Since the last publication of our Briese news international, european and national wise many things have changed and others stayed.

Spain is after a remarkable euro 2012 Football tournament the old and new european Champion. insofar nothing has changed in this matter.

Many colleagues on board only had the chance to watch the matches occasionally. thanks that you have been on board. the once who have been on vacation or in a port had more luck. russia, ukraine and Poland played football well but un-fortunately they were not able to reach the semi-finals.

with wladimir Putin we a have a new and old President in rus-sia. Hopefully he will bring what the citizens expect from him.

the european economy is still weak and consequently also the shipping market. the freight rates reached the absolute bottom and as a result a lot of shipping companies are going bankrupt. also two big russian Shipping companies – Fesco from vladivostock and north-western Shipping Company from archangelsk – have been hit hard. they became insolvent.

in comparison to others Briese Shipping is in a relatively stable condition. By our joint efforts we will be able to bridge the next one and a half years and afterwards the freight market hope-fully will recover.

Most important is the good performance in respect to the sea transport. then the clients will stay with us.

in the second half of this year a couple of newbuildings will be delivered, which unfortunately have been ordered already in 2007. afterwards no further newbuildings are going to be expected at least for the next two years.

all together please take care for a good maintenance condition of the vessels, low fuel consumption and a good performance.

Thanks for your kind cooperation.

exCurSion to inStitute oF MaritiMe StudieS in leer

On June 15th 2012 laura Horvath, responsible for the apprentices on shore, and some of the apprentices of briese Schiffahrt and bbC Char-tering & logistic visited the Univer-sity of Applied Science - Institute of Maritime Studies in leer for a 2 hours-tour.

they were guided by Kai groen who will graduate from the institute of Maritime Studies at the end of June and will then start to work in our operations department.

the tour started at the maneuvering basin, a 20 m² pool in which a model ship is filmed to document the forces which have impact on it. with this data the students are able to research in the section of measurement and forces and can implement their results on real vessels.the second station guided laura and the apprentices to a physics seminar room. the job of a sonic camera was demon-strated by involving the apprentices. this sonic camera finds noises which cannot be detected in one room.

after that, they were brought to the university´s planetarium in which an artificial star sky can be created. By watching the fictitious sky and listening to the professor, they got a rough overview of the astronomy knowledge and how to navigate without any gPS or radar. Finally the tour led them to the navigational bridge simulator which is the beating heart of the university. it is capable of creating an artificial 120° sight. waves and weather can be simulated to learn practically how to maneuver. Hereby the students got the chance to learn not just theory but also prac-tice by using this simulator.

Two engineering students were walking across campus when one said “ Where did you get such a great bike?” The second engineer replied, “Well, I was walking along yesterday minding my own business when a beautiful woman rode up on this bike. She threw the bike to the ground, took off all her clothes and said, “Take what you want.”The second engineer nodded approv-ingly, “Good choice; the clothes probably wouldn`t have fit”---

After being married for over fourty years to the worst cook in the world, a man ar-rived home from work one evening to find her in floods of tears. “What‘s the matter, darling?`he asked. “It`s a desaster”, she wailed “The cat has eaten your dinner!” “Don`t worry”, said the husband, comforting her. “I`ll get you a new cat”---

Bob stood over his tee on the 18th hole for what seemed like forever. He`d wagg-le, look down, look up, but never start his back swing. Finally David, his playing part-ner, asked, „Why on Earth are you taking so long to make this shot?“ „My wife is up

there watching me from the clubhouse, and I want to make this shot

a good one,“ said Bob. „Good Lord“, said David, „You haven`t got a chance of hit-ting her from here.“

“briese Swallow Sevastopol” ltd Odessa branch office was opened 01st of June 2012. located in the center of Odessa it reflects the whole conception of the Company’s work and it’s qualified personnel are always ready to assist seaman in finding employment in briese Shipping.

the personnel of our office have formulated the following slogan: ”we shall do more than we can, we shall do everything that is necessary!” Success doesn’t come to you…you go to it. this positive tone and outspoken optimism had Zhanna Maslova and Maya dol-gova begin their working career in the Company.

