THE LAST INFALLIBLE REMEDY FOREPILEPSY.
LUnion Mi'dicale writes as follows in reference to apaper by Dr. Ogle, which lately appeared in theLancet:-
" Our correspondent has heard at London that aspecial hospital for epileptics exists in Fiance, and thata specific treatment with the galiuim album is therefound successful in the cure of epilepsy. Astonishedat these, to him, novel facts, he hastily forwarded us atranslation of the curious episode published by Dr. Ogle.Unfoi-tunately, to us, there is nothing new in all this. This pretended hereditary and family secret is no secretto any one here; neither is its want of success. Itsuse has, indeed, been loudly boasted about by thepresent possessor of the secret, M. Larnage, a zealousand skilful philanthropist. There exists at Leppe, inArdeche, an establishment, founded in 1857, under thetitle of Asylum of St. Vincent dle Paul for Epileptics, and placed under the Religieuses of that order. M1.Pialla was the first doctor of it; and he has been suc-ceeded by Dr. Perriat. Instituted (soi-disant) as acharity, to aid patients excluded from hospitals, theasylum admits all kinds of nervous diseases (exceptinglunacy) ; and in virtue of the maxim, that the richshould pay for the poor, the price of the pension variesfrom 60tt)(francs and upwards per annumn to 510 francsfor the second class. From eighty to one hundred pa-tients are admitted; lotteries and sulbscriptions beingopened from time to time to enlarge the asylum. Who-ever enters must promise to remain a year, at least. The juice of the galium albumi, obtained by pressure, isgiven in doses of 125 to 150 grammes at a time, at thefirst full moon of -May and September, and in the interval, the tuse of lozenges of the juice constitutes the onlyactive treatment of the epileptics. This, at all events,is the wav in which the 800 or 000 out-patients whoyearly go to Tain are treated, at the pharmacy wherethe religious sisters of the establishment deliver otit theprecious drugs, and sell them very dear. There are, however, other requisite precautions. Adults must haveneither eaten nor drunk for twenty hours previously, andchildren for twelve hours. The same rules apply to theuse of the lozenges; a box of twenty-four selling forthree fi-ancs.
" The credulous reader must not, however, imaginethat he can himself gather the plant, and squeeze outits juice, and successfully employ it. No. As thegrapes of Hermitage yield a superior wine, so does thegallium obtained from a reserved spot in the mountainalone enjoy the virtues curative of epilepsy ! As to themodus Jhciendi, and the composition of the lozenges,'that is my secret,' says M. Larnage.. Every one willadmire this tour de main. But the one secret which ismost obstinately kept is that of the cures effected. There is not an authentic one. To be sure, there area few cases of ecclesiastics cured or improved; but theyare nameless and without address, and no details orclinical observation verify the fact. ' I have seen,' saysM. Pialla, the acting doctor, 'm ore than 4000 epilepticstreated with the galium; and I do not hesitate in af-firming that 30tt0, at least, have been cured or relieved.'Statistics simple and easy, after the fashion of theestablishrment. Hence, there, as regards the true use ofthe galium in epilepsy, nothing precise is to be learntthere. In the interests of truth and science, however,we can supply a few decisive facts. Some time ago, M.Larnage was ambitious to obtain for his remedy aca-demic honours, and the benefits of A decree. He, there-fore, addressed himself to Al. Delasiauve, physician ofBietre, and author of an excellent work on Epilepsy.Eight epileptics wvere chosen in conditions of curability,
and subjected to M. Larnage's lozenges; but they wereneither cured nor relieved. A memoir sent to the Aca-demy of Medicine on this subject (and which, unfortu-nately, has not been reported upon) proves this state-ment. The therapeutic action of the pretended specificis, therefore, definitively judged and condemned ' asn1il.'"

W. FAIRBAIRN, Esq., F.R.S., President, in the Chair.DR. R. D. THOMSON read a paper On the Proper Sourceof Waters for Domestic Purposes. He said that theusual sources of water for domestic purposes were well-waters, agricultural river-waters, and pastoral waters.A general idea had prevailed, that, for the purposes ofdrinking, well-water was to be preferred to that derivedfrom other sources of supply; and, although sanitaryofficers had made attempts to inform the poor that itwas unwholesome, their efforts were greatly obstructed. He had examined shallow well and other waters for thesupply of towns, and he found that they not only con-tained sewage, but they varied generally in their com-,position from day to day. He condemned in the mostunequivocal manner the use of lead-cisterns, and lead-pipes, and said that they ought never to be used for theconveyance of water for domestic purposes. He recom-mended the use of pastoral waters, which were entirelyfree from pollution of sewage and agricultural impuri-ties. It was becoming essential for the increasingpopulation on the banks of rivers, that the supplies ofcities should be derived from the waters referred to, as

