In the Kingdom of God there is enough for everyone. We practice this understanding each time we gather around the communion table and welcome all believers to join us in celebrating the Lord’s Supper.

Lott Carey was a freed slave from Charles City Virginia who led a group of freed slaves to return to Liberia and begin a mission school in the capital city of Monrovia which has been in existence for 104 years now, providing quality education for students of Liberia. Following a 15-year civil war, that destroyed much of the country including parts of the school, they are rebuilding and continuing their ministry as they go. It is currently a day school for students K-12, but they are working to rebuild and, once again, be a

residential school, thereby having a greater impact on the students. Their motto is “Character, Industry, Scholarship” as they strive to instill Christian values in their students. Several years ago now, Theresie Houghton and Patti English met Emile Sam Peal while all studying at Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. The burden of his heart at that time was the terrible things happening in his home country of Liberia in the midst of civil war, and what was happening in the lives of the students. Beginning the week of September 12, we will enjoy daily activities planned for adults who are available to participate. Some will be ongoing, some will be one-day events. So watch your calendar carefully and participate in as many things as you are able to enjoy! We will update the schedule regularly on the website calendar so look there frequently! For now, you may begin looking forward to:

Weekly Events:

Mondays, 9:30 -11:30am – Women’s Bible Study – Using Anne Graham Lotz’, Into the Word. We gather in PA 111 (The Blue Room) for a time of study, sharing and prayer. Led by Leah Fromer and Becky Parker. A few books are available in the church office for purchase at $15 or you may order from Amazon. Tuesdays, 1:00pm – Bored? Games! – Everyone is invited to gather in the Welcome Center to join in playing games. Do you have a favorite game you would like to bring and invite others to play with you? Are you ready to play whatever game someone else brings? Come and join in the fun! As a part of this gathering, Neal Walters will be teaching lessons in Bridge, for anyone interested, beginning at 2:30pm each Tuesday. Tuesdays 3:30pm – Take a Walk in Pratt Park – Meet Jan Pierson & Frank Graebner & others at Shelter G at 3:30 and walk the great path! Exercise and fellowship together! Yoga Classes – Elana Hartman is a Hatha Yoga Instructor at Dragonfly Studio. She taught in our preschool last year and has a wonderful gentle spirit. She has been teaching yoga since 2001 and is a certified yoga instructor. Her classes are adaptable for people of all ages and levels. These classes will be offered in PA-111. Since it is carpeted you may not feel a need for a yoga mat, but you may bring one if you wish. We must have ten participants to make a class and there is a participant fee of $30 for each 6-week session. Our first session of classes will be from September 13 or 14 through October 18

or 29. We need you to submit your $30 participation fee in order to sign up and we need signups as soon as possible. Please indicate which of 3 possibilities you are interested in: Tuesday mornings 8:00 -9:00am Tuesday evenings 6:00-7:00pm, or Wednesdays at noon. If we have 10 participants or more for each of

these classes, she is willing to offer them at each of these times! Wednesdays 10:00am – Noon – Painting with Pam Hicks – Meet in the Welcome Center and enjoy a time of fellowship as we explore the creative art of painting. Pam will lead this 5-week session from September 14- October 12. Supply list will be posted on the church website. Thursdays 9:30 – 11:30am – Theology and Current Events – Meet in the Blue Room and explore current events with Larry Haun. What does faith in God reveal in our responses to the events we face within and beyond the walls of the church? How does our faith guide our interactions and responses? Thursdays at 12:30pm – Tea Basket Ministry – learn how Marian Wiltshire and Theresie Houghton have been making a tea party out of visiting with our homebound members! They will share some of the things they have learned and how they go about making their visits. After your questions are answered, you are invited to help in making these visits. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for every single one of our homebound members to receive a visit each month?! It will take several teams to make this possible. You may choose to visit one Thursday a month or every Thursday! What might you offer to this special ministry? Please pray about your potential involvement! Fridays 9:30 – Noon – Faith in Film – Meet in the youth lounge to view films together and then explore themes/lessons of faith demonstrated in the films consistent with or challenging of our faith. Coming Soon: Pub Theology – C.S. Lewis, J.R. Tolkein and their friends were known to gather at their neighborhood pub to discuss theology. Watch the church website for details on a group forming soon!

September 7 – DC Monument Tour – Have you ever wanted to see some of the newer monuments in Washington DC, but then realized the parking is terrible and there would be too much walking? WELL, what if you could be driven right to the monument entrance and let out to tour, be picked up again and transported to the next stop?!!!! If that works for you, then this trip is for you! We will board our church buses at 8:45 and head to DC where we will see the WWII Memorial, the Teddy Roosevelt Memorial, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial, and the Jefferson Memorial. We will plan to head south by 12:00, stopping at Woodbridge for lunch at Chuy’s on our way home. The goal is to be back at church by 3:30. We are asking each person to contribute $4 toward the purchase of gasoline and lunch is on your own. Please sign up by September 1, by calling or emailing the church office. If you want to take home a watermelon, you might want to bring a wagon so you don’t have to carry heavy items very far. Bring your own reusable shopping bag and you are free to park in the church parking lot or in Renato’s parking lot. September 21, 3:00pm – Container Gardening with Jack Marcom – Meet in the Welcome Center and get ready to learn alongside an excellent gardener! Friends at the TableFriends at the TableFriends at the TableFriends at the Table

Two weeks ago, a little girl, age 5, and her parents came into the Thursday Community Dinner. Her eyes were big as she stood in line at the potato bar to choose her toppings. She got chili when she didn’t want it, but her parents weren’t content to let her ask for anything else or throw out what hadn’t been her real choice. You see, they knew the value of a solid warm meal, especially after living in a hotel for the last few months without a kitchen.

It was T., the little girl, who started the conversation with a volunteer, saying she liked her new house. “I like my new house,” she said. That one proud comment offered with a really big smile led to a conversation about their lives and got Mom and Dad to let volunteers offer T. a peanut butter and jelly sandwich to take home with her potato.

The family was back again last week. Their house is coming together. They’ve gotten their things from storage. And, T., well, she came bursting into the room offering a hug, looking for her friends here at FBC. She had been telling her Mom all day on Thursday that she couldn’t wait to see her friends again. She called us friends—what an honor.

“Taste and see that the Lord is good,” writes the psalmist. Indeed, the Lord is good to both the one who receives and the one who gives in the name of the Lord. Remember to join in with FBC to serve our community each week by praying, donating food items, coming to wash and wrap potatoes on Wednesday evening, or serve in some way during the Thursday Community Meal.

After 30 days of class, monitors and students are taking a well-earned break from FBC’s NOVA High School Diploma Program. Due to the recent article in the Free-Lance Star, people are calling into ask about joining classes. One sixty-year-old woman calling in to request information said, “I only went to 10th grade and I’d really like to do this for my children and grandchildren.” There are also Micah clients who could benefit with the addition of another class session. While we would like to accommodate all interested students, class-size is intentionally kept small to insure that students receive attention needed from the number of volunteer monitors available. Currently, there is a waiting list for established sessions.

Monitor sign-up will begin again on Sunday, August 28th. See Jeanne in the Welcome Center or email ([email protected]) to add your name to the NOVA Monitor Schedule for the upcoming term.