“i’m a native of odessa, born into the family of a seaman, therefore a passion for the marine business was cultivated in me in my childhood. the main part of my parents’ working career was connected with the maritime fleet. My father took me on a voyage many times and i had an opportunity to see the real life on board a ship. those bright im-pressions have remained in my memory and inspired me to choose my present working activity in the german company “Briese Schiffahrt”.

i received a higher education in two specialities. i have a diploma in Marketing (odessa State economic university) and a diploma in law (odessa regional institute of State administration of the national academy of State administration under the President of ukraine). i worked for 2 years as a Marketing Manager in commercial real estate

HaPPy BirtHday Mr. Kurt Paul

The Inspection department surprised Superintendent Kurt Paul with a party due to his 70th birthday on 16th of May 2012.

after official end of working day, around 40 colleagues of Briese Schiffahrt inspection, purchase and administra-tion department assembled at undisclosed party location, where a bar and barbeque been prepared. they been waiting together for Kurt Paul arrival, who been guided over there a bit later by a pretext, given by Mr. Briese. He has been visibly affected of this surprise party for him.

after the BBQ-dinner Kurt Paul was surprised once more by a self made cake in shape of a vessel.

as a special present the inspection department created a canvas of the M/v “Kurt Paul” for him. all Members of the “inspection Crew” are sitting on the deck containers and railing. Capt. Briese is keeping his hands on the railing of the vessel and -of course- on his team.

we have to thank Mr. Kurt Paul for his unresting engage-ment and according to his own words; we will be de-lighted to have him in our team also for the next 10 years.

Happy birthday and all the best to Kurt Paul!

company. i’m also fond of foreign languages (english, turkish and german). My first steps in the Company are made in the position of the of-fice Manager. i can apply my knowledge and obtain great experi-ence. Says - Zhanna Maslova.

Maya dolgova is a Crew Manager of the Company and already has great experience in the field of crewing activity.

“i was born in izmail into the family of a Marine engineer. My im-mediate family was born on the South coast of the Black Sea just as i was. i think this played a part in their choice of professions and they worked on the board of the Soviet danube Shipping Company.i started my education at a technological institute, than i contin-ued in higher education at odessa State economic university.

My acquaintance with the sea began after receiving an offer to work for a well-known english travel Company “Sun Cruises”, where i worked for 7 years in the position of asst. Purser, than Senior asst. Purser.

after that i worked as a Manager assistant and Coordinator in several crewing companies of odessa. the greatest experience i received was while working for the international crewing com-pany v.Ships (ukraine).

initially odessa, popularly called Porto-Franco, was a center of sea routes and commercial traffic throughout the world, thus marine dynasties still exist here. the profession of seafarer is an worthy choice, offering stability and career advancement.

i’m happy to continue my working activity and apply my qualifica-tion in the german Company “Briese Schiffahrt”. i also hope that seamen who choose our Company will hereafter realize – they have made the perfect choice!”, - Maya dolgova.

the office premises have been purchased in november 2011 and were rebuild during the last months.

Besides Maxim nester, angelika rieken and wilke Briese took a part in general design of office space and furniture distribution for BSS odessa staff. the walls are decorated with extra-large pictures of Briese Heavy lift vessels and the entire fleet can be viewed and visualized to visitors via the several lCd monitors.

the office is equipped with “high speed optical internet” con-nection which enables a smooth communication and internet interviews with the Briese office in germany.

the map will guide you the way to our Branch which is situated in the Historical Centre of odessa – approx. 100 m away from the well known “Book Market”.

200 Millionen Euro an. Im

vergangenen Jahr hatte der

Betriebsgewinn bei 207 Mil

lionen Euro gelegen.

Die HHLA hatte ihre Ge

schäftsziele jüngst nach un

ten korrigiert, weil Verzöge

rungen bei der Elbvertiefung

und ein härterer Preiskampf

zwischen den Nordseehäfen

das börsennotierte Kernge

schäft Hafenlogistik zu Jah

resbeginn belasteten. Als

Ursache führte der Vorstand

auch den Umbau des Inter

modalgeschäfts an.

