“We [the Army] know, given a smaller force, to win in the future, it will be with our allies and partners, and
they must be able to interoperate with us, we must share a common operating picture and all of those are
being exercised routinely at our Army Warfighting Assessments.”

Network Integration Evaluations (NIEs)
• INTEGRATION•Executed 11 x NIEs (NIE 11.2 – NIE 16.2)
• Integrates Army tests on Programs of Record
(POR) within a brigade force-on-force exercise
• Operationally relevant and demanding scenarios,
with a robust simulation wrap-around
• Primarily focused on the network, mission command systems, and other networked systems
Mission: BMC executes operationally realistic and rigorous Network Integration Evaluation (NIE) and
Army Warfighting Assessment (AWA) exercises to provide Soldier feedback on emerging concepts and
capabilities that will improve the combat effectiveness of the Joint Force
Army Warfighting Assessments (AWAs)
• INNOVATION•Triple payoff: Readiness, Future Force
Development and Joint/Multinational

Leader-Follower
– Leader/Follower is a capability that TRADOC/ARCIC and CASCOM see as technology that can be
fielded to Soldiers in the next five years.
– TARDEC is developing Leader/Follower technology based upon 2014 Joint Concept Technology
Demonstration (JCTD)
– A force protection capability and a combat sustainment multiplier
Used in high risk areas between origin and destinations
Leader/Follower is autonomous vehicle operations that can provide greater force protection
to Soldiers
Provides ground resupply efficiencies; enables 24 hr. Ops, more Trucks per convoy,
increases Cargo Ton-miles per operator
Leader/Follower (L/F) provides a limited autonomous vehicle capability to Tactical Wheeled Vehicles
(TWVs). The system provides the capability for a designated “manned” Lead vehicle to lead a line of
“unmanned” Follower vehicles thru the use of vehicle sensors with sufficient accuracy to safely operate
unmanned.

Rapidly Installable Robotic Applique Kit (RIRAK): The RIRAK installs in any tactical vehicle to provide
movement of equipment from a remote location.
AWA 17.1
fall 2016
Produces high-quality, cost-effective solutions that can be retrofitted or "strapped-on" to any existing vehicle
or vessel that has a steering wheel.
Goal of effectively creating a fleet of optionally unmanned, tele-operation or semi-autonomous ground
vehicles to handle a host of operations.
Kairos autonomy is a small business focused on delivering add-on robotic capabilities to existing vehicles.

Lancope® Stealthwatch
Sealthwatch is a solution that consumes information about the traffic that is passing through devices in the
network such as firewalls, routers and switches.
Stealthwatch is capable of storing the flow information for long periods of time due to the flows consisting of
very light metadata information.
StealthWatch is a behavior based system that uses the analysis of flow data to detect and discover a wide
range of cyber attacks, insider threats, and zero-day malware
AWA 17.1

How to Be Successful
In preparation for participation in an AWA: Know number of New Equipment Fielding (NEF) days/hours that are required
Know # of Net Equipment Training (NET) days/hours that are required
At what echelon should your capability be evaluated
How many Soldiers/leaders require training
Recommend required/leader training required
Timely safety release
At the Technical Integration Meeting (TIM), actual candidate vice power point is important so all can see Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP)
“Engineer” speak is good; must be complimented by “operational” speak
The right briefer can make or break your nomination
Lifecycle management will become focus of future TIMs
Lab based risk reduction pay dividends Robust Training Support Packages (TSPs) are key for NET & conducting sustainment training
NET training products must be approved NLT 30 days prior to beginning of NET!
COE Sponsor critical to the process
Know the Agile Process – Communicate – Aggressively Prepare for TIM/Lab/NEF/NET