public bealth may suffer from their use. It is on thisaccount that I believe we ought, under no circumstances,to tolerate the use of these pumps, so long as water fromother and less impure sources can be obtained. In cases where there is a necessity for using this
water, it ought first to be boiled, and tben to be filtered;and this is chiefly the case in the summer season. Ihave observed that children more especially suffer fromdrink-ing putnp water in the summer; and have seencases where chronic diarrhea has been arrested byhaving recourse to filtered Thames water, instead of thesurface well water from pumps.
I have stolen a few moments from my canvass for thecoronership to write these remarks, as I am convincedof the importance of the subject, and the necessity ofthe condemnation of all waters derived from surfacewells in towns, situated, as many parts of London are, with a thin surface of gravel over a bed of clay.
I am, etc., EDWIN LABKESTER8, Savile Row, June 14th, 1852.
[Dr. Dundas Thompson, in a paper read byhim attheSocial Science meeting last week, made out a distinctcase condemnatory of the use of London pump waters. When questiorned on the point, he distinctly assertedthat these pump waters were daily becoming more un.fitted for human drinking. That Mr. Beale has for along time drank with impunity a daily pint of pumpwater containing a large amount of decomposed animal, etc., matters, is no proof that the water is fitted forgeneral use. PHYSIC[ANS' FEES.Sm,-In a letter in your last number signed " Bris-
toliensis," a complaint is made that the physicians ofthe present day lower their rank, and lower the profes-sion generally, by reducing their charges to little abovethat of the general practitioner. In fact, that they takethe guinea when they can get it; and when they cannot, they take what they can get. This complaint is but tootrue; but is the remedy uot in the general practitioner'sown hands? I believe it is. If it is necessary for thesocial status of the profession to have the rank of phy.sician amongst us, why don't we give him the opportu.nity of stupporting his rank? From a pretty wide ex.pelience, I can say that the way to keep the young phy.sician from poaching on the territory of the generalpractitioner, is for the general practitioner now and thento give him a day's shooting. In otber words, to callhim in to see a case now and then. That is the mosteffectual remedy to the poaching system, and, at thesame time, engenders a friendly feeling, which is by nomeans without its fruits. If "Bristoliensis" and hisneighbours will adopt my plan, they will soon have nopoaching in their district, and they as well as the poacherwill find the benefit of it I am, etc.,

LXNATICS IN NEw YORK. There are, writes the Ame.rican Medical Times, in this State upwards of twothousand insane persons confined in almshouses, jails, penitentiaries, who should come under the personal exa-mination of such commission; many of these unfor-tunate persons are the victims of the grossest ill-treat-ment. It seems impossible that, in an age so distin-guished for its intelligent treatment of the insane, andin a state so renowned for its judicious philanthropy, the poor lunatic is to be found still bound by chains ina dismal cell, unwashed, uncleansed, and receiving hismeagre pittance like the wild beast of the menagerie,Yet such a shocking spectacle may be seen in many ualmshouse of this state.

AE THE IIAIUMER ANn) CHISEL USED aY MR. Syxa?-In someclinical remarks made in the Lanect of the 14th inst., by Mlr. Fer-gusson, on a Ca'se of Tumour of the Upper Jaw, Mr. Ferguason is
reported to have ssid as follows:-
Here, as he had ofteii do,,e oni other occasions, tho operationwas performed piecemeal,-that is, portions of the diseased partswere broughlt awray at a time. This was a less rude process tininusing the haetter andchiseltas described by Lixars and SYME. HisMNIr. Fergusson's) operat.ion could be performed witbout either
removing or injuring the healthy tissues. He was cointent at thefirst to take away the lIrger portion of the tumour, partly withthe cuttinig pliers and partly with the forceps, especially the lion
forceps. He could thus remove the chief of the disease-gettingto its rctre, and then eosily to the eireimferenee. There was noother iniatniment in surgery which would enable the operator toJo this but the semicircular cuttiug forceps."In this passage, Mr. Fergusson mainitains a larinieiple of operat-
ing directly opposed to that which was lately recommended by3Mr. Syme in this JOURNAL. It is not our provitiee to decide such
practical questions; but we may remark that MIr. Fergussonshould tiot connect Mr. Syme's name with bammers and chisels-
which, so far as we know, he inever used nor recommended.
A VERY PROPER SUOoESTSON.-SlI: The coming meeting of ourAssociation in Lonidoti, when we may lhope for a more than aver-
age attendance of the members, is opportune for the considerationof any change that mnay be thought desirable. I therefore takethe present opportunity of suggesting, that on this and on futureoccasions arrangements should be made for holding a specialservico at the commen)cement of our annual meetings. The cus8tom of an introductory service is always observed by the membersof the British Association, and by those of the National Associa-
tion for the Promotion of Social Scieiice. It has possibly been
tbrough forgetfulness that the British Medical Association lashitherto omitted to pay this reasonuble tr-ibute of acknowvledgmentto the Giver of all wisiom. Let uts no longer give this occasionlor the reproach U1bi tres niedici ibi duo ethei.
I am, etc., X. P.My name is at the service of the Council, if it is asked; bitt it
will be more in accordance with my owns feelings, sitid with whatis due to the members generally, if this suggestioni appear in theJOURNAT. simply With All iDitial.
HOW TO GAIN A CONSULTIGo PRACTTCc.-Stn: I received thisirorning the enclosed note from an old aind valued medical friend, who expresses himself very strongly upon the subjecLDr.Wallace is a gentleman lho has lately settled in Colebester.
When he called upon me, I waas certainily surprised at blis leavingwith me a copy of testimonials. I never before heard of such a
practice being adopted by physicianis in search of a practice.Whatever may be the opinion of the profession as to the proprietyof Lhis, I feel coilfident that it will nlot be deemed within the rulesof etiquette to send such testimouials, with a note like that below',to medical men far and wide in tsie counties of Essex and Suffolk. If I am wrong, publicity will be the mncans of setting toe right;ntin perhaps some statndrd may be laid dowu as to how far thismode of adlvertisement may be safely carried. Whatever may bethe opinion of any particular member of the profession, I must, intbe strongest possible languiage, express my own dissent fromsuch practice; I think iL degrading to the order to whichi we
both belong; and I can: At illustrate this better than by askitngWhat would be thoughtL, said, and donie, were a barrister to eta.close a list of his testimonials to every lawyer in the countryt?