Der Containerumschlag soll

im laufenden Jahr um fünf

Prozent auf 7,4 Millionen

Einheiten steigen und damit

erneut stärker zulegen als der

Markt, für den Marktforscher

nur noch einen Zuwachs von

etwa einem Prozent pro

gnostizieren. Im vergange

nen Jahr lag das Wachstum

noch bei 9,5 Prozent, und die

HHLA hatte rund 7,1 Millio

nen Container (+ 21,3 Pro

zent) auf ihren Terminals im

Hamburger Hafen und Odes

sa abgefertigt.

Der HHLAChef betonte er

neut die Notwendigkeit des

„noch immer nicht begonne

nen“ Fahrwasserausbaus der

Elbe. „Diese Situation belas

tet unsere Terminals in Ham

burg schon seit Jahren durch

extrem knappe Zeitfenster

für die Abfertigung der uns

anlaufenden Schiffe“, so Pe

ters. Durch die rasch zuneh

mende Anzahl immer grö

ßerer Schiffe werde diese Si

tuation von Monat zu Monat

prekärer. Die Zahl der Anläu

fe von Großcontainerschif

fen mit einer Kapazität von

mehr als 10 000 Standard

containern beispielsweise

stieg im Jahresvergleich um

rund 60 Prozent. Neben

Tiefgangseinschränkungen

spielt dabei die Breite der

Fahrrinne vor Hamburg eine

entscheidende Rolle. Jedes

fünfte Überseeschiff, das

die Hamburger HHLATer

minals anläuft, hat inzwi

schen eine Breite von 45 Me

tern und mehr. Da sich auf

dem Elbabschnitt zwischen

Tinsdal und Störbogen je

doch Schiffe nur begegnen

dürfen, wenn ihre addierte

Breite 90 Meter nicht über

schreitet, werden die ohne

hin engen Zeitfenster häufig

zusätzlich eingeschränkt. In

der Praxis bedeutet dies zu

sammen mit den Tiefgangs

beschränkungen, dass oft

mehrere Großschiffe kon

kurrieren, um den Hambur

ger Hafen erreichen oder

verlassen zu können. Und

Ende dieses Jahres erwar

tet die HHLA den ersten An

lauf eines Schiffes mit 16 000

Stellplätzen.In diesem Zusammenhang

wies Peters auch auf die um

fassende Erweiterung am

Burchardkai (CTB) hin. Nach

dem Endausbau seiner dann

29 Blocklager wird der Ter

minal seine Kapazität gegenüber dem ursprünglichen Ni

veau auf deutlich über fünf

Millionen Container pro Jahr

verdoppelt haben. Gerade

sind fünf weitere, in ihren Di

mensionen nochmals größe

re Tandembrücken bestellt

worden. Sie werden 2013 am

nächsten Großschiffsliege

hen und auch 18 000TEU

Auch die Vergütung des Vor

standes war Thema auf der

Aktionäre kritisierten die

Anhebung der Bezüge um

59 Prozent (THB 2. April

und forderten einen Verzicht

On Tuesday 12th of June our vessel bbC GERMANY dis-charged the first two of a total of 80 so called ‘transition pieces’ at the new berth No. 8 in Cuxhaven after a short voyage from bremen where the loading took place one day before.

a transition pieces is part of an offshore wind turbine and lo-cated between the foundation below and the tower sections above. with a unit weight of 265 tons the pieces are 25.5 metres long and have a diameter of 5.9 metres at one end and 5.0 metres on the other end.

while the first voyage started with two pieces, all following trips are planned with six units.

the transition pieces are fabricated by german steel con-struction company aMBau at their facilities in Bremen. upon arrival at the Cuxhaven works the pieces will be blasted and painted before final outfitting. then the pieces will be stored

in upright position until being picked up by an installation ves-sel.

the units are made for the wind farms ‘Meerwind ost’ and ‘Meerwind Sued’ which are located side by side 12 nautical miles northwest of the island of Helgoland in the german Bight (see picture). these wind farms will jointly consist of 80 wind turbines with a total power of 288 Mw which upon its comple-tion by the end of next year will be sufficient to supply 360.000 houses. Compared to coal-fired

power plants this new installation will save Co2 emissions in a volume of 1 million tons each year.

