont be too eager to get the desired effect immediately. Gradual offers you the control of shading until you find the perfect hue. Once you have established whether you are A, B or C and have decided on how fast you want your tan to develop, you have the option of either tan in a can, a spritzer or a mousse. I recommend the tan in a can for that professional salon look.

Bear in mind that self tan and painting have pretty much the same rules. Gently wipe

  • Mar/Apr 2014 Brides Essence Magazine 75

the product in long vertical movements. Avoid circular rubbing. Start with your legs and feet. Gently spray the product onto your legs and work downwards towards your feet in thorough vertical motions. When focusing on the feet and ankles, use a large bronzing makeup brush to sweep the difficult areas on your feet and ankles. The painting action helps to smooth out any possible mistakes and avoids colour clinging.

When your legs and feet are covered, move up towards the upper half of your body, bearing in mind to wipe in between folds. If you cannot reach your back, ask someone to assist you. You might get smears on your back if you aimlessly rub and miss spots where you cannot reach. Pay special attention to the sections under your arms. These are often overlooked. Once you have finished with the tan in a can, repeat two days after and once again two days after that if you desire a darker look.

MaintenanceMake sure not to dive into the tub or

pool for at least 6 hours after application. After applying the first coat, be sure to moisturize with the Caribbean Tan x-tender body butter daily, to lock in the colour and moisture. Use the Caribbean Tan wipes to add colour to areas that are fading or are uneven. To maintain your tan try to stick to cool showers and when drying yourself off, focus on dabbing your skin with the towel instead of rubbing.

If you use any other moisturiser, make sure that it is oil free. Try not to stay in the pool or ocean for too long since your tan will start to dissolve. Finally apply the Caribbean Tan shimmer cream before a big night out and most definitely on the big day. It will just add that final sparkle to your day.

    12 Apostles Luxury stay

This pearl situated at the foot of the 12 apostles mountain peaks just South of the renowned Camps Bay and only a 15 minute drive from Cape Town CBD. Friendly and helpful staff are only too eager to assist in any way possible. Beautiful works of art grace the walls and nothing is ordinary or common with every feature of this fine establishment being hand picked for its artistic prowess.

Ushered into one of the 70 suites, we were delighted to find a bottle of the finest wine on ice and a delectable fruit and nut platter awaiting us. After settling in from the workday and having freshened up we proceeded to the Azure restaurant where Jabu, our friendly waitress ushered us to our table of choice. We opted for a 5 course gourmet feast; which allowed us

to savour more of the delicacies than if we simply opted for the a-la-carte choices.

The meal began with delight and just got better as more and more delicious meals were brought. Jabu went out of her way to provide us with everything we asked and more. What a pleasant time we had. Of course we over ate as everyone tends to do with such fine and excellent food. We enjoyed every mouthful as we watched the sun set over Camps Bay from our table.

Upon returning to our room we were so surprised to find our room transformed petals everywhere and candles set a romantic air. This is not to be missed.