DEAR Sta,-Having recenitly left London and settled in Col.chester, as a consulting physician, I beg to serid for your perusala copy of testimoniials, which have been at various times accordedto itae; and I shall have much pleasure in embracing thoearliestopportunity of making your personal acquaintance. Believe me, yours truly,AL5XANDKR WALLACE, M.D., F.R.C.P.,
Late Physician to the St. Pancras and Northern Dispenary.r It is a sad thing to have to note the high moral tons put forth
in Introdtuctory Lectures as innate, proper, and belonging to our"noble and high-minided " profession; to heor how careful lec.ttsrers are to impress upon the student's ingenuous mind the cleardistinction which exists betweent his honourable profession andtrade. We say it is painful to note this, and at the same time towitness the frequent recurrence to the commonest trade ma.nuuvres exhibited by members of our professioti. What mustthe aforesaid ingenuous student think when he comes to comparehis lecturer's tbeory with his owni experience in prmctice? Thetradesmani issues printed oirculars as proofs of his skill, or thegoodness of his wares. WVhen a member of our profession doesthe same, we cannot for the life of us see that he can be regardedas other than a tradesman; that he does anythitig more or lessthan reduce his profession to a trade. Why does nnt Dr. WVallacequietlv bide his timne, and prove himself worthy by his industryand labours of the contidence which he would seize from thehands of his professional brethren by the violent ccup-de-maia ofissuing testimonials to them? EDDIToR.]
DR. TAYLOR's EVIDENCE.-SIR: With all due respect for youreditorial functions, I venture to call in question the correctnessof the opinion you have offered, in the JOURNAL of June 14, uponthe character of a highly distinguiished gentleman. It is due toscience, and to the members of the Association, that, havingchosen your own point of attack, you should afford sufficientdetails to put your readers in possession of the whole chargewhich you have brought against Dr. Alfred Taylor. You make a general statement, that "There is undoubtedly, and
hLas long been, a feeling in the minds of those who are acquaintedwith Dr. Taylor's way of giving evidence in cases of crinminal pro.secutions, that Dr. Taylor acts too much the part of an advo.cate." rhis general statement you appear to support by theparticular inistance (the censurable poinits of which you do notgive) of " a late fearful case of a murder of inifdnts in wlhich hewas engaged." (As principal, or as witness?)Having read the reported evidence of scientific.witnesses on
most of the importanit medico-legal trials, for several years past,I cannot participate in your opinion, that Dr. Taylor bas earned"a bad niame for scientific evidence"; "h as exercised his imagina.tion, and propounded hypotlheses, to explaini things scientificallyinexplieable." I believe that most of your readers will agree withme, the exactly opl site characteristics would be applicable toDr. Taylor's ovidence in general; anid that the present higltstanding of medico-legal science in this country is duie to theimpartial and truly scientific character of Dr. Taylor's evidence inpairticular cases. The attack you bave made upon Dr. Taylor, is not, in say
opitlionl, a matter simply affccting personal relptitation, but itinvolves the interests of justice and of science; and for thatreason alone, witbout referring to Dr. Taylor, as I fear he mightint notice it, I have presumed to address you thereon.