With this shipment we established our new ‘NORTH EU-ROPEAN NEAR SHORE SERVICE’ to serve the offshore wind industry in the North Sea and baltic Sea as well as offer a short sea service for project cargo.

First days of March bbC had the idea to have a small cocktail party on board the M/V bbC belem in Cal-lao port. bbC had loaded on her a full cargo of steel structures for the Toromocho Project owned by the Chinalco ( China).

BBC leer had then the excellent idea to christen the vessel at the same time as this was her maiden voyage from China and have somebody from Chinalco to be the godmother.

then together with BBC lima all the coordination for this event were started which resulted very well, thanks to the big help and guidance we received from Janneke Picciocchi, lena Pollmann and Barbara Stelly. the god-mother was Mrs Haymee rospigliosi the Chinalcos Peru Presidents executive assistant, she was very excited and honored.

on March 13th in the afternoon the event took place. Master and crew had arranged everything and a bus with Chinalco and MiQ (Frt Forwarders for Chinalco) arrived at the port just in time with about 35 persons. aPM terminal in Callao was also very helpful as this was the first chris-tening in this terminal under their administration. and yes, fortunately the champagne bottle broke on the first hit!! after the formalities of the christening were complied on shore side, all had the chance to visit the vessel and join a cocktail party at the bridge. Space was a bit tight but everybody had a good time as for most of them this was the first time they had been on a vessels bridge. Chinalco handed over a nice present to the Master in memory of this christening. local press and reporters covering the event have been on site which came out same day in the local news. after this all went to the restaurant Cabos close to the port with the Master, Chief engineer and the clients. during dinner the godmother was given a nice present which she appreciated very much thanking own-ers for having chosen her for this big responsibility.

CHriStening oF Mv BBC Pluto

On the 10th of January 2012 chance was taken to visit our nice lady “bbC Pluto” during her first call in Germany.

due to this special occasion it was decided to arrange her christening with Silvia gustavi-eil-ers, the wife of Holger eilers who works since years as an assistant in the inspection depart-ment of Briese Schiffahrt, as godmother.

a small and familiar ceremony was arranged to celebrate the new 37.300 tons deadweight bulk carrier “BBC Pluto”, one of Briese’s larg-est vessels, and after discharging in rotter-dam she finally arrived in nordenham.

even that she has already been delivered in october 2010 we have looked for a suitable and appropriate port to revel the new lady.

“BBC Pluto” was built at xingang Shipyard in tianjin and is the two months younger sister of Mv BBC neptune.

godmother’s speech:“i wish you always a good journey and of course always a hand’s breadth water under your keel. i think you survived some storms before but never the less i hope that in future the storms stay away from you. i wish your crew under the guidance of Captain lau a har-monic and reliable corporation and Briese Schiffahrt a lot of success with you. Herewith I christen you on the name “bbC Pluto”.”

in March 2012 we used the good opportunity to buy the nice multipurpose vessel MS “bbC bunde”, which is an identic sis-ter to our long-term successful operating vessels “bbC Rhei-derland”, “bbC Ostfriesland” and “bbC leer”, constructed in the same way on the same shipyard, Flensburger Schiffbau gesellschaft, germany. as a result of bankruptcy and the cur-rent low market situation we were able to buy the vessel on very good terms. after completing the necessary repair and mainte-nance works the vessel is in a good technical condition. after the successful finalization of the drydock period we were able to deliver the vessel to BBC Chartering & logistic at satisfying terms although charter market is presently on a very low level.

together with her sister vessels MS “bbC Everest”, “bbC Fuji”, “bbC Mont blanc” and “bbC Kibo” the “bbC Olym-pus” is the fifth vessel complementing the team of the “new wave” generation of 9.600 dtw heavy lifter vessels. Being delivered successfully from xingang Shipyard, China end of april 2012 the vessel is just completing her first voyage from Shanghai (China) passing the Pacific ocean with several stops in vancouver (Canada), Manzanillo (Mexiko), Callao (Peru) and San antonio (Chile) in service for BBC Chartering.

