Limited licence with UnisonOur recommended strategy and time-frame in this case, for all firms is: 1. Complete the RG146 course ASAP - so that you are accredited and compliant, a. Unison will defer licensing you until next year - say Q2 2016, which will minimise the overall cost and any business disruption to you. 2. In summary: Unison will start working with you during Q1/Q2 2016 - to ensure: a. All of the processes you need are in place, with selected staff adequately trained. b. You are comfortable with using all required advice documents - only 3 in our case, or It may be more practical to use our in-house SoA service. c. Your compliance requirements, training programme and all communications material are in place, d. The referral process for specific client advice is in place, direct to our advisors and para-planners where required. Referral Only RelationshipIn this case you will still be required to undertake specific work which we can of course assist with, to ensure you:
1. Do not breach FOFA requirements by potentially giving advice - remaining compliant, and 2. Have the necessary referral processes in place for all aspects of your SMSF work, ex tax compliance work.

Unison: SMSF Licensing White Paper
› Creating a Sustainable Competitive Advantage
› Leveraging the SMSF Opportunity to Improve Your SMSF Business
› Improving the Value of Your Client Relationships and Business
SMSF Licensing for Accountants
competitive advantageCreating a sustainable
The 2015 financial year will be a watershed year for the Australian accounting profession, with a number of critical business challenges coming into focus. Most obviously, we are now entering the period ending the existing licensing exemption for accountants providing SMSF advice, which will take effect on 1 July 2016. But that is far from the only critical business challenge accountants face.
The increasing commoditisation of basic accounting services, the ATOs SBR programme and the trend towards cost-cutting and offshoring to name a few are direct challenges to a profession already affected by subdued growth, the shortage of skilled staff and ageing principals.
In this environment, it’s essential not to be distracted by the technicalities of the new licensing regime. The real challenge and opportunity is to leverage the licensing requirements to deliver a more robust and valuable SMSF advice service to your clients, building sustainable value for your business.
This issue is all the more important given the size and scale of the opportunity SMSFs represent. As at June 2014 (ATO SMSF Quarterly Report), there were more than 534,000 SMSFs, with an average balance of more than $992,000. Just as importantly, around two-thirds of SMSFs are in the accumulation phase, with more than 40% opened by people under 45 - making this very much a growth market for years to come, with a critical component being the focus on Generation X and Y clients.
The key is to find a way to tap into that growth potential without losing your focus on the client relationships and strategic expertise that have made your practice successful.
In this whitepaper, we consider the costs and benefits of a range of possible approaches, before recommending a simple four step process designed to add real value to your business. Those steps are:
1. Align your practice with a specialist SMSF service provider (with a full AFSL), who will provide ongoing advice; training, documentation and technical support, but allows you to control the type of advice you want to give. 2. Develop a business plan in collaboration with your advice partner, designed to leverage their infrastructure and expertise to support your long-term business goals. 3. Consider engaging a specialist, Australian-based SMSF Administrator, allowing you to focus on high-value strategic advice rather than compliance work, while maintaining or even growing your market share. 4. Add a wealth service to your business by partnering with an established and independent financial services organisation that understands your profession and knows how to work with you and your clients. This is critical given that the licensee you choose for SMSFs will be the same provider who works with your other clients, delivering wealth & advice services.
Together, these four steps have the potential to add lasting value to your business and your clients and help you overcome the significant challenges facing the accounting profession today.
The end of the accountants’ licensing exemption in 2016 is a catalyst for change. It’s also an opportunity for the Australian accounting profession to cement its position as the key, trusted adviser in the superannuation and advice space. By acting now, you can harness that opportunity to create sustainable value for your business and your clients over the long term.
