Tel (02) 9716 1800 260 Liverpool Road, Ashfield NSW 2131 PO Box 1145 Ashfield NSW 1800 COMMUNITY NEWS WHAT’S ON MAYORAL COLUMN RE-ELECTED AS MAYOR Thank you to my fellow Councillors for electing me for another term as Mayor of Ashfield Council. It is indeed an honour and privilege to serve once again in this position. I wish to sincerely thank Clr. Mansour for his valuable support and counsel over the last year as Deputy Mayor, and I welcome Clr. Lofts as our new Deputy Mayor. We have a lot of work ahead of us over the coming year and we look forward to getting the best outcomes for our community. WESTCONNEX EIS PUBLIC MEETING The Ashfield Town Hall was almost filled to capacity last Wednesday night with residents who intelligently and passionately expressed their distress towards the unjustifiable WestConnex project. Our community is understandably distraught with so much to lose - homes, iconic heritage buildings, neighbourhoods, not to mention the of 8 years of construction dust, noise, vibrations, traffic chaos, and threats to health and safety of children. All this for just six minutes reduction in travel time cannot be justified. What makes this even more unacceptable was the horrifying news shared on the night – that the company conducting the EIS for WestConnex, AECOM, recently paid out $280 million dollars to settle a lawsuit on the Brisbane Airport Link. This was based on claims of misleading and deceptive conduct associated with AECOM’s traffic forecasting on the project (making it one of the biggest lawsuits of its kind in Australian corporate history). The Brisbane Airport Link has declared bankruptcy. Surely this re-affirms that the WestConnex project cannot proceed. I sincerely wish to thank the community for its great input at the meeting. This will inform and shape Council’s response to the Environmental Impact Statement. Notes from the public meeting will be posted on our website as soon as available. Haberfield Celebration of Gardens With spring comes Haberfield’s annual garden quest, which opens this week. All residents of the suburb can enter Haberfield Celebration of Gardens, whether a keen “green thumb” or a weekend potterer. Entry is free, and every type of garden, large or small, is welcome. “It’s all about enjoying the part that gardens, big or small, play in enriching our suburb,” says co-ordinator Jeff Malyon. Entry forms are going into letter boxes, and are also available at Haberfield Library. More details from Jeff Malyon, 0417 976 226. Judging of gardens will be on Saturday, October 24.
