Foreword

In response to Letter no. 1/7/DIP/2015/MSME-DI dated 20/05/2016 of O/o DC

(MSME), M/o MSME, Govt. of India, the District Industrial Profiles of all 21 districts of

North Bihar under the jurisdiction of the MSME- Development Institute, Muzaffarpur

have been updated as per data available for latest years.

This report contains details of geographical information, topography, mineral and

forest resources, industrial scenario, social infrastructure, supporting institutions,

related statistical data and other information relating to MSME sector in the Khagaria

district. The relevant data have been collected from various government agencies

and other institutional sources.

I take this opportunity to appreciate the efforts put in by our officer, Shri Avishek

Chanda, Assistant Director (E.I.) for updating the report.

Brief Industrial Profile of Khagaria District

1. General Characteristics of the District

Khagaria, as a district, is only twenty one years old. Earlier it was a part of the district of

Munger, as a sub division. The sub division of Khagaria was created in the year 1943-

44. It was upgraded as a district w.e.f.10th May, 1981.Khagaria was created mainly due

to the difficulties arising out of a lack of easy means of communications. It is said that

the entire areas, now included in the district of Khagaria, was “Dahnal” affected by

floods of the Ganga , the Gandak,the Kamla, the Bagmati and the Koshi and that

because of its physical situation , any site of importance must have been washed away,

that is why, it does not possess any historical site of importance . According to the

history, commonly known in this part, it is said that during the time of Emperor Akbar.

Raja Todarmal had been entrusted with the duty of making a survey of the entire area,

but as he failed to do it, he advised that this area should be excluded, in other words, he

adopted the policy of “FARAKKIYA” and that is why the area is known as “PHARAK

KIYA PARGANA”.

1.1 Location & Geographical Area

Khagaria is located at 25°15′-25°44‟North & 86°17‟-86°52‟ East. Khagaria district came

in existence on 10th May 1981, initially it was a part of Munger & is surrounded by

Bhagalpur and Madhepura in the East, Begusarai and Samastipur in the West, Saharsa

in the North and in the South it is Munger and Begusarai . The geographical area of the

district Khagaria is 1486 square kilometer with North to South 23 km and East to West

48 km.

1.2 Topography

The district occupies the area of 1486 sq.km and is surrounded by seven rivers namely

Ganges, Kamla balan, Koshi, Budhi Gandak, Karch, Kali Koshi and Bagmati. These

rivers cause flood every year which causes great loss of life and prosperity including

livestock. The land has an average elevation of 36 meter (118ft). Land of the district is


very fertile (alluvial soil) and major crop is Maize, paddy, wheat oilseed and vegetables

are grown on commercial basis too. The average rainfall in the district is 1056 mml. The

main occupation of the district is cultivation.


1.3 Climatic Conditions

In summer the climate of the district is hot and dry but winter months are quite cool and

pleasant. Winter comes towards the middle of October after the rains are over. The

temperature begins falling and January is the coldest month of the year with mercury

falling to about 10ºC. The blowing of westerly wind accompanied by dust storms about

the middle of March marks the beginning of hot weather. The mercury starts shooting

upward and May is the hottest month of the year when the maximum temperature goes

up to 45ºC. The summer continues till the end of June when the onset of rains brings

the much awaited relief and the temperature falls, though the humidity is still high the

rise in humidity often makes the heat only more oppressive during the rainy season

which lasts till the end of September. From November to February the district has a

pleasant climate. The district also gets some winter rain.

1.4 Availability of Minerals:

As per this report no mineral is available in the district.

1.5 Forest:

At most of the places, there are luxuriant gardens of mango and litchi, for which this

district is mostly famous. Apart from these, Babul, Neem, Sirish and Sisho are also

found. Wild animals, such as boars were occasionally found in the northern area of

Khagaria District. During the winters, migratory birds come in large numbers in the

northern part of the district.

1.6 Electricity and Power

The district receives its entire power supply from Bihar State Electricity Board. The

district of Khagaria has one grid station of 20 KVA at Khagaria and 3 Sub-stations. In

the rural areas, the Government is trying to extended electric line to the maximum

number of villages by implementing various schemes for rural electrification. There are

139 Villages of the district which are electrified.


1.7 Administrative set up

There are two sub divisions namely Khagaria and Gogari. For the purpose of smooth

administration of the district there is 7 blocks which have in total 301 revenue villages

and 129 panchayats.