also the 8,000 dwat multipurpose vessels series has grown: the MS “bbC balboa” (delivered 03/2012) and the “bbC brisbane” (delivered 05/2012) are the newest additions to the existing. as her sister BBC Belem the vessel “bbC balboa” was also manufactured by dalian Shipyard, China (BBC Belem), “bbC brisbane” was built on the shipyard Shandong Baibuting, China.

towage oPeration oSterMarSCH On the 2nd June 2012 M/V “bremer Johanna“ faced a propulsion breakdown after catching some fishing nets in the propeller close to the Algerian coast. due to the loading condition it was not possible to evaluate the extent of the damage.

unfortunately the wind changed the direction during the night and the vessel was drifting towards the algerian Coast and the tug already ordered could not manage to arrive in vicinity in time.

the algerian authorities began to press the Master for accepting a Salvage tug to render assistance. on the morning of the 3rd our M/v ”ostermarsch” under the command of Captain nemtsov arrived at the position and established a towing connection within shortest time.

M/v “Bremer Johanna” has been towed about 50 nm off-shore, where she has been later on picked up by a tug boat.

Meanwhile she has safely reached Cartagena where the repairs to the propeller and the other effected parts are carried out.

we would like to express our sincere thanks to the entire crew of M/v ”ostermarsch” for the professional job done.

From the former news and the relevant circulars you might have noted that similar operations have been carried out successfully with different ships of our fleet. this has lead to a high level of reputation among the insurance com-panies we are dealing with and we are getting more and more request for such kind of assistance.

Beside the size of the vessel, their income, sailing sched-ules and environmental circumstances the ability of the crew to carry out such an operation is an important factor.

We are appreciating your efforts in training all crew members with the former provided guidelines as you never know if you will end up in a similar situation.

We would like to put your attention onto M/V bbC Africa which used either a long voyage or good weather for maintenance jobs on deck outside!

M/v BBC africa

We are very impressed by such works and highly appreci-ate the efforts of the crew in this respect!

in respect to engine Maintenance we would like to highlight M/v BBC neptune with fixed Chief engineer Shepotko. the engine room is very well serviced and in an excellent condition.

SPECial MaiNtENaNCE

In the last briese News we started to give you some hints regarding maintenance of certain equipment.

with this information we would like to continue and would like to draw your attention on the Fire Men’s equipment.

How it SHould NOT Be:

Fire FigHting eQuiPMenton board of our fleet we have different types of Fire Men´s outfit, some have just normal outfits and on some we have the Full Heat Protection Suit. these can be used for fire fight-ing directly in the fire for a short time to rescue a person or to carry out special tasks like closing valves or dampers.

This shield shall not have any damage or defects.

it showed up during internal audits on some vessels that these parts are dam-aged and not in good condition anymore.

as this is part of the safety equipment it should be checked more thoroughly and any defect shall be reported and a new shield shall be ordered.

For training purpose the shield can be removed easily or if available it can be exchanged with a clear shield.

Please check your FFe carefully and if any defect occurs please order a new shield via your inspection team.

To protect the Fire Men’s eyes

from harm when entering the fire the shield of the helmet has got

a gold shield protection

outer Hull and ProPeller Condition Even though exposed to the sea every day, the condition of outer hull and propeller is oftentimes neglected in every day operation.

in order to survive in the current bunker regime, we want to give the outer hull and propeller more attention in the future. we have identified a few locations, where Briese Chartering can order diver cleaning companies to bring the vessel back into good condition such as Portland in the english Channel at affordable cost when there is a chance and the Captains give us the recommendation to do so.

one vessel taken out of drydock unfortunately showed a very bad condition of outer hull and propeller and resulted in heavy speed reductions and high bunker costs for a long time. only in drydock, the vessel has been brought back into proper condition. it has been very minor investment to clean the outer hull and to polish the propeller to bring back a good running condition which is good for vessels speed and also good news for the engine.

Please send us some pictures and explanations about the condition of the vessels hull and propeller when you have the chance to inspect the outer hull in ballast or in warmer regions or if you are aware of intense fouling on the hull. we are dependent on your observations! in contrast to other com-panies, Chartering and Ship-Management is in one hand at Briese/BBC and therefore please do not hesitate to report unfavorable outer hull conditions to Briese Chartering and BBC Chartering ([email protected] & [email protected]) !
